The situation this country was in prior to the dictator coming to power

•Committed Marxist, first of his time in Chile•American President Richard Nixon opposed to Allende’s socialist reform and went to drastic measures to keep him out of government.• The Christian Democrats constituted was the largest single party which allowed them to turn down bills•Salvador Allende nationalized most natural resources, which cause the economy to plummet •The harsh truth is that without Salvador Allende there would have been no Pinochet” – excerpt from “Who killed Latin Democracy”

Why was a dictatorship an option?

•People saw communism as a threat to the state, this lead the people to vote in Pinochet as a democrat. Through military power he seized the dictatorship because he was the leader.

Following the resignation of Allende, Pinochet became commander-and-chief of the armed forces.

After the 1973 coup Pinochet was name President of Chile

Pinochet declared himself Dictator and began to denationalize , march 1974

Salvador Allende committed suicide during a military coup aimed to overthrow his power

Describe the state under Pinochet

•With help from a group of American economist known as “The Chicago Boys” Pinochet aimed to lowers taxes. •Began to sell off nationalized businesses and encouraged foreign investments •Unfortunately a high rise in unemployment and lowered wages hit Chilean government hard.

•Media censorship was high and was forced to promote the state.

Was life improved for the people

•Pinochet did not allow for elections, political parties, congress, unions, and civil liberties.

•The poor were excluded from any sorts of decision-making to do with political and economic matters.

•3,200 opponents of his state were killed, along with 30,00 arrested and may tortured

What was done for the nation overall?

•Economically – Chile was changed from an isolated economy in relation to the rest of the world, into a classical liberalized economy were fluctuations were controlled by the market itself.

•Military spending was increased nearly 120%. Military power was established along with internal defense.

How did this system shape international relations in the world?

•Pinochet’s goal of ‘Fighting Communism’ allowed him to become allies with other dictatorship countries; Bolivia, Brazil, Argentina, Uruguay, and Paraguay.•The united states criticized Chile in public, but provided material support. •The priminister, Margret Thatcher, had a controversial relationship was criticized by her successor Tony Blair

Why is this person no longer in power?

•In 1988, Pinochet was denied another term in a nationwide referendum. He was in office for one more year until the next election. Pinochet lost to the opposition.

What lead the destruction of their dictatorship?

•Pinochet stepped down in 1990, but kept his position commander-in-chief in military operations.

After Pinochet’s reign, Chile was faced with the daunting task of reinventing itself politically in order to create stability. Chile transformed itself from military rule to a democratic society.

How has the nation fared since then?

•The importance of Military has greatly reduced

• Within political office and army

•The initiation of favored by Pinochet free trade, open markets, and foreign investment in in exports are still being carried out after Pinochet’s run ended.

•Public opinion in politics has made its advancement in the last 20 years
