Government

Augusta County, Staunton, and Waynesboro are governed by a council-manager form ofgovernment that originated in the county seat of Staunton in 1908. Staunton has seven councilmembers, Waynesboro ve members, and Augusta County has a seven-member Board ofSupervisors. The metro area maintains comprehensive plans, and zoning and subdivisionordinances. Craigsville is the only incorporated town in the region.

Taxes

Localities in Virginia collect a 1% sales tax. They do not tax other items taxed at the State level.

Counties and cities in Virginia are separate taxing entities. Therefore, a company pays taxes toeither a county or to a city.

If a company is located in a town, it pays town and county taxes except for utility taxes which arepaid only to the town and the license tax which is paid only to the town unless town law permitsthe additional collection of a county tax.

Medical care is provided to area residents at Augusta Health, an independent 255-bed state-of-theart hospital located in Fishersville. Augusta Health is a multi-year recipient of Healthgrades’America's 50 Best Hospitals Award™, placing it among the top 1% of more than 4,500 hospitalsnationwide. The facility’s cancer center is a research aliate of the Duke Cancer Institute, and itsheart and vascular center has been named to Becker’s Hospital Review for “100 Hospitals withGreat Heart Programs.” Area residents can also utilize the University of Virginia Medical Center inCharlottesville, a world-renowned teaching and research center offering the latest in technology,services, and facilities.

The metro area has a 16,000+ student enrollment in seven high schools, ve middle schools,nineteen elementary schools, Valley Career and Technical Center, the Shenandoah ValleyGovernor’s School, plus one regional special education school, and one regional head startprogram. Metro area schools consistently rank well across a variety of reports, with AugustaCounty high schools among the top in the Virginia section of the U.S. News and World Report BestHigh Schools report, and Riverheads High School recognized as a National Blue Ribbon School.Local elementary and middle schools score high marks across all categories of readiness andprociencies. Waynesboro has the P. Buckley Moss Gallery, Waynesboro Heritage Museum, and the newlyrenovated historic Wayne Theatre. Waynesboro’s three historic districts are rich in Civil War lore,and its downtown waterway, the South River, takes center stage during two popular springfestivals, the South River Fly Fishing Expo and Riverfest. For 45+ years, the Shenandoah Valley ArtCenter, an aliate of the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts, has joined with the Waynesborocommunity to celebrate the glorious Shenandoah Valley autumn at the Fall Foliage Art Show.Throughout the year, residents and visitors can partake in any number of planned or spontaneousactivities along the South River Greenway, in one of six city parks, or on the 4-mile Water Trail.

Staunton is home to the Woodrow Wilson Presidential Library and Birthplace, thecritically-acclaimed American Shakespeare Center, the Staunton-Augusta Art Center, and theFrontier Culture Museum. A host of performances, festivals, art shows, and music events happenall year, and during the summer the city lls with classical music during the Staunton MusicFestival, and as part of the Heifetz International Music Institute’s summer season. Many of theseevents are free. History and architecture buffs can enjoy more than 100 historically-signicantsites, 1,000 certied buildings, and ve federal historic districts located in Staunton, all recognizedby the National Park Service’s National Register of Historic Places, and promoted throughprograms of the Historic Staunton Foundation.

In addition to a multitude of close-in city or county parks with a diverse mix of facilities andprogramming, residents and visitors can choose from Shenandoah National Park, Blue RidgeParkway, Sherando Lake, Natural Chimneys Regional Park, George Washington National Forest,Thomas Jefferson National Forest, Skyline Drive, and Grand Caverns Regional Park to take inscenic views, hiking, bicycling, wildlife watching, picnicking, camping, hunting, swimming, shing,and paddle sports.
