    The past school year at Augusta Prepwas one of much excitement and

    great achievement as we witnessedtechnology improvements oncampus, student academic andartistic accomplishments, continuedcommunity outreach, and athleticsuccess, to include our rst nightfootball and soccer games under

    the lights with the addition oflighting to our athletic eld. Wenow are also excited with the newest

    addition to our campus - that ofCavalier Stadium.I hope youll enjoy this 2013 editionof our Annual Report, whichspotlights these and many more highpoints for the 2012-2013 school year.This publication also recognizes ourall-important partners as we moveinto our 53rd year of successfully

    Board of Trustees 2013-2014 Greetings to all in the Prep Community!It has been an honor to have served this past year asthe President of Augusta Preps Board of Trustees.

    As a Prep Pillar, I also have been pleased to seeadvancements made and needs met thanks to your giftsto theAnnual Fund.This past year has been lled with excitement as we haveagain witnessed our students excel toward greatness,living out Preps mission statement that embodies amessage of diversity and character in a college-preparatory, non-sectarian setting.At Augusta Prep, students are indeed taught how tothink, not what to think. Such critical thinking skills

    are an essential ingredient to success in the businessworld, and I am impressed daily with how well thefaculty of Augusta Prep prepare their students forexcellence in so many ways.In addition to the superb faculty and students at AugustaPrep, we are continually appreciative to the individualdonor and volunteer support that is so fundamentalto Preps success. Your support truly fosters a familyatmosphere that the Prep community is known for.This past fall, that cohesive nature was on full display aswe collectively celebrated as one our rst night footballand soccer games with the new lighting in place at our

    22iMac ComputersAugusta Preps Lower School opened anew iMac lab for students in the 2012-2013school year, featuring22 iMac computers.Students loved the new addition intechnology.

    Augusta Preps athletic programonce again had a very successfulseason, with 11 teams playing post-season at a state tournament. TheBoys Swimming Team was the staterunner-up in the state tournamentheld at Georgia Techs aquatics center.The football team took the regionchampionship. The golf teamachieved a region championship andstate runner-up status. The Girls

    Tennis squad reached the state nalfour. Boys Soccer reached the nalfour, and Girls Soccer won regionand made it to the state Final Fouras did the volleyball team.

    Augusta Prep held an Evening with the Arts eventon April 26 that featured the artistic talents of Prep

    students, raising nearly$4,500 for the schools Fine ArtsDepartment. In addition to student artwork on display,the event also featured a Prep Idol contest.

    1,763Augusta Preps Middle School was heavilyinvolved this year in the Great American CanRoundup. Despite a theft of many poundsof cans from an off-campus site that set thedrive back, school and community membersrallied to renew the student collection back

    to a total of 1,763 pounds of aluminum,giving Augusta Prep a rst place nish in theRoundups state contest.

    In academics and technology, Augusta

    Prep and its students once again excelled inthe 2012-2013 school year.The academic year culimnated withseveral student honors events in alldivisions and closed with Augusta PrepsCommencement, which involved all 48of Preps seniors receiving diplomasand matriculating to four-year colleges oruniversities.All total, this years seniors had more than

    $2.5 million of academic, talent, andathletic scholarships offered. Thegraduating class also earned a mathmean score of 615 on the SAT and amean score of 611 on the critical readingsection of the SAT.In other scholarly achievements, AugustaPreps students placed second in teamand individual competition at the 25thAnnual Georgia Southern Invitational

    Mathematics Tournament, held in March.The schools varsity team - comprisedofDrew Chamberlain, Sarah Scott,Jacob Burr, and John Swierczynski received a second place showing in theDivision III competition. Meanwhile,Chamberlain also took second in theindividual contest for the same division.Also, Augusta Prep Upper Schoolstudent Nick Friedmanwas named a

    nalist for the 2013 Georgia GovernorsHonors Program. Friedman was namedso in the area of Mathematics. Accordingto the programs website, the GHP is asummer residential instructional program(four weeks in 2013) designed to provideintellectually gifted and artisticallytalented high school students challengingand enriching educational opportunities

    Middle School students againheld their 6th Annual InventionConvention, and the 5th gradeoffered its annual ScienceCarnival. Meanwhile, the LowerSchools 100 and 200 Book Clubscontinued with much success.Through the years, more than1,300 students have joined the100 and 200 Book Clubs atAugusta Prep. A student reads1,000 pages multiplied by his orher grade level to join the 100Book Club. If a student reachesthe goal for a second time, thatstudent then joins the 200 BookClub.In the way of technology, there

Thatequipment is getting its rst in-class use for the 2013-14 schoolyear as certain specialty classes areoffered along with other MaloneScholars schools throughout thenation, all connecting throughthe distance learning videoconferencing equipment. In 2008,Augusta Prep was selected as aMalone Scholars school, making ittodayone of only 50 schools inthe country and the only school inGeorgia with sucha designation.At the start of this

    past school year,the Lower Schoolalso received anew iMac labfor students,featuring22 iMaccomputers.Students love thenew addition intechnology. The

    Hull Fine Arts Center likewisesaw the addition of a newprojector for presentations on thebig screen, and this past summer,workers were on campus installingwireless access that will aidstudents and teachers in the useof all forms of mobile devices.And at the start of 2013, the Prepcommunity became familiar witha new look to Preps

    website - one that came with anew design and functionality aswell as a portal log-in that isexpected to be further developedin the coming year.

    The artistic talents ofAugusta Preps students tookcenter stage in more ways thanone in 2012-2013 - in onecase drawing a large crowd ofspectators as the school held itsrst Evening with the Arts

    event.

    The evening, which drew alarge crowd, was a celebrationof performing and ne artsat the schools Hull Fine ArtsCenter and parts of the UpperSchool. It was a new structureto a past community eventcalled Arts Fest.This time, Lower Schoolstudent artwork was framedand on sale in the HutchinsonGallery while Middle andUpper School artwork andsculptures decorated hallwaysand rooms. Student-craftedbirdhouses also could be founddangling from tree branches inthe Teardrop area.Following a time for artwork

    purchases, the crowd thenattended the nights Augusta

    Prep Idol contest, whichfeatured special guest judgesand several student singers anddancers. All total, the eventhelped raise nearly $4,500for the schools Fine ArtsDepartment.Upper School students also

    took a trip in April to the HighMuseum of Art in Atlantato see the Frida and Diegoexhibit that they had beenlearning about.In the area of PerformingArts, Prep students fared wellat this past years Regional

    Literary and Music Contestthat was held on Prepscampus, with the schooltaking ve rst place awards.Those receiving awards were:Sarah Scott in ArgumentativeEssay;Trey Robertson andMorgan Rawson in DuoInterpretation; CharleyHagist in US Extemp;Adey Duncan, Lillian Peel,andTyree Cowell in GirlsTrio; and Ben Guthrie,Johnathan Kulovitz, Drew

    In the spotlight, our studentsshowcased their immense actingand singing talent with fourimpressive performances - thatof Honky Tonk Angelsand Guysand Dollsin the Upper School,and Tom Sawyerand Famein theMiddle School.In Honky Tonk Angels, theaudience caught a glimpseinto the lives of three very

    different women - played byAdey Duncan, Lillian Peel,

    and Kenzie Baker - all having athread in common, being fromTexas and dreaming of beinga country music singer. Theperformance included music byband membersJ.P. Jeffcoat,Taylor Swan,Josh Byrd, Harry

    Judd, and Rachael Friedman.Later in the school year, Guysand Dollshit the stage. Themusical took place before a muralbackdrop that was the brainchildof local professional artist and

    Prep parentTom Nakashima,who along with Prep Fine ArtsHeadTara Chokshi, headed

    up a workshop of students topaint the city landscape scene.The production also involvedthe assistance of a professionallighting designer out of Chicago,Jared Moore.The year wrapped up with theMiddle School offering the80s classic Fame, featuring suchstudents as Hamp Gibbs and

    Ciara Meadows.

    wide receiver Nate Pylantwas named to the All-AreaTeam byThe Augusta Chronicle.The golf team achieved botha region championship andstate runner-up status. TheGirls Tennis squad reachedthe state nal four. BoysSoccer reached the FinalFour, and Girls Soccer won

    region and also made it tothe state Final Four as didthe volleyball team. VarsityBoys and Girls Cross-Country also captured regionchampionships.

    It was an exciting past year

    in athletics at Augusta Prep,starting with the rst homenight football game underthe lights.

    A large crowd, to includesome invited from theneighboring Springlakessubdivision, packed inand around the then-limited bleacher seating toexperience a game illuminatedby the schools newly installedeld lights. Fans also enjoyedtracking the score on a newscoreboard made possiblewith the help of the AthleticBooster Club.Later in the school year the

    lights also illuminated the rstnight soccer match at Augusta

    Preps campus. And amongthe 40 sports teams spanningAugusta Preps Middle andUpper School, there wasmuch success on the eld,track, and courts.Eleven teams reachedpost-season play in a statetournament. The BoysSwimming Team was the

    state runner-up in the statetournament held at GeorgiaTechs aquatics center -just barely missing the topplacement and featuringtwo rst place nishesbyAustin Chung in the100 breaststroke and 200individual medley.In its third year in existence,

    The 2012-2013 school yearat Augusta Prep ended just asa major project began for thefuture of the Cavalier athleticprogram.Construction began on theCavalier Stadium projectwithin days of Augusta

    Preps Commencement, andjust a few short weeks latera groundbreaking was held,involving Augusta Prep andColumbia County governmentofcials as well as student/athleteJoseph Shaver.Despite several rainy days, thework progressed at a rapid pace,

    and the Cavaliers now have anew structure on campus for the

    2013-2014 school year to use forbetter viewing of athletic contestsand for creating newAugusta Prep traditions.The stadium was introduced to acrowd at the schools rst footballgame of the year onAugust 23. The stadium was

    the culmination of a fundraisingcampaign that included nearly 60donors who made gifts rangingfrom $25 to $300,000. Thedrive was part of an overallfundraising campaign thatincluded the Lighting theWay campaign to installstadium lights at the schoolsathletic eld. The $300,000

    anonymous gift helped

    jumpstart the stadium project.The new stadium has a capacityof 490 seats nearly doublethat of the two bleachersthat had previously served asseating. The next phase offundraising involves a BoosterClub drive to build a press box

    on the opposite side of theeld from the stadium. Thegoal is to raise $65,000.

    Augusta Prep Middle andUpper School students alsoagain participated in theschools second annual PrepService Day, which involvedMiddle School studentsoverseeing several cleanupefforts on Augusta Prepscampus and Upper Schoolstudents venturing out intotheir community to volunteerat such organizations as theColumbia County Cares FoodPantry, Columbia CountyCommunity Connection,Goodwill, the HumaneSociety, the Garden CityRescue Mission in downtown

    Augusta, the Jessye NormanSchool of the Arts, and theAugusta Canal and MagnoliaCemetery for litter cleanup.Throughout the school year,Upper School students alsoparticipated in a recyclingeffort each Friday, collectingthe recyclable waste ofthose on campus and sortingthrough it for purposes ofturning in the results for acredit. Recyling canisterswere placed throughoutAugusta Preps campus aspart of the effort.

    Outreach

    Among many ofAugusta Preps studentoutreach efforts this yearwas the Its Spooky to BeHungry food drive, whichPrep students participated inby walking through the nearbySpringlakes neighborhoodin October and collecting

    food and money donations.All total - to include thecollections of a few othergroups - 1,758 pounds ofnon-perishable food wascollected in Springlakes aswell as $1,992 in monetarydonations.

    An academy with a connection to a past GreenJacket winner helped an Augusta Prep teacherfurther master her skills in her eld of expertise this

    past summer.Augusta Prep Middle School math teacher PeggyKellywas accepted into this years MickelsonExxonMobil Teachers Academy for math andscience teachers. She was one of just nine teachersin Georgia selected and among just more than200 teachers nationwide chosen. The week-longprofessional development academy took place inlate July in Jersey City, N.J., with all expenses paid.The Academy designed for 3rd through 5th grade

    teachers - was launched in 2005 after Phil and AmyMickelson partnered with ExxonMobil to developthe opportunity in conjunction with the NationalScience Teachers Association and Math Solutions.According to the Academys website, TheMickelsons wanted to develop a program thatinspires teachers from across the country in mathand science and equips them with interactiveteaching tools to ignite their students passionfor these subjects. They also wanted to create aprogram that helps to develop the next generationof science savvy citizens who will grow up to makethe next breakthrough in medicine, in energy, or inany of the growing number of elds that require asolid foundation in math and science.Math Solutions Professional Development, foundedby Marilyn Burns, and the National ScienceTeachers Association, design the curriculum. Kellysaid she was very excited to be part of something

    that is so cutting edge and directly related to

    Preps efforts to embrace 21st Century educational

    practices.There were more than 1,500 teachers who appliedfor the Academy from throughout the country.According to the Mickelson Academy, Kelly waschosen based on her qualications, dedication toinspiring students and (her) overall commitment toenhancing the teaching profession.Since the Academy launched, more than 3,600teachers have attended, affecting the lives of morethan 230,000 students nationwide, according to the

    Academys website.

    Those Who PrepareUpper School Math teacherTim Shaferis accustomed to numbers and how they carrysignicance. And this past school year, one in

    particular stood out - that of the number nine.This past school year marked Shafers ninthtime being named by an Augusta Prep STARstudent as the schools STAR teacher.STAR student Drew Chamberlain choseShafer for the honor. Chamberlain, whograduated this past year and will be attendingHarvard, was one of four students in ShafersAdvanced AP Calculus class.Shafer started working at Augusta Prep in2001. He has 30 years of experience inteaching mathematics, 12 years with a mathteam, and 26 years coaching baseball (16 as ahead coach).At Augusta Prep, Shafer teaches HonorsAlgebra II and AP Calculus, as well as anAdvanced Calculus course for students whohave completed AP Calculus before theirsenior year. He also coordinates Squad M

    (Augusta Preps Math Team) contests andtrips. His other major role is serving as HeadBaseball Coach.Augusta Prep is a special place, Shafersaid. The students are capable and diligent,and the opportunities in mathematics andbaseball (two of the many possibilities) areexcellent.It is a privilege to teach and coach here.

    Duncan, Heidi Robinson,and Lalitha Kavuri all attendedOrton-Gillingham training thispast school year.Orton-Gillingham is consideredthe gold standard for teachingstudents with dyslexia to read.But it was discovered that the

    techniques also help all childrento best learn phonemic awareness,the crucial building block togreat reading. With this training,Augusta Prep now has the onlyO-G trained teachers in the

    CSRA. This summer, LaurenIvey, Susan Yarbrough, andSusan Reynolds also attended theiSummit in Atlanta - a two-dayconference that taught them howto best use new iPads in theirclassrooms. Also this summer,Lalitha Kavuri attended a six-daytraining in Chicago to become acertied dyslexia screener, makingher the CSRAs only such

    certied screener.

    has been preparing for a cool trip Arctic Circlecool, that is.

    Its really cool to be doing studio based researchwith experts on the rapidly changing arcticenvironment, said the Augusta resident of herplanned travel with a group of scientists and otherartists like herself to the Arctic Circle as part ofThe Arctic Circle Program. I think Im like theyoungest person on the boat.Williams, who recently graduated from the RhodeIsland School of Design and this year started theinterdisciplinary art and design studio Mill Works

    in Augustas Sutherland Mill, said she had heardabout the project and decided to inquire about it.She was later notied she had been accepted asone of just a handful of scientists and artiststo go on the month-and-half-long journey,which was set to take place in September andOctober.TheArctic Circle is an annual expeditionaryresidency program that brings togetherinternational artists of all disciplines as well asscientists, architects, and educators, according to itswebsite. While in the Arctic Circle, Williams saidher task will be to document her environmentalsurroundings through drawings and through somedocumentary lm footage. Williams harkens back toher days atAugusta Prep in stating where her loveof art rst ourished:I moved to Prep for the art program and

    foreign language, she said. Thats where it

    started. If I didnt have that (experience andopportunity) I wouldnt be doing this.

    A book authored byDr. TillmanNechtman, a 1993 graduateof Augusta Prep, was recentlyselected as the book of the monthby the British Scholars Society.Dr. Nechtmans book is titledNabobs Empire and Identity in

    Those PreparedAugusta Prep Alum Stacey Mason, 97, returned

    to her alma mater in February for an Alumni Lunchn Learn event for junior and senior Upper School

    students.Mason, who is currently a manager at The HarbourGroup - a boutique public affairs rm located inWashington DC - spoke about such topics as the MiddleEast, public affairs, and international government clients.At The Harbour Group, Mason administers clientprojects including strategic planning and programdevelopment for the rms international governmentalclients, and manages US public diplomacy and outreachprograms for the Embassy of the United Arab Emirates

    in Washington DC.Prior to joining The Harbour Group in June 2010,Mason worked in Abu Dhabi, the United Arab Emirates,for the Abu Dhabi Government. During her time inthe UAE, Ms. Mason served as a special assistant tothe Director-General of the Abu Dhabi Education

    Council (ADEC) and was a member of the policyplanning staff, thus playing a key role in the emiratessocial development initiatives.Mason told students at the Lunch n Learn event

    how she got involved in such a global career and howAugusta Prep helped prepare her before going on toreceive her BA in Political Science from the Universityof Georgia and a Masters degree from AmericanUniversitys School of International Service.Mason spoke about the small class sizes of AugustaPrep and how that was very helpful in her academicdevelopment. She also spoke about her experiencesin the United Arab Emirates. In addition to her role

    at The Harbour Group, Mason currently serves asan advisor to several philanthropic and communitydevelopment organizations in DC.

    Recently retiredUpper School HeadJanHicks received a fond

    farewell from students,parents, and the facultyand staff of Augusta Prepas the 2012-2013 schoolyear came to a close.Most notably, studentsheld a special assembly inher honor, showcasing a

    Hicks joined Augusta Prepin her role in 2005 afterretiring as Fort Gordonscommanding general.As Hicks wrapped up theyear, she helped preparefor her successor -Stephen Schools.

    Schools has more than22 years of education

    experience and comesto Augusta Prep as theformer Head of UpperSchool at The Boys LatinSchool of Maryland inBaltimore, where hehad served since 2009.Schools holds a diploma

    from Porter-Gaud School,a B.A. from University ofNorth Carolina Chapel

    During the 2012-2013school year, Augusta Prepwas pleased to announcethe completion of a $1million endowment

    fundraising campaign.The schools Framing theFiftieth Campaign was

    launched in February2011 to celebrate the

    schools 50th anniversary.Because of the successin raising $1 million, anadditional $500,000 giftwas made to AugustaPreps endowmentin support of itsacademic program and

    faculty professionaldevelopment, bringing

    the total raised tojust more than $1.5million. The matchinggift was generouslymade possible by pastAugusta Prep parentand current grandparentAnn Boardman, who

    wanted to inspire othersto support Augusta Prep.

    Boardman also gavea separate $500,000

    donation as part of theinitial campaign. Nearly100 donors made giftsranging from $15 to sixgures as part of thecampaign.

    Augusta Prep is now a wireless campus, and theschool has former Prep Board Chairman Jim Hulland his wife, Karen Hull, to thank for it.The Hull family recently donated a gift ofapproximately $68,000 in support of theinstallation of wireless access on the campus ofAugusta Prep as well as to help purchase mobiletablet devices for teachers.This generous gift from the Hull family broughtcampus-wide wireless access to Augusta Prepand allowed us to provide teachers with theirown devices, Head of School Becky Gilmore

    said. This will enable teachers to strengthen theuse of technology in their classrooms. We aregrateful for this support, which made this dreama reality for Augusta Prep.
