HarnassWhether you’re an expe-rienced rider or a nervous novice, spending time around horses is not only an enjoyable activity, but imminently good for you, with multiple physical and wellness benefits.

Unlike conventional exercise machines that only focus on one muscle group at a time, riding forces the rider to make use of his or her entire body to steer, control, adjust the horse and maintain balance.

In addition to being a great posture improver, horse-back riding gives you a solid cardiovascular workout while also toning muscles, with a 30 minute ride burning roughly the same amount of calories as a 15 minute jog.

Don’t be surprised if after a first ride you feel muscles you never knew you had! this is because as you react to the horse’s movements to avoid becoming off balance, the deep postural muscles of the trunk and pelvis and the adductor muscles of the thighs are continuously being conditioned.

Your quads, hamstrings and glutes will also all get a solid workout, as all these muscles are involved in the forward, backward and lateral leg movement used to cue and steer the horse. And you’ll defi-nitely benefit from a stronger core, even after a relatively short period in the saddle.

Children in particular benefit hugely from regular rides, with the main physical benefits including improved balance and muscle strength, im-proved coordination and faster reflexes, increased muscular control, decreased spasticity, increased range of motion of joints, increased endurance and improved visual-spatial perception.

But it’s not only on a physical level that horses are worthy their weight in gold. horse riding has been shown to have multiple positive impacts on overall wellness, and is known to improve self-confidence, self-esteem and self-image – crucial to the healthy develop-ment of young children and teens.

thebenefits of riding!

8

Page 9: August Whats on e edition

recent research has also shown that children who ride are more likely to be patient and to display emotional con-trol and self-discipline. they develop improved risk-taking abilities and have better qual-ity of life and life satisfaction perceptions, on average, than children who pursue more sedentary activities.

Of course, simply being out and about and enjoying the outdoors will greatly en-hance your general sense of wellbeing, with experienced riders saying there is little that compares with the sheer

exhilaration of cutting through an open field or trotting down a beach on horseback.

So if you’re looking for a fabulous new workout or a fun activity for the whole family that gets you outdoors and de-stresses and centres you, check out the pages of the What’s On to find some great riding opportunities near you.

You’re never too young – or too old! – to start a new hobby or to discover the unadulter-ated joy of an invigorating horseback outing. Go saddle up!

Nea has over fifteen years experience in holistic therapy, including working with hypnotherapy, angel guides, reflexology, reiki and Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP). She has been certified in South Africa for many of her competencies, but also holds international accreditation for a few of her accomplishments, including ‘Life Coaching’ and ‘NLP’ an hypnotherapy. Nea is an ‘Advance Life and transformation Coach’, specialising in human behaviour, and also do ‘past life regression with hypnotherapy’.

While she enjoys healing in every form, her most rewarding practice, is one-on-one training sessions, during which she accomplishes in a mere 6 weeks, what most people fail to attain in an entire lifetime – success in all spheres of life – and that ever-elusive sense of balance.

“NLP is the study of excellence in one’s self and seeks to advocate self-awareness and effective communication; and to change patterns of mental and emotional behaviour into states that are more positive and successful.By addressing the Mind-Body Connection, NLP treats the root of many dis-eases and imbalances by transforming the mind. this causes a healing ripple effect throughout the entire physical body, ultimately resulting in a successful outcome.”

Benefits of emBarking on a “Quest for transformation” with me:

• Less fear, more confidence.

• Learning how to apply one’s energy to gain what is desired.

• the ability to respond thoughtfully, instead of reacting counterproductively.

• the stability and re-assurance of an iron-clad resolve.

• Being at peace with yourself – through self-discovery and self-acceptance.

• A greater sense of balance, freedom, control, tranquillity and clarity.

• An improved sense of harmony domestically and in relationships.

• A concentrated focus and an increase in efficiency and productivity, regarding career.

• Motivation to reach further to attain goals – personally and professionally.

• More quality time for family, friends and yourself (guilt-free!)

• An inner awakening and reminder of what it means to be alive, renewing a zest for life!

AN exciting new concept in trail running is taking the city by storm, with hundreds of runners lacing up to take part in the unique new Out the Green Box Nite Series.

the first of three scheduled 5km races was run at Lavender Blue on Friday, 25 July, with two more scheduled for August.

What makes the series unique is that each race is run after sunset, with runners advised to wear head torches to help them navigate their way between the various luminous beacons plotting the route.

While some will undoubtedly tackle the route with gusto, the

emphasis of the Out the Green Box Nite Series is firmly on family fun, with walkers and runners of all fitness levels encouraged to also take part.

In addition to a torch of headlamp, the only mandatory equipment is a taste for adventure and sense of humour!

the second Out the Green Box race takes place on Nahoon Beach on August 15 and the third and final race in the series is set for the east London Golf Club on 29 August. See events diary p 15.

OPEN water swimming – either in the ocean on the coast or in dams inland – is a sport to be at-tempted by the brave at heart.

Swopping the chlorinated safety of a swimming lane for the open waters is a thrilling experience, with swimmers having to con-tend with much more than misty goggles and the occasional “traf-fic jams” in peak times at the gym.

Colder water, currents and tides are just the beginning. Throw in the reality that the water you share is teeming with sea life, from fish, dolphins and even sharks, and you have the recipe for an adventure every time you dip your toe in the water.

Here in East London, a small community of swimmers take on the waters. Favourite spots are Nahoon beach and Orient beach, with activity becoming more in-tense as training for Ironman and the Ironman 70.3 becomes more focussed.

This is according to Sean Mur-ray, open water enthusiast and the leader of Facebook group East London Open Water Swimmers.

Murray also offers tips on open water swimming on the Amathole Triathlon webpage. For example, the best way to prepare for and enjoy a sea swim, in particular, is to get fit in a pool. You should be able to swim at least 1 kilome-tre before venturing out into the open waters.

As for the swim itself, Murray

advises swimmers to breathe on both sides between strokes to in-crease the chances of swimming in a straight-ish line. Swimming squew makes the distance longer, and another way to keep swim-ming in the right direction is to look up at a fixed point in the distance every now and then.

The full list of tips can be found at www.amatholetriathlon.co.za.

Open water swimming is to pool swimming what mountain biking is to road cycling and trail run-ning is to track. Each discipline has its advantages and disadvan-tages, its fans and its foes.

While there are many mountain bike and trail races, there are very few local open water races. One such race is the annual Merri-field Mile, a popular family out-ing with various distances which takes place at Wriggleswade Dam in February or March each year.

And if there is a local hero of the sport, it must be Graeme Coutts who was this year the first person to ever tackle the distance between Kwelera and Nahoon Beach… by swimming the 17.5km distance of the Dis-covery Surfer’s Challenge, albeit a day after the actual event.

Take a leaf out of Coutts book and try open water swimming. East London certainly has the coastline for it, and it may just turn out to be your new passion.

For more information, Sean Murray is available on 072-059-2326.

“We all have Hopes and Dreams. By purchasing a bandana for R25 you could make a difference and offer those fight-ing leukaemia and other life threaten-ing blood disorders a chance of a future” states Tarryn Corlett, Chief Operating Of-ficer for The Sunflower Fund.12th October is National Bandana Day. The Sunflower Fund encourages the pub-lic to buy a bandana from their nearest Pick n Pay or local Round Table, includ-ing Namibia and wear it to their show their support towards the brave fight that these patients face on a daily basis when they lose their hair from their chemother-apy treatments. Funds raised through National Bandana Day go towards paying for the expensive

tissue typing (DNA) tests for new donors to join The South African Bone Marrow Registry (SABMR). The Sunflower Fund relies heavily on this fundraiser to continue testing donors to help patients suffering from leukaemia and other life threatening blood disor-ders, who require a bone marrow trans-plant in order to survive and live a longer and healthier life. “Please support this campaign and help make a difference as together, we can save more lives and we cannot do this without your support” implores Corlett. For more information on National Ban-dana Day and The Sunflower Fund, call the toll free line on 0800 12 10 82 or visit www.sunflowerfund.org.za
