OFFICERS

I.D.T.C. NEWSLETTER

ACTIVE MEMBERSHIP

Active members get lower rates for classes and other events than inac-tive members. More importantly, they are what makes the Club work. When you join IDTC, you are considered an active member for the first year. After that, active membership is maintained by putting in a mini-mum of 10 hours per year doing things for the Club, such as assisting or instructing a class, helping out at events (e. g. being a steward at trials, providing refreshments for a graduation, making arrangements to bring in a seminar speaker, etc.), or serving on a committee such as the Training Committee. Active members are also expected to regularly attend the monthly Club meetings. Your active/inactive status for a year is determined by your participation during the previous year.

Page 3

The brief meeting was held at Myer’s Park

in Lansing at 7:35, following a Dish to Pass

supper.

Minutes from the previous meeting were ap-

proved, and there was no Treasurer’s re-

port.

TRAINING COMMITTEE: Classes will start

the first week of September – the list of

classes will be available at the beginning of

August, with registration opening for ad-

vanced classes the second week of August.

There will be an agility class on Friday

night, but there will be no CGC class this

session – signups are better when it is giv-

en every other session. Kerry is still look-

ing for instructor/assistant for Beginner II

class.

OLD BUSINESS: Suzanne & Hannah will

visit insurance vendors in the next month

to find new and appropriate coverage for

policy with expires in October.

Further thoughts on benefits for active

members should be sent to Suzanne.

NEW BUSINESS: A question was raised

about other dogs coming into our area

during the CPE Agility Trial at Tremen Park,

even though we have rented the pavilion

and surrounding space. All dogs coming in

to the Park are subject to inspection for

Rabies certificates, so there is probably no

way to prohibit the general public from

coming by with dogs not involved in com-

petition at the trial.

The next meeting will again be a Dish to

Pass Picnic in Myer’s Park beginning at 6

pm, August 27th. The program will include

two bomb-sniffing dogs and their handlers

from Cornell’s Security Department. The

program will begin at 7 pm.

Meeting adjourned at 8:05 pm.

Submitted by Hannah Robinson, Secretary

NOTE: anyone coming to the meeting at

Myer’s Park should arrive just AFTER 6 pm,

as there is a park fee for entrance before

6 pm, unless you are a Lansing resident.

Deb Bain – My young English Springer, Dealer, completed his Rally Novice title at the recent Susque-Nango Kennel Club shows. His 3rd leg was a 99, good enough for 1st place in the rally novice B class.

Anne Williams – Belgian Tervuren, Falcon. earned his NWDA WPCh (Weight Pull Championship) at the pulls on July 12th and 13th.

Belgian Malinois, A Tatu finished both his Rally Novice and Beginner Novice titles on Saturday at the SNKC Trials with bumper legs in each on Sunday.

Marg Pough – Border Terrier DJ finished her Master Earthdog title at the Saturday AM Finger Lakes Kennel Club trial. For all runs at this Finger Lakes KC weekend she had excellent walk ups and excellent marks. Her hunt ups have always been good, but she has been soft in marking for some judges. I was really pleased with her marks.

At the Border Terrier Club of America Specialty show in Warwick, RI DJ earned her 2nd leg on her CD with a score of 190 and 3rd place. And the Bandersnatch Team, took 2nd in Team Obedience. Our team consisted of Devlin and me, Astrid Pollock and Kallee, Meg Thompson and Briar, and Sue Netzman and Dickens (who was the oldest dog competing in Obedience.) Dickens turned 14 just after the Specialty ended. Meg and Briar also got a leg on their CD. Dickens was also in the final for 6 dogs for Best Otter Head.

Brenda Finnicum — My rescue rottie, Sisko, recently finished his ASCA Novice Jumpers title and one leg towards his Standard title, all with first places, in his first ever agility trial. At his first attempt in CPE agility he Q'd 6 out of 8 runs, all with first places. He earned his CL1-R and his CL1-S.

Rose earned 2 legs at the SOTC obedience trials to finished her CD. One leg was a fourth place. Rescues rule!

Lynne Anguish—At the Locke UKC shows in July, Nika went Reserve Best of Breed in the Champion class in 2 of 3 shows, beating her mother and 2 other adult champions!!

Karen Netherton—Franklin Hill's Finnegan, alias Finn, earned 2 legs toward his Rally Novice title at SOTC in June, then finished it the first day of SNKC in Binghamton. He also earned his Beginner Novice Title during the 3 days at SNKC- he brought home 1- 2nd place, then 2 first places to finish. Finn earned his CGC title through the club so these are our first attempts at organized competitions. Thanks to all the IDTC instructors that have helped Finn and I get this far and hopefully keep going. Even more thanks to my training "family".

IDTC is holding a Temperament Test for dogs on September 8. If you will be bringing

a dog to test, please get your registrations in soon. Day-of-test entries are also ac-

cepted, but we would like to know how many dogs to expect.

For those who may be asking "What is this Temperament Test anyway?", it's a

means of evaluating your dog's personality in terms of how he/she reacts to a variety

of situations under controlled conditions (so you have an idea what bothers your dog

and what sort of real-life situations you might need to be concerned about). The situ-

ations range from meeting a stranger who greets you but ignores the dog to an unex-

pected loud noise to a threatening person. No training is required to prepare for the

test (except that the dogs needs to be used to a leash). This is a test of the adult tem-

perament, so dogs must be at least 18 months old. For more information see the

ATTS web site http://atts.org.

Application form is available from a link on the IDTC web site http://

ithacadogtrainingclub.org or from ATTS.

go through the training, as well as having your dog pass the evaluation.

If you are interested please get in touch with Robin Hamlisch [email protected]

The human training is held in two evening sessions, 2-hour each, over a two week

period (attendance required at both). The pet screening is held the weekend in be-

tween the two training sessions (15-minute slots are scheduled for each pet).

Pets do not come for the two human training sessions; their “debut” is at the weekend

pet screening.
