Living life like there is no tomorrow! In December 2004 Michael Varley’s life changed overnight. He had noticed a small brownish blemish almost like a freckle appear and on a friends advice had it checked out by a specialist. Presenting with no other symptoms he found it hard to believe that when the results from a biopsy returned, he was then diagnosed with a 1.5mm nodular melanoma (skin cancer). Further testing and the agonizing wait to find out whether it had entered the lymphatic or blood system was the worst three weeks of his life. During this time he put his affairs in order and spent as much time with his loved ones. Living life like there isno tomorrow!

With no further treatment available if the cancer entered these two systems, Michael prepared himself for the worst possi-ble outcome, a short few months to live.

Luckily for Michael the cancer had not

spread and he was given a second chance.

He started to think differently about what he wanted to do with his life and stopped taking things for granted. Spending more quality time with his family and enjoying as many social events and interactions with friends, became a top priority for him. Now he enjoys every minute and sees things from a totally different perspective. (Story continued on page 4)

Hello Readers

It’s not always easy to rear-range your life in order to achieve the required results of a new en-

deavour. A commitment to stay the course is part of any such decision as is understanding your motivation to make the necessary changes. This applies to fitness and exercise programs, sport, whether playing of volunteering or to a course of study.

At STARplex, training and study to stay at the cutting edge of fitness and recreation industry trends is a continu-ous process, so much so that we have appointed Maria Lavender as training officer. Maria’s role is to coordinate the compulsory and elective training requirements of 170 staff and keep up to date records of training attainments such as First Aid, mandatory notifica-tion, emergency evacuation procedures, customer service, autism spectrum disorder and cultural awareness.

I am very pleased fifteen STARplex staff members have this year committed to undertaking a Diploma of Business Management. The Diploma provides these staff with a better understanding of business processes and policies, communication methods, human re-source management and strategic planning.

Many of our readers will know some of those on the course: Kevin Brooks, Gareth Pennington, Mel Schmidtke and Judy Wittwer from the Courts, Paul Steltzer, Alli Thomson, Maryann Shubin, Wade Lack, Wendy Underwood and Nicki Dawson from the Fitness

Centre, Deb Heynen, Maria Lavender and Jana Pridham from the Swim Centre and Lorraine Warland and Mae Jelinek from the STARstore. When you see them at STARplex I would invite you to encourage them in their study. I know they would appreciate your support.

The benefits in having a cross section of staff do this course which is being delivered on site at STARplex by lec-turers from Proteus Enterprises are immediate and meaningful to the partici-pants. Project work from the course is applied to each staff member’s work resulting in improvements and some exciting outcomes for our operation. At the end of the two year course the staff involved will have formal qualifications to enhance their employment opportuni-ties and new knowledge to apply to their various roles at STARplex.

The continuous training and accredita-tion of all STARplex staff is vital to the quality of our operation and the safety of our clients.

Yours in Health and Fitness

STARS in my Eyes The Gentle Art of Doing Nothing Meditation with ‘Mindfulness’ training is becoming very popular and the benefits are so spectacular, that medical science is taking the practice very seriously. Last year physiotherapist, Georgie Davidson spoke at STARplex about mindfulness. She introduced us to it by simply for a

half an hour closing our eyes, concentrating on our breathing and whatever thoughts came into our heads simply letting them slip by and return to our breathing. I was so impressed I went on to enroll in her eight week course that was inspiration-al, health giving and life changing.

Mindfulness means paying attention with openness, curiosity and flexibility. Through various forms of mental training, any-one can master ‘the art of conscious living’, and find inner

peace regardless of their life circumstances. Mindfulness has been practiced for many thousands of years in the East, through traditions like meditation, yoga, martial arts and tai chi. But it's only in the last 30 years that it has taken root in Western science, attracting the interest of some of the world's leading medical researchers, psychologists, neuro-scientists and geneticists.

My friend Janice James-Valentine, Trinity College Psycholo-gist has told me that for her ‘The Gentle Art of Doing Nothing’ is so vital that she tries to find 10-15 minutes every day to ‘stop’ and practice some mindfulness. She recently lent me an audio tape that is a guided meditation for 15 minutes that is a wonderful few moments of peace even on the busiest and trying of days.

City to Bay Nutrition Planning Many people set a yearly goal of finish-ing/competing in the City to Bay and with the ‘Fun Run’ only a few months away (Sunday 18th September) it’s time to make sure we have a nutrition plan in place. With training programs well un-derway it is important that we make sure our food and fluid intake help support training adaptations. If you ignore key nutrition areas until the night before race day you won’t allow the body to take full advantage of all your hard work during training. If you consider how many kilometres you will run during the lead up training compared to 3, 6 or 12 km during the ‘fun run’ it’s not hard to see why our training diet needs to be placed as an equal importance to our ‘race day’ diet.

Your ability to recover between training sessions is importance and will deter-mine the amount/load you are able to fit in over the next two months. A general healthy diet consisting of plenty fruit, vegetables, high fibre breads and cere-als, low fat dairy and lean meats always forms the foundation of a training diet. Making sure you plan recovery meals/snacks after strenuous training sessions such as fruit, sandwiches, English muf-fins, yoghurt, pasta and rice based dish-es will help you replenish glycogen stores (muscles energy reserve) and aid muscle recovery. Fluid replacement is also a key to optimal recovery with a targeted intake of 1.5L of fluid per kilo-gram body weight lost (Pre Training Weight – Post Training Weight). In most cases water is the best form of fluid for hydration and sports drinks are best consumed as a recovery drink. It is im-portant to start re-hydrating and eat something as soon as you can after a strenuous training session.

If you are hoping for a time less than 60 minutes you are unlikely to need addi-tional fuel (glucose) supplementation throughout the race with your main

nutritional focus being hydration. Make sure you have had a high carbohydrate meal the night before (pasta, rice, noo-dles, etc.) and a normal breakfast on race day. It’s important you trial your pre event meals/snacks prior in a training situation to help familiarise yourself and give yourself time to make adjustments if there are any issues (gastrointestinal upset for example). Start your hydration days before the event making it only necessary to ‘top up’ on fluids on race day rather than over drink. If your urine is clear on the Sunday morning you are well hydrated and only need to sip on water throughout the morning.

Special Tip: Some recent research has suggested that consuming small amounts of carbo-hydrate and even swirling sports drink in your mouth prior or during high intensity exercise (<60 mins duration) can help excite the brain and nervous system to improve performance. A quick sip of sports drink towards the end of the race might just help power you home!

Running for Chelsea - Gold Coast Marathon 2011

(Story continued from page 1) “Completing the 42.2km Gold Coast Marathon in 4 hours 19 minutes and 41 seconds was a great experience and one I will definitely do again, but I need a little rest for now”, says Samantha. When starting to really hurt and feel heavy in the legs at the 32km mark was when Samantha really struggled. Her mind began to wander and she found that she had to do a lot of self talk to get through the next six kilometers, but when she reached the 38km mark she found that she had won the battle, it was time to step it up and she realized she only had only 4km’s more to do.

Her main goal throughout was not to stop and she was amazed at the amount of people cramping up, pulling out and needing medical attention, some as early as 24km and more at the 38-39 km mark with only a short dis-tance left. Seeing this made Samantha even more determined to keep going. “I wore my fundraising sign and it was great to hear people yelling out ‘Go Sami, do it for Chelsea. Kids along the way gave me high fives and the encour-agement from the crowds helped me get through. I pushed as hard as I could at the time, finished and I pulled up better than I expected to”, says Sa-mantha.

The Road to Saigon One of my dream roles to play has always been ‘John’ in the musical ‘Miss Saigon’. My dream was realised in May this year when I had the privilege to perform with Marie Clark Musical Theatre Company. We had a fantastic season with full houses and some great reviews. The show has been nominated by Adelaide’s Theatre Guild’s Curtain Call

Awards for two awards including best musical. But it was a long road to opening night!

STARplex was good enough to sponsor us by providing a Body Combat and a boot-camp session for the men. It was an opportunity for us guys to get to know each other and get a taste of a boot-camp experience. This was significant because we were playing a group of American soldiers on tour in Vietnam at the fall of Saigon. The challenge of doing boot-camp helped bind us together in a common experience, and under Clayton’s leadership we were pushed to our limits. I can honestly say that the experience at STARplex helped shape us as an ensemble and established our sense of team and mutual encouragement. It also set a norm of fitness for the group. Each night before the show started a small group of guys took over a corner of our dressing room and did a quick but intense weight session with plenty of push-ups and sit-ups to help us get pumped for the show.

Having a sense of perseverance amongst the cast set us up for times in the rehearsal process when things didn’t go to plan. It also broke down any barriers between ‘lead’ actors and ‘chorus’ members; we were all part of the ensemble and were committed to work together for the show.

So thanks STARplex, especially Ally and Paul from the gym for your support: your help set us up for a win.

What an amazing year it’s been for your representative Basketball club in the North, the Central Districts Lions.

Over the past 10 years that we've been based at STARplex our club has contin-ued to develop into a community organi-sation we can all be proud of.

In every possible measure, be it growth, player development or on court success the Lions continue to develop each year and there are three main reasons for this:

- Our amazing force of volunteers, particularly our coaching staff, which collectively form the most talented and experienced junior coaches in the Northern area of South Australia. - Our strong relationships with SA Country Basketball programs seeing us attract the best coaches and players across South Australia.

- Working more closely than ever be-fore with STARplex programs, Northern Region Sports Academy (NRSA), holi-day clinics and domestic\social compe-titions.

The Lions provide athletes within STARplex, domestic\social competi-tions with ready access to the district competition. Within the district compe-tition kids have the opportunity to be exposed to the highest level of compe-tition in the state week-in and week-out. (Story continued from page 1) Michael went back to work in February 2005 and reports that it was the best day of his life as he then knew everything was positive and some normality had returned to his life.

In June 2010 after holidaying in the United States for one month and looking at the photos of the trip, he suddenly real-ized how much weight he was carrying and when his son Jordan remarked “when are you due dad”, this prompted Michael into action and he joined STARplex Fitness Centre in the first week of August. “Paul Pearce recommended personal training with Wade Lack who has been very inspira-tional and a great motivator. I have now dropped to 80kg and have a metabolic age of a 34 year old”, says Michael. Michael enjoys doing group fitness classes and in particular

Les Mills RPM three to four times per week. He participates in a Group Personal Training once a week and also fab abs on occasion. He is running in the City to Bay this year with STARplex to raise money for STARlight, in honor of his friend Daniel Fenton. Although this will be his first experi-ence with running he is looking forward to the challenge.

“All the gym instructors at STARplex Fitness Centre are very helpful. I have developed a passion for fitness and have a family of friends in the gym,” says Michael. Enjoying the group experience Michael has recently joined Facebook and is delighted that he has a number of friends who have added him from the gym.

Michael’s message to everyone is to look after your health, have regular checks, don’t put it off and remember to “slip, slop, slap.” Dawn Mettyear

Crossfit is our kind of Sport! During the last weekend of May, Sam Cryer, Clayton Saviour, Wade Lack and Deanna Dimasi pursued their dreams of competing in the Crossfit Regional’s Competition at Charles Moses Stadium, Olympic Park in Sydney. Of the 900 athletes who started in Sectionals, 60 went through to Regional’s and 45 com-peted in Sydney.

Sam Cryer competed individually and

ranked 22nd in Australia, which is an excellent achievement. He was re-quired to complete six WODs (workouts of the day) and made it to the fourth round, where athletes were cut from 45 competitors down to 14. The fourth workout was gruelling and needed to be completed in a 25 minute time frame. Execution of each of the following exer-cises had to fit strict guidelines or the repetition was not counted. The workout consisted of 100 pull-ups, 100 kettle ball swings at 24kg, 100 double unders, 100 overhead squats carrying a weight of 40kg. Out of the 45 athletes who commenced this workout, only a small handful, were successful in com-pleting the workout within the specified time.

Clayton, Wade and Deanna competed as a team and also made it to the fourth workout and finished 25th in Australia. Their fourth workout consisted of com-pleting 250 chest to bar pull-ups, 250 kettle bell swings, 250 double unders

and 250 overhead squats as a team, following the same criteria as the indi-viduals with the weights scaled down for female entries.

When asked what Sam thought of the experience, he replied “Awesome, defi-nitely my kind of thing, my people and my community. The encouragement and support given by fellow athletes and spectators was fantastic. Everyone did really well”, said Sam.

The four athletes will now compete in some local competitions with the next big competition in September/October 2011. “At the moment I am only training in Crossfit, doing some kind of workout six days a week. I will also run the City to Bay in September to support the STARlight Foundation.”

Congratulations and well done Sam, Clayton, Wade and Deanna on your achievements, your dedication and commitment to the sport is inspirational.

STARplex Swimmers compete at the Australian Short Course Championships

The Australian Short Course Championships were held July 1st – July 3rd at the new state of the art facility, the South Australian Aquatic and Leisure Centre at Marion.

This event attracted many first class swimmers from around Australia such as Libby Trickett, Leisel Jones and Geoff Huegill to name a few. The event was a huge success selling out on every evening and was also the first televised event from the new centre.

Our very own STARplex Swim Club had three swimmers attend the three day event and we congratulate James McKechnie, Makayla Ailmore and Shay Middlemiss on achieving personal best times in one or more events. James had four races includ-ing the 200 breaststroke in which he moved up the Australian ranking to 15, Makayla competed in the 50m and 100m butterfly events and Shay competed in the 50m and 100m breaststroke events.

James was selected for an Australian Youth Camp Award to train firstly at the Australian Institute of Sport and then later in the year at Thredbo. It is a fantastic achievement from these three athletes to compete at National level in their chosen sport and we wish them well in the future.

Finding the Warrior with-in

Before I started going to STARplex Fitness Centre I had been going through a lot of is-sues, including bullying and har-assment in both my personal and working environment . The-se issues had been occurring over the last five years or so and were affecting my life in a very

negative way.

Three and a half years ago I made the decision to finally give up smoking, but as a consequence I put on quite a bit of weight. Originally being a size 8, my life hit rock bottom at the end of 2010 when my weight spiralled out of control. This was the worst I had ever felt, with bullying becoming a huge problem.

Then a dear friend told me I was going to go with her to do a Zumba class at STARplex and that was the start of my new life.

I started Zumba on Wednesday with effervescent Belinda – a (Story continued on page 6)

charming and delightful instructor with a smile you can’t wipe off. I immediately felt a part of the class where there was no expectation or intimidation and I felt like I had been a part of this forever. Then I decided to try Belly dancing, this has helped ease my rhythmic appetite. I had danced for 20 years prior, but was pushed out by constant bullying and felt that I didn’t belong.

Before long I was attending quite a number of fitness clas-ses at STARplex including Box Fit, Body Vive, Body Pump, Body Combat and Body Balance. I can’t thank the instruc-tors enough for all their encouragement and for igniting my passion for fitness. I can’t believe the change. Where would I be without these heroes. I could have sat on my butt taking anti-depressants and wallowing in self pity, but that is not me. I am now learning to face my bullies in a positive way and am moving forward. I am also helping others to do the same.

I now have a totally different outlook on life and am doing things that I wouldn’t have thought of doing years ago. I recently completed my Zumba Instructor training and am looking forward to completing training in Zumba Atomic and Zumba Gold shortly. I have also started running and will run 12 km in the City to Bay Fun Run in September, something I always have wanted to do, but just felt that I couldn’t.

I am amazed how many friends I have and am proud and appreciative of my husband’s support. My life has changed for the better now that I have a more positive outlook.

Winning the STARplex Fitness Centre’s Ultimate Challenge is just icing on the cake. This challenge was to do as many classes or variations of classes over a three week period.

Who has abs of steel? When Shane Costello set a hover challenge for a bit of fun on Sunday morning, he didn’t think that he would have to eat his words. The challenge set over the past four weeks lead to a bit of healthy competition amongst some members, STARplex Fitness Centre member Karen Coulle, however remained undefeated with a personal best time of 10 minutes.

Congratulations to Karen and all the participants who commit-ted to this challenge.

“The hover challenge is all about competing against your own time and seeing if you can achieve a personal best time for each challenge”, says Shane.
