August / September 2015 Price 40p Copy Deadline for the October/November issue - Monday 14 September 2015 One of our favourite hymns which is not only sung in churches up and down the country but also in secular settings, appearing in the charts from time to time. Yet what is this “Grace” that we sing about? I believe Grace to be one of the most difficult concepts for us to grasp in an age that values individualism, self-sufficiency and empower- ment so highly. The hymn was written at the turn of the 18 th Century by John Newton. He was a converted slave trader who was so amazed that, after the way he had messed up in his rough life, he could still be forgiven and restored by the Grace of Jesus. Newton knew he was not good enough for God, but slowly he came to understand that being good enough was not the point. He was saved by God’s Grace, the free unmerited forgiveness that is available to each one of us as we put our trust in the Lord Jesus Christ. Why is this concept of free grace so difficult for us all to take on board? We live in a culture which worships our own achievements. We are encouraged to take responsibility for our own lives, to seek our own way to the top and, in some areas of sporting, business and political life, to strive to be successful whatever it takes. Now to some extent this is fine. Yes, we should be confident, and “stand tall” in whatever is our calling in life. But Christians belong to a saviour whose priorities were the opposite to these accepted norms. writes the Apostle Paul. Jesus did not grasp His “rights” as we are encouraged to do. No, He was obedient to His Heavenly Father, even to death on the cross. And it is only at the cross that God’s Grace is made possible for us. If we think we have something to contribute to our own salvation, then there is no salvation for us. If we think we are not good enough for God, as Newton did, then that is a great start, and we must accept that this is indeed the position we are in, because none of us is good enough for God. God in His Grace can then come to us in free forgiveness and new birth. As Newton put it John Roberts GOD R AMAZING C LOVE

EDITORIALMany thanks for all your encouragingcomments about the enlarged Magazine. It is certainly less nerve-wracking nowthat we don’t have to worry about fittingeverything in. We hope that you find the

“Parish Boxes” on Page 19 useful.

You will notice that we have several newadvertisers in this issue. We would liketo thank them for “Coming on board”. Wehave also lost some, due to peopleretiring, moving or no longer needing toadvertise.

There is an additional section on Page 18giving details of several Charity Eventstaking place over the next two months. Itis heart-warming to know that there is somuch support for Charity within the ExeValley each year and that such incredibleamounts of money are raised. One of theCharities mentioned is PSPA. We werenot familiar with this, so we looked it upand thought that you may not have heardabout it either. It is the ProgressiveSupranuclear Palsy Association. Thisincurable degenerative disease involvesthe gradual deterioration and death ofspecific volumes of the brain. Some ofthe resulting side effects include loss ofbalance, personality changes, visual andspeech problems, and difficulty inswallowing. Males and females areaffected equally and there is no racial, geographical or occupational link. About6 people per 100,000 population have PSP.

Prayer Services and Meetings are beingheld throughout the Parish during thisdifficult time, whilst we await a newRector . If you wish to attend one of these, please see the Parish Round-ups forindividual details

MOVING ON PART 3

Time flies, whether or not you areenjoying yourself!

Progress regarding the vacancy hascertainly not been in the fast lane sincethe last write-up went to print, thoughmuch time and effort have beenexpended during the interim. Themeeting of the parish representativeswith the Archdeacon made someprogress, but did not achieve theagreement sought.

As these notes are being written, inmid-July, the Archdeacon of Exeter ispart way through the process ofmeeting individually with our PCCs inan attempt to bring the Profiledocument to the point where it isacceptable to the Mission Communityas a whole. Please continue to pray forall involved, and for a successfuloutcome to the Archdeacon’s ‘mission’.

All other vacancy paperwork is nowcomplete, but whether the provisionaldate set for interviews can still be metis debatable.

The Group ‘Songs of Praise’ service atWashfield at the end of May was verywell attended and received. Thank you,Anna, for so capably leading the service,to organist Andrew Herniman, to allfrom our parishes who chose thehymns, and to Washfield for therefreshments after the service.

The first of our new regular Groupservices took place at Calverleigh atthe end of June, with a near-full church.Thank you, John, for leading, and all

those who took part, and this time,Calverleigh for the refreshments. Dueto a clash with Harvest Festivals, therewill be no group service in Septemberso, after Loxbeare at the end of August, the next will be at Oakford in October.David Beasley from The LeprosyMission will be the guest speaker at theNovember service – more details in duecourse.

NATURE NOTES

The long, late summer eveningsprovide an ideal opportunity for a

walk and the chance to catch Nature’swildlife unaware. I do not know if theydrop their defences somewhat but it isnot uncommon for me to stumbleacross a deer or a buzzard and it ishard to know, between observer andobserved, who is the most startled.Certainly you never cease to beamazed by the size of these creatureswhen you are a few yards from themand they crash away. Like all suchencounters you wish they lasted longerand that you had an action replaybutton available.

Indeed my only encounters with BarnOwls have occurred at this time, whenharvest and the lure of food haveenabled even a casual observer to seethese ghostly and silent apparitions asthey drift above the landscape. Theyare at no great height and they ignorethe fact that darkness has not fallenand the presence of CombineHarvesters, which even to a man sized

animal with limited imagination couldbe mistaken as a machine from Hell. Ican only imagine the sights that farmworkers of old enjoyed as theyharvested in the cool of the evening, trouser legs tied with bootlaces againstthe emergency exit of field creaturesand the skies filled with hunting extrasfrom Harry Potter. As darkness drops, the progress of all night hunters likeowls, badgers, bats and otters seemsto become less sinister and watchingthem as they continue their prowl is amore peaceful and less chargedoccupation. Even the lights of a distantCombined Harvester moving in flurry ofdust become less threatening and Ibegin to wonder if I am in Britain orwitnessing an American movie.

As I wander in the dusk I often wonderwhy animals are so scared of mywalking figure. During the day I knowhinds have long since been aware ofmy presence and a line of wing nutsface me long before my gaze has fallenon them. Although this is less so in theevening I have never understood whyall animals see me as such a threatwhilst they look at the noisome anddangerous motor car with suchimpunity. Thankfully their progressacross our lane never meets withdisaster and I am amazed at thenumber and age of scrapes, furrowsand runs that disfigure the lane sidebanks, in such constant use that anight-time congestion charge may bewarranted.

HAVE YOU READ ? …

The House of Bishops’ PastoralLetter’s comments on EQUALITY

“Because God chooses to loveevery human being equally….

it matters when materialbarriers are erected whichdivide people and communities. When people’s experiences ofbelonging… become toodifferent, they feel no commonbond or sympathy with eachother.

“Most people, when asked, subscribe to some version of theidea that all people are createdequal. Yet this is contradicted inthe way that some categories ofpeople are spoken about –people who are sick, disabled, terminally ill or otherwise unableto live the life that a consumersociety celebrates.

“There is a deep contradiction inthe attitudes of a society whichcelebrates equality in principle -yet treats some people, especially the poor andvulnerable, as unwanted, unvalued and unnoticed.”

and also …

The House of Bishops’ PastoralLetter’s comments on POWER

“Christians believe that Godalone is Lord of creation; our

allegiance to any other systemor power is only possible so longas it makes no claims whichcompromise our allegiance toGod. Christians should be waryof accumulations of powerwherever they take place...Where the state or the market,or any other powers, claim toomuch and stifle humanflourishing, people are dividedfrom one another and God’ssovereignty is mocked.

“The Biblical tradition is not only‘biased to the poor’, as oftennoted, but warns constantlyagainst too much power fallinginto too few hands. When it does, human sympathies are strainedto breaking point.”

THE EXETER POUND

Plans are progressing well tointroduce an exciting new

complementary currency in Exeterlater this summer. The Exeter Pound(£EP) will be launched with aCommunity Market in Cathedral Closeon 1 September. The currency will thenbe operational and tradable at anumber of outlets in the city, especiallylocal independent shops and cafes.

The project is supported by Exeter CityCouncil, local businesses, ExeterChiefs Rugby Club, Exeter City FootballClub, Exeter Cathedral and variouscommunity and voluntary organisations.

The main advantages of the ExeterPound are likely to be stronger supportfor Exeter firms, emphasising businessloyalty, greater benefit to the localeconomy, prompting a stronger senseof city and community identity, andpromoting an improved environment inthe longer term.

From a perspective of faith, thescheme will also encouragecommunity building, economic justiceand build better relationships of trustlocally (for more details on this see theattachment below).

This is a great way to further support tothe local community by trading in the£EP - which may well end up incollection plates and charitabledonations!

There will be four denominations – £EP1, £EP 5, £EP 10 and £EP 20, with aspecial commemorative £EP 15 notebeing printed for the World Cup Rugby.

Christians who divide their land, goodsor money in common.

However, the ‘People Who Share’ is aglobal movement that is making sharingmainstream. ‘We’re on a mission tobuild a Sharing Economy and we loveto help you discover that sharing is …fun, affordable, easy, accessible, mobile and of course social. THE CHURCH BELLS Nellie Croftreports: Sunday 14 June had beenorganised nationally as a grand ringingday to commemorate the 800th

anniversary of the signing of MagnaCarta. Lynette Costello from Cadburywanted to arrange a quarter peal in ourarea and we agreed to ring it at CruwysMorchard. Guy and I rang in it as wellas Lynette and three other ringers fromother towers. When we finished ringing, one of them said he had beenwondering if Guy’s ancestors werealready living here at the time of signingof Magna Carta. Guy confirmed thatthey were. We found this a fascinatingthought and were pleased we hadchosen to ring the commemorativequarter peal in a parish which includedone ringer whose history went back sofar. Nellie.

Sadly, we hear that many Christian book shops are struggling at this time, andsome (as mentioned above) have been forced to close. We are so thankful forthe Lord’s provision, enabling us to continue the work He gave us to do,

providing Christian resources for our community. (2 Corinthians 4 v 1 to 7) Weare aware of all the support we receive from you, both in prayer and by usingthe shop and cafe. A few of our supporters also provide direct financial help, either with one-off gifts or regular giving. If you would like more details about

setting up a standing order in our favour, or about Gift Aiding your gift, please ask.

So, thank you, and may God bless all of you, however you support us.

it mentioned, for his safety and theprotection of the strimmer, that hewould be most grateful if glass jars andpots were not used on the graves. Hisidea (that works well in other churches)is to use cut off middle sized milkcontainers or plastic squash bottles. He has also come across severalplaces of dog fouling. We hope thateveryone will help by remembering toshut the gate in case dogs are looseand if walking through the churchyard, dogs should be on leads please. Wehope we can all help him with the above. Some relatives and friends of lovedones have given permission for gravesto be levelled off. If you would agree tothis being done Andrew is happy to doit for you which would make his taskeasier. This would be less timeconsuming and more economical. However this will only be done if yougive permission. You could always giveour Churchwardens a ring if you wouldlike this done. We hope you will enjoy the summer andthe weather will be kind to us all.

STOODLEIGH

Chris Hill and Lizzie Collcutt weremarried at St Margaret’s Church on

Saturday 11 July. The ceremony wasconducted by Canon Jane Wilson. Itwas a simple and moving service, withreadings by Gill Prudden (two poems)and Roger Hill (from the Song ofSolomon). The church was beautifullydecorated by the Stoodleigh flowerladies and the bells were rung by the StMargaret’s ringers. The best men wereMark and Tim Hill. Chris, who grew up

at Quoit-at-Cross, runs StoodleighLandscaping and is a keen cricketer.Lizzie is an artist and works at theLantic Gallery in town. The receptionwas held in one of the big barns atQuoit-at-Cross, totally transformed forthe occasion. Roger and Linda Hillgenerously offered this magnificentvenue to the village for a dance andbarbecue the following week.

It was a delight to have John, Tori, Mimi,Eliza and Posy Griffiths, with theirfamily and friends, at the FamilyService on Sunday 7 June for thebaptism of Posy. We welcomed Posyinto the family of the church during theservice led by Revd Tim Hunt, and praythat God will bless and guide her.

A good number from our St Margaret'scongregation enjoyed, with other ExeValley parishes, the packed GroupService at Calverleigh Church onSunday 28 June. It is hoped that theseplanned monthly Group Services indifferent churches will be equally wellattended in the future.

At the Family Service on Sunday 5 July,we welcomed a visit, with a talk on theirwork, from our Church Mission Societypartners, Eric and Sandra Read. Theywere home for a two month break fromthe Philippines where they are workingwith the Philippine people onpioneering agricultural work, mainly infruit production. The members of thePCC afterwards joined with them forlunch at Church Cottage.

Once again we were lucky with theweather for Stoodleigh Village Day andthis year’s event was widely thought tobe the best yet, with even more childrenenjoying every minute of it. So many

people helped in so many ways. Thanks to all of them.

Congratulations to Emily and JohnNortham on the birth of Jack, a brotherto Eve, grandson to David and IrisWotton and great grandson to Davidand Betty.

A warm Stoodleigh welcome to Mattand Ellie and their baby son Joshua, who have moved into the newly rebuiltFinistere.

Keep your face to the sunshine andyou cannot see a shadow

Washfield, like the other villages inthe Exe Valley Mission Community,

is joining to pray that the preparationprocedure that is now in place, will goforward to advertise and select a newincumbent; with God's guidance.

St Mary's Church hosted the Songs ofPraise Group Service at the end of Mayto a full and happy church. The servicewas taken by Anna and featured arequest hymn from each of the nineparishes represented. Much goodfeedback was given regarding holdingthe Group Service monthly in a churchat different parishes.

What a lovely, sunny day we had for ourChurch Fete on Saturday 27 June. Wewere truly blessed as it had rained theprevious day and also the day after! We welcomed a large throng ofparishioners and visitors alike, which isalways nice - as it was to have the bellsringing and the Tiverton Concert Band'slovely music. Mrs Allison Trout openedthe proceedings and was presentedwith flowers from Ellie Lampard. Agreat variety of stalls and intriguingsideshows and games and the bouncycastle tempted all to spend their money- as did the delicious tea-time spreadserved in the hall afterwards. Verysincere thanks are extended to all thestall-holders and game organiserswhich included a local Guide groupcamping in the village. Thanks too, toeveryone who came, helped fill thestalls and tea tables and helped out inany way. Last but definitely not least, thanks to the Albery family who sokindly let us use their lawns again forthis event and to Denise who allowed

the use of her field for the invaluablecar parking. Because of all yourgenerosity, the day finished with agrand profit of £1098.80, an amazingfigure for a relatively small village (butone with a great, big heart!)

Our Harvest Festival celebrations willtake place on Sunday 13 Septemberwith a Church Service at 2.30pm. Thiswill be followed by sports and then a

“Bring and Share” tea in the hall. Pleasecan we decorate the Church onSaturday 12? Any donations of producewould be gratefully appreciated, thankyou

Best wishes are sent to all who are notenjoying the best of health at themoment. We are particularly thinking ofMrs Alice Balment, recovering from afall, Mrs Sylvia Cockram and Mrs IreneBolt and send you, and everyone elsefeeling under par at the moment, ourthoughts and prayers. Best wishes goto anyone celebrating special birthdaysand other occasions and send specialwishes to the youngsters starting orchanging schools or colleges orbeginning university. Good Luck to youall.

Congratulations to Lizzie Parker onwinning a British Citizen Award for allher charity work in Africa. This includesgetting chickens into Bwaise, Ugandaand setting up the UK arm of AFFCADwhich she supports - as well asteaching full-time! Liz received heraward at The Palace of Westminster inJuly. Well done Lizzie, this is so welldeserved.

Perhaps someone in the Parish shouldhave made a Lizzie scarecrow tomingle with all our other heroes that

popped up during the ScarecrowFestival. Once again this was wellsupported with over 30 heroes andheroines taking part. As part of theevent we also enjoyed a Cream Tea,walking quiz and Treasure Hunt plusthe Grand Final with a barbecue. Therewere many classes with deservingwinners (see Village website for detailsof these, plus photos) and lots of goodhumour. Those deserving our thanksare all who helped plan and organisethe Festival and worked hard in makingit such a success. It was also great tosee the many newcomers in the villagetaking part and embracing this quirkyevent and good to see them winningprizes. Well done everyone.

By the time you read this piece, scaffolding will be up around the VillageHall as we have been fortunate enoughto win a substantial grant from ViridorCredits, so that we can replace theoriginal hall roof, lead valleys andwindows. After the 91 years thesethings have weathered, so this work isvital, in order to take it forward as acomfortable, warm and serviceablevenue for hire by all our local groupsand others who wish to book our lovelyhall. WITHLEIGH

At the time of writing, we are hopingfor a dry day for our Fete on

Saturday, 18 July so that a decision willnot have to be made as to whether wecan be in Henry and Shirley’s garden orin the Village Hall.

On 8 June, Mary Palmer was buried inour churchyard after a service in ourChurch. Mary is now with her husband,Sir John. Mary lived at Lower Withleighbefore moving to Nynehead. She wasa regular churchgoer here whilst livingat Lower Withleigh, and a member ofthe Women’s Institute. She will beremembered with great affection. Ourlove and prayers are with Mary’s family.

We say farewell to Lee, Zoe, Ellie andZach Arthurs, who have moved fromFirbanks to Tiverton. We hope youhave settled in your new home.

We welcome the new occupants toWithleigh Farm and hope to see you inthe village soon.

The Village Hall AGM was held onTuesday 23 June, in the Village Hall. Itwas good to have support from peoplein the village who are not on the hallcommittee. The chairman DuncanKittow thanked everyone for all theirhelp and support throughout the year, with special thanks to David Sellick forall of his hard work keeping the outsideof the hall tidy, also to Christine, Janetand Gerald for organising the Bingosand Whist Drives.

At the Village Hall meeting it wassuggested that we hold a Supper and

Short Play Evening. Janet Stacey hasagreed to produce a short play, ifanybody would be interested in takingpart or helping in any way pleasecontact Janet on 253072.

On Sunday, 5 July, we welcomed Mo, avolunteer from Devon Freewheelers, together with his motorbike. He gave avery interesting talk on the history andwork of Devon Freewheelers. Blood fortransfusions and organs for transplantsare just two of the things transportedon the motorbikes. Riders are nowtrained as First Aiders, and some carrydefibrillators, so can be diverted foremergencies, if necessary, whilst theyare en route to their destinations. Mois located in this area for TivertonHospital and says he is kept busy attimes, transporting items to and fromour Hospital. He was presented with acheque from Withleigh Church for £150,and the congregation gave generouslyto a retiring collection of a further £100.

We think about all those awaiting examresults and we hope these will allowthem to pursue their chosen career. We hope all those changing or startingschool will settle in well.

Our best wishes go to Laura Headonand Tommy Butcher, who are to bemarried at St Catherine’s on 1 August.May you know God’s blessing on yourfuture life together.

This year’s Garden & Produce Showwill be held on Saturday 15 August. Please remember to get your entries toHenry Cruwys by Tuesday 11 August.Doors open at 7.30pm, and all arewelcome to come and see the variety of

Light Shining out of Darkness

God moves in a mysterious way,His wonders to perform. He plants His footsteps in the seaAnd rides upon the storm.

Ye fearful saints, fresh courage take,The clouds you so much dreadAre big with mercy and shall breakIn blessings on your head.

Judge not the Lord by feeble senseBut trust Him for His grace;Behind a frowning providenceHe hides a smiling face.

His purposes will ripen fastUnfolding every hour; The bud may have a bitter tasteBut sweet will be the flower.

Blind unbelief is sure to errAnd scan His work in vain;God is His own interpreterAnd He will make it plain.

Keep smiling …

A Sunday School teacher asked her class tomemorise the 23rd Psalm. She gave the children

a month to learn it.

One little boy was very excited about the task but, although he practised and practised,he could hardly get past the first line.

The day arrived for the children to recite Psalm 23and he was extremely nervous.

When his turn came, he walked up to the front andproudly said “The Lord is my Shepherd ~

and that’s all I need to know”
