Dear Parents, Friends, Staff and Students,

At our first assembly this month, following the 90th Anniversary celebrations, I commented that August is the wow month. Indeed it is proving to be so. Curriculum and learning highlights include celebrations of Home Economics week, Science week, and the upcoming Book Week. Within this mix Year 12s are completing final preparations for the QCS test. For all students and staff we are moving into an important assessment period, but I reiterate our understanding of assessment. It is for learning, not an endpoint.

The Catholic Music Festival, held over four days following the Exhibition holiday, has become the premier music event of its kind in the Asia Pacific region. Over 13,000 students from Catholic schools across Queensland participate in this festival celebrating young people making music, developing skills, talents and friendships. Our College had over 120 students from Year 7 – 12 performing in choirs, ensembles, the College Band and Orchestra. It was a pleasure to mix with parents, to hear our students perform so capably, with obvious enjoyment. Congratulations to all our students, music staff and Director of Music, Ms Miriam Townsley. Well done!

Our Aerobics performers continue to shine with the Mt St Michael’s team awarded the Queensland Cup for being the Champion School at the recent State Championships. Subsequently, we have almost 50 students competing in the national titles in Bendigo in the last week of the term in September. This includes every team member which is an amazing achievement! Congratulations to all the team members, to Ms Pickering and her coaches.

One of our favourite days of the year is on the horizon with the CaSSSA Athletics Carnival next Monday. We know our athletes have been committed to training even on these cold winter mornings and once again we have assembled a talented and well coached team. They are fit and healthy and ready to go!

In the middle of August whilst our students enjoy the luxury of a three day break with the Exhibition holiday, the two student free days provide

valuable professional learning time for our staff. All teaching staff participate in a collaborative marking task, working with a question on the SRI (Short Response Item) from the QCS Simulation paper, which our students completed in July. This enables the QCS team to provide specific feedback to Year 12s prior to the test and it also gives teachers the opportunity to understand the nuances of the learning tasks of the QCS paper, along with the strengths and areas for development of our student body. This work has been identified as some of the most important professional learning for teachers.

These fine winter days have also enabled excellent progress with our new Arts Precinct clearly taking shape. We can now “see” the three classrooms, the staff room, open courtyard, the lift well and the flexible learning areas. This will be a fine addition to our education facilities and the whole ambience of the College.

Meanwhile our plans for the renovation of A block are also taking shape. The old Art rooms will become a middle school learning facility for Year 9 students with four large classrooms, an adjacent downstairs locker area, with a small landscaped garden area. Mrs Lilley, Middle School Co-ordinator and Ms Lennon, Year 9 Pastoral Leader, have been particularly involved in researching classroom designs, furniture and materials, to create contemporary and attractive flexible learning areas in this old building, utilizing the natural light and larger classroom spaces. We are also working with a consultant and our interior designer to assist us with this project.

On a larger scale, I am very pleased to announce that the College Board has endorsed a proposal to develop a College Master Plan 2015 – 2025 which will outline our vision for the educational facilities of the College, commensurate with the learning needs of this 21 century, in alignment with our unique heritage. What will the College look like when we celebrate our 100th anniversary?

We are commencing a consultation process to include staff, parents and students as we prepare a brief to engage an architect to take the project forward in 2016. The important parameters are that the Master Plan is within our current footprint and enrolment cap of 900 and that it must be realistic and affordable. More details will follow and I am looking forward to hearing diverse and creative ideas. How exciting is this!

We are delighted to announce that the five MSM students who travelled overseas to represent Australia at the ANAC Aerobics World Championships were awarded an incredible 5th place. This is an amazing achievement on an international level and the Moulin Rouge team consisting of Gemma Carter, Gracie Egan, Annalise Gowing, Grace Porter and Gemma Swanson should be very proud. The team was only 0.3 of a point behind first place which shows the intensity of the competition.

Alexandra McDonough who has been successful in her application to attend the QUT Vice-Chancellor's science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) camp.

This provides high-achieving Year 11 students with an exciting opportunity to attend an interactive 5-day program, and engage in solving some of the major challenges facing our society and planet today.

While at the camp in the September holidays, Alexandra will take advantage of the unique learning environment and have an opportunity to experience ground-breaking research as it happens, inside our world-class research facilities.

Nicole Westerdale (Year 11) was selected to attend the FEAST (Future Experiences in Agriculture, Science and Technology) program at UQ Gatton. While there she took part in many laboratory sessions and hands on activities including animal anatomy and structure, health checks on horses and investigations into pollen diversity. Students also attended a tour of UQ St Lucia where they worked with lasers to make holograms with 3D images and fly drones. During this time she made many friends and took part in social and sporting activities while living on campus for the five days.

The Australian History Competition attracted over 23,000 participants from around Australia in 2015. Year 10 students got involved and completed the competition in May. In particular it aligned to the Australian Curriculum, testing students ability to evaluate and interpret sources. We had some outstanding results, with ELEANOR HAMBLETON achieving the top result within the College, receiving a High Distinction.

All Year 8 Humanities, Year 10 Humanities students and all Year 11 and 12 Geography students challenged their geographical skills and knowledge in the annual AUSTRALIAN GEOGRAPHY COMPETITION. Over 76,000 secondary school students from around Australia took part in the competition this year. This is always an excellent opportunity for the students to test their geographic knowledge and skills. Congratulations to all the students who received a High Distinction, receiving their certificates on assembly.

Ministry Care

Mt St Michael’s Staff and students takes great pride in the Mission and Values of the College and as an extension of this, we are continuing with our Ministry Care Programme this year.

We are aware that there are students and families within our community who are at risk due to a variety of factors. So, through the various networks of the Parents & Friends Association, the College Foundation, the Past Pupils, the Pastoral Programme at the College and simply by word of mouth, we hope to become aware of these situations and to respond on a case by case basis.

The College acknowledges that just by being here we are carrying on the mission and vision of the Foundress of the Sisters of Charity, Mary Aikenhead. The poor, the vulnerable, the marginalised in society were always close to the heart of Mary Aikenhead.

During the course of 2014 we responded as a community through preparing meals for families whose difficult circumstances we had been made aware of. We will continue this over the course of this year.

Onsite parking in the Grantuly grounds, undercover in the Ionian Centre and within the campus near the Sophia Centre is only permitted for staff.
