Disney’s Magic at 2016 4-H Camp!
It’s a Small World was a resounding theme throughout this year’s 4-H Camp! Lafayette, Iowa and Green
County 4-H members in grades 3 through 8th, attended 4-H camp at Upham Woods in Wisconsin Dells, June
13-15th. The trip started with a jet boat tour (braving the splashing waters of the jet boat drivers) in the
Wisconsin Dells, and continued to Upham Woods Camp. After completing a scavenger hunt to learn the
boundaries of camp, the campers attended sessions learning new crafts, swimming, canoeing, international
foods event and archery. As a new twist to include older campers, Adventure Camp was run by Green County
Adult Volunteers the 7th and 8th grade members. They learned how to set up and take down a tent and how to
cook meals over the fire.
A special thanks to the Lafayette County 4-H Adult Volunteers and Camp Counselors as they led the campers in
songs at the fire, ventured up to Peanut Butter Mountain to do team building activities, and showed the campers
how to meet new friends and keep the old! Cruella de Vil and Minny Mouse made an appearance during the 2nd
night campfire! The Lafayette County Archery Leaders are always a hit – and travel to Upham to help 4-H
Campers learn more about Archery. This year Jeff McCarthy and Hannah McCarthy, Jr. Archery Leader and
Dylan Zasada, Jr. Archery Leader taught archery to the crew.
Congratulations to Sam Turpin, as well, for being a statewide winner in the “what I like about Upham” essay
contest. His winning entry won a $50 sponsorship from Upham towards the total cost of the trip for Lafayette
County!

“Picturing Our Success at the 2016 State 4-H & Youth
Conference”
Every June, hundreds of youth from around the state, passionate about leadership and positive community
change, come together and spend 4 days at UW-Madison to grow as leaders, meet other youth, and have the
opportunity to live in a college setting. Attending the 96th Wisconsin 4-H & Youth Conference June 20th – 23rd
were Allison Thompson, Reagan Russell, Cheyenne Burgess, Cody Crompton, Zach Woodworth and Dylan
Zasada.
Delegates participated in seminars which focused on leadership, community service and other life attributes. As
part of the community service projects, Thompson helped make blankets for Marshfield’s Ministry St. Joseph’s
Hospital Comfort Carts, and Russell & Woodworth donated books that were distributed to Wisconsin children
who will benefit from reading their own great books! Youth were accompanied by Mikayla Wedige, 2016
Lafayette County 4-H Summer Intern.
While at the conference, youth were able to attend seminars and learn a variety of topics, from sailing to
comfort quilting. Lori Berget, Lafayette County 4-H Youth Educator and Bridgett Neu, 4-H Volunteer taught a
workshop entitled “What’s in Your Dough?” – focusing on field to finished dough products – and participants
were able to learn about grains used in flour, mill their own flour, and bake bread, muffins and cookies using
many different items such as millet, flax, wheat, honey and other ingredients. 25 youth attended the workshop,
and took away good information and food!
This 4-H Trip is made possible through the 4-H Friendship Fund, managed by the Lafayette County 4-H
Leaders Board. The Board provides scholarships for 40% of all trips that 4-H members sign-up to take, to help
off-set the costs of the trips. If you are interested in becoming a “Friend of 4-H”, please contact the UW-
Extension Office at (608) 776-4820.

Adventure and Discovery Day
Over 50 Lafayette County Explorers and Cloverbuds got a taste of the county Fair on June 30, 2016. The youth
participated in different craft making projects and learned about some of the animal projects they could exhibit
at the fair when they get older. The Lafayette County 4-H Ambassadors, with the guidance of Mikayla Wedige
(Summer 4-H Intern) organized and taught the workshops, and many businesses also donated supplies used at
the event. A “colorful” demonstration was given by the Norgard girls – and youth were able to see the action of
science happening!
The Cloverbud youth who attended the event made paper lanterns and squirt gun paintings they could take to
the fair, and the Explorers made terrariums they could take to the fair, also. There were demonstrations of
different animal projects which included: Poultry by Mackenzie Torstenson (Small Animal Superintendent),
Lambs – by Morgan & Payton VanSchyndle (and Grandma & Grandpa), and Dogs by Alexis Fladseth – Jr. Dog
Leader and Cody Crompton.
4-H Ambassadors that helped at the day
included: Alexis Fladseth, Cody Crompton,
Victorria Meylor, Cody Wick, Zach
Woodworth, Michael Kendall, Hannah
McCarthy, Cheyenne Burgess and Madeline
Andrae. Thanks also to Mariah Kendall,
Tomi Daly and Emma Berget for their help in
making this event fun and educational!
Don’t forget to mark your calendars for National 4-H Week October 2-8, 2016

without a certified leader supervising the range.
All leaders must first complete one 12-hour workshop to be certified. After that, you may be eligible to attend a

4-HAmbassador Article
As a 4-H Ambassador, I have realized that it is important to let people know about all of the cool
programs that 4-H has to offer. I love archery, and I hope to obtain a scholarship to go to college someday
using my archery skills. If you have never shot a bow, I would encourage you to come to a practice at the
Belmont School during our 4-H Archery Season.
The new season will begin in January, and there are a lot of opportunities to shoot your bow during the
4-H year. If you don’t own a bow, that is fine, the 4-H Archery program has some for you to use. There are a
lot of older archery members that are willing to help you learn, also. If you would like more information or
would like me to visit your 4-H meeting and give a short presentation, please let me know. Have a great school
year! -Cody Wick

FAREWELL
As summer is coming to a close, my time here at the Lafayette county extension office, is also coming to an end. I would like to thank Lori Berget, Emma Berget, Lisa Carpenter, Committee members, office staff and Lafayette county 4-H members and parents, for making this experience truly amazing. It saddens me that is has to come to an end. I have had a remarkable time getting to know everyone in UW-Extension and Lafayette County. The skills and life lessons I have gained this summer will greatly benefit me, as I enter the workforce after graduation in May, 2017. Until next time,
Mikayla Wedige
