Dr. Bolsinger was the keynote speaker at our most recent Tri-Presbytery Conference, and he specializes in leadership development within churches. Using the example of the Lewis and Clark expedition, Bolsinger asks the question, "What happens when you find yourself in uncharted territory?" Lewis and Clark expected to find a waterway to the Pacific Ocean, but instead they found themselves facing the Rocky Mountains. In much the same way, the modern church finds itself needing to adapt to cultural changes that have put us in uncharted territory. How do we engage with the community around us? How do we connect with a generation that might not have discovered a need for church? How do we adapt to our changing culture, and what challenges might we face along the way? How will we navigate the risks and losses that will accompany the journey? These are just some of the topics we have begun discussing as a session. As we have begun contemplating how to move "off the map" - we've been discussing how to become visible in the community around us, and how we can embody our core values of mission and serving others in new ways. At our last meeting we began discussing the idea of choosing one community mission to partner with each year. This would not replace any of our existing partnerships or relationships (such as our longstanding ties and support of PCM) but this would offer us an opportunity for unified service to a particular mission in our area where we could meet new people, and unite in service not just as individuals, but as representatives of our congregation. As we continue to discuss and explore our options, the session would love to hear your ideas. Which agencies would you like to see us devote a year of service to? What other ideas do you have for helping us to move "off the map" so that we can engage the community around us in new ways? Please continue to hold our leaders in your prayers as we listen for God's voice and seek to follow where He leads. Dear Friends - The session has been reading a terrific book on leadership called, Canoeing the Mountains: Christian Leadership in Uncharted Territory by Tod Bolsinger. Blessings, Pastor Jenna

The Fellowship Hall Sunday School Class continues its studies in covenant living during the month of August. We will be looking at both the Old and New Testaments and the books of I Samuel, Ruth, and Ephesians. This month invites us to look more closely at personal perspectives and relationships between friends, mothers and daughters, within marriages, and families. Our scriptures have been closely related to our liturgical calendar and we have often found support and additional guidance from our Pastor's sermons. Summer is coming to a close and school will soon be back in progress. So as we finish up our vacationing let us return to Bible study and worship together. We hope to see you soon. Please feel free to grab a donut and some coffee and then join us in the Fellowship Hall for a lecture/discussion with God's word relating to covenant.

We will also use a new book, “The Courage to See: Daily Inspiration from Great Literature” by Greg Garrett and Sabrina Fountain.

Regular attendance is not necessary since the devotional studies are different each week. We welcome anyone who would like to join us.

The devotional topics will be in the September Voice.

Upstairs Parlor Class

The Upstairs Parlor Class is looking forward to an open circle of fellowship, fun, and friendship (new & old) this season. The group is actively looking for a new manager and will happily negotiate terms with interested candidates. All class members are encouraged to express their interest. Rumors have even circulated of a plan for rotating leadership! All are welcome to drop in for an hour of encouragement and support or to become a part of the regulars. Hope to see you one Sunday in the Upstairs Parlor!

WHAT TO DO UNTIL THE AMBULANCE ARRIVES

On Saturday, September 7 from 9:00 am to 11:00 am, Sheila Rea from Baptist Health will be giving a CPR class. This is designed for lay people to allow them to care for an unconscious person until the ambulance arrives. This class can handle up to 12 participants. If you would like to reserve a spot, please contact Rick Smith at [email protected] or 270-559-2885

EXPERIENCING PCM

As a new board member for PCM we were given the challenge and opportunity to “experience” PCM in action by working in the food pantry, working as the receptionist, volunteering to unload the commodities truck when it arrives, and assisting the staff in distributing the commodities to our seniors. I worked in the food pantry and had a wonderful experience. I have donated my finances to PCM for many years, but never my time. I encourage anyone that is able to participate in the experience. I appreciate the work of PCM on a whole new level. I will be sharing with you the work of PCM as I journey through my service on the Board. I hope you’ll come along for the ride, if able. -Chris Krueger

FALL GATHERING

FRIENDS OF MT. KENTON CEMETERY, INC.

The Board of Mt. Kenton will be hosting a Community Fish Fry, August 15, 2019, from 5:00 – 7:00PM in Fellowship Hall at our church. Proceeds from the event will be used to offset expenses at the cemetery. Donations of $15 per person will be collected at the door for a meal of fried fish, hush puppies, slaw, white beans, dessert and beverage. Reservations can be made by calling the cemetery at 270-554-1566 or Chris Krueger 270-443-6239/270-519-6445 by August 9. Bill Ford will be in attendance to sign his numbered prints of the gates. Mt. Kenton Cemetery, Inc. was previously owned and managed by First Presbyterian Church. It has been functioning independently for several years. As secretary of the Board, I’ve come to appreciate the number of our church ancestors that are buried in Mt. Kenton. Many of you have purchased gravesites as well. No maintenance fees are required and income for the cemetery comes solely from lot sales and burials. We pride ourselves in our appearance and our historical standing in the community. We hope you and your friends will join us for this event as we strive to increase needed funds to maintain the cemetery as the beautiful landmark it has been for years. -Chris Krueger

THE SURVEYS ARE IN!

In the June/July edition of The Voice, there was a survey on the delivery system: mail or email. There were not enough votes for email to consider this option right now but stay posted in the future for updates!

In Memory Of

CHOIR

IRENE BEAVER

Irene Eveline Beaver, 100, born August 12, 1918 passed away on July 22, 2019. Irene’s life is celebrated by many members of First Presbyterian Church. She was always envied for her excellent mobility, even in her old years. In fact, many people were jealous that she could still put her leg behind her head with no effort! Everyone that knew her has wonderful memories about how much she loved being the center of attention and how she was always the life of the party. And of course, everyone remembers that crooked smile of hers! She will be missed by many.
