Over 50 Alumni of the Chamber’s Leadership Morristown Program gathered for breakfast at Walters State

Community College on Thursday morning to welcome the 19 participants of the 2017 Class. This is the largest

class of participants since the first year of the program in 1984.

Chamber President Marshall Ramsey welcomed the group and thanked alumni, participants and employers

for recognizing the importance of this program to develop leaders in our community. During the breakfast, gradu-

ates of the 2016 Class were recognized and presented with a certificate and gift from Stan Greene with Morristown

Utility System/Fibernet who chaired the planning committee in 2016.

Following the introduction of the 2017 participants, 2017 planning committee chair Paul Lynch with Purkey,

Carter, Compton, Swann & Carter welcomed them and encouraged them to take advantage of the wonderful oppor-

tunities to not only learn about their community, but to make new friends and contacts.

After the kick-off breakfast adjourned, the class moved into their first session of the 14 week program which

included a DiSC profile, ice breakers and team building exercises. Leadership Morristown will continue with ses-

sions every other week covering such topics as social services, healthcare, tourism, retail, arts, culture, recreation,

industry, government, public safety, infrastructure and education. A full list of participants is listed on page 2.

A s we continue through the heat of summer,

I have noticed the traffic start to get heavy

in the AM again. It is back to school time.

I have had the pleasure of seeing some of

our best and brightest students who have in-

terned at local manufacturers present their story

of their summer. A summer without pools and

ball fields, but a summer of experiencing what

real life will be like. Earning their own money,

waking up early to go to work. Skills that we

often take for granted, many of these kids are

learning earlier and earlier.

Many of the students had a firm stance

that college was their only path or that no col-

lege was the way to go, but as I watched the

presentation, you could immediately see the

light come on. Students once only considering 4

year degrees are now interested in the TCAT.

How could they not…no student loans, 100%

job placement, in demand transferrable skill

sets.

I saw students who had that chosen path

from birth bestowed upon them by their parents

make an abrupt change of course as maybe their

parent’s ideal path didn’t match their skill set.

One stat I use often is that it is great that

25% of our community graduate with a 4 year

degree, but let us never forget the 75% of stu-

dents that will lead this community into the fu-

ture.
