Pastor’s corner continued from page 1

One of the tasks that I have as pastor is to maintain the good conditions of the parish grounds and build-ings. In the beginning of this fiscal year (July 2020 to June 2021) for our local church of San Jose, I have established a Maintenance Fund for the par-ish. This first Sunday monthly second collection will help with parish up-keep and preservation of the parish grounds and buildings. I hope that you will help me be a good steward of what we have inherit-ed from those who have come before us. I would like then to thank those who have already given gen-erously in this second collection.

Santa Teresa Church 8-week Program on Racism

Santa Teresa Church invites all Catholic Christians to educate ourselves about racism. The parish will be offering an 8-week program, based on the United States Catholic Conference of Bishops' Document - "Open Wide Your Hearts" addressing racism and the need to eliminate it. The program begins August 12th, at 6:45 pm, via Zoom. Each session will be about 90-minutes and offer opportunities to learn, ask questions, share experiences, pray, sing, hear scripture, and reflect.

The Reflections

Social justice corner Powerful Like a Whisper

This is the tenth Sunday after Pentecost, and we are learning God is omnipresent; being present everywhere at the same time, as though all-enveloping. That was a big word I learned in my youthful years of religious edu-cation. My experience here is about the power omnipresent in God’s whisper.

In our first reading, Elijah does not see the Lord in the wind, earthquake, or fire. It is after this when Elijah is in fear, hiding his face, he hears the whisper of the Lord. In the second reading, Paul joins with the Holy Spir-it as he lay witness to his personal sorrow when many of his people do not believe the teaching of Jesus. In the Gospel, the disciples are in fear until they here the voice of Jesus.

When you hear this voice, calling on your heart, whisper, it brings with it great peace and security. Most of the troubles and trials of our lives are caused by the injustice and lack of charity of others. The remainder can be attributed to our own flaws and/or reactions. God does not bring about the storms in our life, but God does allow them to happen, that we may hear the whisper and draw closer to Him.

God is omnipresent. It is “I” that limits my experience by trying to keep God in the box of my perception. I sometimes find myself whining or texting in all capitals. This gives me a false sense that I am being heard. When, in fact, I should be quiet. This silence can actually be more powerful. It allows me the time and quiet to hear the whisper of God. A whisper that can carry power beyond any box I may think I can contain it in. A power that can calm my fears. A power that can bring me joy. A power that can ripple to others. My true power is in the quiet when I can hear the whispers of God, reminding me how loved and supported I truly am.

What unexpected way have you experience God? How have you step out in faith? Did you rely on God to help you or did you do it all yourself? How can we help others now in the storms they are battling be reas-sured that God is present?
