Like the disciples after eating and getting satisfied, they were unable to know their master. Let us never forget that the life we enjoy every day, the family you have, the material things you possess, are all from God. We should use them for His glory and not to distract us from Him and loving one another. Remember, Christ comes to us not in cars, not in food, not in guns, not in material things, but He could be in that street beggar, that friend at school, your spouse, your neighbor or those challenges you are facing. Focus on Him, pray and trust in Him as your only savior; He will always stretch His hand to save you. Just listen to His voice as you pray, read and meditate on the Scriptures. God Bless you. TAKE COURAGE; DO NOT BE AFRAID.

Fishermen and sailors know very well how dangerous the waters can be when you face a storm. Most of you remember the Titanic movie and how terrifying it is even to watch. And so, this weekend, we hear about Jesus sending His disciples across the sea, aware that they would encounter some challenges on their journey. He did this not to put their lives in harm’s way, but to strengthen their faith and trust in Him. He knew that they would need His help at the right moment to save them from the storms.

However, when the storms hit their boat and He came to their rescue, they could not even recognize Him. I don’t know whether it’s because they were too satisfied; since He had just fed thousands of people and the disciples had gathered twelve baskets of leftovers. But even having recognized Him, Peter still doubted despite all the miracles Christ had performed before them.

In our own lives too, there are moments when we forget to trust in the Lord. We forget all the good things He has done for us especially when we encounter certain storms in life and lose trust. Maybe you lost your loved one, lost your job, struggling with your health, family challenges, etc. Let those storms help you to refocus on Jesus; because He is waiting for you to ask Him, “Lord, save me!”

We also lose our focus on Christ when we are satisfied with the worldly things and forget the provider.

PTO 365 DAY RAFFLE WINNERS

I wanted to write a very inspirational and positive article this week. But nothing came to me. We are in such troubling times that it’s almost impossible to see any kind of normal and peaceful life in the future. That’s not good. There is so much anxiety and fear

out there. There is so much uncertainty and pessimism out there. There is so much frustration and division out there. It could be the cause of despair.

Of course, the news media doesn’t help. You can watch one network and think the world is coming to an end tomorrow, and tune into another news source and think it’s a completely different world we live in. You can’t trust anything off the internet; but you really can’t trust anything off cable news. One doctor tells you one thing, another something totally different. One politician says this, another that. Political and social dialogue has been reduced to total opposition and character assassination; civil protest has become rioting and destruction. The pandemic just makes these deep-seated divisions and social dysfunction more acute.

Where does this all come from? In the past there has been division and conflict in the social sphere and in politics, but never like this. When did this situation of today begin? You can probably trace it back to the 1700’s and the Enlightenment, when the intellectual elite made Man the center of it all and not God. Religion became myth and Science became absolute truth. This led to the 19th and early 20th century lines of thought of Darwin’s theory of Evolution, Marxism, and Freudianism, which would inevitably lead to relativism and nihilism, capped off with Nietzsche’s famous phrase, “God is dead” and ending with Hitler’s Final Solution. Without God as the center and apex of thought, Man goes the way of power, fueled by selfishness. Man’s fallen state, which is due to the effects of original sin, drives him to live by Darwin’s “survival of the fittest,” Marx’s “class warfare,” and Freud’s “sex without responsibility,” eventually allowing Man to say proudly that one race or class of people is expendable and can and should be exterminated (for example, the Holocaust and the Pro-Abortion Movement).

So, today, what is the root cause of the state of affairs of our world? It is that we don’t recognize God as supreme and absolute authority and good as our Creator and Redeemer. In specific terms, the division of our world is not political or economic, it’s religious. And in the final analysis, at the heart of it all is a division between being Pro-Life or Pro-Death (or as it is called today, “Pro-Choice”). We will never have civil discourse or compromise in solving the problems that are before us until we are all truly Pro-Life.

HELP US SEND SUPPORT TO FR. ELIAS’ HOME PARISH IN UGANDA

St. Susanna is “twinning” with Fr. Elias’ home Parish in Uganda (Our Lady of Perpetual Help, Nyamitanga Parish). Through the generous donations of St. Susanna parishioners, funds have been raised to help provide food for 1,400 families who are in need because of the COVID lockdown in their country. Each family received a bag of corn flour and a bag of beans. At this time, Fr. Richard Ssebugwawo, pastor of OLPH, has identified 600 additional families in need of food. The amount needed to feed 600 families is $5,343 or $9.00/family. We will continue to collect donations through August.

If you are interested in participating, there are multiple ways to support this relationship: • Send a check made out to St. Susanna Church with “Our

Lady of Perpetual Help - Uganda” on the memo line. You can drop the check off to the Parish Office or mail to St. Susanna Church, Attn. Jodi Tucker, 616 Reading Road, Mason, Ohio.

• Online Giving: www.osvhub.com/stsusanna/funds. If you have an account set up, log in or there is a Quick Give option. Click on Give a New Gift and select Our Lady of Perpetual Help – Uganda.

ST. SUSANNA PRAYER SHAWL MINISTRY Calling all knitters and quilters – the Prayer Shawl Ministry needs you! St. Susanna’s Wrapped In Love Ministry is extending an invitation for new members to help create Charity Quilts and Prayer Shawls which are blessed and shared with the Schuh Center, area hospitals, and other people in need in our Community. This beautiful outreach Ministry is also accepting donations of

yarn, any fabric (scraps and strips welcome), thread, and batting which can be dropped off at

the Parish Office. Helping this amazing group of talented volunteers can be done in the comfort of your own home. If you like to sew and have a heart for giving your time and talents through creating a beautiful keepsake that will comfort and share the love of Christ with others, please contact Brenda Harvey at 513-257-6412 or email at [email protected].

CALLING ALL EVERYDAY COOKS! We need you - please sign up to join the Priest Meal Ministry!

Once a month, the members of our group plate up an EXTRA plate of whatever we are cooking for our families that night and bring it to the parish office for Fr. Elias. Our wonderful priest enjoys having a

home-cooked meal 3 nights a week - thanks to the generosity of the members of our ministry.

Especially on a busy night when he doesn’t have time to do anything but grab fast food, he can come home and warm up a meal that reminds him of the love and the family that is our parish. Whatever you are cooking will do! (Yes, we serve him things like spaghetti, sloppy joes, and vegetable soup!)

If you are able to help out once every month or two, please contact Maureen Sorce at [email protected], or text/call 513-668-3000. God Bless You!

ST. SUSANNA MOM’S GROUP

St. Susanna Mom’s Group (SSMG) is eager to kick off our 2020-2021 season! SSMG is a Catholic group of mothers and expectant mothers, who assist and support one another, engage in community services, prayer, and fellowship. SSMG meets once a month on a weeknight. Meetings consist of group service projects, crafts and activities, and the opportunity to meet and connect with other parish moms! We also host kids parties, moms night out events, kids day out events and faith formation opportunities. This year’s co-presidents are Jennifer McIntire and Megan Eickhoff.

We would love to see returning members and always encourage new members to join! Please visit www.stsusanna.org/moms-group for information on registration and dues or reach out to Jennifer and Megan via email at [email protected]. We look forward to seeing you soon!

MONTHLY DEVOTION

August is the month of the Immaculate Heart of Mary.

WEEKLY FAMILY DISCUSSION

Question: Why does sin hurt our relationship with Jesus?

Possible answers: • God loves us so much. When we sin, we hurt our relationship

with God. • As explained in the Catechism of the Catholic Church, sin is an

offense against God. • Remember, when we hurt someone else, it hurts our relationship

with Jesus, too. Jesus loves the other person very much. • Sin leads us away from God; it does not bring us closer to Him.• Think about chairs! Imagine you are sitting and talking with a

friend. Now slowly turn the chair away. The more you turn, the more difficult it is to hear and see your friend.

• Now think of you and Jesus in the chairs! When we sin, we turn the chair a little more away from Jesus. The more our chair turns from Jesus, the harder for us to see/hear Him.

• This is why we meet Jesus in the Sacrament of Confession (also known as Penance or Reconciliation).

• We receive God’s Love, Mercy, and Graces in Confession. We talk to God and work on growing in our relationship with Him.

• When going to the Sacrament of Reconciliation, think about fully turning the chair back to Jesus, and being face to face with Him; so much easier to hear/see Jesus now.

AUGUST FEAST DAYS & MEMORIALS

TALK WITH YOUR KIDS

Devotion to the Immaculate Heart of Mary means to recall the emotions of joy and sadness that Mary experienced in her own life. When you look at an image of the Immaculate Heart of Mary, you see a burning heart surrounded with a crown of thorns and pierced with a sword. The Immaculate Heart of Mary shows us that despite the sufferings of Jesus (crown of thorns), He loves all of us, regardless of our sins, and spilled His blood (the sword) in hope that we would join Him

in Heaven. It is for this reason that despite the trials and sufferings of Jesus, Mary’s heart still burns with love and devotion.

As the mother of Jesus, Mary experienced the same feelings our own mother has for us. Whether we are happy or sad, our mom shares in our feelings (even if she doesn’t tell you).

The Bible tells us that “and his mother kept all these things in her heart” (Lk 2:51). We can share in Mary’s emotions and constant love for Jesus by recalling the mysteries of the Rosary and by praying the seven sorrows.

PRAYER FOCUS THIS WEEK:RESPECT FOR TEACHERS

Pray that your child will develop a deep respect and appreciation for his/her teacher and will act respectful of all authority figures.

LIVE IT OUT!THIS WEEK WE LOOK AT: HOPELearn about God’s infinite mercy.

The month of August occurs in what is called Ordinary Time. Ordinary Time lasts approximately 33 weeks of the liturgical year. The word “ordinary” does not mean it is an uninteresting time or less important than other times of the year (such as Lent or Christmas). The word “ordinary” means “to order.” It is during

Ordinary Time we are called to grow in our spiritual life in hope of becoming closer to God. Green is worn during this time to symbolize growth and hope in the salvation promised by Jesus.

Who Are the People of God?

[Peter] became frightened; and, beginning to sink, he cried out, “Lord, save me!” Immediately Jesus

stretched out his hand and caught him.MATTHEW 14:30–31

This is still an unresolved theological issue. For so long the resolute answer of many was: the

Roman Catholic Church is the people of God. However, the Second Vatican Council’s Decree on Ecumenism (Unitatis Redintegratio) opened the Church’s understanding to include all Christian denominations, paraphrasing Ephesians 4:4–5: “There is one body and one Spirit, just as you were called to the one hope of your calling; one Lord, one faith, one Baptism” (UR 2). The council went even further in the Dogmatic Constitution on the Church (Lumen Gentium), “calling together a people made up of Jew and Gentile, making them one, not according to the flesh but in the Spirit. This was to be the new People of God” (LG 9).

To be united with Protestants is one thing; to be united with Jews is quite another. For centuries, many interpreted the New Testament to say that the Jews lost favor with God. Such thinking supported—even caused—various forms of anti-Semitism, ethnic and religious persecution, and killings. We realized how wrong this thinking was. Vatican II quotes

today’s second reading and later states: “This sacred synod wants to foster and recommend...mutual understanding and respect which is the fruit, above all, of biblical and theological studies as well as of fraternal dialogues” (Declaration on the Relationship of the Church to Non-Christian Religions [Nostra Aetate], 4).

We may have corrected some grievous errors in this matter, but we have not gotten much further than Paul did in resolving the issue. However, he experienced “great sorrow and constant anguish in my heart” (Romans 9:2) because of the separation. Do we?

—Sr. Dianne Bergant, CSA

FOR Reflection¬The original followers of Jesus were simply

different kinds of Jews.

¬Much of our Christian religious tradition is grounded in the Old Testament.
