A Message From Our Administrator
This past Thursday I went to Queens to visit a very good friend of mine named Fr. Carlos, a classmate of mine from the seminary. He was going to take me to the religious article store to pick up our new Spanish lectionaries that Fr. James had ordered prior to his departure. As soon as I arrived Fr. Carlos said to me. “We have to eat! I’m dying of hunger!” Like Fr. Carlos I too was hungry and both of us were not as energetic as usual, so before going to the religious article store we ate. After eating my Fr. Carlos said to me, “Ok, now I feel like myself again.” All of us know how important it is to eat on a regular basis. When we don’t eat we lack enery, or initiative. We just don’t feel like ourself. Eating frequently is something we need to do to protect and preserve our earthly life. Oddly enough to protect and preserve our future heavenly life we have to do the same. We must eat and drink on a regular basis. Jesus states very clearly in the Gospel of John, “Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood will have eternal life, and I will raise them up on the last day.” (John 6:54) In the first reading we hear this Sunday we see God providing for the earthly nourishment of the Israelites who were in exile. During the day he sent them manna, a bread like substance and in the evening he sent them meat in the form of quail. When they were hungry, he fed them. When we cry out to our father in hunger he hears us and responds to our needs. God also knows well our spiritual hunger, the hunger we have to know him and love him more so that one day we can enjoy the fullness of His glory for all eternity. He fills this hunger by sending us the bread that comes down from heaven, the Eucharist. This food is the body, blood, soul, and divinity of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. He knows our needs and he responds to them whenever we ask. This heavenly food that comes from heaven strengthens and nouruishes us so that we can always “feel like ourself” someone who is destined for eternal life. The earthly food that we enjoy each day is something that we pay for, it costs money. However, the food that comes from heaven is completely free. We just need to ask for it. We know well that in order to share in this food we need to be present at the banquet which is the holy sacrifice of the Mass. We must enter into the house of the Lord to receive this live saving food. God gives us all that we need to protect our earthly life from the attacks of the devil preserving us for our entrance into heaven. The Eucharist gives us life. We must eat and drink his body and blood on a regular basis to protect and preserve our heavenly health.
