Kuykendall, of Martin, Mich., recently completed U.S. Navy basic training at Recruit Training Command, Great Lakes, Ill. During the eight-week program, Kuykendall com-pleted a variety of training which included classroom study and practical instruction on naval customs, first aid, firefighting, water safety and survival, and shipboard and air-craft safety. An emphasis was also placed on physical fitness. The capstone event of boot camp is "Battle Stations". This exercise gives recruits the skills and confidence they need to succeed in the fleet. "Battle Stations" is designed to galvanize the basic warrior at-tributes of sacrifice, dedication, teamwork and endurance in each recruit through the practical application of basic Navy skills and the core values of Honor, Courage and Com-mitment. Its distinctly ''Navy'' flavor was de-signed to take into account what it means to be a Sailor. Kuykendall is a 2008 graduate of Delton High School of Delton, Mich.

WHAT’S YOUR HURRY?We live in the “instant” generation.

We live in a fast-paced world. We wanteverything NOW. We want instant food… instant information … instantgratification … instant growth … andinstant success. Dr. Wallace Hamilton,a preacher of an earlier generation,called it the “impatient itch for theinstantaneous.”

As one grows and (hopefully)matures, one learns that things thatmatter most take time, patience, hardwork, sacrifice and perseverance. It istold that during his playing days, thegreat basketball player Larry Bird wouldspend many hours alone running lapsand practicing free throws in the BostonGarden.

In the spiritual realm, God is never ina hurry. God is love and “love is patient…” (I Cor. 13:4). There are no shortcutsto Christian maturity. While we arealways looking for the quick answer orimmediate solution, “God’s mills grindslow but sure.” It took the people ofIsrael 40 years to go a distance of onlytwo hundred miles (a ten day journey bycamel caravan) because of theirunbelief (Hebrews 4:6). It took them 40years of training and preparation to getthere.

The cross of Christ was no short cut.They mocked Him saying, “Come downfrom the cross” but He refused to playgames with them. One can buy a flatscreen TV quickly. But things like faith,morality, character and integrity take alifetime to develop.

“Even youths shall faint and beweary, and young men shall fallexhausted; but they who wait uponthe Lord shall renew their strength,they shall mount up with wings likeeagles, they shall run and not beweary, they shall walk and not faint.”– Isaiah 40:30-31

Bill died peacefully Monday,July 30, 2012, in Kalamazoo,surrounded by family. Mr.Brown was born December26, 1922 to Howard andLouise (Noteboom) Brown andwas a lifelong resident of the

area. Bill, who was married to Gladys Ball for 64years, was a farmer, operating his own farm, andalso ran Brown’s Farm Equipment with Gladysfrom the late 50s to early 70s. In his leisure timehe enjoyed golfing, fishing, hunting trips out west,bowling and dancing, especially to polkas. Healso enjoyed his dog, Sparky. His family was veryimportant to him and he most enjoyed spendingtime with his children and grandchildren. He wasa generous man. Preceding him in death were hiswife, Gladys in 2010; a son, Don Brown; agranddaughter, Michelle Brown; two grandsons,Scott Brown and Doug Brown; a brother and asister, Howard Brown and Mildred McGuire.Surviving are two sons and two daughters, Gary(Deidre) Brown of Kalamazoo, Dolores ‘Laurie’(Robert) Augustine of Otsego, Beverly ‘Bev’ (Ken)Jacobs of Parchment and Carl Brown of SouthCarolina; 11 grandchildren and 22 great-grandchildren; a brother, Harry Brown of Hopkins;and a sister, Eleanor Priest, of Hopkins; severalnieces and nephews. Mass of Christian Burialwas held at 11:00 A.M. on Thursday, August 2ndat St. Margaret Catholic Church, Otsego, with Fr.Gordon Greene celebrant. Burial followed at St.Margaret Cemetery. Bill died Monday, July 30, 2012in Hart. Bill was born August 2,1931 in Doster, MI to Ernestand Lois (Sanders) Burd. AnOtsego High School graduate,he had served his country inthe U.S. Air Force during the Korean War and wasa member of the American Legion in Ludington.For over 30 years he was employed with DeHaanHeating & Cooling in Kalamazoo. Upon hisretirement he moved to Hart. In his leisure timehe was an avid fisherman and hunter.
