AUGUST 30, 2015

WELCOME

Westminster Presbyterian Church is a covenant family of believers called by God to fulfill His purposes here in Laurel, and as a staging ground for worldwide kingdom growth where we seek to live out the Gospel of Jesus Christ – to fill the earth with disciples, subdue it redemptively for God’s glory, and worship Him joyfully. We are being redeemed and equipped by the Spirit to build up one another until the Lord returns.

Holy Is the Lord

CALL TO WORSHIP* I will sing of Your steadfast love, O Lord, forever; With my mouth I will proclaim Your faithfulness to all

generations. I declare that Your steadfast love is established forever; Your faithfulness is as firm as the heavens. You said, “I have made a covenant with my chosen one, I have sworn to my servant David: ‘I will establish your descendants forever, and build your throne for all generations.’” Praise the Lord!

PRAISE THE NAME OF JESUS

CORPORATE PROFESSION OF OUR FAITH* The Apostle’s Creed

I believe in God the Father Almighty;

Maker of Heaven and Earth And in Jesus Christ, His only Son, Our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried; He descended into hell. The third day He rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven, and sitteth at the right hand of God the Father Almighty. From thence He shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Ghost, the holy catholic church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.

CORPORATE AND RESPONSIVE CONFESSION OF SIN

Covenant Lord, we confess to You and to one another that time after time we have entered Your presence with selfish intentions and with hearts that have been closed to Your grace. We have lifted our voices to You in praise, but our feet have still walked in the ways of this world. We have rehearsed Your commandments but have refused to see Your face in the needs of our neighbor. We pray, Lord, that You forgive our lack of faith and pardon our acts of injustice. Grant us the healing that comes from Your presence and the cleansing of Your all-powerful Word, through Jesus Christ, our Lord. Amen.

(Hear now our silent and individual prayers of confession)

ASSURANCE OF PARDON AND THE LORD’S PRAYER

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name. Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our debts as we forgive our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For Thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever. AMEN.

SERMON NOTES

Monday/Tuesday Psalm 132 is by far the longest Psalm of Ascent. What do you think is the purpose of its length? In the opening verses David is described as “not sleeping.” What is keeping David awake? David’s fervor is for the proper worship of God. How does your own passion for worship compare to that of David’s? What is the biggest hindrance to you having more passion in worship? What is a “passion thief” in your life that hinders your worship? The first point in Sunday’s sermon was “Our good intentions are not always God’s will.” What was the central thought with that point? How might our good intentions not be God’s best? Pray that God might show you areas in which your intentions and His will might better line up together.

Wednesday/Thursday The second sermon point was, “God’s intentions will always be for our good.” How did God correct David’s good intentions? How did God use Nathan in David’s life? Do you have a “Nathan?” Take some time and think about those things that might be good, but may not be God’s best for you. How might your strengths be a crippling weakness towards someone else?

Friday/Saturday “All of God’s intentions are ‘yes’ and ‘amen’ in the Gospel.” How is this true based on the covenant God made with David? How many years did an earthly man sit on David’s throne after this covenant? What was the setting in which these pilgrim singers were singing this Psalm? If there was no Davidic king on the throne and much of Israel was in exile did God lie to David? How do we reconcile this apparent conundrum? The New Testament answers these two theological crises for us. How so? Take some time and find scriptures that describe the future of God’s people (hint - Isaiah, Jeremiah, Ezekiel, Romans 8, Hebrews, Revelation). Pray that God would encourage you with the hope of an everlasting Kingdom and the everlasting reign of the King of that Kingdom. How does that affect you in how you live now?
