A: The Vilna Gaon (1720-1797) writes that the reason for this prohibition comes from the Gemara Baba Batra page 60b. The Gemara quotes an opinion which states that after the destruction of the Beit HaMikdash it would be appropriate to ban eating meat and drinking wine the entire year. This would enable us to properly mourn the loss of the sacrificial offerings and wine libations that ceased with the destruction of the Beit HaMikdash. However, the Rabbis recognized that most of the people wouldn’t be able to abide by this ban, and therefore never instituted it. The Vilna Gaon explains that although we wouldn’t be able to abide by it for the entire year, the Rabbis felt that it would be possible for us to refrain from meat and wine for a short period of time preceding Tisha B’Av ( Biur HaGra OC 551:9). Therefore, we don’t eat meat and drink wine during the “Nine Days” (See Arukh HaShulkhan 551:23 for an alternative reason). DAF YOMI SPONSORSHIPS We offer our members the opportunity to sponsor a week of Daf

Yomi learning for $225 - a wonderful way to commemorate a Yahrzeit, celebrate a Simcha, or support Torah learning in our Shul.

To sponsor please call or email the Shul office. This week is sponsored by:

• Barry Novack & Dr. Anna Baum In memory of Barry’s mother, Shaindel bat Menachem, Z”L

KIDDUSH CO-SPONSORSHIP PROGRAM Kiddush co-sponsorships at $200 each help our Shul cover the expense of those Shabbatot without a main sponsor and are a nice way to commemorate or celebrate an occasion.

We encourage you to consider this option. This week our program is supported by: • Jeff Astrof & Shawni Modrell-Astrof

in gratitude to Dr. Charlie Frankel

THANK YOU & FAREWELL We thank our Youth Director, Dr. Jonathan Ravanshenas,

for all his work in giving us a wonderful Youth Program over the past three years. We wish our very dear Jonny success

in all his future endeavors. A letter from Jonny to our membership is included in this bulletin.

Dear Members and Friends,

Recently several members have suggested that our Shul create a Yizkor Book of Remembrance. This will offer our members the opportunity to memorialize their loved ones

who have passed away by listing their names in our Yizkor Book. The book will also include the Yizkor Tefilot and El Male memorial prayers which our Shul customarily recites, and will be used in our Minyanim on Yom Kippur, Shemini Atzeret, Acharon Shel Pesach and Shavuot. Please visit https://www.yicc.org/yizkorbook5780 and complete the online form listing all the names you wish to memorialize with a gift of $25.00 per name. Alternatively, you can complete the form below and mail it back with a check payable to Young Israel of Century City by August 19, 2019, allowing us enough time to print the books for Yom Kippur. May the memory of your loved ones be a source of blessing for you and your family. If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to e-mail me: [email protected] or call the Shul office (310) 273-6954. Thank you, Elisa Schoenfeld, Chair, Yizkor Book of Remembrance

Dr. Yosy Schames, Mark Schiff and Rita Wizenfeld, Co-Chairs, Yizkor Book of Remembrance

TREE OF LIFE YICC’s Tree of Life is located on the 2nd fl near our Youth Rooms. One way to commemorate a Simcha is to dedicate a leaf engraved with the date and Simcha on our Shul’s Tree of Life. Whether it be a Birth, Bar/Bat-

Mitzvah, Wedding or Anniversary, our Shul’s Tree of Life is the perfect way to permanently celebrate your Simcha.

Many of our members have leaves on our Tree that were dedicated in their honor. It would be so nice to dedicate new leaves to honor new celebrations: marriages, Bar/Bat Mitzvahs, babies…!

Our latest leaf has been dedicated by Shelly Rothschild & Yosef Yekutiel In honor of their grandson, Ezra Bentzion Gindi, born in Jerusalem on May 26, 2019

to Samantha & Yacov Gindi shortly after they made Aliyah!

The cost of a Leaf is $180. For more information

please contact the Shul Office at
