HALAKHIC CORNER

Q: What is the reason we refrain from eating meat and drinking wine during the “Nine Days”?

A: The Vilna Gaon (1720-1797) writes that the reason for this prohibition comes from the Gemara Baba Batra page 60b. The Gemara quotes an opinion which states that after the destruction of the Beit HaMikdash it would be appropriate to ban eating meat and drinking wine the entire year. This would enable us to properly mourn the loss of the sacrificial offerings and wine libations that ceased with the destruction of the Beit HaMikdash. However, the Rabbis recognized that most of the people wouldn’t be able to abide by this ban, and therefore never instituted it. The Vilna Gaon explains that although we wouldn’t be able to abide by it for the entire year, the Rabbis felt that it would be possible for us to refrain from meat and wine for a short period of time preceding Tisha B’Av (Biur HaGra OC 551:9). Therefore, we don’t eat meat and drink wine during the “Nine Days” (See Arukh HaShulkhan 551:23 for an alternative reason).
