In “totality”! This past Monday, the buzz word was “totality. I had to laugh at how many times I heard that word as the nation prepared to view the Great American Eclipse of 2017. Even though we here in Pittsburgh did not get to experience the totality of the solar eclipse, we totally

had fun watching it from the office grounds. Our local Cub Scout pack 326 came together to experience the wonderful spectacle of nature. As I stood there with the office staff looking up, with the required glasses of course, thanks to the scouts, I couldn't help but to think of all of the people of every race and background looking up to stare at the sky together. It is a reminder to me of just how small we really are in the whole scheme of God’s creation and my tiny place in the vast universe. It was a great opportunity to look up to the SUN with people from all over the country full of excitement and wonder. I started to reflect a little about what it might be like when Jesus returns as he promised. I remembered Jesus saying in the Gospel of Luke, “There will be signs in the sun, the moon, and the stars, and on earth nations will be in dismay, perplexed by the roaring of the sea and the waves. People will die of fright in anticipation of what is coming upon the world, for the powers of the heavens will be shaken. And then they will see the Son of Man coming in a cloud with power and great glory. But when these signs begin to happen, stand erect and raise your heads because your redemption is at hand.” Luke 21: 25-28 I couldn't help notice how people were getting emotional about what they were seeing or experiencing as if it were a spiritual event happening. Maybe for some it was. Imagine the excitement and wonder there could be all the time if people across the nation and throughout the world united in the same way to look up to the SON, Jesus Christ the Light of the World, “IN TOTALITY!”

Don’t shine so that others can see you. Shine so that, through you others can see him!

Getting to Know – John Ferguson You might have noticed a tall, good-looking young man around Holy Apostles Parish this summer. It was none other than seminarian, John Ferguson. I caught up with him for an interview before he left. John was born and raised in Butler, is 21 years old and has two brothers and a sister. He attended Butler Catholic (K-8) and St. Joseph High School in Natrona Heights. He en-joys playing basketball, tennis, and volleyball, spending time at Deep Creek Lake in Maryland, sitting around a bon-fire conversing with friends. He especially loves praying with others. John’s interest in the priesthood began during childhood. He “played Mass” in 5th and 6th grade and received the gift of a Roman Missal from a priest friend, which he treasures to this day. In 8th grade, he thought about the priesthood, but pushed the thoughts aside. During his senior year, he lost his uncle and grandmother. In his grief, he felt that “God’s grace flowed.” A priest approached John and said that God was picking him for a certain purpose. Again, he thought “priesthood,” but once more pushed the thought aside. It was after graduating from high school that he truly heard the Lord’s calling and entered St. Paul Seminary. After three years of study, he will earn a bachelor degree in philosophy. The bishop will then assign John to a Major Seminary to study theology for four years, followed by a pastoral year. As a priest, he looks forward to bringing “the love of Christ” to all, distributing the sacraments, “becoming the best priest God is calling me to be” and bringing “souls closer to Jesus and Jesus to others.” He would advise some-one considering the priesthood to focus on “building a rela-tionship with God” and to “not be afraid of where the Lord is leading you.” Asked about his opinion of Holy Apostles Parish commu-nity, John responded, “The community is on fire with the Holy Spirit and I have been honored and privileged to wit-ness it. The Festival of Praise is something that not only brings this community together but the whole Church. I love the people here and I thank them for being a com-munity of faith rich in God's merciful and loving em-brace. May God bless always, everywhere and in every-thing.” Our best wishes to John as he continues his jour-ney.

Nar-Anon Meetings Continue Our local Nar-Anon meetings continue on Mondays, at 6:30 pm, in the St. Albert the Great chapel. This is at 3198 Schieck Street, in Baldwin (just off Glass Run Road). Ad-diction is a family disease. It affects the relationships of those close to the addict: parents, spouses, siblings, children, longtime friends, and employers. If someone’s addiction is affecting you, first you must help yourself. Nar-Anon is a twelve step support group for families and friends of ad-dicts. There are no dues or fees to join. Just come to a meet-ing. You will hear others, who are going through similar problems, talk about how they cope and find recovery. To locate a meeting in other areas, go to our website at www.nar-anon.org or call (Mike B. at 412-884-7744 X 206).

R.C.I.A The Rite of Christian Initiation

Have you considered becoming a member of the Catholic faith? Or maybe you know someone who has expressed an interest in becoming Catholic, a disciple of Christ? It is near the time we typically begin R.C.I.A to prepare those inter-ested to receive the Sacraments at Easter Vigil. If you feel drawn to the church and would like to attend, contact Deacon Mike at 412-884-7744 X 206, or by way of email at [email protected].

The Cost of Discipleship – In the mystery of the Transfigura-tion Jesus reveals to his disci-ples that he is the Son of God and that he will come again in glory at the end of the age. Yet, this magnificent sight oc-curs only after Jesus tells his followers that they must take

up their crosses in order to follow him. Jesus wants us to share in his glory, while at the same time encourages us to be prepared for the challenges that arise along the way.

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, Grace, love, and joy to you in Christ Jesus! It is with great joy that I take this opportunity to begin a regular column in the bulletin! Thanks to Fr. Steve’s encouragement and support, I will be mak-ing this a habit. Whether it is a good habit or a bad one, you will have to be the judge. This column is primarily for the glory of God and the salvation of souls, and it will entail all kinds of interesting sto-ries from life as well as various spiritual insights that the Lord has shared with me over my short life so far. If you ever want me to share something spe-cific or to address a particular question you might have, please feel free to email me. Know that it is a joy for me to be a part of this parish family, and I am looking forward to sharing more of myself with you through this column. May our Lord and King, Jesus Christ, be your strength, encouragement, and joy always! In Christ, Fr. Levi Hartle

For peace in our land, especially in the wake of the violence in Charlottesville, Virginia, that divisions will be healed, hatred will cease and that all people will respect each other as beloved children of God in whose image and likeness we are created. Let us pray.
