Our standards in society are different from God’s standards. We often rank people by what

they have, how powerful they are, or how successful they are. Jesus reminds us that God

will not judge us by the same earthly standards. When God asks you, “what have you done

with the gifts I have given you?” How will you respond?

“For behold, some are last who will be first and some are first who will be last.”

(Luke 13:30)

STEWARDSHIP REFLECTIONS

RCIA (Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults) is a process for adults who wish to be baptized Catholic. This is for those who are baptized in a Christian tradition or who are not baptized at all. This is also for Catholics over 18 who have not received Communion and/or Confirmation. The RCIA meets on Sunday mornings. If you know of anyone who may be interested, please encourage them to call Sr. Joanne at 201- 387-0080 or e-mail her at [email protected]. We will be delighted to talk with them and to assist them in any way.

Dear Friends, How do you get to Carnegie Hall? Practice! Practice! Practice! Wishing does not make us a great musician! What does that have to do with Sunday’s Gospel? How do you follow Christ? Practice! Practice! Practice! Jesus is teaching on his way to Jerusalem, where he eventually will be crucified. He advises, “Enter through the narrow gate.” (Luke 18:24) He says this in response to someone who asks who can be saved. The question is more about what ethnic group (s) (Jews or Gentiles) are favored by God. The Jews at Jesus’ time felt they were superior to other nations. They believed in one God. They had a cove-nant with God passed down from Abraham, Moses, and David. They had the Ten Commandments and 613 laws handed down from Moses. The Gentiles (non-Jews) believed in several gods and engaged in rituals which were idolatrous. Yet Jesus is cautioning his listeners not to be arrogant. God loves all peoples. He wants freedom and salvation for the inhabitants of every nation. “Enter into the narrow gate” means to live in faith day after day. Sometimes people obey the external rules, laws, rituals, and prayers, but their hearts are not in them. They feel justified because they fulfilled all the pre-cepts of the law, but have no genuine love for God and neighbor. They did their duty. We can fall into this trap ourselves. We pray. We go to Mass. We contribute to the parish. How do we react crossing the little bridge in Haworth and your car and another meet in the middle? Who backs up? Who has kind-ness and patience? We need to nurture love, compassion, and forgiveness for ourselves and others, especially for those who are different from us. If you read Matthew 25: 31-46, Jesus talks about the last judgement. “Come, blessed by my Father. Inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world. Jesus proclaims when you feed the hungry, clothe the naked, visit the sick and imprisoned, welcome the stranger (? immigrant, migrant), and clothe the naked, you did it for Me.” (Mt. 25: 34-40) Jesus gives us the criteria. He advises against hypocrisy. This is why the clergy sex abuse scandal is so upsetting. Outwardly, the rules were followed, but behind closed doors, great harm was done. Bishops protected the abusers, too. People feel betrayed. Jesus teaches us that we must love one another. (Jn. 15:12) That is the foundation of being a disciple. Disci-pleship involves prayer, worship, community, and service. It also takes humility. Faith is a gift. So is the Holy Spir-it. Jesus belongs to everyone. It is a challenge to be a Christian in a world that is so divided by hatred, discrimina-tion, and social injustice. However, all of us here at Sacred Heart and believers throughout the world are signs of hope. We struggle to live as Christ would in a hostile, materialistic, power-hungry world. We are counter-cultural. We need each other’s prayer and support. We need Eucharist and reconciliation and Anointing of the Sick. We are living out our baptism promises. Some days are easier than others. I am so grateful for all of you, as we jour-ney together. We are truly a parish family, witnessing to the Gospel. Let us walk with each other through the narrow gate. Peace,

BIG NEWS! We will be adding a new program this year in our parish. It is called SAREH for "Sunday Alternative for Religious Education at Home". I did it for two years in my last parish and both parents and children enjoyed the process. I recently explained it to all of our parents in an e-mail and now have over 15 families interested. This is how it works: Parents and children will meet with me for a half hour in Church, following the 10:00 a.m. Mass EVERY OTHER week from Sept. to the end of April. The text book we are using is "spiral", meaning that the same concepts are taught to each grade for each chapter but at a deeper level and with a different emphasis each year. Because of this, I can teach everyone the basic theology for two lessons each time we meet BUT the parents must go through and discuss the pages with their children at home, see that they complete and understand the work and bring it back the next session together in Church! We will continue to have our regular program on Tuesday afternoons and evenings AND again, if interested, we could use your help as a catechist or aide. Please pray for all of our parents, catechists and children. Thank you and God bless you. Sr. Regina, C.S.JB.
