On behalf of the organizing and program committees, we are delighted to welcoming you to wonderful Copenhagen,
Denmark and say ‘Hej’ for the 17th International Conference on Human-
Computer Interaction with Mobile Devices and Services – MobileHCI 2015. This year’s
conference continues the successful conference series – the premier forum and world’s leading
conference for innovations in mobile, portable and personal devices and with the services to which they enable access. MobileHCI brings together people from diverse areas to provide a multidisciplinary forum for academics, hardware and software developers, designers and practitioners to discuss the challenges and potential solutions for effective interaction with and through mobile devices, applications, and services. The research community has an ever increasing interest and commitment to the filed with 234 complete paper submissions (of variable length – new for 2015). In addition, we received 15 demonstration submissions, 46 poster submissions, 9 industry case study submissions, 9 doctoral consortium submissions, and 8 workshop submissions. This represents a growth of 11% in paper submissions compared to MobileHCI 2014, with the other categories remaining at similar levels as in 2014.Our 42-member international program committee completed a high-quality peer review process, which reached broadly into the research community: over 460 external reviewers provided additional expertise to help make decisions. As in previous years, the program committee met in person in a cross-Atlantic split committee meeting (Copenhagen, Denmark and Redmond, USA); both meetings were held synchronously and were linked via audio and video connections. These meetings provided the opportunity to discuss papers based on expert reviews to reach a final consensus. As a result of this review process, the committee accepted 64 papers (which amounts to an acceptance rate of 27.4%) for inclusion into the final program. As we introduced variable paper length for submissions similar to other top venues (e.g., ACM UIST), there is no clear distinction between full and short papers, resulting in an average paper length of 8.8 pages. While we make no distinction between papers in the program, proceedings or digital library, papers of 6 or fewer pages will have shorter presentation times than longer papers at the conference. The main topics (clustered in respective sessions) of year’s proceedings feature attention, maps, navigation, health, cross-device interaction, gestures, collaboration, authentication, applications, methodologies, touch input, and input technologies.
MobileHCI 2015MobileHCI 2015 3
During the committee meeting, the program committee selected papers for both Honorable Mention Awards and Best Paper Awards among the 64 accepted submissions. Ultimately, the program chairs awarded 9 Honorable Mention Awards and 2 Best Paper Awards. These awards represent a special recognition of excellence, and the selected papers truly are exceptional. In addition to our 64 papers, it is our pleasure to introduce the remainder of the program. This includes: 8 excellent workshops with topics in the areas of design for the elderly, mobile vs. wearable, cognition and attention, self-reflection, and collaboration; 4 tutorials focusing on user experience, persuasion and health, visualization, and patents; 30 posters and 15 demonstrations (some of which are accompanying paper presentations), 8 doctoral consortium papers, and 3 industrial case studies. To round off our very exciting program, we have two excellent and outstanding keynote speakers: Sriram Subramanian, a pioneer in the design and development of shape-changing interfaces, and Andy Wilson, a leading expert in sensing technologies for natural interactions. Each of them will shed new light on and share their insights regarding the future of mobile devices and mobile interaction.Organizing a conference such as MobileHCI relies on the efforts of a large group of people, which are willing to help and offering their time over an extended period of time. We would like to thank deeply all our volunteers, the excellent external reviewers, the program committee, as well as all the chairs in the organizing committee for their tireless efforts over the past year. Without all the hard work of everyone involved, we would not have succeeded in organizing MobileHCI this year. We further would like to thank all of our supporters, sponsors and donors for financial and logistical support and the ACM without which we could not have been able to put this event together. We are proud of the work of the vibrant MobileHCI research community that these proceedings represent. And finally: We hope you enjoy all the aspects of the MobileHCI 2015 program, and that you get to enjoy your time during your stay in wonderful Copenhagen, Denmark.

One of the visions on my research is to deliver visual and tactile experiences to users without
instrumenting them with wearable or head-mounted displays. My team has been exploring various technical solutions to create displays that use air as the diffuser surface to project visual content and in using air pressure to create tactile feedback. For example, we generate fog-filled bubbles that can be tracked and projected on to provide ambient notifications. Similarly, we create a curtain of mist to act as a reach-through personal space between the user and an interactive tabletop. In this talk, I will present some of our recent projects on this topic and conclude with UltraHaptics. Ultrahaptics is our haptic feedback system that uses acoustic radiation forces to create tactile stimulations in multiple locations of the hand. This feedback is created in mid-air — so users don’t have to touch or hold any device to experience it. I will also touch on Ultrahaptics journey from a research project to a spin–out and how this has been facilitated by funding for blue-sky research.

For the last several years we have explored ways to use depth sensing cameras in combination with projectors to create a variety of augmented and mixed realities. While large scale projection mapping installations are by now familiar to most, the unique capabilities of depth cameras and today’s GPUs can be used to solve the projection mapping problem at video rate, thus enabling truly interactive systems. A progression of projected augmented reality prototypes will be presented, beginning with early pre-Kinect experiments and culminating in Illumiroom and RoomAlive. In this talk, i will also discuss some interesting diversions we have taken along the way, such as considering physics simulation as an organizing principle for interaction, and releasing the open source RoomAlive Toolkit.https://github.com/Kinect/RoomAliveToolkit/

Personal health monitoring is a hot topic. With bracelets and dongles, we keep track of our heart rate, exercising, sleep, and more. We have become our own doctors and coaches. Improving citizens’ health brings the society significant savings and more efficient services, besides healthier citizens. Health data also has important value beyond healthcare, e.g. in insurance and advertising. Smart phones and associated cloud services are the key platform for personal health monitoring. Apps and services for this purpose proliferate. Can we trust their automated analysis functions? Risks inevitably rise. Misplaced sensitive data can be embarrassing, costly and dangerous. Data mining may uncover identifiable information from seemingly anonymous data. Questions of system architectures, security approaches and data ownership arise. How to extract maximal benefits from health data with minimal risks? Field experiments are underway - in your pockets.
