21st Sunday of Ordinary Time “Or who has given the Lord anything that he may be
repaid?” (Romans 11:35) St. Paul reminds us of a central fact of
stewardship. We cannot give the Lord anything - God already
owns it all. God made everything. All we can do is return a portion
of God’s many gifts back to Him. Sincere gratitude for our gifts
opens our hearts to joyful generosity! Through your generous
sharing, you just may be the answer to someone’s prayer.
Reflection from Fr. Hartford
Peter makes his great confession of faith about
Jesus in the Gospel this weekend and is promised
the keys to the kingdom of heaven. Peter declares,
“You are the Christ, the Son of the living God. “The
occasion for this was Jesus asking the disciples
what people were saying about him. He asks what
people’s opinions were concerning his identity.
Some said John the Baptist, as Herod Antipas
thought, was restored to life in Jesus. Others
thought Elijah because he was expected to come at
the end times with the coming of God’s kingdom.
Still others said Jeremiah or one of the prophets
because of his similarity to them. After this Jesus
asks the disciples what they think.
Peter, being the spokesperson of the group,
makes his great confession of faith that Jesus is
the Messiah. The Hebrew word Messiah means
“anointed one” and its Greek translation is Chris-
tos. This shows their great hope that Jesus is the
one who has come to deliver Israel from all its ene-
mies and establish God’s kingdom here on earth.
The phrase “Son of the living God” corrects any
false notions about the title Messiah.
Jesus declares that Peter’s confession is a reve-
lation from God the Father on which, Peter as the
rock, and the church will be built after his death
and resurrection. Peter is promised the keys to the
kingdom, a supreme authority, for the benefit of
the church. Because the church is to last until the
end of time, this authority has been passed on to
Peter’s successors all the way down to our current
Pope: Pope Francis. The first Vatican council de-
fined the doctrine of the primacy of peter and his
successors and will hold true until Jesus comes to
us again.

Encounter has gone "Virtual"!

distancing, Worldwide Marriage Encounter is sponsoring a virtual
marriage experience called Restore – Rekindle – Renew. This
Enrichment Experience will meet via Zoom for seven sessions on
Monday evenings September 14 to October 26 from 7-9:30 PM.
Couples will explore their individual personality styles, improve
listening and communication skills, understand God’s plan for their
marriage, and learn how to keep their relationship a
priority. Registration is limited and a $100 application fee is required.
For more information or to apply, call Stephen & Michelle O'Leary at
800-710-9963 or visit them at https://wwmema.org/.
Remember our commitments to Partner’s in
Charity. The need is greatest in times of
struggle. Please consider pledging the same
amount you pledged last year or greater. This
would provide stability to all our diocese
programs.
