Women in Ophthalmology (WIO) was founded to enhance and improve the

professional environment for women ophthalmologists. WIO encourages

diversity, impartiality, economic parity, and strives to cultivate new

opportunities for leadership, education and public service in the field of

ophthalmology for ourselves and future generations.

What started as a lunch meeting at the American Academy of

Ophthalmology (AAO) has grown to an internationally recognized

organization, an affiliate society of the AAO, which provides scientific/

medical education and professional development resources for women

in ophthalmology. WIO recognizes the many facets to being a female

ophthalmologist and provides training, services and benefits to meet all of

those needs.

Wanda Martinez, MD Chair, 2020 WIO Summer Symposium

I hope this note finds you well, cozying up with a cool (or warm) drink in front of the screen ready to enjoy a little flavor of WIO. There is no point in denying we all wish we were together, perhaps sharing stories under an umbrella serenaded by the ocean. But 2020 has turned out to be a different kind of year.

Instead of “focus” and “vision”, fitting catchy words chosen for our meeting early on, we have faced “challenges”, “frustration”, “uncertainty”, “risk” and “exhaustion”. But we rise up, pivot when we need to and rely on each other. We care (for the sick, for our families, for our people), we speak out (for inequality), we stand our ground (for medical truths), and we support each other.

The word now is “community”. We are stronger, braver and better when we are together. Let this be the time when we celebrate each other. Let the symposium be an oasis for us to connect, share, learn, encourage and strengthen our bonds.

Thank you for the encouragement of the WIO board, CEO, and especially the president Erin Shriver for keeping the WIO vision. Thank you to all the speakers and sponsors for their support. My heartfelt thanks to the symposium committee; no better group could have tackled the challenges of planning a meeting in this environment. And a million thanks to the executive team, especially Amber Mendez, for her unwavering efforts to making this an amazing meeting.

The WIO first virtual symposium is full of diverse CME talks, from scientific innovation, to timely personal and professional development, to inspiration keynote addresses. There are interactive top posters and communication sessions to keep us connected. A one-of-a-kind year-long clinical trials session debuts at the symposium. The Live Well sessions and evening receptions should allow for some relaxing together time. Keep an eye for a unique take on our traditional group picture. Hope you enjoy!

WIO Virtual 2020 Summer Symposium – Strength in Community.

Much love,

Wanda Martinez
