Intern Highlight: AssessingCOVID19 Risks Among HBCUstudents in the Deep South

Since December 2020, there has beenboth excitement and concerns aboutthe rollout and safety of the COVID-19vaccine. Early in the vaccine rollout, the demand for the vaccineoutweighed the available vaccinesupply across the US. However, among certain populations, particularlyminority, rural communities and deepsouth states, this excitement has hasbeen imperiled to myths and hesitancyregarding the COVID-19 vaccines.

Throughout the US, COVID-19infection rates are rising among theunvaccinated population. The largestincrease in the infection rates is in theDeep South. Early in the COVID-19vaccine rollout, the Spring 2021 healthequity interns, and the general studentbody at three historical Black colleges(HBCU) in the deep south received anassessment of the knowledge, attitudeand behavior regarding COVID19 andthe vaccine. Notably, 71% of ASPHNhealth equity interns compared to23.1% of Deep South HBCU studentsreported they have already received orintended to receive the coronavirusvaccine. These finding suggest moreefforts are needed to address vaccinehesitancy in the Deep South.

ASPHN Health Internship programseeks to provide opportunities forstudents to explore barriers anddevelop solutions to improve healthoutcomes for all communities.
