Your Journey of Faith Should Not Be Alone

LIFE (Living in Faith Everyday)

Quote from LIFE leader Steve May “Do you meet with a group of friends on a regular basis? Do you belong to a bridge club, quilting club, bowling league, golf regularly or meet to drink coffee with the same friends? We need these connections with others! Do you find yourself becoming involved with their successes and struggles? Do you share yours with them? LIFE groups at our church offer these relationships on a different level, one that will help you to become more Christ Centered. John 13: 34-35 says, “A new command I give you: Love one another. By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.” As you concentrate on the concerns of others you discover how your life with God becomes stronger. As your life with Him improves then those around you can see His light shining thru you. We all have our weaknesses, as well as our strengths and sharing those with others in a LIFE group brings you closer to living out the Great Commandments, Matthew 22: 37-40 “Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it: Love your neighbor as yourself”. We need one another. God made us to be his representative to lift up, to challenge and to care for one another.” “participating in a group that asks you weekly how you are doing in your relationship with God is one of the most effective ways you can plan to stay focused on your growth as a follower of Jesus Christ.” Dr. Kevin M. Watson “The Class Meeting”

Participating in these LIFE groups will help you become more aware of your relationship with God by

watching over one another in love and supporting one another in living out their faith every day.

Three simple questions are asked of the group members: How is your life with God?

How are you living out your faith in Christ? How are you experiencing God and the Holy Spirit at work in your life?

When groups meet together and share their experiences with God, there is a profound presence of the Holy Spirit which draws us closer to Jesus. It is in their gathering together, challenging each other, praying for one another, and sacrificing for the group that God continues to build them up. We are made for connection. God who loves us perfectly without hesitation or condition created us. We were created to receive love from God and others and to respond by loving God and others. The importance of connection with God and others is seen as Jesus prayed for us to be brought into community of faith in Father, Son and Holy Spirit: “may all be one. As you, Father, are in me and I am in you.” (John 17:21)

Opportunities abound in today’s technical society for different avenues to donate. First, there is the traditional method of placing money/check in the offering plate. This provides a moment to teach the younger generation about giving. Our children watch what we do and hopefully learn what God would want us to do. Second, most financial institutions have programs for online bill pay service. Did you know that the

donations received by mail and members using bill pay are a substantial amount of the monthly gifts received by the church? It’s fast, convenient and simple to complete the automated process. Neither of the first two options cost donors or the recipients fees. Third, First United Methodist Church has a PayPal account with links on the church web site. Currently, there are three buttons in which individuals can use to donate: 1) regular tithe, 2) Project Glory, and 3) memorials to the Memorial Fund. However, PayPal does charge a fee, even though it is minimal. A fourth option is to give stock to First United Methodist Church. Once the stock is received and sold, then your gift goes to the church. Members often choose to do this in December, but please contact the church office if this is something you are thinking about and we can make it happen at any time. Lastly, if your age and circumstances allow, you could use your required minimum IRA distribution as a gift to the church. Please contact your financial advisor and the church office if this is an option you wish to consider. There may be tax benefits for you in completing this option. Whichever method you choose, please be sure to notate in the space allowed, what you are intending your gift to go towards. As always, thank you for your gifts of service and donations to assist in God’s ministry at First United Methodist Church, Bryan. If you have any questions, please contact Eileen Winkle, Director of Business & Facility Operations at 979-779-1324 ext. 109 or [email protected].

Music Ministries CHILDREN’S CHOIRS BEGIN SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 8 Our children’s choirs will resume on Sunday, September 8th at 5:00 pm! We have new songs, new games, and new instruments that we will be learning about this year. We will also learn about worship and the symbols we use in worship as well as scripture, prayer, and so much more. Children’s Choirs are for kids 4 years old through the 6

th grade. Hope you will join us!

SANCTUARY CHOIR RESUMES AUGUST 7 After a summer hiatus from rehearsal in the month of July, the Sanctuary Choir will begin the Fall season on Wednesday, August 7th at 7:00 pm in the choir loft of the Sanctuary. We welcome you to come join us! Want to sing just for Christmas? You can do that as well. We will begin preparing for the Christmas very soon. Watch for that information in the near future!!

COME JOIN IN THE SONG: Why We Sing? - From the beginning of time, the people of God have gathered before Him in song! Music is our imaginative expression in praise, celebration, lament, longing, and sorrow. There is beauty in a multitude of voices combining in unified glory to God. There is also mystery in why this simple act of worship is so profound. There are a few dynamics of singing in worship that are important to note: Singing Fuels Our Love for God - Proclaiming and affirming our faith through song stirs our hearts and nurtures our affections. Singing is the loving response of creation to who God is and what God has done.

Singing Shapes and Teaches Us - Songs of worship are able to capture theological ideas and spiritual mysteries. Singing continually shapes our faith and reminds us of the gospel. Most importantly, music in worship.

Singing Comes from the Body, Mind, and Soul - Music carries emotional power because it comes to us through our bodies, utilizes our minds, and invokes our will. When we sing, we use our voices to express our faith and delight in the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.

Singing Brings Unity to the Church - Music is a natural act that brings the church together in one voice. Congregational song has a powerful way of allowing each individual voice to contribute to a singular, unified sound. When the church sings a song of celebration, there is a collective sense of hope and victory. The act of singing is a glorious example of the church operating as the body of Christ.

Singing is a Means of Grace - Colossians 3:16 acknowledges music as an important channel the Spirit uses to build up and nourish the people of God. Singing not only focuses our attentions upon God but also reminds us of His attitude of grace toward us. By singing scriptural and theological truth, we are able to both express and receive the grace of God.

Come join the Sanctuary Choir and be a part of leading the church’s song that gives back to God all the Praise, Honor, and Glory that He deserves! It’s a great time to join us. Give me a call and let’s talk!

“SHOVELS, PAINTBRUSHES AND HAPPENSTANCE”

A Study of How Archeology Has Proven God’s Word

Leader: Fred H. Hoskins PhD, ThD

Adult Bible study on Wednesday evenings at 6:30 p.m. will resume in the Fall when First Family Dinner begins on September 4

th at

5:30 p.m. in the Heritage Room. This fall, Pastor Rick will team up with one of our newest members, Dr. Fred Hoskins to present a survey of archeological confirmations proving Scripture to be true. Dr. Hoskins offers the following synopsis of the class lectures: “The authenticity of the Bible has been under attack by minimalists for most of its existence. While there are many things in the Bible that have not yet been substantiated, there has never been an archeological find that has disproved any event or person mentioned in the scriptures. This study will look at the most significant Biblical archeological discoveries of the past two centuries and how they have authenticated specific Biblical places, persons and events.”

The class will be reading Mount Sinai in Saudi Arabia written by Joel Richardson. Pastor Rick will lead a discussion of this book for 15 minutes of the class session. This text presents the modern case for the discovery of the real Mt. Sinai (yes, the one of the burning bush, Moses and the 10 commandments) in Saudi Arabia.

Please sign up now so that the book can be ordered for you so you can start reading before class begins. The class will meet every Wednesday from September 4

th through November 20

th. This bible study will be packed

with incredible discovery of truth confirming the inspiration and authority of Scripture and is open to all adults. Please call the church office to sign up!
