It has been a year now for me at the Church of Our Lady of Nazareth, Bhayandar, and many events have taken place. We have had additions to our

parish family by way of baptisms. A number of children received Jesus for the First time. Youth have confirmed their decision to follow Jesus. Couples have joined in Holy Matrimony. We remember with sorrow those who have left us for the heavenly abode

Following the second encyclical of Pope Francis calling us to care for the environment, children as well as adults are more careful now than before. The lights and fans are switched off when not needed. The Playground is kept clean. Plastic is not thrown about the place. Trees will be planted by the students of our school. This lead to a cleaner and greener Bhayandar.

The S.C.C.s will be divided into clusters. This helps the animators to reach out to every person in the parish. The Neighborhood Youth Groups (N.Y.G) are also being formed in the communities. I can say, with confidence that we are moving towards a more participative church. This is also an attempt to reach those on the periphery of our parish.

This year the level of the playground has been raised. It is nice to see children playing in the rains. This reminds me my childhood days. For the comfort of our parishioners we have purchased 5000 chairs. All this has been made possible by the generous contributions of you my dear people.

As I welcome Fr. Hendrick Itur and Fr. Joseph Mathew on our team I would like to place on record, in appreciation, the services rendered by Fr. Anthony Banz. He was actively involved in various cells, associations and Small Christian Communities of our parish. Thank you Fr. Anthony, may God be with you as you serve the people at Our Lady of Fatima Church, Majiwada. I am also glad to note that three young boys from our parish have joined the seminary to become priests and 3 young girls have joined the convent to become nuns. They need our prayers.

On behalf of the parish Team I wish you all a very Happy Feast of Our Lady of Nativity. May God bless you all.

Sometimes when a mother and daughter are together, I wonder whether they are really mother and daughter or are they sisters! When I ask about their

relationship, the mother with a victorious smile says, “She is my younger daughter,” which means that she has another older daughter. There are men too, who look much younger than their age. When I've asked them about the secret to looking young, most women said that they are content in life and they take life as it comes, while most men said that they have wives who do not nag and are tolerant.

God wants us to be happy in life. Every Christian is expected to be cheerful and at the service of others. We can all be happy, if we make others around us happy. Children can make their parents happy by obeying them, studying well, and saying their daily prayers. Parents can make their children happy by treating them as responsible young adults. Elderly people should be treasured and treated with respect. We should never have regrets about not taking proper care of them when they depart to their final destination.

No one should go to bed angry . . . . . . . . Do not let the sun go down on your anger. Ephesians 4:26. As we celebrate the birthday of our Blessed Mother, let us ask her to intercede for us so that we build a happy family, happy community and a happy church.

- Deacon Fredrick Correa

...No one will take away your joy (John 16:22)

On the occasion of Parents' day, the widows of Hope and Life Association, held a get to-gether

on the 27th of July, 2018. We began the programme with an Opening Prayer by Fr. Michael D'Souza. The Marathi hymn, Sant Anna was sung by all the members.

Fr. Hendrick Itur, our Spiritual Director, welcomed Fr. Barthol, Fr. Michael, Fr. Joseph, Deacon Fredrick, Sr. Meena and Sr. Sangeeta. Each member attending the get to gether was requested to get some snacks and contribute it to the common table. There was fine spread of pancakes, samosas, cookies, idlies, medhu-vadas, cake, chivda, sandwiches, donuts, kachoris, chaklis etc. Every member was free to serve as per one's taste.

We had singing and dancing of foot tapping East Indian songs by our own widows, after which we played Housie. This was a memorable occasion for all of us. WE WIDOWS ROCK!!!

This year, our parish has been blessed with 4 priests: Fr.

Barthol Machado, Fr. Michael D'Souza, Fr. Hendrick Itur and Fr. Joseph Mathew. We also have Deacon Fredrick Correa, Brother Crisler Francis and 3 sisters from Holy Cross Convent: Sr. Meena, Sr. Koshav and Sr. Sangeeta.

Fr. Barthol Machado has a strong personality; he is also down to earth and is a thorough gentleman. He is a good listener, patiently listening to our problems and helping resolve them. Fr. Barthol has founded a co-operative society for the fishermen which has financially benefited many families. He is now managing school along with other activities.

Fr. Michael D'Souza is the eldest in our parish team; he is soft spoken, humble, fun loving by nature and gets along well with us during committee meetings. He had been a parish priest at a number of parishes. He is now the Spiritual Director of the Senior Citizens' group besides other associations.

Deacon Fredrick Correa is the Spiritual Director of the English speaking Legion of Mary, Family Cell and takes up religion classes for 7th standard Catholic children.

Fr. Joseph Mathew was ordained on April 7, 2018 at St. Pius Seminary, Goregaon. As a deacon, he served at St. Blaise church, Amboli. As a priest, he begun his ministry with Our Lady of Nazareth church, Bhayandar. He has an easy going personality, is humble and encouraging in nature. He is now in charge of English Lectors and other associations.

Fr. Hendrick Itur was ordained on April 5, 2014 at St. Pius Seminary Goregaon. He first served as an assistant priest at St. Thomas church, Goregaon East. For the past four years, he has been in that parish. He believes in punctuality and is a sportsman and loves music and sketching. He is now in charge of the youth, choir and other associations.

Bro. Crisler Francis, is an engineer who also has a BA in Philosophy and a MA in Literature. He was the administrator of the primary school run by Our Lady of Help of Christians Parish, Kapustalni, Amravati, when he was in charge of 105 boarders. Currently, he is at St. Pius Seminary, pursuing the first year of his theology and does pastoral work over the weekend at Our Lady of Nazareth church, as a Catechist. He was instrumental in building

Row, row, row the boat . . .

and strengthening all the parish associations.

After seven years of dedicated service at Our Lady of Nazareth church, Fr. Anthony Banz will now serve at Our Lady of Fatima church, Majiwada, Thane as assistant priest.

Laity Sunday was celebrated in our Archdiocese on 24th June 2018 at Dr. Antonio D'Silva School

hall, Dadar. The heads of Cells and Associations from across the Archdiocese were present for this gathering. The theme for this programme was “Call to Holiness.”

Fr. Gerard Rodrigues explained in simple words the Apostolic Exhortation of Pope Francis – Gaudete et Exsultate. He reflected on the lives of some of the saints who were ordinary people like us.

Fr. Sandeep Borges, explained the theme in Martathi and in Hindi. Spot prizes were given, which made the programme very lively. A video clip of a visually impaired person was very touching.

Bishop Barthol Barretto, in charge of the Laity congratulated and thanked all the members present and said that each one of us has the responsibility to proclaim the Good News and reach out to others.

The anthem, I am a Catholic, I am alive, made the audience sing with tremendous enthusiasm. It was indeed a spiritual and informative programme.

Have You Heard of the Legion of Mary?

It is a group of Catholics who have accepted the invitation of Christ to join the apostolate of the Church and who work under the banner of Mary, the Commander in Chief of this band of Apostles. The very name LEGION OF MARY suggests that it stands ready in battle at the service of the Church.

Home visitations, visiting the sick in their homes and in hospitals, arranging Holy Communion for them, visitation of institutions, ashrams, clergy homes are some of the activities undertaken by members of the Legion of Mary.

The motto of the Legion of Mary is to be at the service of the people of God. While our meetings are held on Mondays at 5:15 PM, the Marathi Legion of Mary meetings are held on Saturdays at 7 PM, in the church meeting hall. Come and be a part of this apostolic work.

There is no doubt that the Holy Spirit came down on us. Most Confirmation students that went for the retreat to Mukti Sagar, on July 28 and 29, 2018 shared this experience.

Here are some of the opinions expressed by the participants.

“While I was not satisfied on the first day, I was in a shock the next day. I had never experienced anything like this before. Students were crying like babies!”

- Fr. Joseph Mathew

“No matter what we do, God continues to love us. We had a written confession and inner healing on the second day. We learned more about the Holy Spirit,”

-Participant

“During the inner healing session, I felt that God was amongst us. During the written confession session, I felt relieved from a ton of burdens. I had severe pain in my right leg for 3 days. After the inner healing session, the pain disappeared,”

-Participant

“Mukti Sagar means an ocean of release. Truly it was a place of freedom from all evils. The action songs energized us. I never thought that anything would happen when the healing session started but I felt the power of God in me. After the retreat, we visited the people in the Ashram at the premises. We were moved with the suffering the inmates go through. If I get another opportunity, I will surely go for it.”

-Participant

“The two days were amazing and an eye-opener. It gave me immense pleasure in that spiritual environment.”

- Participant

“The retreat was awesome. The inner healing session was the best part of the retreat. The environment was peaceful. I loved the retreat and would like to attend more retreats like this one.”

- Participant

“It was a great joy to accompany the Confirmation students and counsel some of them, during the retreat.”

- Participant

Confirmation Retreat Experience

With zeal and great joy, the youth and children of St. Andrew's community poured out their

wishes through greeting cards made by them and expressed their love with a red rose by visiting the sick. We were overwhelmed by their thoughtfulness, as family is the fundamental unit of a community and parents as well as children are the pillars of the community.

Parents are well-wishers, teachers, mentors and protectors of their children. Hats off to the children for showing their unconditional love. The youth hosted a special function with a skit, dance and party, and delicious snacks served for everyone.

St. Andrew's Community Shows Love Toward the Sick

The month of September is dedicated to Mother Mary. She is the mother of Christ and the Church.

The Marian title of “Mother of the Church” was given to our Blessed Virgin by Pope Paul VI in 1975. We find all our Catholic churches around the world with a statue or picture of Mother Mary and during the season of feast or pilgrimage, millions of people throng to her shrines for thanksgivings, Blessings and asking favours.

Mother Mary is the patron saint of sailors. She has been regarded as the Star of the Ocean, the Morning Star.

We are fortunate to have Mother Mary in our midst. Our church magazine 'Theotokos' which means 'Mother of God' is rightly titled. This wonderful title reveals a profound truth about each one of us. Miracle do often happen in our Parish but a very small number are ware of the cure under our own eyes!

Love Our Lady and she will obtain abundant grace to help you to conquer in your daily struggle – Saint Jose Maria Escriva.

Who is a teacher? Someone who helps us acquire knowledge. This 7 letter word has a long lasting impact on the lives of students. They are God's gifted people in everyone's life, who lead us towards success without any selfishness. Of all the hard jobs around, one of the hardest is being a good teacher.

A teacher not only teaches us book-knowledge but also inculcates moral values in us. They are like our second parents. We should never forget our first teacher, our parents.

I like my teachers as they are very enthusiastic, jovial, and knowledgeable. There is a saying, “A good teacher is like a candle – it consumes itself to light the way for others.” Respect your teachers.

Returned to the Lord

St. John Mary Vianney once said “Oh how great is the Mass!”.... If one realizedwhat the Mass is, he would

die of happiness! The Holy Father, Pope Francis embodies in himself in every way the spirit of St. John Mary Vianney - simple and humble, down-to-earth, with mercy and compassion in boundless proportions. In one of his homilies, the Pope said, “I see clearly that the thing the Church needs most today, is the ability to heal wounds and to warm the hearts of the faithful and it needs nearness, proximity. I see the Church as a hospital after battle. The Church sometimes has locked itself up in small things, in small-minded-rules but the most important thing is the first proclamation: JESUS CHRIST HAS SAVED US”.

Born and made children of God

St. John Mary Vianney is the patron of not only the Diocesan Clergy but of all the priests. We celebrated this feast on 5th August, 2018 with the active participation of our faithful. May we see his closeness and proximity in our priests, through their family visits, the meaningful celebration of the sacraments, especially the confession where we experience the mercy and compassion of God.

The feast reminds us to acknowledge the services of our priests. Let us remember the words of St. John Mary Vianney who said, “Priesthood is the love of the heart of Jesus. We wish you all a very happy feast dear Rev. Fathers.

As parents, the greatest gift you can give your children are the roots of responsibility and the wings of independence.

This is exactly what we witnessed in our youth and children who took the initiative and with great team work conducted an excellent programme on July 29, 2018.

During the Parents' Day celebration, parents felt honoured, cared for and loved by our children. Right from the décor of the venue, to welcoming parents, opening prayers, inspiring speeches, simple yet meaningful skits, the feet tapping dance, entertaining games, gifts and refreshing snacks - all of it was so good. It is said, thankfulness may consist merely of word but gratitude is shown by actions. Our youth and children showed it loud and clear.

The presence of our Spiritual Director Rev. Fr. Michael D'Souza, Rev. Barthol Machado, the parish priest, Rev. Fr. Hendrick Itur and their blessings added an extra touch of appreciation and happiness to our community.

We cannot thank our youth and children enough. Love you all for this memorable event, especially for the super take away gift – a meaningful message.

Andrean youth and children remember:

You have within Good, Better and Best

But, Never let it Rest

Till your Good is Better

And your Better is Best!

A Day to Remember Parents' Day Celebration

With great enthusiasm, 4 Confirmation students of our Community, Jaden Pereira, Joshua

Fernandes, Joshua Ferreira and Jonathan Joseph took the initiative in celebrating the parents' day on 26th July 2018 at 803 Span Excellency, the premises were kindly allowed to use by Mr. Alan and Mrs. Cheryl Fernandes.

The programme began with a prayer led by Deacon Fredrick. The 4 students . . . . with the accompaniment of guitars sang lovely songs for the parents. Snacks and cold drinks were distributed. There were some on the spot prizes.

A grand housie with attractive prizes was conducted by the confirmation students, assisted by the Coordinator Mrs. Cheryl.

Members had brought home made food. There was chicken vindalo, pulav, mango pickle, cutlets, Sri Lanka salad, mixed vegetables, chapatis, rice bread, custard, gulab jamun, soft drinks . . .

Truly, 19 members who were present enjoyed the evening.

The youth were planning to celebrate Parents’ Day differently this year and so it was decided to have it

at the zonal level.

There were many ups and downs while making decisions about the Parents’ Day celebration at a zonal level. We had a grand celebration including games and spot prizes for all. We received help from area members as well as the youth of our zone to make it a grand success.

A big smile on their faces, a twinkle in their eyes and a warm welcome…those were the memorable moments that we

the youth and children of St. Andrew's zone experienced when we visited the old, the sick and lonely parents of our zone on July 26, 2018. Their joy knew no bounds when they saw so many children wishing them on Parents' Day. They accepted the roses and the handmade greeting cards with deep gratitude.

We were also very glad that we got an opportunity to organize a programme for all the parents of our zone on July 29, 2018. Parents always strive hard to see their children happy and this was our chance to give them fun filled moments of joy. The wholehearted preparation began two weeks ahead of the programme and it turned out to be a great event. The skit, the dances, and the games created a joyous environment. The East Indian Masala song at the end brought everyone on the dance floor. We had put up a chart asking for feedback about the programme and were pleasantly surprised to see the chart full of words of appreciation.

Indeed, we did experience a deep sense of satisfaction.

- Shoydon Alphonso, Lepora Street

Thank you . . . we want more!

It was the first time that we decided to celebrate Parents’ Day at a zonal level. At first, we felt it would not be

successful because we thought that members may not be ready to have the Parents’ Day celebration but with the help of the youth and Parish Youth Animators and members, the celebration took place.

The Church Road and Gomes Street zones had the get together and the joyful spirit was simply great. We had games like musical chairs, bombing the cities, Housie and spot prizes. The icing on the cake was the dance performance by children.

At the end, everyone went home with a smile.
