Greg Balkovek and Janice Cunningham have reserved the Elks club for April 20, 2018. It should be fun and maybe we can start thinking now about asking non-members to consider a donation for the auction. Usually we just get dona- tions from members who are generous every year, but it might raise more money if we could involve non-members too. The dart game is generating a bit more interest. Remember for your five dollars we will draw two numbers and if you get a bullseye, you will receive a $70 credit towards your lunch bill. In addition, I usually stand close enough that you might just stick me in the leg! Make sure you email or text me if you do not want me to ask about moving your feet during your recognition. Personally I like to hear how you all are staying in shape and staying out of the doctor s office! Finally my goal this year is to make the meetings fun and to learn something. Hope that is ok with all of you. If you are a team captain, you can help me some by filling out that team meeting form and get it to me before the meeting. More important is get the pictures associated with recog- nitions to the AV group. If you are not sure how to do this, Todd Davis sent out an email with in- structions; I am sure he will resend it if you ask him. Here is hoping we all have a great year. Thanks, Richard President Richards Message Hi everyone! Hope you are all surviving the heat and having a great summer. On that note, just a reminder that our club has reserved the entire Water Works Park on the evening of August 11 from 6:30 to 10:00 pm. There will be no charge for rotary members and family. Friends are also welcome and there will be a $15 charge for all guests over the age of two. Beer and wine will be available for pur- chase and there will be food as well. Should be super fun. This year our major fundraiser will be the wild game feed with an auction. We have done this in years past. Now we are bring it back.

Tyler Hendrickson is a registered architect in the state of California. He is an accredited LEED Green Associate through USGBC and Certified Revit Professional with Autodesk. Among many oth-er things Tyler is a maker, a boat builder, and performs crime scene investigation creation. Tyler has a vision of wanting to help others create something from an original idea.

ONESHOP operates under the fundamental belief that nested deep in each one of us is a single truth... We are all makers. Since the beginning of time we have been designing and construct-ing from the art on the cave walls at Lascaux to empires designed by kings. As a community, its our streets that weave us together and our buildings that protect us. ONESHOP favors no craft. The art-ist and the furniture designer. The seamstress and the architect. At ONESHOP we are all the same because each one of us has something to teach, something to learn and everyone has something to make.

ONESHOP will be different for me than it is for you. I am an architect. I am a boat builder. I am a designer. I have a romantic relationship with software that brings to life the images my mind creates. I am obsessed with technology. I am a developer at heart looking to inspire smart, sophisti-cated and responsive design in our community one project per year. In ONESHOP I teach what I know, make what I can and learn the rest. What each of us can do by ourselves will never be as great as what we can do as a community when we come together under one roof in ONESHOP.

ONESHOP offers a space in which we can collaborate. An environment where we can learn. A place where we can teach classes. A shop with the tools and equipment needed to bring design to reality. ONESHOP offers the latest in digital fabrication like 3D printing, CNC milling, laser cutting, CNC routing, and CNC plasma cutting. It provides industry leading design software. It con-tains an art studio and a reprographics room for design iteration and reproduction. We have a wood-shop for the traditional builder and the technology for those seeking a new work-flow.

ONESHOP provides a place where we can come together as a community to inspire Red-ding through craft and building.

We learn, make and teach in ONESHOP. Join us now!

All equipment is available for self directed use per membership.

Any Member can teach a seminar of their choosing. 50% of all seminar proceeds will be used by ONESHOP for new equipment.

President Richards Recognitions

August Calendar

August 3rd Shasta County Art Council - Debra Lucero

August 10th EDC Program - Tony G.

August 17th TBA

August 24th Redding Trail Alliance

August 31st Chico State University - Gayle Hutchinson

Richard Started with Courtney McElvain showing some pictures of a fantastic trip to Scotland to visit her sister. The entire McElvain family enjoyed the trip. Courtney gave a $100 contribution.

Next Richard showed a picture of Rick Hill moving his feet. Looks like Rick is a regular at the gym. There is absolutely no truth to the rumor that Rick will be starring in a new Rambo movie called “Rambo Visits Morgan Stanley.” Rick donated $100 to the club and $100 to his Paul Harris Fellow. Lee and Judy Salter took a trip to New Mexico. Sounds like Lee had a secret desire to see Roswell and possibly be the first to see an alien. Unfortunate-ly no aliens showed up but Lee and Judy had a great trip. Both gave $100 to the club. Thanks to all for your generous contributions to the Rotary Club of Redding.

Gene has been a member of Redding Rotary since Septem-ber 26, 1991. I remember Gene placing a great deal of im-portance and value on his Rotary participation. Outside of a fam-ily member, Gene was the first Rotarian in our community that I had met. I was impressed! But there is a lot more to his in-volvement and commitment to Rotary.

Gene has served our club in a broad variety of ways. He has been the local service director from 2005 – 2007. He was chair-person of the Thanksgiving Project for many years, and still is one of those faithful individuals helping keep the vehicles and volunteers moving on that special work day. Gene chaired the

Community Projects committee, and the Sergeant of Arms Committee. He has given many years’ to the membership committee, is dedicated to Honor the Youth, has participated in the environment activities, and a faithful partner in the Reading Rotarians. You can find him patiently guiding many of us through the attendance procedures when we arrive, always with a smile and a ready laugh.

Gene Poch - Civil Engineer Extraordinaire

Interview by Marjeanne Stone

Gene grew up in Cheyenne, Wyoming, and was the youngest of 7 sons of Paul and Ruth Poch. There was no sister in the bunch. The first 6 sons had a 12 year spread, and Gene was born 6 years after his older brother.

The Poch family remained in Cheyenne, where Gene attended Johnson Elementary and Junior High Schools, and graduated from Cheyenne High School in 1954. He went on to the South Dakota School of Mines and Technology, where he earned a B.S. in Civil Engineering. He was a 2

nd Lt. in the Corps of En-

gineers, US Army Reserve. At that time the U.S. was gearing up to build the Interstate Highway System. In 1958 the California Division of Highways was inter-viewing and hiring engineers nation-wide. Since he could only work 9 months before reporting to the Ar-my, he chose to go to California. Gene reported to the Department of Highway system in 1958, in Redding.

Gene was a civil engineer, Traffic engineer, and manager in the Division of Highways/Caltrans from 1958 until his retirement in July, 1998. Almost all of his employment was out of the Redding office, except from 1959 -1961, when he was on active duty in the Army, and 1983 -1991, when he was promoted to positions in San Francisco, Sacramento, and Eureka. Gene and his wife, Marlys returned to Redding in 1991. A lot of the infrastructure of our local highways were developed during Gene’s tenure with Caltrans.

What are your hobbies? Gene has varied interests, from genealogy, to reading (he serves as a library volunteer), keeping his joints moving at the gym 3 times a week, doing yard work, and shar-ing his retirement with Marlys. Gene has enjoyed tennis, golf, skiing, and jogging. His knees are not what they used to be, so some of the activities he enjoys have changed a little.

Gene still has one living brother who turns 92 this year. Gene met his wife, Marlys, a nursing student at South Dakota State University. They were both seniors in college. They are the proud parents of son, Keith, and daughter, Karen, and grandparents of 3 (Keith’s children).

What were some of your Rotary highlights? Chairing the Rotary Thanksgiving Project. Gene particularly enjoyed the team socials that we had at members’ homes where we got to know each other and the spouse/significant others of our members. He misses these as they are not as fre-quent as in past years.

What advice would you give to the newer Rotarians? “We have 180-200 members. If you join a clique and sit with the same people at noon meetings, you will never get to know most of them. Get out of your comfort zone and sit at a different table each week.”

I have had great fun “being a ding-a-ling” with Gene, standing outside Food Maxx, for the Salva-tion Army Red Kettle times at Christmas. I remember Gene fondly from a shared community in-volvement, and he has been a man I truly respected and looked up to. I have witnessed his sharing with others, and his quiet leadership style. When I learned that he was a Rotarian, I had even more personal respect for our club, because the members bring commitment of service to a broader community than just the Rotarian projects and committees. Gene, along with others, takes the per-sonal commitment further, and applies the Rotarian principles in all his experiences.

So when you arrive on Thursdays, and Gene is assisting with membership attendance, take a minute and thank him for all that he has done and continues to do.

The Golden Eagle Hotel A meeting place for the Rotary Club of Redding

By Spillway Contributor Randy Smith

Here is an image of the Golden Eagle Hotel as many in our club will remember it. A Grind-stone bronze will be unveiled on September 22nd at Noon to tell the whole story and be installed near the NW corner of the once grand hotel and around the visible corner of the smaller Hotel Yu-ba. Ironically, the date of the fire occurred on the deer season opener in 1962, just as it is this year.

The hotel was built - in 1888 - by John W. Potts and partner Mr. Eberle. John J. Bartosh bought the Golden Eagle Cigar Store sometime between the July 10 and July 20 of 1907. He had worked for Potts for seven years as a cigar maker.

The Grindstone Club was a Redding social club established in the 1880s whose male mem-bers were leading citizens. Meetings were held in the Golden Eagle Hotel, where discussions of abandon and questions of civil government, theology and philosophy were held. The club began in 1870 at Voluntine's hardware store on Main Street in Shasta, where the members sat out front on grindstones. Years later it moved to the hotel, where meetings were held out front beside the dirt street until 1920. Today, meetings have been re-established behind the office of Dr. Chet Sunde on Oregon Street, in the yard or in the garage/clubhouse, depending on the weather.

The final end to this first-class hotel came only a few days after the fire. On Sept. 25, 1962 the remains of the fire were demolished and removed..
