Faith TakesGod is reaching His hand down from Heaven, saying, “My child, here’s all you will ever need to have happiness, godliness, and a joyous life on earth. Here it is!”

You can look at that hand and say, “Oh, I wish that were so. Wouldn’t that be nice!” Or you can, by faith, reach up and grab hold of all the provisions of life God’s hand is offering you.

With your other hand, grab hold of the things that hinder you from enjoying godliness, health, wealth, and happiness. Your faith will activate God’s power and that power will flow through you to set you free from those hindrances.

Never release your hold on God as He reaches down and offers the provision of life to you.

You see, God is not going to hit you over the head and say, “My child, get in line. Here it is. Take it.” He’s not going to drop it on you. He’s not going to spoon-feed you and force it down your mouth. No, all He’s going to do is offer it. It’s there.

You must take it by faith. Faith takes.

And after faith takes, faith never turns loose. And because faith never turns loose, it leads to success by the power of God.

Another thing faith does is rejoice. It rejoices now—not when it happens or manifests. So go ahead and rejoice!

As you walk this great walk of faith never again say, “I don’t know if I’m going to make it or not.”

From now on, talk in faith and take it by faith. It may look bleak, but never relinquish your hold. Once you start out in faith, hold fast to your confession and praise God all the way to victory.

Let this month’s issue encourage you to follow God wholeheartedly. Lynette wrote an article that shows you how to find joy and contentment in Christ. My article explains what Rhema is: a word, a place, and a worldwide family with the mandate to “Go teach My people faith.” Enjoy this issue.

THE WORD “RHEMA” is infused in everything connected with Kenneth Hagin Ministries. But what is it exactly? The following three answers will shed light on the meaning of “rhema,” reveal-ing the origin of something very powerful.

Rhema—A Spoken WordThe Greek word rhḗma simply means “any spoken word.” In

the New Testament, there are two different Greek words used to identify words from God: lógos and rhḗma.

Logos is used in John 1:1 (NKJV). “In the beginning was the [logos] Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God” (John 1:1 NKJV).

Rhema is a spoken word. “And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the [spoken] word of God” (Eph. 6:17 NKJV).

When Jesus was tempted by Sa-tan in the wilderness, He countered each temptation by speaking a “rhe-ma” word. In Matthew 4:4, He said, “It is written, ‘Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every [spoken (rhema)] word.’ ” Jesus spoke the

written Word He needed for the situation. So a rhema word can be the spoken Word of God.

We need the written Word as our foundation, but we also need the spoken Word (rhema) for direction. We have the written

Word, to stand on. We have rhema, the spoken Word, so we know what to do and where to go.

When the Holy Spirit speaks to you, He quickens a Scripture verse or specific direction to you—a specific word for a specific time and purpose.

Rhema—A PlaceRhema Bible Training College began with a quickened word

spoken by my dad, Kenneth E. Hagin. When Dad received the mandate, “Go teach My people faith,” that was a rhema word to him of what to do in ministry. I often heard him pray, “Lord, how am I going to get this mes-sage out? I’m just one man.”

His answer came during Campmeeting 1973. Dad said under the inspiration of the Spirit, “We’re going to start a Bible school!” When he said that, I had a rhema word inside of me—Lynette and I were to help Dad start the school. Those rhema words gave the direction of how to get the faith message out and fulfill the mandate.

Dad didn’t want to put his name on the school. When we dis-cussed what to call it, he suggested “Rhema” based on a message Roy Hicks taught at Campmeeting.

We chose the name Rhema Bible Training College because it is purpose driven, not personality driven. And it’s still not per-sonality driven! It was founded on the principles of the infallible Word of God, learning how to be led by the Spirit, and knowing the authority of the believer—while zeroing in on the practical aspects of ministry.

Rhema—A Worldwide FamilyBack in the 1930s, a young farmer got saved at a tent meeting.

His parents didn’t like it, so they wouldn’t let him go back to the tent meeting. But he would come up to a grassy knoll on the fam-ily farm—right about where Rhema Bible Church stands today—to read his Bible and pray. He had a vision that a mighty work of God would be raised up on that very place. The Lord told him that from this place, the Gospel would go out all over the world.

The young man had a rhema word—a word from God! This campus was God ordained. It wasn’t man’s idea. It was God’s

idea. And from this place, men and women have been trained with the message of faith and have gone around the world.

It’s like throwing a rock in a pond. There’s a splash and it ripples across the water. People have gone out from Rhema and started churches. Men and women are coming from those churches to be trained. Then they’re going back out to start what God spoke to them.

For many years there was only one Rhema. But today there are over 235 Rhema Bible Train-ing College campuses in 50 na-tions. It has become a worldwide family!

You might say, “I didn’t grad-uate from Rhema.” If you follow this ministry, have sown seed into it, or have learned and grown from the books and teachings, then you are part of the family. It’s all of us together. We are the Rhema family.

We have been raised up to fulfill the Great Commission. Thank God for Rhema! Rhema is the spoken Word. Rhema is a place to be trained. Rhema is a worldwide family. Rhḗma—A Definitionrhḗma (ῥῆμα in Greek); that which is spoken, what is ut-tered in speech or writing;1 an utterance (individually, col-lectively, or specifically);2 the word by which something is commanded, directed, or enjoined;3 something that is spoken clearly and vividly, in unmistakable terms and in an undeniable language. In the New Testament, the word rhema carries the idea of a quickened word.4

Tongues: The Door Into the SupernaturalSPEAKING IN TONGUES is the door into all the other spiritual gifts. Some people like to jump in and get all the gifts of the Spirit at once. But you have to go through the door to get into the supernatural.

I have found in my own life that the more I speak in tongues—the more I pray and worship God in

tongues—the more the other gifts of the Spirit manifest. The less I speak in tongues, the less manifestation of the other gifts of the Spirit I have operating in my life.

The Bible teaches us to desire spiritual gifts (1 Cor. 14:1) and to earnestly covet the best gifts (1 Cor. 12:31). As we do this, we will walk in more power and be more effective in our Christian lives. We will go through the door of the baptism in the Holy Spirit to receive the glori-ous spiritual gifts that God promised to those who believe His Word.

I am convinced that if we would be sensitive and responsive to the Holy Spirit, He knows what is com-ing in the future. And He will show us things to come (John 16:13).

An English missionary to Af-rica was home on leave speaking at a missionary conference when a

woman asked him if he kept a diary. He replied that he did. She began to relate to him, “Two years ago I was awakened in the night with a burden to pray. I got out of bed and was talking in tongues before I got down on my knees. For an hour I prayed in tongues. It seemed as if I were wrestling.

“When I finished praying I had a vision. I saw you in a grass hut sur-rounded by natives. You were sick and then died. I saw the natives pull a sheet over your head and walk sadly out of the hut. Suddenly you came out of the hut and stood in their midst. All of the natives began to rejoice.”

The missionary asked the wom-an if she kept a diary and requested she bring it that afternoon. Compar-ing diaries, and making allowances for time differences in England and Africa, they discovered the time of the woman’s prayer burden exactly coincided with the time when the missionary was sick with a deadly fever.

His partner was away, and he was alone with the natives. Things happened just as she saw—the missionary died, the natives saw him die and pulled a sheet over his head—then he rose up suddenly well! Because of the Spirit of God!

This is an example of how pray-ing in tongues equips us for what lies ahead in life if we will yield to Him. It is one way to be built up spiritually and to be ready for what-ever may come in the future.

Are you, as a Spirit-filled believer, taking full advantage of the gift of tongues? God has given to us a su-pernatural means of communication with Him. He has given to us a su-pernatural way of building ourselves up spiritually. ONE SUBJECT we don’t hear taught very often, but desperately need to hear about, is the subject of contentment. In the day and age in which we live, discontentment seems to be prevalent not only in the world, but also in Chris-tian circles. We know the reason non-Christians are discontented: true joy, peace, and contentment are

only found in Christ. But more and more Christians are living in discontentment.

When we face various trials—or bumps—in life, there is a temptation to lose our joy. Circumstances often threaten to steal our contentment. But we can learn to be content, no matter what is going on around us or where we are along God’s path for our life.

One person who knew the secret of contentment was the Apostle Paul. In writing to the Philippians, he shared this secret even while he was enduring imprisonment, chains, and bonds. Although he was facing adverse circumstances, he said, “I have learned to be content in whatever state I’m in” (Phil. 4:11). Paul knew the secret of living a satisfied life. He was contented, be-cause he was committed. A good equation to remember is this: Commitment plus contentment equals joy.

Uprooting DiscontentmentDiscontentment will cause us to lose our evidence that we are

Christians. Many Christians have lost their joy and are no longer an example to the world. Non-Christians are already discontent.

Why would they want to become a Christian if all they see are discontented Christians? How can we expect to win others to Christ?

How it must grieve God to see His people so discontented in life, especially when He sent Jesus to give us abundant life (John 10:10). Discontentment is like a weed; you don’t have to do any-thing for it to grow. If you allow it to be planted in your heart, it will grow on its own.

It takes effort and practice to be content. It’s only achieved through continual application and sus-tained effort. You might say, “But you don’t know what my circumstances are. If you were in my shoes, you wouldn’t be content either.”

Everyone has some issue in his life that could give him or her reason to be-come discontented. None of our lives are free from problems. It’s how we approach the problems that counts. Whether we approach them negatively or positively will determine if we are contented or dis-contented.

Be CommittedThe first thing we must do to be contented is to be committed.

We are to be committed to Jesus. The Bible makes it clear that our devotion to God ought to be first and foremost.

MATTHEW 6:3333 But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you.

PSALM 37:4–54 Delight thyself also in the Lord: and he shall give thee the desires of thine heart.5 Commit thy way unto the Lord; trust also in him; and he shall bring it to pass.

You will never be completely happy and know true contentment until you have committed your entire self to God. Commitment isn’t easy, but it’s rewarding. When you make the commitment, contentment follows.

We need to be so committed that regardless of the circum-stances, we will still serve God. Too many people have the at-titude, “God if You bless me, I’ll serve You.” Or, “God, prosper me, and I’ll witness for You.” But that’s not the way it goes.

It’s not wrong to ask God for things, but too often we’re so intent on what the Lord can do for us, that we forget about what we can do for Him. We must remember to ask God, “What can I do for You?” Someone who always thinks of himself and what he can get will never be content. We must give of ourselves to be contented. It is truly more blessed to give than to receive (Acts 20:35).

The Secret of Contentment: Enjoy TodayHave you ever heard the phrase, “Tomorrow never comes”? In

other words, each day you live is always “today.” Don’t become so wrapped up in the future that you miss out on today. It’s fine to have aspirations and ambitions. But learn to be content with what you have right now. Give today your best, and give the rest to God.

So many people are discontented in their job. They’re not enjoying the job they have right now, because they’re thinking about the possible promotion they might get in the future. Others can’t enjoy their home right now because they’re thinking of the better home they want in the future.

I’ll never forget our first home. It wasn’t a very large house. It was old and the windows were rotting out. When the cold north wind blew, it was easy to become discontented. There were many times we had every burner on the stove turned on. Without cen-tral heat, that was the only way we could warm the house. But I was always content there. Some of our friends moved into better homes before we did, but I never once got jealous.

Many times we will miss what the Lord has in store for us by becoming jealous of someone else’s success. Jealousy is a sure way to hinder our blessing. When you are content with your pres-ent state and stay committed to do what you’re supposed to do at the moment, God will surely reward you.

Stay FaithfulThe secret to being content regardless of your situation is to

know that God will take care of you. We often become discon-tented because our daily tasks sometimes seem mundane and

unimportant. But we must remember that God has not forgotten us. When we stay faithful to follow God’s leading in the “here and now,” He will see to it that our future needs are met and our dreams fulfilled.

Are you discontented because you don’t want to do what God has called you to do at this time? Do the dreams in your heart tug at your mind and cause you to become discontented in your pres-ent situation? It’s only as you become content with what God has planned for you at this time that promotion will come.

God is the One Who is more than enough. He is the All-Sufficient God, and He will do all that He has promised to do. Learn to commit to Him. Learn to be content in Him. And He will give you joy unspeakable every day of your life.G I V E T O D AY your best,

Connection—We Need Each OtherGOD DID NOT walk alone. His de-sign includes relationship with Him and with one another. In Genesis 2:18 (MSG), God says “It’s not good for the Man to be alone; I’ll make him a helper, a companion.” At that time, it was just Adam and God, and God said that a relationship with Him alone was not enough!

We have a vertical relationship with God, but we also need a hori-zontal relationship with God in oth-ers. (See Eccl. 4:9–12 NLT.)

If we’re honest, many of us don’t involve others in our lives because of shame. We don’t want them to know what we’re going through or the pain we’re feeling. We cut our-selves off from people—thinking that we’re protecting ourselves. But we’re really cutting off a pipeline that we need.

Even Jesus demonstrated the need for connection. When He went to the Garden of Gethsemane, He asked three of the disciples to come with Him (Matt. 26:36–38). If Jesus needed people, how much more do we?

When it comes to connections, we need to identify where we are. We all probably fit in one of the fol-lowing four categories:

NO CONNECTIONS: You don’t have connections except for God. You may be with people, but you’re really not connected with them.

UNHEALTHY CONNECTIONS: When you spend time with people in your life, do you feel drained? Let’s take care of our souls.

FAKE CONNECTIONS: Do you put on a happy face but inside feel like a mess? Let’s get past the fake and be real.

REAL CONNECTIONS: These are people that love Jesus. They will love you through your stuff—no matter what—and you can love them back. They are friends that will give you grace and truth.

I encourage you to connect and let others see the real you. There’s a grace in each of us for one another. Open that door. Come out of isola-tion. You’re precious and beautiful. Tell Them!DENISE HAGIN BURNS

THE YOUTH of today will never know a world without technology. Known as the “iGeneration,” they can connect to the world through a device in their hands. They live in a world of dangerous extremes. To them everything is fluid with no absolutes. Suicide is skyrocket-ing. Lockdown drills in schools are common occurrences. Pornography is literally in their hands, a screen swipe away. They live under a bar-rage of social media. Their world is very, very loud.

Not long ago, a spirit of interces-sory prayer overwhelmed me. The Lord said, “You need to advocate to the church on behalf of this genera-tion to step up and take their place.” The church has a place in their lives.

God reminded me of Paul en-couraging a young man. “But you, Timothy, certainly know what I teach, and how I live, and what my purpose in life is. You know my faith, my patience, my love, and my endurance” (2 Tim. 3:10 NLT). Then in verse 14, “You must remain faithful to the things you have been taught. You know they are true, for you know you can trust those who taught you.”

Can youth today say that of us? Do they know what we teach, how we live, our purpose in life? We must boldly speak up. We have to be the ones they can trust.

Psalm 78:2–4 (NLT) says, “I will teach you . . . stories our ancestors handed down to us. We will not hide these truths from our children; we will tell the next generation about the glorious deeds of the Lord, about his power and his mighty wonders.”

Every generation has witnessed moves of God. It’s the responsibility of all of us to tell these stories to this generation.

Recently my oldest son was on his computer, and I heard what sounded like my “pawpaw’s” voice. One of his friends told him that his great grandpa, Kenneth E. Hagin, was on YouTube. He came to me and asked, “Mom, why didn’t you tell me? He’s laying hands on peo-ple and they’re laughing and danc-ing. What is that?”

I didn’t do this on purpose, but I was “hiding” these things from my son! I took it for granted that he knew. So we sat and watched videos of “paw-paw.” I told him about miracles, heal-ings, and the mighty move of God I had experienced when I was younger.

It really broke my heart. It’s our responsibility to teach this gener-ation—to pray and intercede for them. They might miss the move of the Holy Spirit if we don’t tell them.

We all have a part to play. Twen-tysomethings, 30-somethings, we need you! We’re counting on you because you have the ear of this generation. You know what they’re going through. You can reach them.

Fortysomethings, 50-somethings, we need you! Mentor these 20- and 30-somethings. Be there for them. Spend time with them. Help them grow spiritually. Mentor them so they can help the iGeneration.

Sixty-plus—we need you! You’re the prayer people! You know how to get in touch with God. We all should pray, but there’s something about older saints who know how to get down on their knees and pray!

It’s going to take all of us! Let this challenge penetrate your heart. Get involved. Pray. Do whatever you can to reach this generation.

THE YEAR was 1997. It was a Thursday night in Farmers Branch, Texas, at a church revival. The evangelist invited anyone who needed a touch from God to come forward. Sitting in the back of the church was a young, angry Chad Gonzales. He didn’t want to be there and was basically dragged to the meetings.

Although Chad grew up in church and played the drums during worship, he doubted the existence of God. His dad had told him stories of healings in the 50s, and Chad wondered why it wasn’t happening today.

“God, if You’re even real,” Chad thought, “I want to see what You’ve got.” As praise music filled the air, he made his way to the front.

Chad stood at the altar, arrogant and mad. When the evangelist was about three feet from him, electricity shot through his body. The power of God was so strong that he began running around the church. In that moment, Chad knew the Lord was real. God filled his heart with His unconditional love and peace. His spirit was awakened.

“[That encounter] is what made me passionate about what we’re doing now,” says Chad. “I was a good church boy. I was in church three times a week my entire life. If I was questioning if God was real, what does that say for the person who shows up at Christmas and Easter?”

Sometime later, while Chad was working on his master’s de-gree, it began to weigh heavy on him to go into full-time ministry. Preaching, however, was not a part of his plan. He didn’t care about being in front of people. He was content to just play the drums.

After much wrestling, Chad surrendered to the Lord’s plan. In 2001, he stopped his graduate studies and moved to Broken Arrow, Oklahoma, to attend Rhema Bible Training College.

While at Rhema, Chad met his wife, Lacy, a 2001 graduate. Two weeks after Chad graduated in 2003, the couple married. The newlyweds moved to Chad’s hometown of Beaumont, Texas, where Chad served his pastor for three years.

During that time, Chad completed a master’s degree in coun-seling. He also began devouring books on healing. He read all of John G. Lake’s and Smith Wigglesworth’s books. Their testimo-nies of miraculous healings gave him a greater desire to see Jesus move in the same way today.

In 2006, Chad and his wife left Beaumont to pioneer Light-house Bible Church in College Station, Texas. Their first service was the Sunday after Labor Day.

Chad began teaching heal-ing to his congregation from the standpoint of our union with Christ. Jesus is the Vine, and we are the branches. As He is, so are we. And what flows through Christ, flows through us. In two short months, healings and mira-cles started happening.

The MiraculousOn a Sunday morning in No-

vember, a blind woman regained her eyesight. In another service, a four-year-old boy with Hod-gkin’s disease was healed. He had three tumors on his head, one the size of a golf ball. While Chad’s hand was on the young boy’s head, he could feel the tumor shrinking under his hand.

These two miracles lit Chad’s fire. The church began seeing healings and miracles every weekend. Lighthouse Bible Church became known as the place where miracles happened. In a two-year period, 20 people with cancer were healed! One woman with stage 3 breast cancer was healed. All of the many wonderful heal-ing miracles that happened are just too numerous to record.

In 2012, God began speaking to Chad and Lacy about mov-ing to Arkansas. They transitioned Lighthouse Bible Church over to another couple and moved to Jonesboro, Arkansas, to pastor Trinity Church. When they got to Arkansas, they picked up where they left off in Texas.

The church members quickly grabbed hold of what Chad was teaching. In fact, when they were looking for a pastor, one of the things they wanted to see in church services was miracles.

The twentysomethings in Trinity are grabbing hold of the miraculous. They’re boldly praying for the sick and are seeing people healed.

Two brothers who grew up in a denominational church started attending Trinity Church. They came to Trinity because they were hungry to know more about the baptism in the Holy Spirit. They also learned about God’s healing power and soon began acting on the Word. A young woman at the young adult Bible study had

a leg that was shorter than her other leg. One of the brothers boldly commanded it to grow, and her leg shot out!

Chad’s greatest joy is see-ing believers replicate the works of Jesus in their every-day lives. He wants the super-natural to become natural in the church. The Gonzaleses have a sincere desire to see people come to know who they are in Christ and live the vic-torious life God has provided for them. Emphasizing one’s identity in Christ and the miraculous power of God, they continue their mission to help people win in life through Jesus Christ.

Chad and Lacy have a weekly television program called Winning in Life, which reaches over a mil-lion people. As a way to help believers who are crying out to experience God and the supernatural, Chad recently started The Supernatural Life Podcast. In addition, Chad has authored nine books, his latest is Naturally Supernatural.

Awakening the ChurchChad has been spreading the message of who you are in Christ

in churches across the U.S. and abroad. When believers really understand their union with Christ, they are set free from the sick-ness that binds them. More and more, people are healed while they hear the Word taught without hands being laid on them.

Chad is committed to seeing the supernatural, not just for him-self but also for the masses. It’s his goal to help Christians grow in their connection with God so they can manifest God to the world.

As commencement ended, graduates walked out of the auditorium holding a lit candle in one hand and a baton in the other. Each baton bore the inscription: “I COMMIT TODAY TO CARRY THE BATON OF REVIVAL TO THIS GENERATION. I WILL CARRY THE BANNER OF FAITH AND GOD’S POWER TO A LOST AND DYING WORLD. THIS IS MY TIME TO DO ALL GOD HAS CALLED ME TO DO!”

Ready to Light Their WorldRHEMA USA GRADUATES 43RD CLASS

ON FRIDAY, May 19, 278 graduates of Rhema Bible Training College USA proudly entered the Cox Business Center auditorium in Tulsa, Oklahoma. Family and friends sur-rounded them, cheering and capturing the special moment with many pictures.

Along with a runner’s relay baton, each graduate received a diploma, which marked the completion of their studies. The baton serves as a reminder that others have run before them, and now, it’s their turn to enter the earth’s harvest fields and run their race for the Lord.

Rev. Dan Morrison, former pastor of Summit Church in Farmington, New Mexico, a 1981 and 1982 RBTC graduate, delivered the commencement address. Rev. Morrison re-minded the graduates that God has a plan for their lives.

Graduates, don’t think for a moment that God would mi-raculously lead you to Rhema, provide for you financially, and dynamically em-power you, only to leave you on the steps of the Cox Business Center with nothing

to do and nowhere to go.Jeremiah 29:11 in the Knox Bible says,

“I have not lost sight of my plan for you, the Lord says, and it is your welfare I have in mind, not your undoing; for you, too, I have a destiny and a hope.”

Thank God for the graduates who have gone before you. God is using them power-fully. But He is also saying, “for you, too, I have a destiny and a hope.”

You should never entertain thoughts of inadequacy—thoughts of “I can’t do this” or “I’m not good enough.” Thoughts like that don’t originate from God. They come from your insecurities and the devil.

Imagine an air traffic control radar screen. God knows where you are. He sees your heart full of obedience and surrender. You’re a bright blinking star on the radar screen of Heaven, ready for your next as-signment and destination.

GOD CALLS YOU A MASTERPIECE! “For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand that we should walk in them” (Eph. 2:10 NKJV).

YOU ARE GOD’S HANDIWORK. He has fit-ted you with a unique assignment, one that only you can accomplish. That’s why it’s unwise to compare yourselves with others.

GOD USES ORDINARY PEOPLE and gives them extraordinary plans. I think about how Jesus first called Peter.

Jesus was walking by the Sea of Galilee when He saw Peter and Andrew casting a net into the sea. He said to them, “Follow me, and I will make you fishers of men. They immediately left their nets and followed Him” (Matt. 4:19–20 NKJV).

Peter was an ordinary person with an or-dinary plan for his life. God, on the other hand, had an extraordinary plan for him.

God has a habit of taking ordinary peo-ple and placing dreams and callings on their lives. HE USES PEOPLE WITH INSECURITIES, FEARS, AND INADEQUACIES. Then, He sets them on a seemingly impossible course for their lives.

After you leave tonight, don’t miss the opportunities that will fall across your path. Some will be things that you never would have imagined. With every opportunity, you need to say, “SURE, I CAN DO THAT!”

At the same time, don’t wait for opportunities to fall into your lap. Get out there and make your-self available. Watch God do great things through you. Be a light and make a difference in the world where God has placed you.

YOU HAVE A particular race that God has set before you. It is a spiritual race that has to do with the divine destiny God has planned for you to fulfill. The Bible says you are to run your race and to finish your course (2 Tim 4:7). In other words, you are to fulfill God’s plan and purpose for your own life. You are not to run someone else’s race or finish their course. God has set a dif-ferent course for each of us.

Lay Aside Every WeightHow do you run your race in a way that will cause the plan of

God to be fulfilled in your life? Hebrews 12:1 says to, “lay aside every weight, and the sin which doth so easily beset us, and let us run with patience the race that is set before us.” The Living Bible gives a clearer picture of what it means to “lay aside every weight and sin.”

HEBREWS 12:1 (TLB)1 Since we have such a huge crowd of men of faith watching us from the grandstands, let us strip off anything

that slows us down or holds us back, and especially those sins that wrap themselves so tightly around our feet and trip us up; and let us run with patience the particular race that God has set before us.

Think about the clothes a runner wears in an Olympic race. He doesn’t run with an overcoat or with all his street clothes on. That would slow him down. It’s the same way in the spiritual realm. Sin will slow you down, trip you up, and prevent you from running your race. There are other things in this life that are not necessarily wrong, but they will slow you down. They will hinder you from growing spiritually and fulfilling God’s purposes in your life.

Notice Hebrews 12:1 says you are the one who must strip off the weights and sins that hold you back. The Holy Spirit, your Helper, dwells within you to give you the power and ability to obey God (John 14:26 AMP). But God is not going to pull off your “overcoat”—those weights and sins that slow you down—and lay it aside for you. You are going to have to do it.

God doesn’t want our race to be difficult and burdensome. The difficulties we face are not God’s yoke on us. They are often the result of failing to strip off everything that would hinder us.

Run With PatienceWe can also make our way difficult and hinder our spiritual

growth if we do not run our race with patience. It is easy to become impatient in our desire to see God’s plans and purposes fulfilled in our lives. For example, we can become so time conscious. Many

times when we hear from the Lord regarding His plan for us, we want it to be fulfilled immediately. But we need to learn patience as we run our race.

Jesus told me once when He appeared to me in a vision, “I’d rather you were too slow than too fast when you are trying to fol-low my leading. At least when you’re behind Me, you can still see Me out ahead of you. But if you’re too fast and jump out ahead of Me, you won’t be able to see Me any longer, and you’ll get off track.”

Our race is often like a relay race where the runner races until he reaches a certain station. Then he hands the baton to the next runner. In the same way, there are often different stages to the Christian race. However, God has a timing for each of the stages. Often, our obedience determines how long the time is between one stage and the next.

Preparing for His PurposesMany times people hear from God regarding the next stage in

their race and assume they are supposed to act right away on what they heard. Many times, however, they are not ready or they have not fully prepared themselves as they should. When they step out to do what God told them, it doesn’t work out right, and they fall on their faces. God has a way, but He also has timing. And to move out of God’s timing is to move out of His will.

Someone might say, “Will things ever change? I know God is preparing me, and I want to be faithful. It seems that I’ve been in this place of preparation for a long time. Will it ever be different?” Just continue to trust God with all your heart. Don’t try to figure out how and when God is going to fulfill His plan for you. As you pray, He will reveal each step you need to take.

You may not come into the full potential of what God has prepared for you tomorrow or next month. Be faithful to prepare yourself and rely on the Holy Spirit’s leading. As you do this, you will step into what God has planned for you. And if God hasn’t

specifically spoken to your heart regarding His plans for your fu-ture, then just stay put where you are. Be faithful to what He has told you to do with a joyful heart.

Strip off everything that would hinder you from obeying God. Then run your race with your eyes set on the goal—the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus (Phil. 3:14). Fulfilling God’s DreamARE YOU FULFILLING your dreams? The Merriam-Webster’s Collegiate Dictionary, Eleventh Edition defines dream as “a strongly desired goal or purpose; something that fully satisfies a wish.”

Thinking back to my childhood, those dreams involved natural desires, as well as God’s desires. I accepted Christ as my Savior when I was four. From that moment, I intensely desired to follow God’s plan for my life. I looked to Him and continue to look to Him for the dreams He has for me. Yet, I had personal dreams too.

I dreamed of being married. And I knew it was God’s will to marry someone who was called to the ministry. I dreamed of having a boy and a girl. I dreamed of getting my driver’s license so I wouldn’t have to depend on others. I dreamed of vacationing in Hawaii.

Often our dreams are about experiencing a better life or achieving greater things. It’s great to have personal goals and dreams. However, the most important dream we can attain is the will of God for our lives.

Jeremiah 29:11 (NLT) says, “ ‘For I know the plans I have for you,’ says the Lord. ‘They are plans for good and not for disaster, to give you a future and a hope.’ ” When you begin living God’s dream, it will change your life and others. One of my favorite Bible stories is about Joseph. He experienced a dream he did not understand and that took years to come to pass.

Let’s look at Joseph’s dream.

GENESIS 37:3–11 (NLT)3 Jacob loved Joseph more than any of his other children because Joseph had been born to him in his old age. So one day Jacob had a special gift made for Joseph—a beautiful robe.4 But his brothers hated Joseph because their father loved him more than the rest of them. They couldn’t say a kind word to him.5 One night Joseph had a dream, and when he told his brothers about it, they hated him more than ever.6 “Listen to this dream,” he said.7 “We were out in the field, tying up bundles of grain. Suddenly my bundle stood up, and your bundles all gathered around and bowed low before mine!”8 His brothers responded, “So you think you will be our king, do you? Do you actually think you will reign over us?” And they hated him all the more because of his dreams and the way he talked about them.9 Soon Joseph had another dream, and again he told his brothers about it. “Listen, I have had another dream,” he said. “The sun, moon, and eleven stars bowed low before me!”10 This time he told the dream to his father as well as to his brothers, but his father scolded him. “What kind of dream is that?” he asked. “Will your mother and I and your brothers actually come and bow to the ground before you?”

11 But while his brothers were jealous of Joseph, his father wondered what the dreams meant.

The story of the Israelites being saved from starvation and later being led out of Egyptian captivity began with a dream God gave to Joseph. Was it easy for Joseph as he followed the dream? No, but I believe that if we could ask him what kept him going through his trials, he would tell us “The dream.”

Look at all of the things Joseph endured before the dream came to pass. He was thrown into a pit and sold into slavery. He was accused of taking another man’s wife and placed in prison, seemingly forgotten. What kept him in those dire circumstances? The dream that had been placed in him by God.

What dream has God given you? You may have become discouraged by circumstances and put that dream on the shelf. Perhaps you’ve made wrong decisions and have the mentality that your decisions have shattered your dreams forever.

God wants to release you from the prison of doubt, grief, and shame. He wants you to pick up that God-given dream again. He is the God of second chances. You must refuse to allow

wounds of the past to sabotage the promise of the future. Look to God, and He will open doors of opportunity and give you the ability to fulfill what He has planned for you.

We all have cares in this life that we are tempted to worry about. But the Bible tells us in 1 Peter 5:7 to cast (or throw) all of our cares upon the Lord. Now, when it comes to throwing off cares, there are three different kinds of people: the Yo-Yos, the Boomerangs, and the Hot Potatoes. The Yo-Yos are the folks who throw off their cares, but they still have a string attached and pull their cares right back to themselves. The Boomerangs throw off their cares, too, but they plan on their cares returning back to them and, sure enough, they always do. But the Hot Potatoes know that if they hold their cares long they’ll get burned, so they are quick to throw off their cares and keep them off. Remember this: If YOU hold on to YOUR cares . . . JESUS can’t!
