A Banner Year for Iowa at the JNHE!

Olympic athletes may be about to “go for the gold”, but the 900-plus exhibitors at this year’s Junior

National Hereford Expo in Madison, Wisconsin, were after the banners – and eight of the red beauties came

home to Iowa! One of the stars of “A Hereford Scene in 2016” was Payton Vogel of Hartley (pictured above), who captured two of the most prestigious awards – Premier Exhibitor and Premier Junior Breeder – on the

strength of a string of bred and owned cattle that placed no lower than third in class and earned three reserve division titles.

Another homebred success story was written in the steer show, where Nick and Austin Deppe of

Maquoketa gained the grand championship on a calf that Austin bred. Libby Anderlik, Dayton, followed a similar

plot line by taking a division title in the bred and owned heifer show, while Nicole Petersen, DeWitt, made it to the “red carpet” with a division winner in the horned owned heifer show.

In addition to the banners, Iowa exhibitors had 10 class winners and also excelled in various contests

during the weeklong event that saw a record 1,666 entries.

Junior National coverage continues on page 3. Complete results will be printed in the September issue of Hereford World.

T.R. Putz of Otley and his steer, “Benny” have waged a successful show campaign this

season, winning the Iowa Beef Expo and the IJHA

Preview Show, placing second at the Junior National and most recently taking the reserve grand

champion market animal title at the Marion County Fair. Now they are headed to Des Moines for the

34th Annual Governor’s Charity Steer Show on Aug. 13.

The Hereford entry in the charity event is again sponsored by the Iowa Hereford Breeders

Association and will be shown for the third straight year by U.S. Senator Joni Ernst, who was chosen top

Supporters are still needed to help purchase

the steer at the auction following the show. Contact Anthony Monroe at [email protected] or 515-

Iowans Do Well in Contests The animals weren’t the only things judged

during the week. Iowa exhibitors participated in numerous contests and came home with quite a few

awards.

Katy Ruth of Iowa City topped the senior

division of the extemporaneous speech contest and entered the first place “people” and second place

“enhanced” pictures in the senior photography

contest.

A photo by Chesney Steenhoek, Maxwell, placed third in the “people” category of the peewee

division. The winning promotional poster in the junior division was created by T.R. Putz, Otley.

Peewee illustrated speech contestants were Jacey Orman, Bouton; Dax Putz, Otley; and Kennedy

Rife, Columbus Junction.

Mallory Espenscheid, Traer, survived several

elimination rounds in the showmanship competition to make the finals of the senior division, where the

top 10 had to prove themselves not only in the show arena but also in the fitting chute. She placed fifth

out of more than 100 original entrants.

It was in the sales arena where the Iowans

really shone! In the team contest, teams “sell” any product that is related to agriculture to a panel of

judges by promoting the item in a creative way.

The two fine young gentlemen pictured above, Jarrett Orman of Bouton and T.R. Putz of

Otley, donned jackets, jeans and boots and walked

off with first place in the junior team sales competition.

A sister competition to team sales, the

individual sales contest allows an individual junior to sell a product to a panel using visual aids and

salesmanship skills.

Iowa competitors proved quite persuasive, with Addison Wall, Pleasantville (front row, far left)

winning the peewee division; Abbey Pals of Indianola (back row, second from left) placing third

among intermediates; and Katy Ruth (back row, far

right) taking the senior division title.

Report County Champions

The IHBA will again provide special awards

for juniors who win their county fair Hereford show. If you exhibited a champion Hereford steer or heifer

at your county fair – or if you sold a calf that was a champion Hereford at a county fair, be sure to

remind your Extension office to submit the

“Champion Hereford Report” to IHBA administrative secretary Becky Simpson by October 1. Forms are

available at www.iowahereford.org, the IHBA’s website.

Hereford Tour is Sept. 3 Make plans to spend at least part of Labor

Day weekend in eastern Iowa. The 2016 Iowa Hereford Tour will take place on Saturday, Sept. 3,

and will include the association’s annual meeting

and election of four new directors.

The schedule has not been finalized, but confirmed stops include Deppe Brothers,

Maquoketa; Petersen Herefords, DeWitt; and R&R

Cattle, Wilton. Complete details will be available at the State Fair.

Expo Sale Deadline Approaching

Members wishing to have cattle considered for the 2017 Iowa Select Hereford Sale at the Iowa

Beef Expo are reminded that the nomination deadline is August 20. All cattle must be

nominated, screened and accepted to be included in

the sale offering. A nomination form can be found elsewhere in this newsletter.

Wall Joins IHBA Board

At its June meeting, the IHBA board of directors appointed Patrick Wall of Pleasantville to fill

the unexpired term of Scott Amendt, who resigned

in April.

Docility is Focus of Fall Ad

The IHBA will run a half-page ad in the

September issue of Livestock Plus, emphasizing the docility of Herefords as an asset for youth projects.

Breeders wishing to take advantage of this promotion to advertise their own herd in adjoining

space may do so by contacting Mike Sorensen,

[email protected]; ph: 641-745-7949 by Aug. 10.

New Page Added to Website

A new page for “Hereford Cattle Wanted”

has been added to the IHBA website (www.iowahereford.org). Accessible from the home

page, this feature is intended to provide information on Hereford and Hereford-influenced cattle that

people are looking to purchase. If you get a call for

cattle that you can’t supply, please send the information to Marilyn Lenth at [email protected]

to share with your fellow breeders. Please note: This is not a place to advertise cattle for sale.

Welcome, New Members! Brincks Farm – Matthew & Janette Brincks,

Fredericksburg, IA

Obituaries Jean Munsinger, widow of Hall of Fame

breeder Luther Munsinger, passed away June 3 at the age of 87.

A multi-talented farm wife, she helped Luther build their MM Herefords into a nationally-

recognized prefix that was synonymous with high quality cattle that performed equally well in the

showring and on the farm. Survivors include two

daughters, Carol Good and Linda Ahlquist; one son, Merril; seven grandchildren and eight great-

grandchildren.

Richard “Dick” St. Clair, 68, of Jefferson died June 28. Farming was his first love, but he later

pursued other agricultural passions – graduating

from the Worldwide School of Auctioneering, starting an alfalfa hay cooperative and investing in

top-of-the-line Hereford show cattle.

Dick served on the Greene County Fair

Board while his sons were in 4-H and later assisted his grandchildren as they entered their own 4-H

projects. He was ever-present in the cattle barn as they showed their steers and heifers in both the

county and Iowa State Fairs.

He is survived by his wife, Rosalee; two

sons, Michael and Rodney; stepchildren Teresa Ross and Christopher Graham; 12 grandchildren and one

great-grandchild.

Directory Planning Underway The 2017-18 IHBA directory will debut in

early 2017. Now is the time to start planning your

ad and taking pictures. Ad rates will remain basically the same as in previous years; “prime

pages” will again be sold by the claim sale method. Look for complete information in the September

newsletter.

If you have good vertical color photos that

you would like considered for the directory cover, please e-mail them to [email protected].

Looking for Board Candidates

If you are interested in running for a 3-year term on the IHBA board of directors, contact Mike

Simpson, 515-833-2991, [email protected]; or Charls

Rife, 563-506-37511, [email protected]. Election will be held Sept. 3 at the annual meeting.
