Educa on programming is a core purpose of virtually every trade and professional associa‐
on, and MCABC is no different. So when the topic of successful educa on programming for
resource‐challenged mechanical contrac ng organiza ons was presented at MCA America’s
recent Associa on Execu ve Council Conference, I listened carefully.
Robin Cowper, educa on director for MCA Western Washington (MCAWW), was the confer‐
ence presenter on the topic of educa on. She knows what she’s talking about: MCAWW
grew its educa onal program from a mere 28 students in 1999 to more than 528 in 2014.
Robin began her presenta on by canvassing the room and determined that every MCA in
a endance offered some form of educa onal programming with annual expenditures ranging
from less than $5,000 to well above $50,000. When the associa ons shared the benefits of
their educa on programs, it was agreed that educa on makes for be er contractors – the
industry bar is raised with higher standards that result from a be er educated workforce.

While Rod Moini spends his days fixing leaky pipes and clearing
drains, he likes to use his spare me to help struggling kids and people
with disabili es. The Trinity Plumbing‐Hea ng‐Gas plumber and
service technician grew up in a single mother household himself and
was drawn to being a Big Brother for the Big Brothers of Greater
Vancouver four years ago. Not content to volunteer for just one
organiza on, Rod, 24, has now also volunteered with Interfit – a
charity that allows the disabled to enjoy outdoor recrea on in

Big news for service contractors: BOMA Canada has agreed to promote the Mechanical Service Contractors of Canada's National Certification Program to its members. As a result, building owners and managers across the country will have lists of pre-qualified companies they can draw from to perform work on their buildings.
Your job: Get certified. Undoubtedly there will be a big rush among MSCC members to be among the first to earn this important certification. The sooner your company earns its credentials, the greater the competitive advantage it will have over those that haven't.
Click here to learn more about this MSCC-exclusive certification program, call 613-232-0492, or email Dale Sharkey.

Train together and the community is strengthened – even
among compe tors – through collabora on. Volunteerism, the
lifeblood of any successful associa on, is also boosted. Educa‐
on can serve as a gateway to the associa on and its services,
a rac ng new members with discount pricing and specialized
programming.
At MCABC, we offer a number of popular courses but we would
like to offer you more. Challenges persist in areas such as course
content and development, instructor availability and training,
facili es and loca on. We’re always working to improve and
MCA Western Washington generously shared five points that
should help us along the improvement road:
1. Content and delivery of educa onal programming. Content
must be unique, relevant and streamlined with clear objec‐
ves and a targeted audience. Success lies with an engag‐
ing delivery combined with hands‐on, competency‐based
experiences.
2. Next we need to know there is full board support, adequate
staff resources, and an instructor base to support the con‐
tent to be delivered.
3. Infrastructure is cri cal and must include the physical class‐
room space with adequate resources, a comprehensive
database to record, track and monitor par cipa on, and
access to material produc on facili es. In the case of
MCABC, we also require the ability to take the training on
the road and make informa on accessible, whether
through distance learning or online courses.
4. Marke ng the brand consistently targets expecta ons, cre‐
ates user familiarity and
raises the success rate of
bandwagon adver sing
and personal phone
calls. However, it is chal‐
lenging to reach those
who may benefit most.
MCABC strives to do this
by communica ng with
prospec ve a endees typically found deeper in the mem‐
ber company. Use of social media has helped us spread the
word about our educa onal offerings to more members.
5. Finally, and this is one of our setbacks in recent years, there
is a need for public recogni on of everyone who supports
the programming: students, graduates, instructors, and of
course volunteers, including the board of directors. So to
our champions, I thank you!
MCABC con nues to search for accessible and relevant courses.
In addi on, we need to get our message to the right people.
We need instructors and we need to train across the province.
In order to develop and sustain the desired training curriculum,
MCABC needs an ac ve membership pressing for innova on
and content. Please help us offer the courses you need and
want by communica ng with us and spreading the word with
your colleagues.
Please have a look at our current course catalogue as we do
offer lots of great courses. If you have addi onal educa onal
requirement for your mechanical contrac ng business, please
let us know at [email protected]. We will do our best to deliver.
