ALL MEMBERSHIP MATTERS!

What is membership anyway? Merriam-Webster dictionary tells us it

is: “The state of belonging to or being a part of a group or an

organization.” While being part of a group is certainly true, it is only a

part of the real definition. Membership matters because the “pool” of

members is the only resource the group has to fulfill its mission,

whatever that is. Membership matters because that “pool” of members

must produce, in most groups, volunteers that are willing to do the

work of the organization. If the organization has no work to

accomplish, then there is no need for the group. Membership matters

in the Fleet Reserve Association because of the important work that it

needs to accomplish. Your membership matters because the FRA needs

your assistance in recruiting and doing the work necessary to

accomplish the goals we set. Those are based on our core values of

Loyalty, Protection and Service to our Shipmates and the United States

MADAM PREZ’S TIDBIT

Hello Auxiliary members, I hope you are staying cool with all this hot weather we are having and if you are traveling anywhere please be safe. Welcome Crystal Stella and Nilda Fowler to our unit. Congratulations to Linda Cox she was presented at the meeting with her 10 year pin. A farewell to our member Tyler Malmgren who will be going off to college. August 4 at 6:00 p.m. there will be a cake cutting ceremony for the US Coast Guard Birthday. The golf tournament will be on August 13. Congratulations to Paul McHugh who won the Rocking chair and a congratulations to Gale Nathan she won the gift certificate for the Goose Creek recreation center. A bin has been placed in the bar area at the home for the donations of school supplies for the Teachers Closet. We made several motions, one was to buy raffle tickets for the South East regional presidents project, to split the cost with the branch for the veterans day parade float, to give $20 for our hospital fund. We also made a motion to help the VFW to purchase tables and chairs for the homeless veterans to be used when we give them a luncheon or dinner at the holidays. There are plans being made for a party in celebration for marking our 10th year anniversary, we have allotted $125 to help with the cost. If your loved one was buried at sea the VA will provide a headstone, if anyone is interested let us know and we will give you the information. Our next meeting will be on Tuesday, August 16 at 6:30 PM so come on out and join us, we can use some fresh ideas. Merry Widows' luncheon will be on Tuesday, August 9 at 11:30 in the Low country home. The unit luncheon will also be held at the home on August 16 at 11:30. The Merry Widows Luncheon will be on August 9,

at 11:30 a.m. at the FRA Home.

HOME COMMITTEE CHAIRMAN

From Home Committee Chairman Welcome to August 2016 Shipmates, and Ladies.

We have a lot going on this month, so jump on board and let's party.

The biggie this month will, of course, be the 10th anniversary party of

the Home. This party will be on Saturday the 20th of August. This will

be a dinner dance with a group called the Double Naught Spies. I hear

from sources that they are a real good band and play the type of music

that folks of our caliber like to hear. We will be featuring a very special

Prime Rib dinner and all the trimmings that go with it. Tickets will only

be $15.00 dollars a person thanks to the Branch and Unit subsidizing

the total cost. On the 4th of August we will have a cake cutting

ceremony to celebrate the US Coast Guard's birthday. Would love to

see a big turnout for these guys, and they are going to get as many of

their folks down as possible.

We have started replenishing the building fund, so business is looking

up for the Home, and it's all due to you, the members of the Low

Country Home and especially the staff and volunteer managers of the

Home. So, let's keep it up. I am so proud of our members and staff for

the support and work put into the Home. One thing I believe we can do

better, is the participation in the Field Days at the Home. Normally, we

have a field day on the Saturday prior to the Home Committee

meeting. If we could get more than 8-10 members in there, I believe

we could knock out quite a few items and get a lot done in just two or

three hours. Think about it folks. You don't have to do the field day

every time, but if we had enough people show up, you wouldn't have

to. Well, that's about all I have for the month, so I'll just step down from

my soap box and say, "Come On Down to the Fleet and Let's Party".

Come on down to the meetings (Branch, Unit and Home), let your

voice be heard and just mingle with old friends. Fridays, Scotch

doubles. Wednesdays, build your own pizza. Drawing on Tuesdays

and a whole lotta other stuff that I probably should mention, but cain't,

cuz I'm getting old and I just plain forgot.

Thanks,

Nate

Home Committee Chairman

NATIONAL MAILING LIST

Shipmates, if you do not want any mailings from our National

Office either by regular mail or electronic mail, you can call

National Headquarters and they will check the block on your

profile to stop these mailings.

BRANCH 269 MENTORING PROGRAM Beginning on 1 July, the FRA Low Country Branch 269 Mentoring Program will be changing from a few volunteer mentors for

new shipmates to having the individual that recruited the shipmate being that persons mentor. If a shipmate is recruited by a unit member, then the mentor for that shipmate will be the Branch Secretary. Each new member will get from the Branch President a welcome aboard letter, brochure and blank application to encourage them to sign up new members. Mentor should then call new shipmate to invite them to our meetings and events at the home.

From the Branch Secretary:

If you change your address, phone number or email address please contact the Branch Secretary, John Tharp at 843-709-

8520 or email [email protected] concerning the change. You may also contact one of the Home Managers (Larry Pepper

or Don Mucheck) or leave a not in the pass down log to change any information. Many members change information

but the Branch is not notified, therefore, you will not receive important information on upcoming events.

Communications is vital to ensure all members receive information on events happening at the fleet, events occurring

in the community concerning the Navy, Marine Corps and Coast Guard and Two Bells Ceremonies for our departed

shipmates.

Change of Bylaw Section 401 Paragraph 2 change:

The paid employees of FRA Low Country Home, are ineligible to serve as a member of the Governing Body. This rule is intended to maintain a

distinct separation of those operating and handling of the Home from those over-seeing the operation and auditing of the funds of the Home. This

pertains to PNP Don Mucheck, Larry Pepper and Home Committee Chair, Nat Nathan. This is the first reading. Second reading will be during the

August meeting.

NOTIFYING THE BRANCH WHEN A SHIPMATE PASSES AWAY Our Chaplin, Bobbi Sutton is very good about searching for the passing of shipmates on the internet and

arranging for our Two Bell Ceremony with the family. We want to honor our departed shipmate but

sometimes we don’t get the notification from the family until there isn’t enough time to arrange the

ceremony and get the word out to all our members. We are just requesting our branch members as they

make their final arrangements to advise their wives or husbands to make a note in their wishes to notify

our branch Chaplin as soon as possible about their passing so we can arrange for this honor to be

performed at the church or funeral.

DO YOU HAVE A SEA STORY OR FIELD STORY TO TELL?

Every Sailor, Marine or Coastie has a memorable event or two that they love to tell to another shipmate at the bar or dinner table and

we would love to hear those stories if you wish to tell them. Please send us a story or two of your best memories and we will print them in

our newsletter and read one at a monthly meeting. Write a short paragraph or two and e-mail them to [email protected] with the

subject line SEA/FIELD STORY FROM (NAME). You can also mail the stories to our home address (FRA Low Country Branch 269, Attn:

Laurie Bailey, 99 Wisteria Road, Goose Creek, SC 29445) or leave in the pass down log at the FRA Home in an envelope marked Attn: Laurie

Bailey. These stories are history and we want to honor your memories by preserving them.
