Brother Knights,
I hope everyone’s
summer is going well.
By this time each
administration should
have sat down together
and laid out a game
plan for the new
fraternal Year. I know
its vacation season but
we can never take time
off to improve our
councils, our districts,
and our diocese. Within
the State Council
quality programming
and membership
recruitment never take
a vacation. August is a
perfect time to conduct
a Parish Drive and
Open House. First
Degrees can be
scheduled in
conjunction with the
Assumption of Mary,
Fr. McGivney his
birthday or date of
passing.
The 1st General
Program Report period
ends in about 5 weeks
on September 5th. Be
sure your new account
is set up on the new
State Website and you
are prepared to enter
your program reports.
Remember
programming it's not
rocket science. A well
run small program will
be awarded the same
program points as a
monumental activity.
District Deputies are
required to conduct a
1st Degree each month.
That makes 82 first
degrees each month.
Our Degree Page on the
website should be
“Busting’ Out” and
overflowing with degree
information. We will
need each of those
degrees to be productive
so everyone may help
us reach our goal of
3,000 new members and
250 new members per
month. Why not plan to
conduct your degree
this month in Honor of
Mary’s Assumption into
Heaven.
Just a few reminders.
If you have not seen in
your Measure Up check
for the April - May 2015
collection please do as
soon as possible. The
Measure Up Grant
Checks should begin to
go back to the councils
sometime this month
just after the close of
Mission Statement We as men of the Knights of
Columbus, men of faith, are
called through Baptism to
grow and increase in faith.
We are thereby summoned
to serve as witnesses to that
faith in our daily lives, in
the lives of our families, and
in the lives of others
throughout our
communities.
Mission Objective Fostering men united in a
faith that will continue the
growth of Fr. McGivney’s
dream ensuring the spread
of Columbianism; becoming
more visible through the
good works of Charity,
Unity, and Fraternity;
creating an atmosphere
which encourages and calls
all Catholic men to serve
with their Brothers.

the Supreme Convention.
State per capita billings were
sent to all Financial
Secretaries in early June and
the per capita dues amounts
are due now. If you have not
paid your State per capita
please make arrangements to
do so as soon as possible. A
special thank goes out to all of
the councils who have already
mailed in their check.
All the Super Cash Bonanza
Rebate checks should be
written and sent to Financial
Secretary of record by now.
Thank you to everyone who
worked to make this program a
huge success.
Football Frenzy should be in
full swing by now. We need to
sell as many tickets as
possible. No ticket should be
left on the table. I’m positive
that 58,000 Knights should be
able to sell 36,000 tickets. This
year we have made the
program more of a contest and
have added some new
incentives. A diocese must sell
an increase of 10% over last
year’s sales. The #1 diocese will
earn an additional $1.oo per
ticket sold. The #2 diocese will
earn an additional $0.50 per
ticket and the #3 diocese will
earn an additional $0.25 per
ticket. Remember a State per
capita increase at the next
state convention is looming.
Increased sales resulting in a
$50,000.00 increase in State
Council profits will negate a
State per capita increase at the
next State Convention. God
Bless you with your efforts. It's
a win - win situation for all of
us.
“Town Hall” meetings have
been posted on the State
Website Calendar. Anyone
from anywhere is welcome at
any time to come to any one of
the “Town Hall” meetings. All
meetings will begin at 7 p.m.
and last for about 90 minutes
or so. The meetings are open to
anyone as long as there a
member in good standing. A
new Knight with no experience
to an Honorary Life seasoned
veteran.
The State Officers and
delegates will be at the
Supreme Convention in
Philadelphia next week from
Monday, August 2nd through
Thursday, August 6th. Many of
the convention events such as
daily mass, the State’s Dinner,
and the Supreme Knights
opening remarks on the state
of the Order are shown live on
EWTN TV. See your local
carrier for details.
Our Supreme Council has
introduced the “Fifth Sunday”
Rosary Program. Councils are
being asked to pray a rosary
before mass on the fifth
Sunday of the month. There
are four of these that occur,
one each calendar quarter.
Report that rosary to the State
Church Director during the
appropriate reporting period.
Please mark your calendars for
the Ohio State Council Retreat
at the Sts. Peter and Paul
Retreat Centre in Newark,
Ohio. The retreat will take
place the weekend of February
5th and 6th. A minimal fee for
the overnight event will be
required. Reservations and
more information will come to
you in the near future.
Please get in the habit of using
your Fraternal Leader Success
Planner. Each month in a
calendar format important
dates and deadlines are listed.
The opposing page has a list of
reminder notes and expected
accomplishments for the
current month and the month
to come. It is a great tool for
success. Take every advantage
of this Fraternal Planning
guide.
Our theme “Through Him,
With Him, In Him” is taken to
task at every sacrifice of the
mass. Take this theme to
heart. Give up everything you
do for the honor and glory of
God and our potential for
success just becomes
immeasurable.
God Bless Brothers, have a
good month.

STATE CHAPLAIN
With the recent Supreme Court decision on Marriage, I thought that I
would remind all of us what
Marriage, as defined by the Catholic
Church, is. Instead of becoming angry at the Court’s decision, let us
inform everyone of what marriage is
in the “eyes of God” from the Catholic Church. From the
Catechism of the Catholic Church,
Marriage is:
1601 “The matrimonial
covenant, by which a man
and a woman establish between themselves a
partnership of the whole of
life, is by its nature ordered toward the good of the
spouses and the procreation
and education of offspring; this covenant between
baptized persons has been
raised by Christ the Lord to
the dignity of a sacrament.”
There are many who say that if two
people love each other than that is marriage. The problem with this view
is that marriage involves two types of
love: agape and eros.
In the above definition the agape love
of self-sacrifice [a dying to self] is for
the good of the spouses. This giving of one’s self for the other is the love
that Christ showed to His Church, His
Bride, by his dying on the cross for her. Spouses are to give freely of
themselves and sacrifice their selves
for the other. This is the mutual caring and sharing for each other.
The eros love is the expression of the
agape love in the flesh. Created as physical beings, man and woman by
their differences complement each
other in their self-donation of their physical self in the creation of a new
life; procreative. The two physically
become one in their sexual intercourse with each other; unitive.
The sexual act between husband and
wife is to be both unitive and
procreative according to nature. The Catechism of the Catholic Church
tells us:
2366 Fecundity is a gift, an
end of marriage, for
conjugal love naturally
tends to be fruitful. A child does not come from outside
as something added on to
the mutual love of the spouses, but springs from
the very heart of that mutual
giving, as its fruit and fulfillment. So the Church,
which is “on the side of
life,” teaches that “it is
necessary that each and every marriage act remain
ordered per se to the
procreation of human life.” [Humane Vitae 11]
“This particular doctrine,
expounded on numerous
occasions by the Magisterium, is based on
the inseparable connection,
established by God, which
man on his own initiative may not break, between the
unitive significance and the
procreative significance which are both inherent to
the marriage act.” [Humane
Vitae 12]
Well, some will say that new life can
be created without the self-donation
of the two becoming one flesh, physically. Science has created the
means to create life in the laboratory.
Other means can be done with persons who are not the husband or
wife. The Bride of Christ, the
Church, tells us that if an act of self-
donation in the flesh that is not unitive and/or procreative, then it is
not to be done. If a third or more
persons have to be involved in the creation of new life, then it is not of
the Natural and Divine Law and is not
to be done by anyone. Only a man and a woman can naturally and
divinely create a new human life.
There are some websites that can help us to learn more about marriage and
our Catholic Faith. You can visit
catholic.com [Catholic Answers],

or vatican.va [The Holy See].

Blessed Louis
and Zelie
Martin This couple is best known as the
parents of St. Therese of Lisieux
(the Little Flower), but they are
models of holiness in their own
right. They are only the second
married couple to be beatified.
Louis was born in 1823 in
Bordeaux. When his hope of
entering religious life was thwarted
he became a watchmaker. Zelie
Guerin was born in 1831. She, too,
hoped to become a religious, but
eventually understood that it was
not God’s will. She became a
successful lace-maker.
Louis and Zelie met in Alencon and
were married in 1858 after a three-
month courtship. For almost a year
the couple lived as celibates, but
the advice of a confessor changed
their minds and they decided to
raise as many children as possible
for the glory of God. Zelie gave
birth to nine children, five of whom
entered religious life.
The family lived a comfortable
lifestyle, but they also suffered the
loss of four children at an early age
and had to deal with a rebellious
daughter. Their devotion never
wavered, however. The couple lived
modestly, reached out to the poor
and the needy, and led daily
prayers in the household. St.
Therese would later write: “God
gave me a father and a mother
who were more worthy of
heaven than of earth.”
In 1877, at age 45, Zelie
Martin died of breast cancer.
Louis and his daughters moved
to Lisieux. Gradually his
daughters left to enter the
convent. Despite his loneliness
he said: “It is a great, great
honor for me that the Good
Lord desires to take all of my
children. If I had anything better, I
would not hesitate to offer it to
him.” Louis died in 1894 after
suffering greatly, including a three-
year stay in a psychiatric hospital.
Louis and Zelie Martin were
beatified by Pope Benedict XVI in
2008. Their feast day is July 12.
For reflection
In a Christian marriage spouses
strive to lead each other to holiness.
Louis and Zelie Martin show how a
marriage not only benefits the
couple, but their children, the
Church and society.
Taken From: USCCB “For Your
Marriage”
(Vatican Radio) 26 June 2015
Pope Francis approved on Saturday
the decrees allowing for the
canonization of Louis and Zelie
Martin, the parents of St. Therese
of the Child Jesus (of Lisieux).
The Holy Father approved the
decrees allowing Louis and Zelie
Martin to be canonized during the
Ordinary Consistory in the
Apostolic Palace of the Vatican.
The couple will be the first to be
canonized together as husband and
wife, giving testimony to their
‘extraordinary witness of conjugal
and familial spirituality’, said
Cardinal Angelo Amato, the Prefect
for the Congregation for the Causes
of the Saints.
As Cardinal Amato presented the
soon-to-be canonized couple to the
Holy Father, he said that their lives
‘positively impacted their historical
context through witness to the
Gospel for the renewal of the face of
the earth’
The Prefect also emphasized their
‘exemplary life of faith, dedication
to ideal values united to a constant
realism, and persistent attention to
the poor’.
Louis Martin (1823–1894) and Zelie
Guerin (1831–1877) were blessed
with nine children, four of whom
died in infancy. The remaining five
girls all entered religious life, one of
whom is St. Therese of Lisieux.

So, you say you don’t get guys at
your meetings any more. Nobody
wants to do anything. You have to
beg to get guys to help at council
functions. Your membership
numbers are not what they should
be. Your presence in the parish has
dwindled. Your treasury is empty.
Sound familiar? Well, there’s a cure
for that. It’s called revitalization.
Sometimes what a council needs is
a shot in the arm. Council
revitalization can be just what the
doctor ordered. It’s not a difficult
process and it doesn’t take forever.
Your Diocesan membership
Director, District Deputy and your
general agent are there to help you
succeed and grow – all you need to
do is ask.
If what you’ve done for years isn’t
working; it’s time to change, to
shake things up; to get the fraternal
juices flowing again. That doesn’t
mean you’re doing things wrong,
but if what you’re doing isn’t
working – change what you’re
doing.
Call your District Deputy and ask
him to help. DDs love this stuff.
He’ll contact the Diocesan
Membership Director and the
general agent. These gentlemen
(most of them are anyhow) will
meet with you and the Pastor to
plan the rebirth of your shiny, new,
state of the art council. You’ll have
to beat prospective members away
with a stick. The heavens will open,
the choirs will sing and multiple
stars
will fall
from the
sky.
You say
it can’t
be that
easy.
Anything worth doing takes some
effort, but you are not alone. The
Order is behind you. The State
team is standing right beside you.
Your Diocesan team is there for
you. The next time you talk with
your District Deputy ask him how
to go about cranking up your
council. If you don’t get appositive
response, call me directly at

RETENTION Mike Jordon and Bill Wirtz
The State Tour weekends have
come to an end with Bill Wirtz-
West covering the East tour and
Mike Jordon- East coving the West
tour, this was a great way for both
of us to meet our brother Knights
that we would not normally meet.
July 1st not only kicked off our New
Fraternal year it also brought us
new changes from Supreme
concerning Withdrawals and
Membership. During the weekends
we talked about the new
Withdrawal Conservation Program
of 60 days before a member will be
officially withdrawn. We must
remember that we are a Fraternal
Order and that our members are
very important to us.
We need to stress that our members
are important and some points that
all Grand Knights and Financial
Secretaries must remember are as
follows:
1. Withdrawal letter must
be from the member
themselves and not a
form letter that the
member signed.
2. The Council Retention
Team should contact the
member before the
letter is sent in to see
why and how they can
help their brother
remain a Knight.
With the points above being stated
that brings us to this month’s
feature program:
Form a Retention Committee:
This committee is tried and true if
put into action. An effective
retention committee would contact
every member 2-3 times a year, the
new and seasoned alike.
Recommend the Deputy Grand
Knight chair the Committee while
leading an active group of
recognized council members, i.e. the
Trustees and the Financial
Secretary. The committee should be
trained, or mentored, in activities
commensurate with good
communications.

GENERAL SERVICE PROGRAMS
Brothers,
August is an exciting month, and a
busy one. With the Birthday of the
Venerable Michael J. McGivney’s on
the 12th, and then the Memorial of his
death on the 14th, have you
considered doing some type of
program to Honor Our Founder?
Family week is also at this time,
there are several programs, in the
State Program that will support a
Council program. The feast of The
Assumption of Mary is on August
15th, this would be a great way to
gather your Council and honor Our
Mother Mary at Mass.
Remember that to receive the Administration points, your Service
Personal Form #365 and the Council Audit Form #1295 is due on August
15. While getting these forms together for Supreme, consider ordering
your Coats for the Coats For Kids program, and the kit for the October
Church drive. On the weekend of August 29 & 30th consider having a
Corporate Communion.
On page 31 of the
“Through Him, With Him,
In Him” Program Book,
there is a section on
“Conducting A Successful
Program”, please review
this section to help your
Council Activity Directors
plan and achieve State
Honors and Star Council
awards.
When holding activities
for your Council or Parish
invite some non-members to see how well your council works with each
other, and enjoy doing these activities for others.
During Mass, when you hear the Priest say these words “Through Him,
With Him, In Him” is the time to renew your pledge given to our State
Deputy to grow your council, and activities.
Let’s make August Great!

GENERAL SERVICE PROGRAMS
CULTURE OF LIFE Gary Anderson
This is the best time of year for your
council pro-life chairman and com-
mittee to lay out the upcoming fra-
ternal year and plan the many,
critically important events and ac-
tivities that are coming up over the
course of this new fraternal year. If
you do not yet have a pro-life/
culture life/respect life committee,
now is the time to make it happen.
Every council is needed to do its
part in the cause for Life.
It did not take long after the U.S.
Supreme Court's June decision af-
firming same sex marriage for an-
other earth-shaking event to take
place: the release of undercover vid-
eos of top Planned Parenthood doc-
tors cavalierly discussing the killing
of unborn babies and the harvesting
of their organs for profit. We can
only hope and pray that federal and
state officials and legislators will
seize this opportunity to once and
for all strip away all public funding-
to the tune of $500 million per year-
from this most evil organization.
The 2015-2017 Culture of Life Ac-
tivities program has been updated
with a few brand new, timely, and
topical activities. One of them that
is of the utmost importance is Pro-
mote Teen Chastity, (Activity #52).
Never before, have our youngsters
been under such intense, ongoing,
diabolical attack as they are now
coming from many different direc-
tions such as music, social media,
TV, movies, etc.
The centerpiece of this activity is a
12-segment DVD program entitled,
Theology of the Body for Teens,
based on St. John Paul II's monu-
mental writing, Theology of the
Body, that focuses on the beauty of
purity and chastity. The program
has been adapted to teens to pro-
vide them with the real-world in-
struction and support they need as
they approach adult life and uses
John Paul's vision for love and life
to answer the tough questions kids
are asking about God, sex, and the
meaning of life. It is available in
both high school and middle school
editions.
The objective of this activity is very
simple: to provide a copy of the
DVD program to your parish and/or
parish school, with the permission
of your pastor or school principal.
The entire program can be pur-
chased for under $200. Details are
available on pages 67-68 of the Gen-
eral Program Book.
Finally, there are a couple of up-
coming events to be aware of and to
plan for. The National Day of Re-
membrance for Aborted Children
(Activity #50) is coming up on Sep-
tember 12. On that day, prayer vig-
ils are held at the gravesites of the
unborn or memorials to the unborn
all across the U.S. For a complete
list of gravesites/memorials around
Ohio, as well as program details,
visit the event website.
The fall 40 Days for Life cam-
paign (Activity #47), which runs
from September 23 to November 1
is just ahead as well. Be sure to con-
tact your local Right to Life group
for the location of your local cam-
paign and to schedule your council's
prayer time at the abortion facility.
And let's not forget the critically
important
Ultrasound Initiative campaign
(Activity #45) through which we
supply free, life-saving ultrasound
machines to qualified pregnancy
care centers. Please keep your eyes
and ears constantly on watch for
such centers in need of a machine.
CHURCH
Jeff Kiliany
As I mentioned briefly at all the
stops during the recent State Tour,
the Church Program offers numer-
ous suggestions to help tend to the
“Spiritual” needs of you council’s
membership. As men of Faith and
part of a CATHOLIC men’s organi-
zation, we should plan activities
that stress and nurture our Faith as
Catholic gentlemen. Activity #
2 ,”Religious Devotions,” and Activ-
ity #5, “Deepen Our Faith” have
several suggested activities that do
just that.
Some traditional activities that
many councils do every year that
could be included in Activity #2,
“Religious Devotions”, include:
Reciting the Rosary be-
fore meetings, Mass, for
a special intention or as
a special service
Corporate Communion
Conduct or participate
in Lenten Stations of
the Cross Services
The Knights of Colum-
bus Supreme Icon ser-
vices – The Holy Family
Icon will be shared with
Councils throughout the
State of Ohio during the
next 2 fraternal years
Additional activities that you may
consider:
The Silver Rose is cur-
rently making its way
around the State, host a
Service or participate as
a council at another
Service in your area.
Talk to your Chaplain
about holding a prayer
service such as the Lit-
urgy of The Hours, the
daily prayers of the
Church which are a
meditative dialogue on
the mystery of Christ,
using scripture and
prayer.

FAMILY Stewart Vetter
As we head into the dog days of
summer, thoughts begin to turn
toward kids and teachers returning
to school. This can be a very
stressful time for families as they
buy supplies, clothes, and pay
tuition. Many councils use this time
of year to donate to their Catholic
school tuition fund. But what about
where there isn't a school or the
parents choose public school? We
often forget these families may need
help because the CCD programs
often charge tuition too. Many of
these children are on the fringe of
not knowing their Catholic heritage
and CCD is their only exposure to
faith. We should be reaching extra
far for them because they are on the
verge of falling away from the
Church. Even a small donation to
help these struggling families who
want their children to know our
Catholic faith is helpful.
As the excitement and stress builds
towards school beginning, a family
picnic is a great end of summer
stress reliever. This is a great way to
have our K of C families interact and
relax. This is also a fantastic
candidate activity because his family
gets to know other K of C families
and the wives can become friends.
August is a good time to schedule
your memorial mass too. Set up the
date with your local parish, usually
in November, and begin getting
members to volunteer for the parts.
Ask the local fourth degree to
provide an honor guard. During
Mass, read the names of the
members that have passed in the
last year. If possible, have all your
members sit together. This is a great
show of brotherhood and fraternity
to potential members. If you have
arm bands or 3rd degree baldrics,
have the lector, ushers, and
Eucharistic ministers wear them so
everyone can see that the Knights of
Columbus is present in every part of
the parish.

so much: tweeting, blogging, texting,
live chatting, posting on Facebook
and other social networks, sharing
their views and opinions with the
world. They share their minds
instantly.
Social media gives you the
opportunity to make new
connections online. The world lies at
your fingertips. You can reach out to
a large number of users. Statistics
show that the total number of
Facebook users worldwide is 1.2
billion and that 98 percent of 18- to
24-year-olds use social media.
Social media evangelism is the new
frontline of evangelism, based on
Christ’s method to mingle with
people where they are, sympathize
with them, meet their needs, and
invite them to follow Jesus.
Our intention, every step of the way,
is to treat each visitor and contact as
a potential candidate. We take a
personal interest in their lives. We
take time to disciple a small group of
people and build
personal relationships.
These personal relationships
will form the bonds necessary to
create the community that brings
people back time and time again to
our social media evangelism
network.
This network goes beyond mere
digital relationships. Ultimately
every disciple you create will become
a real member, in a real church,
somewhere in his or her local
community and potential a member
of the Knights. This is the goal of
social media evangelism:
digital connections with real
disciples, leading to new
membership in circles, councils and
assemblies—worldwide.

ADMINISTRATION
My Brother Knights, as we continue the journey into this Fraternal Year,
proper Administrative Forms need to be submitted. If your council has
any roster changes throughout the year especially in regards to your
Grand Knight please submit the correction or addition on the appropriate
form. As always communication is the key to success in any endeavor.
Forms submitted to Supreme and copies to the State Council are a vital
component of this communication process.
Administration Forms are a requirement and their timing of submittal is
critical for Star council and Special Program awards in the individual
State Programs. Administration Forms should be submitted to the proper Supreme address and copies
whether paper or electronic should be submitted to the State Forms Chairman based on the Table
below:
Please utilize the Table above and the Forms Checklist provided in the General Program book on page
30. This checklist is an excellent tool to help you succeed this next year.
