Young minds gathered at Texas State Round Rock Cam-pus for another year of The Central Texas Writing Pro-ject’s Young Writers’ Summer Camp to learn new skills, improve their talents, and share with others their love for writing. Although the one- and two-week camps are tailored for students entering first through ninth grade, the Young Writer’s Camp allows teachers to learn just as much as students. “I encourage teachers to see this as an opportunity to grow as a literacy teacher,” said Lynn Masterson, Sen-ior Lecturer and Director of the Young Writers’ Camp at Texas State Round Rock Campus. “Prior to camp, we meet as a group, discussing and sharing ideas as we create lesson plans that focus on the child developing as a writer and engaging in activities that ‘real’ writers experience.” One of those experiences included a read-around ses-sion where parents were invited to hear the young writers’ stories, allowing children to share their hard work and parents to learn more of their talents. As camp came to an end, it was easy to see the impact teachers and students had on each other as they shared goodbyes, hugs and smiles. Until next year! The CTWP is a collaboration of the National Writing Project, Central Texas school districts, and Texas State University.
