Welcome

The Asian Youth Center Board of Directors

Asian Youth Center celebrates quartercentury of helping children and families

Its mission is simple, but dynamic: empowerlow-income, immigrant and at-risk communitiesthrough education, employment, and social ser-vices.

For 26 years, the Asian Youth Center (AYC) hassought to achieve that mission through programsranging from after-school education to employ-ment for out-of-school youth. With offices locatedthroughout the SGV, including San Gabriel andPomona, AYC supports more than 3,000 familiesacross one-third of Los Angeles County.

“More than anywhere else in SoCal, the SGVis home to a massive collection of Asian people, groups and communities,” said AYC’s ProgramDirector of Youth & Family Services Josh Lee.“AYC exists, in major part, to address these chal-lenges being faced by the Asian community.”

AYC’s growth did not come easy, however. Inits earliest years, the non-profit organizationstruggled with a small budget, limiting the scope

of its services. With an awareness of AYC’s potential impact,

co-founders Congresswoman Judy Chu and thelate May To, worked tirelessly to preserve theirmission to help youth succeed.

After 26 years of growth , AYC is now com-prised of four core departments: Educational En-richment Services, Youth & Family Services, Em-ployment Services, and Community Outreach &Education. Each department provides criticalsupport for the SGV community. More than 75%of AYC participants are under the age of 24.

“Our hope is that each student gains the sup-port, empowerment, and guidance necessary totake successful steps towards healthy and produc-tive adulthood,” said Lee.

On Oct.21, AYC will host its 26th AnniversaryCelebration and Awards Dinner at the Hilton LosAngeles/San Gabriel Hotel. The evening is a cel-

Bet you’ve never heard thisone before: My endodontist/root canal care specialist buddyis totally the coolest guy you’reever gonna meet.

Pasadena endodontistYounes Safa does amazing

Table for Three: learning to do things the right wayclinical work, and if you Google“Classy” you’ll see what he lookslike.

Doc took it to the next levelthis time at Pasadena’s Univer-sity Club. He sponsored a six-hour etiquette session hosted by

business etiquette expert,Theresa Thomas.

Team members are alwaysinvited to these training soiréesbut it was very clear from thebeginning, the DDS-typeswould prove to be the place set-tings projects.

We learned to do things theright way. We greeted, shookhands, worked the room, passed the butter counter-clockwise, and even learned to

eat watermelon salad left-handed, Continental style. Ithink Emily Post would haveactually cried.

Couldn’t believe what a din-ing dunce/knuckle dragger Iwas and that’s not so good be-cause, outside of Texas and Ari-zona, knuckles are not allowedto touch the table.

When I shared I liked cuttingup all of my string beans beforeeating them, Theresa just

smiled sadly the same smile I’veoften seen when I wear a bruinT-shirt with my yellow tutu.

When I told Theresa I prefercutting up my spaghetti ratherthan using the pasta shoveltwirl, she actually closed hereyes, clenched her fists, andstarted to shake a little beforetaking one giant step backward.

End of the day, hygienistsChelsea and Yau and I walkedinto a rare misty Saturday after-noon fully in control of oursuave selves and ready to as-sume a power stance approach-ing any table full of utensils anduninformed Chamber of Com-merce members.

Don’t know about Chelseaand Yau, but I can’t wait to goafter that next heaping plate ofLasagna Bolognese – Continen-tal style.

Consider tax brackets if converting to Roth IRAQ. Hello Emmy, I read on the

Internet that Roth IRAs are magi-cal tools for passing money to myheirs. Is this just sorcery?

A. Roth IRAs do offer some sig-nificant advantages, but avoid anymagical thinking. Roths aren’t al-ways the best method to passdown wealth. However, whenfunded at the right time and if leftto a much younger beneficiary, aRoth IRA can indeed be a usefultool for transferring wealth.

Inheriting a Roth IRA over aTraditional one is a big boon forthe receiver. Uncle Sam gets noth-ing so your loved one keeps all themoney.

But if you’re considering con-verting to a Roth for the purposeof passing it on, there are impor-tant variables to factor in, such as

tax brackets, both yours and yourheir’s.

If the tax rate you’ll pay at thetime of conversion is equal to thetax rate your heirs would paywhen they take their distributionsfrom an inherited TraditionalIRA, there’s probably an advan-tage in converting.

If the beneficiary’s future tax

rate is lower than yours when youconvert, then money could possi-bly be lost.

The ideal circumstance is thereverse: when your tax rate dur-ing the conversion process is lowerthan your beneficiary’s duringdistribution. In this case, using aRoth IRA as an inheritance vehicle

If you are a homeowner, you shouldlikely have a trust drafted to ensure thatyour home passes to your beneficiarieswithout having to pass through thelengthy and costly probate process.

In your trust, you will be the initialtrustee who is the person in charge of thetrust. When you pass, you will name inyour trust a successor trustee.

Choosing a successor trustee is ex-tremely important because that personwill be in charge of managing your as-sets after you pass, the distribution ofthose assets, and may have legal controlover your children.

Since the successor trustee has somuch power, what are your options whenchoosing a successor trustee?

You may choose:• A family member or friend.

Most clients choose a trusted fam-ily member or friend to adminis-ter their trust. There are financialand legal considerations thetrustee must take into account, soyou should not choose someonewho you feel may be irresponsible.

Being a successor trustee takesa lot of time. As a result, most cli-ents state in their trust that thesuccessor trustee should receive“reasonable compensation,” whichis typically around 1% of thetrustee estate per year.

• A professional. You maychoose an attorney, CPA, financialplanner, or other professional thatyou trust to act as trustee. Thisprofessional should receive com-pensation for his or her time, likelyat his or her billable hourly rate or1% of the value of the trust estate.

• A corporate trustee. If youare unable to choose a familymember, friend, or professional, you can choose a corporation toact as trustee. The big negativewith corporate trustees is that theytend to cost the most in fees.

• A combination. You maychoose a combination of theabove-mentioned options. For in-stance, you could choose to have

your child and your family attorney actas co-trustees, or you could choose yourthree children to act as co-trustees.

Although this article does not dis-cuss all possibilities, this article showsthat there are many options and con-siderations you should take into ac-count when choosing a trustee.

When in doubt, I recommend speak-ing about the responsibilities of beinga successor trustee with the person orpeople you are considering choosing asyour successor trustee, along with yourattorney.

designed over a period of years by our own commu-nity basketball coach, Richard Marquis of the PlaySmarter Basketball Classes and International Camps.

His local classes are conducted here in Temple City,San Gabriel and Alhambra. This allowed the Molten ball company to introducetheir basketballs to the U.S. 35 years ago. Molten bas-ketballs are now very popular all over the world. Theirhigh profile design was first introduced during theBeijing Olympic Games.

Molten balls have also been the official basketballfor the past seven Olympic Games. Member SpotlightRabies clinic highlights importance of vaccinationsBy Amy Lin

Temple City’s annual rabiesclinic July 10 offered pet own-ers an opportunity to vaccinatetheir pets at a bargain price.

At a fee of only $5 per pet,the Community CompanionAnimal Hospital has been

sponsoring this event for thepast 14 years. All proceeds goto the City.

After experiencing highturnouts for many years, theclinic witnessed a record lownumber of participants thisyear.

More than 200 pet ownersparticipated in this event, com-pared to last year’s participantcount of 348.

Dr. Joseph Pavlik has beenoverseeing this event for thepast eight years and was sur-prised at the drop of partici-pants.

“I think some residents justaren’t fully aware of how cru-cial it is to vaccinate their petsyet. Perhaps we can workharder to educate people aboutpet vaccination laws and en-force those laws more strictly,”he said.

It is dangerous for pets to beoutdoors if they have not metproper vaccination provisions. The state law currently requiresany dog or cat over four monthsold to receive a rabies vaccina-tion.

Temple City also recentlyadopted Title 10 of the Los An-geles County Code, which in-cludes mandatory spay/neuterand microchipping provisions. Those who violate the provi-sions of the Los Angeles CountyCode may be subject to admin-istrative penalties.

Even though the clinic willnot be back until next year, it isnot too late to protect your pet’ssafety by properly vaccinatingthem.

Fortunately, there are manyplaces such as the San GabrielValley Humane Society that of-fer vaccinations, spaying/neu-tering, and microchipping ser-vices at cost-friendly prices.

By Agnes MokSix lucky Temple City students be-

gan their adventure to the sheep-popu-lated continent of Australia July 16. Iwas one of them. We boarded a Qantasplane at 9:15 pm and 15 grueling hourslater, we arrived in Sydney, Australia.

The plane ride was smooth, for themost part, as I was able to enjoy ninehours of sleep. When we arrived at theSydney airport, we were picked up byTina Tallack and Madison Edwards, who then escorted us on an hour anda half bus ride to Ms. Yvonne Whalan’shome.

My host family, the Smithers, pickedme up there. The Smithers, Paul andBridget have two children: Tom and hisyounger sister Lauren.

The first notably different part ofNew South Wales is the distance be-tween places. These Australian citiesare incredibly large, perhaps over 10times as spread out as Temple City.

Homes are not as densely grouped, and there is much more vegetation

Six Temple City High School Studentsare now experiencing bush walks andbeach visits during their visit to Sister CityHawkesbury, Australia. They are stayingwith host families and attending varioushigh schools in Hawkesbury. Hosted by theHawkesbury Sister City Association, theywill take the students on several site-see-ing adventures. than we would find in Los Angeles. Ilive in the more rural area: Glenorie, which is located in Sydney. From there,it takes at least half an hour to get any-where else.

Fascinating wildlife includes kook-aburras, cockatoos, sheep, cows, horses, kangaroos, wallabies, and chickens. Myhost family’s home is massive, with anextraordinary backyard that leadsstraight to the bush.

While taking a bush walk, I was ableto spot some unique birds and animalsnative to Australia. My family owns a

dog, a cat, and two chickens. Theirproperty includes a spacious house, aswimming pool, a tennis court, a shed,a dam, and acres of green grass.

Though my family lives in Sydney, the kids attend a private school inHawkesbury: Arndell Anglican College,a 25-minute drive from their home. The school consists of students ofgrades kindergarten through grade 12.It is separated into two schools: the pri-mary and the high school, and the en-tire student population is about 1,100people. The classes are small, usually

consisting of 10-25 people per class. On our first excursion, the

Hawkesbury Sister City associationtook us (six Temple City kids) out fora bush walk in the Blue Mountains. Theview from the top of the cliff was ab-solutely amazing, as we were able to seethe vast valley and lush canyon.

Following that, we were taken to Ms.Whalan’s home where we were servedafternoon tea and received a scone-baking lesson. We each then made ourown batches of scones to take home toour families.

Throughout this first week, we en-countered numerous cultural differ-ences, the most eminent being lan-guage. The Australian colloquial lan-guage is interesting and unique: dodgymeans average, tomato sauce refers toketchup, bins are what we’d calltrashcans, cheeky and tucker meanfood.

These are only a few of the wide ar-ray of words used regularly, and all sixof us have been fortunate enough topick up on most of them. Other thanlanguage, food is also significantly dis-tinctive.

So far, I’ve sampled Tim Tams, meatpies, sausage rolls, and vegemite (all ofwhich I loved).

All in all, the first week has zoomedby so quickly. I’ve savored and enjoyedevery moment of it, whether it beschool, excursions, visiting family, orstaying at home. Australia has beenabsolutely lovely to us thus far, and I’monly upset that I can’t stay longer.

DINING GUIDE

Fun, fun, fun at Concerts in the Park

Surf ’s Up, a Beach Boys tribute band, kept the audi-ence enthralled with their harmony and rhythm.

By Amy LinTemple City has been hosting weekly sum-

mer concerts for more than 20 years. AlthoughI have lived in this City for more than a de-cade, I had never joined in the fun until thissummer.

Recently, I attended a concert featuring aBeach Boys tribute band: Surf ’s Up. Their per-formance left the audience - and me, in awe.

Before attending this concert, I had listenedto a few hits from the Beach Boys.

I was particularly amazed at how much

Surf ’s Up sounded like the innovative 60’s banditself. The show had folks of all ages (many evendressed in beach gear!) dancing full-out at thegazebo.

Before the night ended, I had a wide smile,a jump in my step, and a feeling of joy in myheart. From what I saw, a majority of the audi-ence would have said the same.

With the help of sponsors, volunteers, andtalented musicians, the Concerts in the Parkevent has become an enjoyable summer treatfor people of all ages.

Attending a concert is a great option for thosewho wish to spice up their summer with an excit-ing occasion. The concerts run every Wednesdayfrom 7-9 p.m., with pre-concert activities startingat 6:30 p.m.

Admission to the concerts is free and open tothe public.

My first Concert in the Park experience was ex-citing. I met new people and felt more integratedwithin my community than ever. I highly recom-mend everyone attend a few concerts this summer. You won’t regret it.

Put these remaining summer dates on your cal-endars for some great relaxation.
