SLA SPIRIT AUGUST 2015 Do You Have Your Purple Yet? by Donna Burke Edmondson ’61 Start looking through your closets, go shopping or borrow something purple. Alumni Weekend is fast approach- ing, October 9-11, 2015. You may ask, “What does purple have to do with Alumni Weekend?” Well, purple and white are South Lancaster Academy's school colors, and have been ever since I can remember. I love seeing the alumni, sporting their colors, as they trickle in for registration on Friday afternoon. The school spirit really erupts on Sabbath morning at church, when we observe a sea of purple and white. This Alumni Weekend promises to be one of our best ever. There is still some fine tuning to do, but with everyone working as a team, things are coming together beauti- fully. There are also exciting changes coming to our school. We have a new principal, Jeff Lambert ’02. Congratulations Jeff, we know you will do an excellent job, leading us into the future, as we take on this new building phase. We would like to extend a special “Thank You” to Theresa Robidoux for being our interim principal. She took on the new and difficult roll of principal and teacher as well as first, being a wife and mother. But then, she is a woman, after all. Job well done! (Con’td on Page 2) SLA Southern California Chapter Meeting by Nancy Daniels Nelson ’65 On Sunday, June 28, 2015, we held our first South Lancaster Academy Southern California Chapter meeting. Led by Jon Nosek ’66, SLA’s Alumni and Develop- ment Director, 26 loyal alumni covering a span of 29 years—from Marjorie Olsen Macomber, Class of ’43 to Chad Nosek, class of ’02, assembled, partook of a delicious meal, and had much fun sharing our memories of SLA. For this first meeting, I wish to thank Ken Hutchins, proud member of the class of ’50, who helped by making countless calls to graduates from the years 1943-1955— personally inviting them to come. He did well as this was our largest segment of attendees. The person who traveled the furthest for this meeting was Carolee Wilbur Edling ’73, who came from Carson City, Nevada. We were delighted to see her and appreciate her efforts to attend. SLA Southern California Alumni Chapter: Classmates Betty Stotz Calev ’66, and Jon Nosek ’66 Jon brought us up-to-date with a presentation of SLA today, including its steady enrollment growth, student witnessing activities, and the current building project. We talked about when our next and subsequent Southern California SLA Chapter meetings should be held and it was agreed that February or March would be best. (Given last winter’s brutal storms in New England, Jon was more than happy with these dates.) (Cont’d on Page 2) SLA Chattanooga, Tennessee Chapter Meeting a Resounding Success by Donna Burke Edmondson ’61 The First SLA Chapter Meeting in Chatta- nooga was held on July 19. Approximately 25 alumni registered at the Standifer Gap SDA Church Fellowship Hall, for 4½ hours of visiting and dining. A few folks had never been back to South Lancaster for an Alumni Weekend. They welcomed the opportunity to see class- mates and other friends for the first time since graduation. The event was hosted by Art and Nan Schumacher ’60. The decorations and absolutely fabulous meal were created by Nan Schumacher. She went above and beyond to make the dining hall burst with the purple and white colors of South Lancaster Academy. Jon Nosek gave a presentation of the activities, curriculum and the future of SLA. The “Building for Eternity” building campaign was laid out with much more detail than we have heard and seen in this past year. With the help of all the friends of SLA and the Lord's blessing, we hope to have ground breaking next fall. This is a huge undertaking, but long over-do. Be generous when called upon to do your part. Our youth are worth it. Those before us saw the vision and did it for us, now we can give back. (Purple, Cont’d from Page 1) A few weeks ago, the Alumni Association celebrated a new, first SLA Chapter Meeting in Southern California. It is so rewarding to see these new chapters meetings taking place. Another first SLA Chapter Meeting was held in Chattanooga on July 19, and another Florida Chapter meeting will be on August 30. These satellite chapters are a medium to connect alumni around the country. They have already reached many alumni who have never been back to an alumni weekend, or haven't seen their classmates and friends in years. What took us so long to get these chapters started? Now that they are established, let's keep them going. These meetings represent dozens and dozens of hours making phone calls, emailing friends and classmates, inviting them to these new chapters. These hours were donated by several volunteers who were anxious to do their part to give back to their school. Thank you, one and all for making these new chapter meetings a smashing success. Finally, I want to whet your appetite for the exciting Saturday night program on Alumni Weekend. Think about the music and the fashions of the 60's. Think of the guys in their polyester leisure suites, wild and madras plaid or striped pants. Think about bell bottom pants. Ladies, think about your maxi-skirts, braided hair, Jackie Kennedy styles with box jacket suits, pill box hats. Fashions ran the full range from one extreme to the other. Here's your assignment for Saturday night: of course, it's not mandatory, but it could be ONE of the highlights of the weekend. This is a period program, so we thought it would be fun to dress for the 60's on Saturday night. First, check out your closet, I know some of you guys still have a pair of polyester plaid pants hanging in the back of your closet. If not, check with Goodwill and Salvation Army Stores. Vintage and second-hand stores are a great place to find something befitting this period. Be creative and have fun with this. I hope all of you have made your reservations for travel and lodging. Don't forget to get your meal tickets for Sabbath lunch and Saturday night supper and program. I pray for God's blessing on this Alumni Weekend and safe travel for one and all. See you in October. Be there!

Brass for Vespers by Donna Burke Edmondson ’61

Earl Raney ’80 is the well-known Artistic Director and Solo Trumpeter of the award-winning Epic Brass Quintet. He is the Director of Thayer Performing Arts Center and Community Music School in South Lancaster, Massachusetts. He is also working in the music department at South Lancaster Academy. This is the short list of his accomplishments. Earl has graciously agreed to present the Sabbath Vespers program for SLA Alumni Weekend. Earl is also a composer and would love to take the opportunity to showcase some of his own compositions. His family is also very talented and will be accompanying him in this presentation. How special it is to have family members share this event with him. This is a must-attend program for the weekend. Be sure to get there early, as we expect to fill the Village Church.

(Southern California Chapter Meeting, Cont’d from Page 1) We are so proud to be alumni of South Lancaster Academy, established 133 years ago, for it played a significant role in shaping our lives…intellectually, spiritually and socially and continues to this day teaching young people and showing them the way. Now that our first successful meeting has taken place, we are planning for many more to follow in the years to come.

Ken Hutchins ’50 visits with John Reeves ’47 during dinner at the Southern California Chapter Meeting. Back to the 60’s by Janice Kendrick ’66 It was a time of change; a time of many voices calling out for greater freedom, and other voices calling out for innovative movement away from the complacency of the 50’s. We had a young president and then he was taken away suddenly, shockingly. This was the setting for our academy years at SLA in the 60’s, and this was the year that our 50-yr. honor class graduated; right, smack in the middle of that turbulent decade. So we wanted to return to an evening of the 60’s to give tribute and a brief hats off to the decade that made such an impression on us and helped make us who we are. “Come, join us, people, wherever you are, for the times, they are a-changin’ . . . .” We will sing this and many of the great songs of the revolutionary, moving and shaking generation: fun song, sad songs, patriotic songs, long-lost love songs, and of course we will bring the house down with the SLA School Song, as always. We may even throw in Dominique for our long-suffering French teacher who had to listen to us torture the French language. And just to add a little more fun to the evening, some will be showing up in attire appropriate for the era. There is a wide range in the styles of the 60’s, from haute couture to “preppy” to “mod” to hippy, so we may see some of each; we’ll have to see. But you can feel free to join that part of the fun as well as the songs, too, and really get “grooving, man!”

Commitment Corner by Phyllis Fales Sabol ’65 As I thought about this article, many forms of commitment came to mind: commitment to family and friends, commitment to a church or spiritual group, commitment to a hobby, or even commitment to a job or life work. What seems most appropriate to write about with my 50th reunion coming up is commitment to a school I knew and loved so many years ago. So, what is it, the buildings? The particular classes we took? The beautiful town where our school is located? No, no, and no. It is, of course, all about the people we met there: the teachers who taught us; the friends with whom we shared that special time of our life; the band or chorus members and those special memories, the people with whom we worked, maybe even that first girlfriend or boyfriend. When we left those hallowed halls we were sure we would all meet again, and soon. We had been doing that for years. But reality has a way of separating us and taking us far away from one another; sometimes for years and years. Some of you can say you’ve never been back for a reunion. We’ve missed that chance to reunite. Perhaps we think we don’t have anything in common anymore. Perhaps we think we won’t be accepted. Maybe we can’t see spending the money for travel and lodgings for such a frivolous occasion. You would be wrong on all counts. You have in common this shared young adulthood, a time that is fleeting and comes but once in our lives. Anyone who has had children will attest that this special time of life is never going to be repeated. We’ve all grown and learned that acceptance is the only way that others will open up to us; we are pretty well done with the cliques. Spending the money on a frivolous occasion is a deterrent. But those of us who have had the pleasure of attending Alumni Weekends find the money somewhere; and we realize that it isn’t frivolous once you come back and discover that the connection we had as kids is not broken or forgotten. It is, in fact, priceless. For all of you, there is someone hoping you will come back this time…you are just as special as you once were. This reunion is not about our family, church, hobby or job. It’s about you meeting up with those special people you knew and loved. You’ll find you still know them and you still love them. And they still know and love you. What’s happened in the intervening years is part of that story. The story is worth hearing; your story is worth hearing. Be committed to come this year. Whether you are brand new to this or have attended 50 reunions, you would be missing a chance that will not come again in this life. It was always about the people. It’s Time to Rally the Troops!! by June Hilbert Harris ’65 Who knows what October 9, 10, & 11, 2015 is? What year was the largest class to ever graduate from SLA? Do you know how many actually graduated? One Hundred. What class was the last class to graduate from SLA when it was a boarding class? What class was the Best class to graduate from SLA? (Now I know I will be getting some flack for saying that as there have been many great classes to graduate from SLA.) Well, if you guessed the Awesome Class of 1965 you would be right. Alumni Weekend this year celebrates the 50th reunion of our class and as I look at my calendar I realize we are looking at but a few short weeks until we gather in South Lancaster for this Special Reunion. Yes, it is a very special reunion indeed. Fifty years is a long time and as we “mature” each year becomes more and more precious. Getting together with classmates and sharing memories,

remembering the good times (and maybe for some not so good), the laughter, all takes us back to a time when we were young and ready to go out and conquer the world. I hope that the members of the Class of 1965 have their plans in place to join us for that weekend. Your Alumni Officers have been busy over the past year putting together the weekend programs and you won’t want to miss any of them. For any members of the class who will be arriving early, you are invited to our home on Thursday evening, for supper and an evening of visiting. I just need to have you contact me in advance to let me know you are coming so I can plan. (That includes the Class of ’64 and ’66.) I can be reached at 978-273-6117 or email me at: [email protected]. Friday for lunch we will be getting together to go to Kimball’s in Lancaster. Please come and join us. On Sunday, the 11th, our class will be going to the Old Mill for a Buffet meal. Again, if you are planning to join us I will need to hear from you at least two weeks before so I can get your payment and have a final number to give to them. Also, to the Class of 1964, our class wishes to extend to you a special invitation to join us for the weekend. Even though you celebrated your 50th last year we want you to come back this year and join us for our special weekend. Our two classes had a very special bond and we want you to be a part of our weekend activities and those of the Alumni Association. I will be looking forward to hearing from you that you are planning to be here. Let’s not disappoint. Let us have the largest gathering of any class here this year for our 50th. I can’t wait to hear from you. TRAVEL PLANS FOR ALUMNI WEEKEND – Updated! (Chattanooga Chapter Meeting, Cont’d from Page 1) One of the highlights of the day was a surprise appearance by Elder John Thurber ’50. Elder Thurber was the boys’ dean, choir and Choralist director, and the sponsor of the class of ’61. He is such a special man and has been dedicated to Christian education his whole life. What a joy it was to give him a hug and tell him how wonderful it was for him to be with us on this first chapter meeting in Chattanooga. It is always a joy to see John Thurber. We are looking forward to seeing as many as possible in October in South Lancaster. Hope you will be there.

Many of these people are getting ready to retire from their jobs and consequently from office in the near future. We need younger graduates to step up and run this organization. Many of us have worked for the association for a very long time; we are concerned about the future of the alumni group. Now would be the time to volunteer while there are still plenty of members ready, willing, and able to teach you what they know. With

technology we no longer have to travel for meetings; we are able to plan our weekend with teleconferences and e-mails. When everyone takes a project, much is accomplished in a single week. Our webmaster, David Adamson, has worked tirelessly to see that we get the latest news, updates and photos. We have recently gone electronic for our meal tickets, something we have wanted to do for a while. We have made some good changes by using technology in the past few years but we know a younger group can take this even further. Our constitution requires us to re-elect, elect, or appoint officers every two years. The next election is in 2016. In recent years we’ve found that there is just no good time to hold a business meeting during the weekend. Therefore we are trying something new and innovative. The constitution is now posted on the website at www.slaalumni.org It explains the duties of each officer and committee member. Please read it now. We are planning a conference call on October 28, and would really love to have you join us in this new format. (See Constitution article on page 5) But don’t wait for that. Volunteer now and get a hands on view of how all this works together. We work hard but we also have fun. [email protected]

Principal’s Corner by Jeff Lambert ’02 I am proud to be a graduate of South Lancaster Academy, and I am proud to be a teacher at South Lancaster Academy. It is a privilege and an honor to have the opportunity to serve as principal of this school. I couldn’t think of anywhere else I would want to be. I believe in this institution. I believe in Christian education. I am excited about our future. Twelve years ago I graduated as a student from this school. At the time, my 18-year old self vowed to never set foot in this building again. The world was in front of me, and I wanted to spread my wings and experience life outside the “bubble.” I left, grew up, and experienced life outside of SLA. But SLA never left me. The friends I made in Academy continued to impact my life positively and the spiritual seed planted in my heart kept Christ in my life, all thanks to SLA. My commitment to give back and make a difference began with volunteer activities and outreach experiences during my years at this school. I am who I am today because of South Lancaster Academy. So here I am, excited about being able to give back. I get to come back and make a difference in the community that made a difference in me. We are in the middle of a special time in earth’s history and a special time in SLA’s journey. A Christian education, rooted in a deep love for Christ and a desire to preach a special message to the world is needed now, more than ever. We will be that school. The world economy and job market is changing fast, and students need a curriculum and facility to cultivate 21st century skills. We will be that school. Society needs brave individuals not afraid to stand up for what they believe; those who will show moral fortitude and independent thinking; those who will show compassion and love for their fellow human beings. Our students and graduates will be those individuals. I can't accomplish these tasks alone. I need you. I need your prayers and your encouragement. This school needs your continued support. English writer Anthony Burgess once stated “Without a sense of caring, there can be no sense of community.” We are all members of this school, and we are all accountable to one another for its success. As we move forward, please continue to pray for this school. Thank your for continued support and deep love for this institution. SLA Graduation 2015 by Phyllis Fales Sabol ’65 Graduation Day for South Lancaster Academy arrived on a sun drenched Sunday morning, the 7th of June. Twenty-nine excited seniors arrived to take part in the festivities. The program included several musical performances, and student participation was high. Igor Yoshida, class president, addressed his class on the different ways they had managed to make changes over the years; he expressed his wish that the class would use this tool for good in the world. Amber Sanchez wrote and read her Poem of Strength wherein she named and honored all the strengths that God had given the Class. The class made a gift of two air conditioners to the school, much needed for the English and Math departments. Jeff Lambert, incoming principal, addressed the senior class with three pieces of advice for finding success in life: 1. Success looks a lot like hard work. 2. You will fail; expect it and overcome it. 3. Big dreams always come with small challenges. Jeff also presented the alumni scholarships for $1,000 each to DeAnna Brown and Nicholas Morin, the two juniors that were selected.

The photo shows the excited class, our newest alums! SLA Class of 2015 The Class Aim: To discuss that what lies behind us and what lies ahead of us are tiny matters compared to what lies within us. The Class Motto: Romans 8:28 Jeff stressed how academically successful this particular class was. Eleven of the Class were members of the National Honor Society; twelve graduated with honors or above; six had been either 12 or 13 years with Browning and SLA. Every graduating senior is furthering his/her education. Obituaries Donald Hutchins’46 passed away on June 30 at the age of 85 in Andrews, NC. He managed his parents’ clothing store in South Lancaster for many years, and then worked in sales until he retired. He is survived by his daughters, Carol June, Janice, Eileen, and Elma Sue, his grandchildren and his brother Kenneth ’50. Irville “Tim” Millet ’52 died at home on Sunday, July 5 after an illness. He is survived by his wife, Elizabeth Kennedy Millet, children, Ron, Karen Jennings and Jean Oglesby, and eight grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Douglas McIntyre ’65 passed away on July 9 in Denver, Colorado. He was a pastor and was very active in addiction counseling and in the “Broken Chains” program. Lars Isaacson, attended ’68 died on July 2. He attended but did not graduate from SLA, and graduated from PVA in ’68. It’s Time to amend the SLA Alumni Constitution Since the last time the SLA Alumni Constitution was revised, we have entered the electronic age. In order to bring our constitution into line with the electronic age, we have gone through and made our changes and have posted the original document with “Track Changes” to show the updates, and the clean final document on the website at www.slaalumni.org for your review. Since the version that is still in effect requires a meeting in order to make changes, we are setting up a meeting for Wednesday, October 28, 2015 at 7:30 EDT as an online audio conference. The call-in number is 302-202-1108, and the ID number is 753-265. Please go to the SLA Alumni website and have the document open

on your computer, or printed out. We will go through the document line by line, and revision by revision, and you will have the opportunity to make changes or suggestions. Please join us on October 28.

Class of 1960 by Patricia Jenkins Rose ’60 We hope you’re planning to come to our 55th class reunion. It’s always a rich experience to be together. We would like to connect and find acceptance and support as we share honestly about our life experi- ences. At this age, we’ve all had to deal with difficult things. We’ve learned and we’ve grown. These are wonderful things to share with each other in honest and supportive ways: the good, the bad, the sad, and the beautiful. It’s all worthwhile! Besides the pleasure of being together, New England is always beautiful in October. It’s a lovely time of the year to visit South Lancaster. SLA doesn’t have addresses for these classmates. If you have any information about the following friends, could you let us know? We’re looking for:

Diana Hallstrom Levesque Lorraine White Judith Sees Garner Harry Turner Sharon Henkel Cleveland Ubaldo Sibila David R. Moulton Manuel DePena

Contact Pat Jenkins Rose [email protected] or Sally Towers Blundell [email protected] if you have any information about these old friends. Pat or Sally will happily answer questions you might have, as best we can. Even if you aren’t able to attend the reunion October 9 – 11, 2015, please write and tell us how you're doing. We can share that with the group when we meet as a class on Sabbath afternoon. It's going to be a good time spent together. You'll be missed if you aren't at SLA this October!
