The summer seems to be flying by! It seems like only yesterday we were celebrating the Welcome Home Party, Memorial Day Extravaganza and July 4th Festivities. We trust you are enjoying all that Cullasaja Club has to offer and look forward to your participation in the many new activities and events we have planned in the upcoming months. Please take a look at the schedule of events and dates in this newsletter and mark your calendars so that you do not miss out.
If you have not had the chance to do so, please stop by the administrative offices and introduce yourself to our new Membership Sales and Marketing Director, Amy Fine. Amy joins our team after a successful real estate career in Hilton Head, SC and she has hit the ground running. We are glad to have her with us at Cullasaja and she is looking forward to meeting you and also meeting any prospects you recommend for membership.
Hopefully, you are aware that the Club has a newly redesigned website (www. cullasaja-club.com). We also have a Facebook page and are using other social media applications including Twitter to better communicate with members and prospects. Please visit our Facebook page and click on the ‘like’ button to use that form of media to get information about club happenings. If you use Twitter, you can find us and click the ‘follow’ button and then we will keep you up to date with brief ‘tweets’ and important updates as well.
There have been quite a few questions regarding the tipping policy at Cullasaja. As a reminder, tipping is permitted for exceptional service from our valets at the clubhouse. Tipping elsewhere is discouraged.
We have many new things planned over the coming months and hope you will take full advantage of the opportunities to have fun with other members. If you have any questions regarding any of the activities or events please contact us.
Thank you for your support and we look forward to seeing you around the Club.
Best Regards,
Chris Conner

GENERAL MANAGER UPDATE | by Chris Conner, CCM News | ACTIVITY CENTER
MEMBERSHIP SALES & MARKETING DIRECTOR | Meet Amy
by Tom Nelson | FROM THE GREEN
Amy Fine comes to us from the Hilton Head Island, South Carolina area where she and her husband, Michael, have lived for the past eighteen years. They have one daughter, Avery Nicole, who is beginning her junior year at The College of Charleston and will be studying abroad in Japan starting in January.
Amy has years of experience in sales and marketing, most recently working for Keller Williams Realty, selling property
in the Lowcountry of South Carolina.
Amy and her husband are excited to be relocating to Highlands, an area they have enjoyed vacationing in for years.
“I am looking forward to getting to know the members and becoming a part of the Cullasaja family. I’m also looking forward to introducing other families to the exceptional lifestyle offered here. I’m thrilled to be part of all the exciting things happening at Cullasaja and can’t wait to contribute to its future success!”
RETURN OF REGULAR YOGA CLASSES AT THE ACTIVITY CENTER
This year has seen an increased interest in the Saturday morning Yoga class. Participation is up and some members have asked that we increase the offerings. In order to facilitate an increased schedule we have contracted with Amy Hargis from The Wellness Place of Highlands. Amy is a degreed Counselor and Minister, Certified Personal Trainer, Yoga, Pilates, Kettlebell and Martial Arts instructor. We are glad to welcome her to the Cullasaja
Club team to provide our members with a new experience and approach.
Classes will be at 11:00 a.m. on every Saturday and there will be a charge of $5 per member and $10 per guest.
Amy would like to schedule additional classes during the week offering either Yoga or any of her other programs. We would like to get input from members on times that would best suit our active Cullasaja schedule. Please feel free to address your suggestions to Amy after class or to the Activity Center staff at your convenience.
As always we strive to make the best programs available to our membership and we hope this will see great participation.
So far this season has been on the drier side (I hesitate to write this as I would hate to jinx it) providing great playing conditions. As you may know we are in the middle of an irrigation system replacement and to date, we have 10 holes completed. The new system, installed on numbers 2-8 and 15-17, is working very well. The layout provides coverage and control unmatched by the old, basic and inefficient system. On the holes with the new system, we can apply water more precisely where it is needed and not oversaturate areas that do not water. You may notice that the fairways on the “old holes” 1,9-14 and 18, have been a
little softer and the roughs not as green and lush. This is simply a product of how it was designed and installed.
While there will always be some hand watering, the new system has allowed us to drastically reduce the number of man hours required to keep the course in good condition during periods of drought. This frees up the staff to work on more noticeable tasks that make more of an impression on members and guests.
We are slated to complete the final phase or the irrigation system installation this upcoming off-season.

JUNE CROQUET QUALIFIER RESULTS: We had 34 CCA members who participated in the June 22nd Croquet Qualifier Tournament. There was tremendous excitement in the Ladies Doubles Advanced Level, which required a shoot-out to determine the winner. At the end of regulation play, Berty Fransen and Lane Dawkins were tied with Betsy Butler and Peggy Turner. So, they played a tiebreaker and it came down to the final shot with Betsy Butler hitting through the wicket to ensure a victory for her team. The Mixed Doubles Intermediate group saw 8 teams competing for the title on that day. Thanks to all of our great Cullasaja CCA members who came out and participated in the June Croquet Qualifier. If you haven’t won a Qualifier previously, you still have one more chance in August on the 24th.
CROQUET QUALIFIER RESULTS: CROQUET QUALIFIER RESULTS:

Each Thursday we offer a complimentary croquet clinic at 3:00 pm and also have two starting times for match play; one at 3:00 pm and one at 5:00 pm. So if you are thinking about playing the wonderful sport of croquet, this is the perfect opportunity to come out and give it a try.
CULLASAJA CROQUET ASSOCIATION: Each month we continue add more croquet players to our roster. We currently have over 150 croquet playing members here at Cullasaja. Becoming a CCA member has its perks with world class instructional seminars, rules seminars, and social mixers which are all included in your CCA membership dues. The fee for membership in the CCA is only $75.00 per person per season.

JEFF SOO CLASSROOM AND ONCOURT RULES SEMINAR: Make plans now to attend this great Rules Seminar. If you are like me, you know that all of us need to brush up on our rules of the game. by Ken Wheeler | CAMP REVIEW
Each year, we strive to put on a great program for our Fourth of July week campers. We have learned over the years that we must make plans to work around our unpredictable weather. This year, as most of you know, we were glad we had such contingencies in place.
Our first day went off as planned. With the assistance of Wildwater Adventure Company, we spent a day in South Carolina on challenging ropes courses, climbing walls, river rafting and lake kayaking / paddle-boarding. The rafting campers had great fun at Bull Sluice, the Class Four rapid at the end of the river trip (see pictures below). Meanwhile, the younger group engaged in Paddleboard Piracy – a game of tag on the water with multiple pirates on each paddleboard.
On day two, our rain plan came in to use as we took the campers to Gravitopia Indoor Trampoline Park in Greenville, where campers engaged in dodge ball on a trampoline court for nearly 2 hours. Others climbed obstacle courses, swung on the trapeze and silk ropes, or just bounced from trampoline to trampoline trying various acrobatic and gymnastic flips and spins.
On the final day of camp, we tried to get in our fishing tournament; but alas, the weather was not going to allow it. We had enough time to crown winners in most fishing categories but had to retire to the Highlands Rec Park for indoor games including pickle ball, basketball, various board games and more while we waited out the weather. The finishing touch on day 3 was the ever-popular July 4th Cart Parade, which was a smashing success, and with that we rounded out a great camp week.
On a Club note, special thanks are extended to the Homeowners’ Association for giving us the time of Crystal Corbin who ran the tiny-tots kids’ camp at the Activity Center; and for allowing Gary Clark (dubbed “Scary Gary” by our campers) to help with the 6-12 year olds. Gary tolerated over two hours of being the biggest target on the dodge ball court and also helped with driving duties. Special thanks to Nikki Beurmann, Charles’ wife for also helping with the little kids’ camp with Crystal.
We thoroughly enjoy seeing families enjoying the Sports and July 4th Camp weeks and love creating great experiences that should provide lifelong memories to all who participated.

HOT OFF THE PLATE | by Shelley Walker
Welcome back Sean! Sean Hannan is originally from Bradenton, Florida. Nearly born in his grandparents’ restaurant, Sean has been in the food service industry since he was a young adult. After learning the ropes and working for his father, Sean came to the Cullasaja Club
in 2001 to gain some more diverse experience with Chef Marie. Since that time he has worked at the Bradenton Yacht Club, The Miss Whirl Club in Sarasota as a Sous Chef, and at Wolfgang’s on Main. Sean resides in Franklin with his children: Scott 15, Chloe 4 and Zoe 2, who keep him busy in his spare time. Sean also loves to fish (fly, rod and reel, fresh and saltwater), garden and is a beginning beekeeper. Sean is excited about serving you throughout the season.
Hi, my name is Gena from the Culinary Institute of America in Hyde Park, NY. I was born and raised in Newark, Delaware. I come from an old school Italian family. I love the beach and anything that involves me under the sun! My dream is to always make people happy with the food I put in front of them. I’m all about good vibes and positive thoughts! :)
Hello my name is Kirstyn Vitovich. I am from Johnstown, Pennsylvania, a small town right outside of Pittsburgh. I am the only girl in my immediate family and I am the oldest. I have one brother who is 16. Since I grew up with all boys, I am kind of a “tomboy” and I am very active. I played softball, basketball, and soccer growing
up. Pennsylvania has a very outdoor focused atmosphere; so, I enjoy fishing, hiking, and basically anything in nature. I started cooking and baking at a young age. My grandmothers taught me to cook and I expanded more of my knowledge by working in different restaurants. The reason why I decided to become a baker started my junior year of high school. I went to Paris, France and fell in love with all the different bakers at every corner. I began looking at cooking schools to help me with what I wanted to accomplish and found The Culinary Institute of America - I knew it was where I wanted to go. I am now completing my first year. After I graduate next year, I will be return to receive my BPS in Hospitality, and hopefully, a minor in micro-brewing and wines.
Meet Kevin from the Culinary Institute of America in Hyde Park, NY. I was first introduced to the food world at a very young age. My passion began to grow around freshman year in High School when I actually began to create dishes of my own. I really enjoy cooking, whether it would be to make
a traditional potato and cheese pierogi or Gobki (Stuffed Cabbage). I come from a simple background of Polish roots, as all of my family is from Poland. Growing up in a 1st generation home, I was taught many life skills early on from everyone around me. I picked up an interest in agriculture every summer working with my mother managing a small vegetable garden. I have always had an interest with nature since a young age. The clear open pastures help me get away into another dimension. I love to go sightseeing and hiking whenever I can. I enjoy living life on the edge and take any opportunity to do thrill-seeking activities.
Say hello to Ken Hahn, Cullasaja’s Executive Sous Chef. I was born in Guilford, Connecticut and was raised on the New England shoreline. I moved to North Carolina and attended East Carolina University. I began my first cooking job at Greenville Country Club and worked as a prep cook for 4 years. I then moved to Asheville and worked at the Biltmore Estate as a line and pastry cook. Several years later, I became the Sous Chef at the Flying Frog Café, a premier fine dining restaurant. I continue to grow in the industry and received the position as Executive Chef at the Red Rocker Inn in Black Mountain. I moved to Cashiers, North Carolina after the birth of my son and became the Executive Chef at Cedar Creek Racquet Club. My goal is to be a part of, and help lead a passionate culinary family here in the mountains and raise my son in the place I love for the rest of my life.
Welcome back William Caldwell! I have been with Chef Marie since the beginning. I am a dedicated, loyal and passionate culinarian. In my spare time, I am a musician and pursue that passion as often as possible.
Hello, I am Monika and I am excited to be back this season. I am originally from Czech Republic and moved to the US in 2001. I have a strong culinary background with 30 years of experience. I live in Atlanta and I am currently pursuing my MS in Gerontology. I love working with the elderly and with children. I have three children and 1 grandchild.
My hobbies are gardening and traveling. I have previously worked at Highland Falls Country Club and Wolfgang’s.
We welcome back Julius! I was born in Czech Republic, lived in Canada and moved to the US twenty five years ago. I have a strong culinary background with over 30 years experience as a cook. I previously worked at Highlands Falls Country Club and Wolfgang’s on Main in Highlands. I have 3 children and 5 grandchildren. I love to cook, eat and try different types of food. I have worked at Cullasaja since 1996.
Meet Tzuwei Thor, Cullasaja’s Lead Line Cook! I was born and raised in Malaysia and moved to North Carolina when I was 15. I have worked for Marc Forgione from Iron Chef at Tribecca and opened a restaurant for Bill Murray in Charleston, South Carolina. I went to University of North Carolina at Wilmington. In my free time I love to play golf and work at the
Culinary Vegetable Institute Test Kitchen in Ohio.
Meet and welcome back Mike! I was born in Dallas, Texas and I am 36 years old. I am the proud father of three kids and husband to a great wife. I am a friendly and outgoing person. I like spending time with my family and playing video games. I would like to own my own restaurant one day.
Welcome Jake Ries! I grew up in Indianapolis and I have an older sister that lives in Charlotte. I am a junior at Purdue and I am studying hospitality management. I am currently considering culinary schools after graduation. I like to mountain bike hike, and fish. I also enjoy watching movies and cooking. My Favorite movie is The
Big Lebowski and my favorite food is sushi.
Say hello Lindsay Buckner, one of the valets and Fairway Café attendants. I am from a small town in Western Michigan and moved here from Charleston, South Carolina. I went to school to be a nursing assistant. I enjoy travelling, new experiences and meeting new people. I hope to move to the Asheville after the Cullasaja season ends because I love the atmosphere of such a beautiful city.
Say hello to our new Valet and Bartender, Derek Jolman. I am from Grand Rapids, Michigan and studied Audio Engineering at Arizona State’s Conservatory of Recording Arts & Science. I have spent the last 3.5 years supervising the Sandbar Restaurant and Wild Dunes Resort in Charleston, South Carolina. We had a total of 1100 members on property and I truly enjoy working in the club atmosphere. I
hope to find a good club to work for in Asheville once the Cullasaja season ends in order to continue to grow in this industry.
Welcome back Denise Vanderbilt. I am originally from upstate New York and I moved to North Carolina in 1993. I made my way to Highlands in 2003 and began working at Cullasaja 8 years ago.
