All parents want their children to succeed, and one of the simplest

ways to ensure your child’s academic success is by making a

quick trip to the library. September is Library Card Sign-up

Month, a time when the Pottsville Free Public Library joins with

the American Library Association and public libraries nationwide

to make sure that every student has the most important school

supply of all – a free library card.

Resources at the Pottsville Library are available to anyone who

has a library card. Students can turn to the library for materials,

programs, and services that support academic achievement.

Students can use their library cards from home too. Our library

offers access to important educational resources, like Power Li-

brary, online databases and books, and Ask Here PA, an online

reference service.

Our library provides all types of students a welcoming atmos-

phere where they can explore, discover, and create. Students learn

in a variety of ways. Thanks to the resources available at the li-

brary, we can meet the needs of all ages and all types of learners.

Through books, programs, magazines, and computer access, the

Library has something for everyone – all with a free library card.

It is for these reasons that a library card is the most important

school supply of all.

For more information on how to sign up for a li-

brary card, visit the Pottsville Library in person or

visit the library online at

The 2014 Summer Reading Club was a success.

The theme for this year was Fizz, Boom, Read!

which was all about science. We had a lot of fun

learning about science during our Thursday

Family Nights. There was a firefighter who

came to talk to the kids and show them all of his

equipment. Another week, the participants

squished, crushed, and mixed food together to

see what it looks like in the stomach. We also

made slime and fake vomit. Finally we did

“eggsperiments” to test the strength of egg

shells.

Over 250 children and teens registered, and Cloe

Moore, Tim Witman, and Lea Oshman won the

grand prizes of $50 worth of books, a $50 Bar-

nes & Noble gift card, and $50 Knoebels ride

tickets, respectively. Congratulations to the win-

ners and thanks to all who participated.

The Fall children’s programming starts the week

of September 15th. On Mondays @ 10:30 AM,

storytime for children ages 3-5 is held. On Mon-

days @ 4:00 PM, we hold a Lego Club for chil-

dren ages 5-12. The Legos are provided, but do-

nations are always welcome! On alternating

Tuesdays @ 6:00 PM are the Teen Advisory

Board, and Teen Writers Group and Teen Illus-

trators Group. Laptime for toddlers ages 17

months-3 years is held Wednesdays @ 10:30

AM. Younger and older siblings are welcomed

at both this and the Storytime. Also, on Thurs-

days @ 4:00 PM a program based on the

American Girl Doll Club is held. Special peri-

odic programs for Family Night (Thursdays @ 6

PM) will be announced as well. The Teen Advi-

sory board will be getting started on their annual

Halloween Haunted House soon, so look for that

in October. For more information on all pro-

grams, check out the library’s website @

www.pottsvillelibrary.org or call

Upcoming Books

Some new books to watch for by some of our fa-

vorite authors are:

Personal by Lee Child. You can leave the army,

but the army doesn’t leave you. Not always. Not

completely, according to Jack Reacher—and sure

enough, the retired military cop is soon pulled

back into service. This time, for the State Depart-

ment and the CIA.

Eye of Heaven by Clive Cussler

and Russell Blake. Husband-and-

wife team Sami and Remi Fargo are

on a climate-control expedition in

the Arctic, when to their astonish-

ment they discover a Viking ship in

the ice, perfectly preserved—and

filled with pre–Columbian artifacts

from Mexico.

The King’s Curse by Philippa Gregory. Book 6

in the series “The Cousins’ War” tells the story of

lady-in-waiting Margaret Pole and her unique

view of King Henry VIII’s stratospheric rise to

power in Tudor England.

Edge of Eternity by Ken Follett. The finale of

the Century Trilogy covers one of the most tu-

multuous eras of all: the 1960s through the 1980s,

encompassing civil rights, assassinations, Viet-

nam, the Berlin Wall, the Cuban Missile Crisis,

presidential impeachment, revolu-

tion—and rock and roll.

Burn by James Patterson and Mi-

chael Ledwidge. Detective Mi-

chael Bennett and his family finally

return to New York City. Bennett

takes over the Outreach Squad in

Harlem and is drawn into an under-

ground criminal world of terrifying

depravity.

An Italian Wife by Ann Hood. The story of Jose-

phine Rimaldi, her joys, sorrows, and passions,

spans more than seven decades. Beginning in turn

-of-the-century Italy with an arranged marriage to

a man the 14 year old does not know or love, and

moving on to America, this is a portrait of a fam-

ily bound by love and tradition.

Rose Gold by Walter Mosley. An Easy Rawlins

mystery set in the Patty Hearst era of radical

black nationalism and political abductions.

Escape by David Baldacci. John Puller is a com-

bat veteran and special agent with the U.S. Army,

the man they call to investigate the toughest

crimes facing the nation. But all his training, all

his experience, all his skills will not prepare him

for his newest case, one that will

force him to hunt down the most

formidable and brilliant prey he

has ever tracked: his own brother.

The Cinderella Murder: An Under

Suspicion Novel by Mary Higgins

Clark & Alafair Burke. This first-

time collaboration kicks off a

brand new suspense series about a

television program featuring cold case murders.

Television producer Laurie Moran is delighted

when the pilot for her reality drama, Under Suspi-

cion, is a success, helping to solve an infamous

murder in the very first episode.

The Burning Room by Michael Connelly. Detec-

tive Harry Bosch and his new partner, rookie De-

tective Lucia Soto, investigate a recent murder

where the trigger was pulled nine years earlier.

When a man succumbs to complications from be-

ing shot by a stray bullet nine years earlier, the

body is still fresh, but all other evidence is virtu-

ally nonexistent. Beginning with the bullet that's

been lodged for years in the victim's spine, they

must pull new leads from years-old information,

which soon reveal that this shoot-

ing may have been anything but

random.

Also watch for:

Flesh & Blood: A Scarpetta Novel

by Patricia Cornwell.

The Job: A Novel (Fox and

O’Hare) by Janet Evanovich &

Lee Goldberg.

The Handsome Man's DeLuxe Café: No. 1 Ladies'

Detective Agency by Alexander McCall Smith.

The Girl Next Door by Ruth Rendell.

To reserve any of these titles, call the Library or

stop by the circulation desk.
