Your Arts & Crafts Center at JBLM is alive and well at McChord Field. Even though the location is farther
north than most MWR facilities, you can find excellent service, knowledgeable staff and tax-free products in one custom frame, embroidery and gift shop.
“We want everyone to know that we will do everything we can to accommodate our
current and potential customers,” says Lesley Hill, Arts & Crafts Center manager.
A lot of customers are, in fact, taking advantage of customer service that reaches out
to them. Those who have recurring custom orders — quarterly awards, going-aways,
signs, labels and annual plaques — simply phone or email in their orders. The staff
then locates their files to find their preferences for mats, frames, engraving typestyles
and accompanying photos or graphics.
Hill says that if you want to learn how to do your own matting and framing, you
can arrange for one-on-one afternoon instruction Monday through Friday. The begin-
ning class is two-and-a-half hours long. If you have a group that wants to take a class,
ask about a group discount.
“The advantage to knowing how to create and assemble your own mats and frames
is that you can get it done on your own schedule and save money, too,” Hill says. “You
can come here to assemble your projects when you plan ahead for the gifts, awards or
displays you’ll be needing throughout the year.”
You’ll also find loads of ideas for creative projects when you walk through the doors.
Intricately laser-cut butterflies and other decorations hang on strings from the ceiling.
Walls are filled with a huge assortment of custom matted, framed, engraved and em-
bellished project samples. Display cases feature printed mugs, colorful acrylic awards,
JBLM pewter ornaments and memorabilia. The embroidery shop displays embroidered
caps, chef aprons, guidons, colors, baby blankets, T-shirts and much more.
If you haven’t yet visited your Arts & Crafts Center at McChord Field, plan to stop
by and get inspired for your next project.
The Arts & Crafts Center is located at 1121 Barnes Blvd. Call 253-982-6726 for more

Family & the homefront
By Antoinette Daniels
School Support Specialist
he beginning of a new school year can be an exciting
time for students as they look forward to joining their friends
after summer vacation. Help your child transition from the days
of staying up late and sleeping in the next morning by gradually
changing their schedule in the weeks before school starts.
Here are a few ideas to help transition back to school and pro-
mote a year full of successful school experiences.
Make the summer-to-school transition easier for
elementary school students
1. Move bedtime back a half-hour each week a month before
school starts until you reach the desired bedtime for your
child.
2. Talk to your child about expectations (yours and theirs) for
the school year.
3. Organize your child’s school supplies and backpack one week
before school starts.
4. Help your child pick out clothes for school.
Move over summer! A new school year is coming.

Although many of us will never know what it’s like to lose a son, daughter,
brother, sister, father or mother in combat, as a community, many of us have
mourned the loss of a hero, a friend, a colleague, a teammate or a defender of
our nation’s freedom whom we’ve never met but will always remember.
As each month passes, we remember the Fallen and honor our Gold Star Fami-
lies. There are two pins our Survivors adorn: the Gold Star Lapel Button and the
Next of Kin of Deceased Personnel Lapel Button.
The Gold Star Lapel Button is a symbol, designated for eligible survivors of
Service Members who have lost their lives during any armed hostilities in which
the United States was engaged, dating back to World War I. This now includes
Service Members who lose their lives while deployed in support of military
operations against the enemy or during an international terrorist attack. This
symbol consists of a gold star on a purple background, bordered in gold and sur-
rounded by gold laurel leaves.
The Next of Kin of Deceased Personnel Lapel Button is designated for eligible
survivors of Service Members who lose their lives while serving honorably un-
der circumstances not defined above. This includes Service Members who lose
their lives while assigned to a Reserve or National Guard unit in a drill status.
It is authorized for issue retroactive to March 29, 1973. This symbol consists of
a gold star within a circle that commemorates his or her honorable service. The
gold star is also surrounded by sprigs of oak that represent the branches of the
Armed Forces.
For additional information, visit GoldStarPins.org. If you’re a survivor or know
someone who needs assistance, please contact the JBLM Survivor Outreach Ser-
vices at 253-967-7501 or 1-866-963-2538.

12 Months of Sustainability Joint Base Lewis-McChord celebrates sustainability all year round. Join us each month as we explore topics related to sustainability & Net Zero.
How you can help preserve JBLM’s ecosystemsBe water wise when watering your lawn or washing your car. Water only on your designated days and only as much as your lawn needs. Wash your car at a dedicated car wash facility or on a pervious surface such as grass. Runoff from these actions is one of the largest con-tributors to pollution in our waters, which affects the ecosystems of creeks, rivers, lakes and the Puget Sound. Visit bewatersmart.info for details.
Slow down for your safety and wildlife’s safety. Exceeding the speed limit makes your reaction time much slower when wildlife enters the roadway.
Coordinate with Range Support and comply with any posted signs or Seibert stake when using JBLM training areas for recreational purposes such as bicycling, fishing or horseback riding. JBLM prairies are home to three endangered species and continued training depends on everyone’s proper use of the training areas. Family & the homefront
Family Readiness Groups take noteUnit Family Readiness Group leaders,
mark Monday, Aug. 4 at 8 a.m. on your
calendars. You’ll be able to reserve the
Family Resource Center for your recurring
FRG meetings (for fiscal year 2015) on
this date.
The time period is October 2014–Sep-
tember 2015, excluding Dec. 2014, which
is reserved for holiday parties only.
How it works: Beginning at 8 a.m. on
Aug. 4, those interested in making a FRG
recurring reservation will randomly pick a
number in a lottery-style drawing. After ev-
eryone present receives a number, reserva-
tions will be made beginning with No. 1.
Once the initial reservation lottery is
finished, all reservations will follow the
Family Resource Center policy of first-
come, first-served.
This is a change from years past and is
intended to give a fair opportunity to all
eligible FRGs.
Other groups that are eligible to use the FRC will have their FY15 reservations open Tuesday, Aug. 5 during normal business hours of 8 a.m.–4:30 p.m. All reservations must be made in person.
If you’re interested in holding your unit’s holiday party at the FRC, the reservation process will follow the same lottery-style as recurring meetings.
To book your December holiday party, be at the FRC Monday, Oct. 6 at 8 a.m. Holiday parties will be scheduled daily in the following four-hour blocks: 10 a.m.– 2 p.m. 2–6 p.m. and 6–10 p.m.
In scheduling both recurring meet-ings and holiday parties, camping out overnight is not encouraged and won’t guarantee a first-come, first-served op-
portunity.

AUGUST IS NET ZERO LAND MONTH
JBLM Forestry: JBLM was the first designated public land certified as a well-managed forest in accordance with the Forest Stewardship Council criteria. Roughly 100,000 trees are planted annually. This is equivalent to removing about 2,500 tons of CO2 per planting per year. Forty percent of net timber sales is given to Pierce and Thurston counties for roads and schools — $594,000 was given last year.

Family & the homefront
By Cindy Spano
JBLM reference librarian
Summer’s almost over and many of us, kids and adults alike, will be heading back
to school soon. JBLM libraries can make doing school projects, writing reports and
research papers and studying for exams a whole lot easier.
As a library account holder, you have access to a wide variety of resources, both in-
library and online, that can help you excel as a student.
Getting a head start on preparing for what’s ahead is as easy as stopping by a JBLM
library and registering for a library account. While you’re there, browse our collections
of books, videos, audiobooks and more to become familiar with what’s available.
Next stop: the JBLM library homepage — JBLMmwr.com/libraries. From there, you
can use the online catalog to continue browsing our collection from afar or search for
a specific title. Plus, by clicking on the Research tab on our homepage, you can view a
complete list of all the online resources we have available. It’s a big list that includes
tutoring and test-prep databases, ebooks, eaudiobooks, reference materials and lots
of great research databases where you can find articles for those upcoming research
projects.
Preparation is a great way to smooth the way for another great school year, so take
advantage of the resources available to you and visit a JBLM library soon!
Attend great events at McChord LibraryPrepare for cooler temps with a DIY hat & scarf
It’s hard to believe, but fall will be here before we know it. Prepare your Family for cooler weather and make a fashion statement with a handmade hat or scarf. McChord Library is being invaded by teens (and tweens) after the doors close at 6 p.m. The invasion can’t be stopped. It can only be contained — for about an hour.
Snacks will be provided in order to keep the wild masses nourished while they participate in a wide range of activ-ities including crafts, games, videogame tournaments, creating teen displays, zombie make-up and henna body art.
Don’t fear, the invasion only takes place once a month. Join us on the first Thursday of every month, starting with Sept. 4, 6 p.m. All teens are welcome! Everyone else, you’ve been warned! For more information, call 253-982-3454.
