Enjoy the last long days of summer with us! At JBLM Family & MWR, we have the fun events and

activities for you to make the most of the sunshine and down time. From lakeside outdoor movies (page 8) and splashing fun at myriad lo-

cations, you’re sure to have so much fun, this summer will be one to beat! If you love a good adventure, head out on a trek or paddle with the

JBLM Outdoor Recreation program. All trips are led by seasoned adven-ture guides, so flip to page 24 to get trip descriptions and registration details. Then sign up, grab snacks and a camera and join us outside.

If you’re looking for a place to grab a tasty treat or a good meal, turn to the Food & fun section starting on page 6 for all the details.

Then, make sure your memories last — get your summer photos framed at the Arts & Crafts Center. Pay the professionals or take a DIY class to learn to frame. Turn to page 12 for the details.

Of course, the end of summer means it’s time for back-to-school season. Prepare for the next school year with quick tips from School Support Ser-vices on page 14. Don’t forget your JBLM librarians are standing to assist students of all ages. Turn to page 22 for more information.

As always, I value your feedback. Share your thoughts at http://ice.disa.mil.

Your Arts & Crafts Center at JBLM is alive and well at McChord Field. Even though the location is farther

north than most MWR facilities, you can find excellent service, knowledgeable staff and tax-free products in one custom frame, embroidery and gift shop.

“We want everyone to know that we will do everything we can to accommodate our

current and potential customers,” says Lesley Hill, Arts & Crafts Center manager.

A lot of customers are, in fact, taking advantage of customer service that reaches out

to them. Those who have recurring custom orders — quarterly awards, going-aways,

signs, labels and annual plaques — simply phone or email in their orders. The staff

then locates their files to find their preferences for mats, frames, engraving typestyles

and accompanying photos or graphics.

Hill says that if you want to learn how to do your own matting and framing, you

can arrange for one-on-one afternoon instruction Monday through Friday. The begin-

ning class is two-and-a-half hours long. If you have a group that wants to take a class,

ask about a group discount.

“The advantage to knowing how to create and assemble your own mats and frames

is that you can get it done on your own schedule and save money, too,” Hill says. “You

can come here to assemble your projects when you plan ahead for the gifts, awards or

displays you’ll be needing throughout the year.”

You’ll also find loads of ideas for creative projects when you walk through the doors.

Intricately laser-cut butterflies and other decorations hang on strings from the ceiling.

Walls are filled with a huge assortment of custom matted, framed, engraved and em-

bellished project samples. Display cases feature printed mugs, colorful acrylic awards,

JBLM pewter ornaments and memorabilia. The embroidery shop displays embroidered

caps, chef aprons, guidons, colors, baby blankets, T-shirts and much more.

If you haven’t yet visited your Arts & Crafts Center at McChord Field, plan to stop

by and get inspired for your next project.

The Arts & Crafts Center is located at 1121 Barnes Blvd. Call 253-982-6726 for more

information.

Family & the homefront

By Antoinette Daniels

School Support Specialist

he beginning of a new school year can be an exciting

time for students as they look forward to joining their friends

after summer vacation. Help your child transition from the days

of staying up late and sleeping in the next morning by gradually

changing their schedule in the weeks before school starts.

Here are a few ideas to help transition back to school and pro-

mote a year full of successful school experiences.

Make the summer-to-school transition easier for

elementary school students

1. Move bedtime back a half-hour each week a month before

school starts until you reach the desired bedtime for your

child.

2. Talk to your child about expectations (yours and theirs) for

the school year.

3. Organize your child’s school supplies and backpack one week

before school starts.

4. Help your child pick out clothes for school.

Move over summer! A new school year is coming.

about going to school.

2. Talk to your child about after-school activities she would like

to participate in and make necessary arrangements.

Although many of us will never know what it’s like to lose a son, daughter,

brother, sister, father or mother in combat, as a community, many of us have

mourned the loss of a hero, a friend, a colleague, a teammate or a defender of

our nation’s freedom whom we’ve never met but will always remember.

As each month passes, we remember the Fallen and honor our Gold Star Fami-

lies. There are two pins our Survivors adorn: the Gold Star Lapel Button and the

Next of Kin of Deceased Personnel Lapel Button.

The Gold Star Lapel Button is a symbol, designated for eligible survivors of

Service Members who have lost their lives during any armed hostilities in which

the United States was engaged, dating back to World War I. This now includes

Service Members who lose their lives while deployed in support of military

operations against the enemy or during an international terrorist attack. This

symbol consists of a gold star on a purple background, bordered in gold and sur-

rounded by gold laurel leaves.

The Next of Kin of Deceased Personnel Lapel Button is designated for eligible

survivors of Service Members who lose their lives while serving honorably un-

der circumstances not defined above. This includes Service Members who lose

their lives while assigned to a Reserve or National Guard unit in a drill status.

It is authorized for issue retroactive to March 29, 1973. This symbol consists of

a gold star within a circle that commemorates his or her honorable service. The

gold star is also surrounded by sprigs of oak that represent the branches of the

Armed Forces.

For additional information, visit GoldStarPins.org. If you’re a survivor or know

someone who needs assistance, please contact the JBLM Survivor Outreach Ser-

vices at 253-967-7501 or 1-866-963-2538.

12 Months of Sustainability Joint Base Lewis-McChord celebrates sustainability all year round. Join us each month as we explore topics related to sustainability & Net Zero.

How you can help preserve JBLM’s ecosystemsBe water wise when watering your lawn or washing your car. Water only on your designated days and only as much as your lawn needs. Wash your car at a dedicated car wash facility or on a pervious surface such as grass. Runoff from these actions is one of the largest con-tributors to pollution in our waters, which affects the ecosystems of creeks, rivers, lakes and the Puget Sound. Visit bewatersmart.info for details.

Slow down for your safety and wildlife’s safety. Exceeding the speed limit makes your reaction time much slower when wildlife enters the roadway.

Coordinate with Range Support and comply with any posted signs or Seibert stake when using JBLM training areas for recreational purposes such as bicycling, fishing or horseback riding. JBLM prairies are home to three endangered species and continued training depends on everyone’s proper use of the training areas. Family & the homefront

Family Readiness Groups take noteUnit Family Readiness Group leaders,

mark Monday, Aug. 4 at 8 a.m. on your

calendars. You’ll be able to reserve the

Family Resource Center for your recurring

FRG meetings (for fiscal year 2015) on

this date.

The time period is October 2014–Sep-

tember 2015, excluding Dec. 2014, which

is reserved for holiday parties only.

How it works: Beginning at 8 a.m. on

Aug. 4, those interested in making a FRG

recurring reservation will randomly pick a

number in a lottery-style drawing. After ev-

eryone present receives a number, reserva-

tions will be made beginning with No. 1.

Once the initial reservation lottery is

finished, all reservations will follow the

Family Resource Center policy of first-

come, first-served.

This is a change from years past and is

intended to give a fair opportunity to all

eligible FRGs.

Other groups that are eligible to use the FRC will have their FY15 reservations open Tuesday, Aug. 5 during normal business hours of 8 a.m.–4:30 p.m. All reservations must be made in person.

If you’re interested in holding your unit’s holiday party at the FRC, the reservation process will follow the same lottery-style as recurring meetings.

To book your December holiday party, be at the FRC Monday, Oct. 6 at 8 a.m. Holiday parties will be scheduled daily in the following four-hour blocks: 10 a.m.– 2 p.m. 2–6 p.m. and 6–10 p.m.

In scheduling both recurring meet-ings and holiday parties, camping out overnight is not encouraged and won’t guarantee a first-come, first-served op-

portunity.

Celebrating Make a Difference DayIt’s not too early to start thinking

about a Make A Difference Day project.

Make A Difference Day is the most encom-

passing national day of helping others,

and you’re encouraged to participate at

JBLM.

Held annually on the fourth Saturday

in October, millions of Americans rally

into a single day of action to help change

the world.

Share your community spirit at JBLM

by getting your unit, organization and/or

co-workers involved in Make A Difference

Day, Saturday, Oct. 25.

Everyone can participate! Find a need

in your community and use the power of

Make A Difference Day to mobilize your

Family, neighbors or your entire commu-

nity into a day of action.

AUGUST IS NET ZERO LAND MONTH

JBLM Forestry: JBLM was the first designated public land certified as a well-managed forest in accordance with the Forest Stewardship Council criteria. Roughly 100,000 trees are planted annually. This is equivalent to removing about 2,500 tons of CO2 per planting per year. Forty percent of net timber sales is given to Pierce and Thurston counties for roads and schools — $594,000 was given last year.

Family & the homefront

By Cindy Spano

JBLM reference librarian

Summer’s almost over and many of us, kids and adults alike, will be heading back

to school soon. JBLM libraries can make doing school projects, writing reports and

research papers and studying for exams a whole lot easier.

As a library account holder, you have access to a wide variety of resources, both in-

library and online, that can help you excel as a student.

Getting a head start on preparing for what’s ahead is as easy as stopping by a JBLM

library and registering for a library account. While you’re there, browse our collections

of books, videos, audiobooks and more to become familiar with what’s available.

Next stop: the JBLM library homepage — JBLMmwr.com/libraries. From there, you

can use the online catalog to continue browsing our collection from afar or search for

a specific title. Plus, by clicking on the Research tab on our homepage, you can view a

complete list of all the online resources we have available. It’s a big list that includes

tutoring and test-prep databases, ebooks, eaudiobooks, reference materials and lots

of great research databases where you can find articles for those upcoming research

projects.

Preparation is a great way to smooth the way for another great school year, so take

advantage of the resources available to you and visit a JBLM library soon!

Attend great events at McChord LibraryPrepare for cooler temps with a DIY hat & scarf

It’s hard to believe, but fall will be here before we know it. Prepare your Family for cooler weather and make a fashion statement with a handmade hat or scarf. Learn to make your own hats and scarves Thursdays, Aug. 7–28 at the McChord Library at 4:30 p.m. This class is open to everyone ages 12 and older. Supplies will be provided.

Registration begins Friday, Aug. 1. To sign up, visit JBLMmwr.com/libraries and click on “Calendar of Events.” Teens, come take over the library after it closes!

McChord Library is being invaded by teens (and tweens) after the doors close at 6 p.m. The invasion can’t be stopped. It can only be contained — for about an hour.

Snacks will be provided in order to keep the wild masses nourished while they participate in a wide range of activ-ities including crafts, games, videogame tournaments, creating teen displays, zombie make-up and henna body art.

Don’t fear, the invasion only takes place once a month. Join us on the first Thursday of every month, starting with Sept. 4, 6 p.m. All teens are welcome! Everyone else, you’ve been warned! For more information, call 253-982-3454.

Be a Novel Navigator — join book clubThe McChord Novel Navigators is an

adult discussion group that meets the second Wednesday of the month begin-ning Sept. 10. Join us at the McChord Library at 4:30 p.m. in the conference room. Advanced registration is required in person at the library beginning Wednesday, Aug. 27. Copies of the coming month’s title, “Mr. Penumbra’s 24-Hour Book Store” by Robin Sloan will be available at the circulation desk. For more information, call 253-982-3454.

If you’re heading to the classroom when summer vacation ends, turn to the JBLM libraries for your back-to-school study needs.

Lake each September turns the Tieton Riv-

er into a big wave, class- III+ roller coaster.

With steep gradient and guaranteed water,

a whitewater Tieton River trip offers non-

stop action from start to finish. Take the

wild ride Saturday, Sept. 13. Grilled din-

ner included. Difficulty: class III; distance:

18 miles; paddle time: 2.5 hours. Minimum

age: 10. ($125)

Raft the White Salmon River Raft down

the White Salmon River Sunday, Aug. 17.

Along the trip, you’ll experience numer-

ous class-III rapids until you reach the

end of the trip and the legendary 10-foot-

high Husum Falls (dependent on water

levels, class-IV). Minimum age: 10. ($110)

Skydiving Imagine the thrill of jump-

ing from an altitude of up to 13,000

feet! Skydive over Washington Satur-

day, Aug. 23. Feel the adrenaline rush

of freefall, and experience the roaring

sound of the wind. Wearing a harness

connected directly to the tandem para-

chute system, you and your instructor

will jump together and accelerate to 120

mph, freefalling for about 60 seconds.

At about 5,000 feet, your instructor will

open the parachute, and then you can

assist in steering the parachute during

the 4–6 minute ride down. Gear, in-

struction and transportation provided.

Minimum age: 18. ($225)

Snoqualmie Tunnel bike ride Take a ride

through the Snoqualmie Tunnel — it’s

nearly 2 miles long — with us Satur-

day, Sept. 6. From there, we’ll snake our

way around the hills and over old train

trestles on the way to Rattlesnake Lake.

The best part? It’s all downhill! Diffi-

culty: easy; distance: 20 miles; ride time:

3 hours. Trip fee includes guide, bike,

helmet, gloves and headlamp. Minimum

age: 14. ($50)

Visit Seattle Outlets & Tulalip Casino This trip to the Seattle Premium Outlet

Mall in Marysville is for the serious bar-

gain-hunter. On Saturday, Aug. 30, spend

a full day with us browsing stores such as

Oakley Vault, The North Face, Coach and

Chico’s. If you get tired of shopping, a

short walk will bring you to Tulalip Resort

Casino. The trip fee includes round-trip

transportation. ($35)

Waterfall tour Explore the greatest

concentration of waterfalls in the conti-

nental United States Saturday, Aug. 30.

We’ll travel along the Historic Columbia

River Highway, which has an abundance

of small waterfalls viewable from the

road. On our trip, we’ll stop at at least

five major waterfalls to include the world

famous Multnomah Falls, which plunges

more than 620 feet from its origins. Plus,

we’ll break for lunch in Hood River, Ore.

The trip fee includes round-trip transpor-

tation. ($65; ages 5-12: $40; Infants Ages

0-4: $15)
