    ONAM Saturday, September 6, 2014

Onam (Sravana in Sanskrit) is also the day of Vamana Jayanti. It is on that day that Lord Vishnu took the form of a dwarf (Vamana) to suppress the ego of an otherwise good and popular king Mahabali (Grandson of Prahalada). The king loved his subjects very much and hence asked the Lord to allow him to visit

his subjects once a year on that day. Hence this day is celebrated in Kerala as the return of their favorite king. The homes are beautifully decorated and there is an ambience of festivity everywhere in anticipation of the Return of the King. Boat races, floral decorations, cultural performances like Mohini Aattam, Kathakali, Chaakiyaar Koothu, music concerts are common during this festival. Some communities consider this to be the beginning of a new year. Temples in Kerala have special pujas on this day.10:00 am Purvanga Puja, Anantapadmanabha Abhishekam, Vishnu Sa-

Mahalaya Paksha Tuesday, September 9 Tuesday, September 23, 2014The fortnight (15 days) preceding the Navaratri is known as Mahalaya Paksha or Pitr Paksha. This period is important for honoring our ancestors. Men, whose fathers have passed away, offer their obeiscence (shraddha) to their ancestors during this period. The ceremony is performed as a Hiranya Shrad-dha, details of which are available in the temple. Due to the increasing awareness and faith in these rituals and in order to meet the needs of maximum number of devotees the temple is scheduling time slots of half hour duration for 3 or more hours per day during this fortnight. Please call the manager to reserve your slot. A donation of $95 which includes Dakshina to the priest applies for this ceremony.

  • 5SSVT will be celebrating the Annual Haridaasa Day (Haridasa Aradhane) for the first time on Saturday, October 11th 2014. Haridaasas are singing minstrels from Karnataka region who created a bhakti movement in the region starting from 13th century , travelled the entire region and staying at different places, composing and singing songs praising Lord Vishnu. These compositions are known as Devara naamas or songs of the Lord. These songs are simple to understand and convey the bhakti as well as principles for good living and ethics to the common man. The Haridaasa lineage was started and inspired by the devotional compositions of Sri Madhvaacharya and his disciple Sri Narahari Thirtha. Haridaasa compositions and practices were formalized by Sripaada Rajaru. Most well known among Haridaasas is Sri Purandara daasa, who also formalized the Carnatic music teaching and is known as the father of Carnatic music. Other well known Haridaasas in the linegage are Sri Kanaka daasa, Sri Vijaya daasa, Sri Gopala daasa and Sri Jagannatha daasa. Haridaasa lineage continues to the present day. Araadhaya devata of Haridaasas was Panduranga Vittala at Pandharaapura in Maharaashtra. The Haridaasa Day will celebrate the contributions of Haridaasas to the bhakti literature, Carnatic music and the spiritual advancement of devotees and aspirants throughout the world. Program consists of Mettilotsava (a devotional singing practice of Haridaasas consisting of walking the steps of Tirumala while singing the Devara naamas), followed by full day of singing of compositions of Haridaasas. The event will have some special programs on Haridaasas in the afternoon

Swathi Thirunal Music FestivalSaturday, Sepember 20

Sri Swathi Thirunal Rama Varma was the Maharaja of the state of Travancore in India. Besides being an able ruler, he was a patron of music and a musician himself. He encouraged both broad systems of Indian music, Hindustani and Carnatic music, though he was essentially a connoisseur of the Carnatic music tradition. He is credited with composing over 400 compositions in Carnatic music as well as Hindustani music. The king was fluent in a number of languages such as Malayalam, Sanskrit, Hindi, Marathi, Telugu, Kannada, Bengali, Tamil, Oriya and English. The festival will begin with a customary group singing of Bhavayami Raghuramam ragamalika and a few hindustani compositions of Swathi Thirunal (practice sessions will be coordinated by T. Prabhakar). Several group and individual performances will be conducted all day. For further information, please contact the Event Coordinator Sri.M.G.Menon ([email protected]) or T. Prabhakar ([email protected]).

    JEERNODHARANA KUMBHABHISHEKAM 2015May 31- June 7, 2015 (Tentative)

Preserving, restoring, and growing our temple

In 2015, in accordance with the sastras, 12 years after the last major restoration project, the temple will celebrate its Jeernodharana Kumbhabhishekam. Shilpis from India arrive in Fall 2014 to begin the work and the grand celebration will take place in late May-June 2015. The necessary repair works and embellishments will cover the Rajagopuram, all Vimanas including Kalasas and the entire interior of the temple including sannidhis. A noteworthy feature of this project will be the construction of a new meditation hall, classrooms and paduka mandapam in the current Balalaya premises. The project will culminate with a grand festival consisting of religious ceremonies, cultural events, educational sessions and social service programs. This is a million dollar undertaking and one of the finest opportunites for those who were not at the original founding to vest in the temple and have ownership in it. So, we have created a unique program. Please make a donation now and pledge to do the same in 2015 so we can complete each aspect of the rejuvenation of the temple. Your donations will go into a fund for this purpose and will be credited towards sponsorship of the 2015 Kumbhabhishekam.
