he growth of new technology in
the gas, oil and mining markets is
impressive. Im constantly hearing
about companies that have developed new
and better ways of meeting the everyday
needs of this industry.
In the past Ive written about the need
to tell the industrys positive stories, tooffer a counterpoint to sensational news
reports of tanker spills and groundwater
contamination claims. Those things
happen, but they certainly dont represent
the whole story.
Its easy for the average person
especially those with little background or
understanding to develop misconceptions
about the oil and gas industry. The whole
industry, to many, gets boiled down to a
handful of giant multinational corporations
exploiting the earths resources for private
gain. But everyone in this industry knows
theres so much more to it.
For one, all those people are users of
the products derived from these resources.
We fuel our vehicles, heat our homes, and use thousands of petroleum-based
products in our everyday lives. How
many of those people
would be up for cutting
plastics out of their lives?
For eliminating one of
the most ubiquitous
manufacturing materials
in the world? For gettingrid of their toothbrushes
and phones and the
packaging that keeps their food fresh?
And how many people would want to see
plastics eliminated from medical facilities?
How many would be willing to say good-
bye to modern life?
Everything in this industry is not
perfect, but it would be interesting to
see a reporter balance astory about suspected well
water contaminat ion with
some information about
the products that are made
from the oil coming out
of those fracking fields. I
watched a news report the
other day about this very
issue it is a serious issue and was struck by one
minor detail: The people who
were claiming their water
problems were related to gas
and oil industry practices
were bringing outside water back to theirhomes in plastic containers. Theres a
certain level of irony there.
Hotshot drivers arent going to
solve this. Hydroexcavation firms arent
going to change public perception. And
containment service providers arent going
to eliminate media bias. Together, however,
the innovations coming from these service
providers are changing the industry, andthey can help tell a different story to those
outside the industry.
There are so many stories right
here in this magazine that show how
contractors are reducing environmental
impact by limiting traffic in and out of
oilfields, how water is being recycled on
site in environmentally friendly ways,
how flare gas is being captured and used
to run generators and other equipmentin the field, how old pipe is being turned
into new products, how new materials are
making pipelines safer, and how better
containment barriers are preventing
contamination before it happens.
This months Money Machines feature
highlights a company that has developed a
much more efficient way to decontaminate
oil refinery equipment. The company hasdeveloped and fabricated its own closed-
loop, trailer-mounted, chemical circulation
unit that significantly reduces the amount
of on-site equipment and manpower
required for cleaning projects. Its a great
example of how innovation is coming from
all parts of the industry. And its a story
were proud to tell in GOMC.
Enjoy this months issue. GOMC

Introducing the firstportable multi gas detector
with a battery life of months
instead of hours.
Only the Multi Gas Clip can last 2 monthswithout a charge. Without ever turning it off.
Day in, day out, your workers have to charge their portable multi gas
detectors so they can keep testing for the presence of combustible gases,
H2S, CO and O2. Unfortunately, sometimes they may forget to do so. Gas
Clip Technologies can help prevent this safety risk with our Multi Gas Clip
(MGC). It has the longest battery life of any portable gas detector by a long
shot.
The MGC can go a full 2 months without a charge - without ever having
to be turned off. Shut down the unit nightly, and the battery can last up to
4 months. Whats the secret of the MGCs extended battery life? It uses
low-power photo-metric technology for the detection of combustible gases
(LEL). Instead of draining the battery with archaic pellistor technology, the
MGC uses an IR source. This conserves power, so the battery lasts and
lasts and lasts.
The MGC also eliminates the need to frequently calibrate portable gas
detectors. It can go 6 months without being calibrated. The MGC Dock allows
you to test or calibrate 4 units at once - saving time and increasing efficiency.
With its reliable performance, the MGC makes maintenance fees a thingof the past. Theres no need to return and repair the units. If theres ever a
problem, call us, and if we cant fix it over the phone, send the unit back and
well send you a new one at no charge.
To learn more about the MGC, visit our website or call 877.525.0808
today. Why charge your portable multi gas detectors every day when once
every 2 months will do? Call now.
Calibrate the unit every 6 months instead of daily or monthly.
A battery life that lasts 2 months instead of 24 hours.

n 2013, officials at AIMS/PVIC LLC received an
emergency call from a molybdenum-processing plant
at an Arizona mine, where a blocked transfer pipe had
halted production.
Confined-space entry crews from the industrialand municipal cleaning company swung into action,
knowing full well that every hour of downtime was costing the
customer significant revenue. Working around the clock in 12-hour
shifts, the crews used a 20,000 psi Jetstream hydroblasting unit
to clean out a clogged filter, a 500,000-gallon thickener tank and
transfer lines emerging from the tank.
It was a high-priority job because it was holding up
production, says Chris Mihaletos, the president and a minority
owner of the company. It took about two days to get the
job done. When we finished, we got a big atta boy from the
mine supervisors.
Helping out customers in jams at mines throughout the
western United States, as well as at power plants, is nothing new
for AIMS/PVIC, the corporate parent of three companies: AIMS
LLC (industrial hydroblasting and vacuuming services), Pipeline
Video Inspection & Cleaning (PVIC) LLC (sewer cleaning,
video inspections and hydroexcavating) and AIMS Coatings LLC
(industrial-coating services). Headquartered in Phoenix, AIMS/
PVIC is a certified Womens Business Enterprise; Maria Mihaletos,
the wife of Chris Mihaletos, is the companys majority owner and
chief executive officer. Our philosophy is that were only as good as our last job,
Mihaletos says. Its critical that we finish each job on time and
safely. We know we have competition every single day, so we work
as hard as we can every single day to finish projects on time and
within budget and build relationships with customers.
SERVICES IN DEMAND
One of the companys specialties involves helping customers in
Arizona and New Mexico reopen dormant open-pit copper mines,
a move spurred by rising copper prices. AIMS/PVIC employees
provide multiple services, including hydroexcavating to safely
expose underground utilities; hydroblasting steel tanks and other
vessels for strength testing or lead-paint abatement; and recoating
tanks and vessels, Mihaletos says.
Some of these mines have opened and closed several times in
the last 10 years as copper prices fluctuated, he explains. Weve

already performed two openings in the last 10 years and each one can take a year
or more to complete so weve gained a lot of knowledge with this, as well as a
good reputation throughout the Southwest. Our management team collectively
offers hundreds of years of experience.
We might do hydroexcavating
to safely determine the location of
underground lines in mines, he
continues. Often there are minimal
records of where things like electrical,
water and transfer lines are located.
We also hydroblast steel
thickener tanks to clean them for
inspections and ensure they meet
environmental standards for asbestos
and lead abatement, he adds. Ourcrews perform confined-space cleaning
in tanks with up to 1-million-gallon
capacities. A large mine might have
10 to 15 of these tanks, while smaller
mines might have three to five.
After hydroblasting the tanks,
crews use vacuum trucks to suck up the resulting debris. Depending on the
post-cleaning condition of a tank, mine engineers might ask AIMS to sandblast
the interior down to white metal, which provides a surface thats suitable for
recoating. We can coat the tanks with virtually anything they want, he notes.
In other instances, AIMS gets called in to clean up acid spills; copper
mines use acid in the process of chemically treating the ore. Sometimes a
pipe breaks or leaks, and we come in with protective suits and use our Guzzler
vacuum trucks, which have stainless steel tanks, Mihaletos points out.
Our turnkey operation offers a big advantage, Mihaletos adds. Were
also known for having well-trained employees and a good safety record. This
is critical because when a mine is down, its losing hundreds of thousands of
dollars in lost production. Our operators are trained to go out there and get the
job done quickly and safely.
EXPANSION THROUGH ACQUISITION
AIMS/PVIC was established in 2005 when Chris and Maria Mihaletos
bought PVIC. In 2007, they acquired AIMS, which primarily provides
hydroblasting, industrial vacuuming/cleaning and steel-and-concrete cutting
services. About six months later, the Mihaletoses purchased a related industrial-
coatings company, AIMS Coatings.
After those three acquisitions, we decided that due to the volatile
[economic] climate, we would hold off on further acquisitions and grow
organically, says Chris Mihaletos. From 2008 to 2014, weve grown into a
multimillion-dollar-a-year company [in terms of gross revenues].
As the company grew, so did its fleet of equipment. Mihaletos says the
company has invested more than $15 million in machines and vehicles,
including nine Guzzler and Supersucker vacuum trucks (made by Guzzler
Manufacturing, a subsidiary of Federal Signal Corp., and Super Products,

Were always upgrading and updating our
equipment, Mihaletos notes. Our goal is to be
the leader in our industries and advanced, more
productive equipment is key. As an example, he
points to the Jetstream hydroblasters, which are
capable of generating up to 40,000 psi, a level of
pressure that some companies shy away from using
because of the associated risk factors.
Mihaletos also points out that to increase efficiency
and productivity, the company cross-trains employeeson all equipment. We also focus sharply on maintaining
equipment in order to minimize breakdowns which
goes hand in hand with developing good relationships
with customers, he says.
SAFETY COUNTS
On-the-job safety in often risky work environ-
ments poses a constant challenge. As such, the
company works to increase employee awareness by
holding daily safety meetings and periodically sending
out safety shares, where everyone in the company is
notified if an incident occurs.
We tell everyone about it send out a media
blast to all divisions, he says. And project supervisors

share it with everyone in the company. Safety is of paramount importance
above operations and production.
In addition, all new employees first take a three-day, in-house safety training
and orientation class. After that, employees receive equipment-operation
training. The company employs two full-time safety instructors, Mihaletos says.
Moreover, whenever the company starts a new job, most customers also require
eight hours of site-specific safety training. Were trained and approved to work
in every single mine throughout the Southwest, he notes.
AIMS/PVIC is no stranger to working on large projects. For example, its
Northern California PVIC division will be involved for at least the next 15
years in one of the countrys largest cross-bore inspection projects in San
Francisco and the Bay Area. By the time the project concludes around 2030,
PVIC camera trucks will have inspected countless miles of mainline sewers and
lateral service lines at tens of thousands of properties to determine if theyve
been pierced by natural gas service lines installed over the years via trenchless-
installation techniques like horizontal directional drilling, says Steven Hudson,
vice president of AIMS/PVIC.

Were always upgrading and updating our equipment.
Our goal is to be the leader in our industries
and advanced, more productive equipment is key.
Chris Mihaletos
AIMS/PVIC LLC has achieved dramatic growth since the company was
founded in 2005, and the ability to offer customers a wide array of services
has been a critical factor in that expansion, says Chris Mihaletos, a minority
owner and the president of the Phoenix-based business.Customers typically find diversified companies more attractive because
its easier and more efficient to deal with one contractor that can provide
multiple services, as opposed to working with several different contractors
to obtain the same services, Mihaletos says. AIMS/PVIC owns three divisions
that offer the following services: hydroblasting, steel cutting, industrial
vacuum cleaning, pipeline inspections and cleaning, hydroexcavating,
sandblasting and protective-coating application.
Our chief advantage is our ability to provide turnkey operations,
which is a huge advantage to our customer base, he explains. Customers
are more inclined to reach out to one company that can provide all the
required services. Not only is it less expensive, but its easier too, because the
customer doesnt have to deal with, say, four different safety certifications
[for four different contractors], plus four different points of contact, which
requires more time and effort.
It also makes for easier scheduling and communication, he adds. We
all communicate easily with each other because were all under the same
umbrella company. This allows us to better focus on finishing jobs on time
for customers.
Mihaletos also points out that AIMS/PVIC gains efficiencies through
sharing equipment between divisions, which reduces costs. Moreover,
the companys service diversity promotes cross-selling. For instance, afteremployees clean an industrial tank, they might notice that the vessel now
needs sandblasting and recoating services provided by another AIMS/
PVIC division.
We train our crews to constantly educate customers about other
services we can provide, he says.

This is the biggest inspection project weve ever been involved with in
terms of manpower, equipment and revenue, says Hudson. Were in the
third year of the project, which is projected to last another 15 years plus. Weve
already performed approximately 2,000 property inspections in 2012 and 6,000

Weve invested more than $2 million in new equipment, employee
training and local offices for this project, Hudson adds. And we are prepared tocontinue investing as the project grows.
MORE GROWTH EXPECTED
Mihaletos believes that AIMS/PVIC is well-positioned for future growth,
either organically or via more acquisitions. He says the companys management
team is always on the lookout for profitable, stable
businesses that have developed good relationships with
customers.
We are fortunate to have good banking and
capital behind us to aggressively pursue acquisitions,
Mihaletos says. Were looking at good companies that
fit our portfolio of service or that can complement our
core business. We want to focus on what we do best
stick with what we know. We also want to expand
geographically.

econtaminating various oil-refinery equipment pressure vessels,
pipelines, exchangers, condensers and the like used to be an
equipment- and labor-intensive job for crews at Delta Tech Service Inc.,
a national chemical-cleaning company based in Benicia, Calif.
But that changed dramatically when Jeremy Siebels, the companys
project manager and supervisor, fabricated a closed-loop, trailer-mounted,chemical-circulation unit that significantly reduces the amount of on-site
equipment and manpower required for cleaning projects. That, in turn, boosts
long-term productivity because those freed-up workers can instead work on
other projects.
Before, we used three circulation tanks, portable pumps and scrubbers,
all connected with hoses, which increased the risk of leaks because of all
the connections, Siebels explains. This closed-circulation unit minimizes
those risks.
In addition, we also needed more people on site to monitor each tank
and pump and the setup time was quite a bit longer compared to what it is
now, he adds. Depending on the size of a job, we might have needed six to
eight guys and three to four trucks, compared to four guys and one truck now.
Its more cost-effective for our customers too, so its a win-win situation. We
can do more jobs with the same amount of people.
The Delta Tech crews often work during scheduled maintenance
shutdowns at refineries, where speed, safety and efficiency are top of mind.
With so many other contractors also working at the same time, it really helps
that the circulating unit occupies a much smaller footprint the trailer is 8
feet wide and 20 feet long than when the crews needed three separate tanks
and trucks.
We used to take up about triple the space we take up now, notes Siebels,
who studied civil and structural engineering and designed the rig with input
from field crews. And its safer to work too, because there arent so many
hoses to trip on. Plus, the unit includes a work platform [catwalk] instead of

using a ladder welded to the side of a tank, so that offers a much safer way to
monitor the tank.
The unit primarily consists of a centrifugal
pump made by Summit Pump (rated at 2,200 rpm
at 68 psi); two carbon-steel tanks manufactured by
Industrial Service & Fabricators Inc.; and a tandem-
axle trailer fabricated by Pac West Trailer Co. The
larger tank (800-gallon capacity and rated at 100 psi at
200 degrees) holds cleaning solutions; in the smaller
tank (420 gallons rated at 100 psi at 200 degrees),
dangerous gases mainly hydrogen sulfide get
scrubbed, rendering them safe for disposal.
The unit was designed for a gross vehicle weight
of less than 10,000, so drivers do not require a
commercial drivers license (CDL). That gives us a
huge advantage, Siebels says. Were a 24-hour-a-day
company customers could call us at any time. But
since it doesnt require a CDL, all our employees can
drive it.
More often than not, crews at Delta Tech which
also offers hydroblasting, decontamination and vapor-
cleaning services encounter hydrogen sulfide gas on
jobs; its either present as a byproduct of the crude-
oil refining process or produced when crews use acleaner like sulfuric acid. Delta Tech mainly uses the
unit for descaling with acids in oil refineries because
it can scrub the dangerous, highly flammable H2S gas,
but Siebels notes that its designed to be utilized in
aspects of the companys cleaning services. It can
clean with the companys proprietary soap products
or other solutions.
Heres how the unit works: After a cleaning
solution is mixed in the main tank, its pumped
through a refinerys process equipment and returns
to the main tank. The vapors that enter the main tank
are routed to the scrubber tank. The scrubber tank
is filled with a predetermined amount of water and
concentrated sodium hydroxide. As the toxic H2S
vapors bubble through the solution, the resulting chemical reaction dissolves
the vapors.
Multiple valves enable operators to isolate the two tanks and use themindependently, and the inclusion of a third suction point allows crews to use
just the pump alone. GOMC

he protective clothing and work-
wear industry in North Dakota has
seen a big boost from the oil boom
in the Bakken Shale play.
Its by far our biggest area of growth
right now, says Ben Saukko, a spokesman
for AmeriPride. Our production facilities
there are growing exponentially faster thanthe rest of our company. Its really a key
focus area for us.
AmeriPride, headquartered in
Minnesota, is one of the largest uniform
rental and linen supply companies in North
America and the largest in Canada. The
laundering company began operating in
Bismarck, N.D., in the 1970s and opened its
laundering plant in 1982.
The company provides uniforms, laundering services and paper goods to a
number of industries, including automotive
repair, medical, food service and mining, to
name a few.
We have about 115 production
facilities and service centers in the U.S.
and Canada, Saukko says. In Canada the
company is known as Canadian Linen and
Uniform, while in Quebec it is known as
Quebec Linge. Our product lines include uniforms
and flame-resistant apparel, which is of
specific interest in the oil and gas industry
right now. We have towels, rags, floor mats
and we also do restroom supplies andcleaning products, says Saukko.
The volume of new business has led the
company into other ventures in the Bakken
Shale play.
OIL BOOM CHALLENGES
AmeriPride has been in business in
North Dakota for a number of years, even
before the production facility opened in
Bismarck, Saukko says. However, whenoil production boomed, it brought new
challenges for the family-run company.
To deal with the heavily greased
oilfield uniforms, AmeriPrides chemical
and detergent supply company had to come
up with a special formula to get clothes
clean, Saukko says.
We have the facilities now that are
able to clean those uniforms, Saukkosays. Obviously the shelf life of some of
those uniforms may not be as long as other
uniforms in other industries, but we have
the expertise to clean uniforms of all types.
Washers at the Bismarck production
facility can handle between 500 and 1,000
pounds and are run nearly 24 hours a day.
The plant runs two shifts Monday through
Friday, processing about 80 loads of laundry
a day on average.Weve recently added 9,000 square
feet to our footprint at our Bismarck facility,
and we are planning even more future
expansion here in the next couple years,
Saukko says.
Whenever a customer hires a new
employee, AmeriPride takes the employees
measurements to ensure a good uniform
fit. The company now also carries fire-retardant clothing and other protective gear
specifically for the oil and gas industries.
Really our biggest value proposition
for the oil and gas companies is the flame-
resistant apparel. Its really designed for

intermittent exposure to flame or heat, Saukko says. What we do is provide
businesses with the latest fabric innovations pants, shirts, coveralls, whatever
it might be that meet their compliance rules for their industry. We launder theseitems to the specifications, we know how to wash and maintain these garments
so they maintain their flame-resistant properties through the garments life.
Saukko notes that washing flame-resistant garments in a regular washer
with regular soap can damage the flame-resistant quality and put the wearer of
those clothes in danger.
We know how to maintain that and know when
its time to replace them, Saukko says.
NEW VENTURES
Workers have been able to drop off their soileduniforms at AmeriPride service centers in Minot
and Dickinson for 30-plus years. In the last year, the
company built two new service centers in both those
locations to meet increased demand.
We needed to expand because of the Bakken,
Saukko says.
AmeriPride also recently moved into the retail
market, opening a safety apparel store in Williston in
November 2013.Its our first retail store where workers in that area
can go right in and buy something on site, Saukko
says. Its just another channel for us to support that
industry and it supports the work were doing in
our Bismarck production facility, serving those local
customers there.
Saukko says the retail store mainly specializes in
flame-resistant clothing and high-visibility apparel.
Clothing lines available at the store include Bulwark,
Wrangler, Red Kap and Dickies.
FAMILY BUSINESS
Brothers George and Frank Steiner founded
AmeriPride in 1889 in Lincoln, Neb. They delivered
linens using a handcart through the streets.
Eventually the business grew, they upgraded to
a horse-and-buggy and eventually separated into two
different cities, Saukko says. One went to Salt Lake
City and the other to Minneapolis to open two newbranches of their company.
AmeriPride expanded into Vancouver, British
Columbia, in 1925.
We are still owned and managed by the founding
family, Saukko says. We have a couple fourth-
generation guys who work here in the business. They
have five family members on the board of directors,
two are in management positions here in Minnesota
and we also had a fifth-generation Steiner family
member intern here this year.AmeriPride has 45 production facilities 29 in
the U.S. and 16 in Canada and 70 service centers
where the trucks come in to load and unload uniforms
and other laundry.
The company rents, leases and sells uniforms. If a client rents the uniforms,
AmeriPride provides the delivery, pickup and laundering of those items; if they
lease or buy the uniforms, they are responsible for cleaning them.We think of ourselves as a service company or rental company rather than
just a laundry, Saukko says.
AmeriPride has about 5,600 total employees and services 150,000
customers per week. The Bismarck location has about 140 employees. GOMC

ith several experts predicting
the current oil and gas boom
to last at least another 40 years,
the concern has become finding qualified
individuals to replace those who are near
retirement age and finding employees who
want to stick around a while.
One Ohio school district is trying tohelp its students and others in the state
get a jump-start on learning more about the
oil and gas industry.
The superintendent of Southern
Local Schools, John Wilson, was looking
for a way to get his students ready to enter
the gas and oil industry, says Dr. Chuck
Kokiko of the Jefferson County Education
Service Center. He, as the developer,
approached us about nine or 10 months agowith the idea of creating a school that would
specialize in oil and gas related fields.
In Ohio there are 50 education service
centers that were created to support local
school districts helping them with a
number of things such as professional
staff development and writing online
curriculum.
Kokiko says the process of opening
the community school is well underway. The application has been turned in to the
Ohio Department of Education, a location
has been selected and student recruitment
efforts have begun.
Well lease a classroom from
Southern Local High School where this
school will be provided. Itll be a separate
school though, so you will graduate from
Utica Shale Academy, Kokiko says.
They have their own school board like a
traditional school would have.
According to the Ohio Departmentof Education, in order for the Utica Shale
Academy to be recognized as a school, it
needs to have at least 25 students the
goal the first year is 30 to 50 students,
Kokiko says.
The school would be open to any
ninth- through 12th-grader in the State of
Ohio. Utica Shale Academy will still have
to meet the Ohio graduation requirements,
so the core courses like math, Englishand science will be offered digitally to the
kids, from remedial courses all the way to
advanced placement courses.
The oil and gas portion specifically,
were working with the group PetroEd out
of Houston, Kokiko says. Well also be
purchasing course work for the students in
order for them to get some certifications in
the area.
RigPass and Introduction to WellControl certificates will be offered the
first year.
RigPass is the general well safety,
terminology stuff that most companies
require even before you can step onto a well
pad, Kokiko says. Well have something
for everyone in year one. If youre coming
in as a senior, well have to make sure thegraduation requirements are set first and
then look at the career goals and get them as
much time as we can. If we have a freshman,
obviously well have more time with them.
Southern Local parent Tracy Amato is
pleased that this will be offered to students
in the district, including her own son, who
is showing interest in attending the school.
I see this as a great benefit for a lot of kids,
Amato says.
HANDS-ON EXPERIENCE
Kokiko says students will get plenty
of hands-on experience with the help of
several statewide groups.
Weve had the Society of Petroleum
Engineers reach out to us. Theyre
willing to provide us some curriculum
as well as guidance, Kokiko says. Wehave articulation agreements with two
community schools for the next year with
Eastern Gateway Community College
and Stark State. Stark State actually has a
petroleum program that they started and
have a well site on campus the separators,
valves and everything there.
The Ohio Oil and Gas Energy
Education Program (OOGEEP) is also
working with the Utica Shale Academyand will be training the new community
schools staff over the summer months.
The goal of OOGEEP, according to
Executive Director Rhonda Reda, is to make
sure the students are trained properly and
are thinking about their careers early.
If we have a well-trained workforce,
we will not have injuries out there. If we
have a well-trained workforce, we also wonthave environmental incidents, says Reda.
But it comes down to the quality of the
program and the quality of the worker we
can hire.
The industry-funded OOGEEP is a
nonprofit statewide education and public
outreach program. It was created in
1998 and provides a variety of programs
throughout Ohio, including teacher
workshops, scholarships, science fairs, firefighter training, careers and workforce
development, research, information for
landowners, and guest speaker programs.
Reda says as the industry began to

boom one thing became clear to her: Better training was needed for those
entering the workforce.
What we started seeing is and I dont really like this term, but its the
best term I can come up with some two-men-in-a-truck training, Reda says.I was very adamant when I first started talking with a number of technical and
community colleges that we wil l not promote those types of programs that are
a really quick course. They take peoples money and werent providing them
with qualified training.
Charlie Dixon, the safety and workforce administrator for OOGEEP, says
the collaboration between his group and area schools
is important.
Were starting to see the fruits of our labor here
with some schools that are coming together great,
such as the Utica Shale Academy, and were excited tosee them flourish, Dixon says. Everyone is working
toward good recruitment and retention. People want
to hire, but they want to hire them to hopefully keep
them in the long term.
THINKING EARLY
Kokiko knows the oil and gas industry is a big
draw right now, especially in his area of Ohio, where
there were thousands of steel mill jobs years ago. This is a big blue-collar town, Kokiko says.
Youre lucky to find 1,000 people working in those
steel mills now, so people around here are looking for
opportunities. Theyre hard-working folks who want
to have a decent paying job. Its new life for the area.
Reda enjoys the fact that high schools and even
middle schools now are getting kids thinking about
careers at an earlier age and says its important for
groups like hers to interact with kids at that age.
You see kids engaged at such an early level, andyou want to support that with the science fairs and
things like that, Reda says. You want to be out there
when they are talk ing about different careers because
oftentimes kids will follow a path that maybe their
parents did, or their aunts or uncles or maybe a close
family friend, but theyre often not exposed to all the
different careers.
With the limited opportunities for elective
courses in a regular high school, Reda says communityschools are a good way for students to learn more
about specific careers.
It just starts them on a career path early and not
just the oil and gas, but of course we love the oil and
gas side, Reda says. It al lows them that opportunity
in many, many industries.
Kokiko notes that upon graduating from
Utica Shale Academy, students will be able to take
certification tests for the industry and can earn college
credits if they choose to move on to that level.
UP NEXT
The marketing of the school is now in full swing
as they try to recruit more students. As of early June,
Kokiko had received four student applications.
We have a number of phone calls that have come in and the Southern
Local School District has some students who are interested, Kokiko says.
The marketing plan includes TV spots on local news stations, newspaperarticles and radio spots.
Well be hitting some county fairs to hand out some literature about the
Utica Shale Academy and we have a presence on social media, Kokiko says.
Were pretty excited to see where this takes us. GOMC
