A U G U S T VFW
Dear Comrades
To those of you who missed the European dinner/dance the food was delicious
and plentiful and the entire evening a great success. I would like to thank those
who donated food and all that helped with this dinner, especially our “cooks” Bob
and Kathy Popp. Well done!
Now on a sour note, we are having difficulty in coming up with new ideas to at-
tract larger attendances at our functions. This July 20, 2013 we have a Brisket of
Beef Dinner/dance for a reasonable charge of $15.00 per person, however if we do
not get at least 100 people attending we will have to make this our last dinner as
it is not practical to buy, cook, serve and clean and provide entertainment for a
small group. Remember this is your VFW but if we are unable to find functions
that will make you want to attend, we will reluctantly use our facility just for
monthly meetings, rentals and as a museum. Don’t let this happen, if YOU have
any ideas or suggestions please let us know, meanwhile come to the Brisket din-
ner and bring someone with you, they need not be a veteran or member.
The Booster dinner/dance will be coming up soon so check your membership to
make sure it is up to date otherwise you will not be admitted. Dues are due by
July 15, 2013.
Please be aware that the September 12 meeting has been moved to September 19,
2013
In closing, keep our troops in your prayers till they are all home with their loved
ones. GOD BLESS AMERICA

6 BROTHERS FOUGHT IN WORLD WAR II
Imagine what it would be like keeping up with six sons, all serving in the military at the same time in
WWII. It happened to Florence Emutral Garrison. For two years, from 1944 to 1946 Emutral kept
up a steady correspondence with her six boys, William, James, Rogers, David, Fred, and Charles, send-
ing news from home and, most importantly, transmitting news from one son to all the others. And
Emutral was rewarded; her six sons spent time in harm’s way, but all six came home not to much the
worse for wear. All the brothers were born in Pee Dee and grew up in Florence, S.C. Their father, Ir-
win Garrison, ran Mount Hope Cemetery until 1928 when his son, Roger. Took over. Roger was the
last brother to go into the service in 1944. All the Garrison men served in either the Navy, Army or
Marines. The brothers, and the family in general, will be honored at Florence’s Veterans Park later
this year. On Veteran’s Day in November, family members will add the brothers names to the almost
600 names already on the memorial wall at the park. They’ll be honored with 30 other new names
added to the Wall of Honor
