Oh what fun it is to play duets at ALSI. For me it was a fantastic meeting at ALSI. I re-ally enjoyed playing Fiddler On the Roof songs with the superb accordionist, Linda Hibbert. HAPPINESS at ALSI

by Sharon Marotte

July 14, 2013 – ALSI had another great meeting. As always some of our players entertained folks around the village: Marty Weinstein – Crider, Jerry Odling – Cafeteria, Sharon Marotte – Brandel. Bill Barr was the MC for the day & Jack Marotte was working the sound board. Al Jacobsplayed the piano as folks were arriving – it is nice to have music to welcome us.

The day’s performers were: Margarita Romero was our first

player. Her songs were: Echoes of Vienna and La Strella. Thank you, Margarita, for playing for us…..come back again.

Farrie Ann Nichols was our sec-ond player of the day. She played and sang a couple of songs: New York, New York – Sophmore polka – and Wayward Wind. Good to see Farrie Ann - her doggie is so cute, all dressed up for ALSI.

Ron Griffin was in town so he played for us: Spanish Eyes, On Wis-consin Polka, Gay Ranchero, & Sabor a Mi. Always good to see Ron at our meetings.

Gordon Kohl & Linda Hibbertplayed a duet, both playing their Concerto accordions, with all the

bells & whistles going. They played songs from Fiddler on the Roof. It was really good.

Linda Hibbert played a solo – Fu-niculi, Funicula. Great job, Linda!!

Gordon Kohl played an original song that he has arranged & com-posed. It was beautiful and we hope to hear more of his music.

The ALSI Ensemble assembled and played 5 songs…Summer Medley, Pennsylvania Polka, Italian Favorites, De Colores, Beer Barrel Polka. The following folks played and received a great big round of applause: Gor-don Kohl, Bob Page, Kjell Holmes, Jerry Odling, Ted Hill, Marian Sowell, Jane Ford, Erika Baier & Sharon Marotte.

Special thanks to Diane Polinski for bringing a cake for refreshments. Next month we will help Al Jacobs celebrate his 89th birthday!!! WOW! —

SHOWCASE REVIEW

AL JACOBS SHOWCASEJULY 14, 2013

by Bob Warner

It’s a perennial delight to have Al Jacobs do a showcase for ALSI. Ever the entertainer, Al took us on a musical journey throughout the Mediterranean that required him to draw hugely on his vast reper-toire. Normally Al would stand while performing but due to the length of his program he chose to use a suitcase from which to de-liver his music with vigor, enthusiasm and joy. Al plays with great confi-dence, rarely looking at the keyboard and playing from memory exclusively. He never gets nervous and he will stand or sit and play for as long as requested. Name a song and you can just about bet that Al will have it. He plays just about every genre of mu-sic there is and can recite interesting anec-dotes about the origins of the pieces and his experiences playing them in various parts of the world. Al began his life long association with the accordion in England and now at the tender age of 89 he continues that associa-tion at an extremely entertaining and compe-tent level.

In honor of his granddaughter Laura he be-gan his program with “LAURA’S THEME” from the movie DR. ZIVAGO. His Mediterranean journey started with departure from Barcelona to “GRANADA”, one of the grandest pieces ever transcribed for accordion. France was

the next music stop with Al playing what I be-lieve was a part of the “ORPHEUS IN HADES” overture by J. Offenbach. The infectious bounce of “NEVER ON SUNDAY” from Greece was next. “HAVA NAGILA” was played with great affection and energy along with audience participation. For the music of Lebanon he presented a tantalizing arrange-ment of “MISIRLOU”. For Turkey we heard “MUSTAFA” again played in a ‘belly dancing”

style. The stop in Italy be-gan with “ARRIVEDERCI ROMA”, and continued with a spirited tarantella. The “BLUE DANUBE “ of Straus and Vienna was next which then led on to Germany playing a popular Octoberfest drinking song. For Hungary Al played the difficult “MONTI’S CZAR-DAS” in good style and tempo. For Romania he played a peasant piece re-lated to the “ROMANIAN RHAPSODY” symphony. The tour ended in Russia

with the much loved “DARK EYES”.

From then on Al took audience requests such as “SABOR A ME”, “BRAZIL”, a familiar tango, “LA VIEN ROSE”, “CEST SI BON”, “UNDER PARIS SKIES”, “DON’T CRY FOR ME ARGENTINA” and finally a salute to New York using various pieces suggestive of that city. This is where Al is really in his element. His program was played with style and good technique. It’s clear that Al loves the instru-ment he has devoted so much of his life to. I take nothing away for his age. Al is a young 89 and I hope he continues to play the way he did today for a long time to come. —

Carmen Carrozza passed away this last June 17 at the age of 91. He was born in a small town Solano in Calabria, Italy on July 20, 1921. He emigrated to the USA with his family

when he was nine years old. They settled in the town of Chappaqua in Westchester, New York.

In 1937, he graduated from the Pietro Deiro Ac-cordion Conserva-tory in Greenwich Village where he was awarded the highest honors and a gold medal for his performance. His professional debut

took place in 1947 at the Philadelphia Academy of Music. He went on to triumph with appear-ances throughout the concert halls in the Unit-ed States. His success on the concert stage was matched only by his contribution to the devel-opment of accordion literature.

On March 17, 2002 Maestro Carrozza was honored by the American Accordionists Associ-ation and was the first recipient presented with the prestigious Lifetime Achievement Award. Shortly after this award the Carmen Carrozza Scholarship Fund was established in the Spring of 2002 to promote the advancement of prom-ising young accordionists and the commission-ing of new works for the accordion.

He was past president and an active govern-ing board member of the American Accordion Association (AAA). He continued to promote the accordion through educational workshops at education institutions throughout the coun-try. He will be greatly missed by family, friends and the entire accordion community. —

I had a family commitment on the same day as the July meeting and I missed all of you so much. But, I heard wonderful things about the meeting. It was told to me that Jane Ford and Helen Estok Schoell did a fine job signing people in and collecting the dues for the day. Jane and Hel-en, thank you for your awesome support.

Support was also given by Sharon Marotte when she brought all the supplies for break time and she even did the set up. Sharon made the coffee too and the coffee went perfectly with the wonderful cake that Diane Polinski donated to ALSI. Our ever faithful soundman, Jack Marotte, was on hand to make sure all our fantastic players could be heard.

Bill Barr did it again. He orchestrated the performers into a perfect July performance for all to enjoy.

I wanted to thank Hildegard and Juergen for sending us a postcard all the way from Germany. They sent their lovely regards to all of you and said to say hello. They will be returning to the US in August and they hope to see everyone soon.

I hope to see you all in August. Until then keep safe and happy. —

Mary Lou

Happy Birthday to you all!
