6 Surprising Wellness Tips to Live Healthier and Happier By Cleveland Clinic Wellness Editors

#1 Think you deserve a treat? Not so fastBasking in the glory of an achievement? Steer clear of your favorite treats. Pride in accomplishments can make us indulge unhealthful. There’s nothing wrong with treating yourself to something special after an accomplishment. But instead of choosing cookies or cake, celebrate with a manicure, a movie or an hour at the driving range with family or friends.

#2 Kicking the habit can make you feel gleeful, not glumThink smoking helps you feel better? New research shows people are happier when they quit smoking. To improve your mood, kick the habit. If you’re a smoker, you probably smoke more when you’re unhappy or stressed. Because negative moods can intensify cravings, a smoking cessation program that incorporates stress management techniques may boost your efforts to quit. Ask your doctor about programs in your community.

#3 That loud snoring? It could be your heart telling you somethingLoud snoring may be linked to metabolic syndrome, a precursor to heart disease. Common sleep problems, like difficulty falling asleep and frequent loud snoring may be signs of future health conditions. Being overweight, smoking, drinking, and using muscle relaxers or other drugs could be to blame. If losing weight, quitting smoking and cutting back on alcohol don’t help, talk to your doctor, who may refer you to a sleep specialist.

#4 Stay in bed to look more beautifulHow to look more attractive: Spend more time in bed. A new study shows people are rated better-looking when they are getting enough sleep. This is cute but doesn’t seem all that surprising. Turns out, there really is such a thing as beauty rest. To look your most attractive, the best thing you can do is get a good night’s sleep. Set aside plenty of time each night for rest.

#5 Talk to your college-aged daughter about HPV – she’s likely to listen to you! College-aged women are more likely to get the HPV vaccine if Mom suggests it. The HPV vaccine is approved for females and males ages 9-26 years, and is recommended to be taken in early puberty. In addition to getting the HPV vaccine, one of the most important things women can do to reduce their risk of cervical cancer is to get regular screenings. Make sure you and your daughter visit your ob/gyn regularly.

#6 Pay with cash at the grocery store and you’ll be more likely to resist the junk food Can’t keep junk food out of your house? A new study shows you’re less likely to splurge on treats when you buy your groceries with cash. We tend to make fewer impulse purchases

when we pay in cash. At the supermarket, those with the most spender’s guilt tend to splurge the least. Try it out the next time you go grocery shopping.

Preserving Our Past! The folks with Good Times of Olean worked with David Hornburg and Olean, Portville, Allegany historical societies for old photos that could be reproduced for their facility. All 3 combed their archives for pictures and brought them to the Ink Well where Bryan George of Good Times selected the pictures. The Ink Well scanned, edited, fixed and printed the photos, including information on them where they could. Then framed them all for Good Times. David Hornburg purchased and donated the large print of the aerial view of Olean that hangs by the service desk.

If people want a re-print of a photo, they can contact the Ink Well and they’ll print it for them with proceeds going to the Historical Society that provided the photo.2

The American Red Cross Encourages You to Be aHero Again this September 11th

In the hours and days following the horrific attacks of September 11, 2001, thousands of Americans lined up to donate blood, hoping to help victims and to prepare our nation for the turbulent times that remained ahead. The outpouring of compassion and patriotism across America still stands strong in all of our minds. The unprecedented response by citizens to help our American community was inspirational. The American Red Cross hopes to draw on that spirit as the twelfth anniversary of the tragedy nears. As we once again prepare to remember those lost with a National Day of Service and Remembrance, the Red Cross encourages people to roll up a sleeve to give the gift of life in honor of the victims of that tragic day. The Police and Fire Departments of Olean and the American Red Cross are joining together for the Memorial Blood Drive on Wednesday, September 11, from 10 AM to 6 PM at the Olean Knights of Columbus at 129 Hamilton Street. All presenting donors will receive a free t-shirt. Additionally, each presenting donor will have the opportunity to enter into a grand prize drawing for a pair of round-trip JetBlue airline tickets. Local Army Recruiters will be on site with activities. All attendees will also have the opportunity to see the birds and hawks of the Birds of Prey bird rescue organization. WPIG-FM will be broadcasting live and refreshments will be available throughout the day. There will be free parking available in the public parking lot on North Barry Street courtesy of the City of Olean. “The Red Cross has received tremendous support at our September 11 Memorial Blood Drives” says Melissa Riehle, Account Manager, American Red Cross Blood Services, New York-Penn Region. “I am proud to live in such a great community. The Southern Tier community has demonstrated over the past eleven years that they are a community of people that truly take action when asked to pull together to honor the heroes of September 11th. Hopefully everyone will come together again this year and help us pay tribute to the men and women who lost their lives that tragic day and help save the lives of hospital patients in need.”

It is the blood on the shelves today that helps save lives tomorrow. That is why your donation through the American Red Cross is so important. Now is the perfect time to show your support and give back to the Olean community, as Red Cross is the primary supplier of blood products and services to Olean General Hospital. Donors are encouraged to schedule an appointment in advance by calling 1-800-RED CROSS (1-800-733-2767) or by visiting redcrossblood.org.

generosity,” said Karen Niemic Buchheit, CRCF Executive Director.

Past recipients of the Friends of the Foundation award include: Betty Pappas, Russell Hurlburt, John “Jack” and Louise Murphy, Carroll and Dolores Anstaett, Mildred “Millie” Milliman, and Steve and Donna Teuscher and Jonathan Teuscher Scholarship Committee members.

The board also recognized the 28 recipients of awards from its scholarship funds. This year’s award commitments total $88,000.

“Many of the scholarship recipients, including myself, have given of ourselves and our time through community service, so we understand simply that ‘giving feels good.’ But I believe in the case of scholarships especially, there’s even greater cause for happiness in giving,” said

James Andrew Scanlan, John J. Murphy Family Scholarship recipient from Bradford Area High School, in his remarks on behalf of the scholarship students.

Being rewarded for achievement and character; going to college; being given the opportunity to learn, serve, and explore; going out then and contributing, and giving back, and knowing we’re making an impact – that’s happiness. And realizing you [donors] helped make all of that possible – that’s happiness, too,” he added.

Mr. Scanlan plans to attend Brown University and major in mechanical engineering.

Donors who established new funds at the Foundation were recognized as well. “Our Foundation ion is built on the funds that donors create,” noted Carol Stitt, board president. For more information, contact the Foundation at (716) 372-4433, email [email protected] or visit www.cattfoundation.org. 5

More than 150 people gathered to honor community philanthropists, as well as to congratulate the Foundation’s 2013 scholarship students at the Cattaraugus Region Community Foundation’s sixth annual Friends of the Foundation Luncheon.

The Foundation board honored Erick and Marianne Laine and Peter Laine as 2013 Friends of the Foundation for their generosity, service and dedication to philanthropy in the Greater Olean community.

Board member Ward “Skip” Wilday presented the awards on behalf of the Foundation. “What they have done demonstrates what a difference one family can make in a community,” Mr. Wilday said of Erick, Marianne and Peter’s volunteerism and support of nonprofits. Erick Laine, former president of CUTCO Corporation and current chairman emeritus, and his wife, Marianne Letro Laine, have long been affiliated with improvements for local higher education. Together they were instrumental in the development of the Regina A. Quick Center for the Arts at St. Bonaventure University. Marianne, a native of Olean and former teacher, serves as chair of the Guild for the Quick Center. Erick’s son, Peter, former Executive Vice President of CUTCO, was involved with local nonprofits as well, having chaired the JCC Foundation investment committee and co-chaired several United Way of Cattaraugus County Campaigns. He now serves as board treasurer for the Western Carolina Alzheimer’s Association chapter and volunteers as a pilot for Angel Flight Mid-Atlantic. “Erick, Marianne and Peter join a distinguished group of community philanthropists who have made our region a better place by their active involvement and
