President’s Message We are fast approaching the end of the summer rush of moves and should soon see the influx of those claims. Are we ready? Now is the time to ask that question and if necessary, to put in place those pro-cedures that will help us service these claims with the proper profes-sionalism, empathy, and timeliness.

In the July Newsletter I wrote about customer service and how it impacts not just your business, but that of your clients. Speaking of “customer service,” I wanted to share with you that there is a ses-sion on this very subject scheduled towards the end of this year’s Fall Convention that should prove to be educational and fun for all! For information regarding this session and the Convention itself, please see the schedule at the back of this issue.

While I know that these are challenging economic times, I encourage you to find a way to attend the Convention. When you have a few minutes, review the follow-up comments shared by many that attend-ed the Spring Workshop…the renewed energy in attending these get-togethers is powerful. An opportunity is provided for you to discover new information about our industries; to refresh your memory on things forgotten; to meet new and potential customers; and to recon-nect with the existing ones. The support you receive at these events is therapeutic at the very least.

I also invite all members to share with me any ideas you have for improving and growing our organization. This truly is your organiza-tion and the more involved you are, the greater your opportunity will be to add to your knowledge, experience, and customer base.

I look forward to seeing all of you in Nashville, October 4th – 6th.

Repair firms PAY ATTENTION:KEEP THE GOLD MINE OPEN!!!By: Mark & Kent Weathersby

No matter how interesting, informative, or relevant, the content of most panels and lectures in time fade into the repository of forgetfulness. However, en-counters that allow us to take away a new skill or abil-ity leave a permanent impression. The fabric of many family ties is interwoven with closely guarded and prized skills. I never pick up a burn-in knife without feeling my dad’s hand on mine as he taught me his craft.

The past several conferences have included demon-strations by some of the finest craftsmen in the world. Many included techniques and materials handed down and perfected across several generations. Many of us have spent the better part of a career trying to perfect the art of French polishing and were still seeking the elusive streak-free patina. At the most recent confer-ence, Bill Balsiger cleared that up in minutes; granted he is a raging shellacoholic. Drew Kistner, despite his boyish good looks and obvious youthfulness, totally demystified the chemistry of spot cleaning while Bill Schoenbauer singlehandedly deprived scores of third party floor refinishers of projects we can now accom-plish ourselves at a fraction of the cost. Kathy Acker-man demonstrated that caning can be so easy, “even a girl can do it!” So many skills, tricks, and family secrets have been shared by so many. The hands-on workshops are accomplishing their intended goal: raise the income of repair firms. Repair firms come to learn skills that can’t be found anywhere else in the country. Where else can one go to learn about fine arts

restoration, fine textile cleaning, leather repair, finish touch-up hardwood floor repairs, caning, mold mak-ing, polyester repair and water-base polyacrylic fin-ish? Throw in French polishing, gold leafing, paper stain bleaching, blind stitching, and whatever else I have forgotten about. These are only a few examples of the value that has been added to our pursuit of ex-cellence and our dedication to the CPPC mandate to control claims costs within our industry. Our compli-ments to every participant that has unselfishly shared his or her skills with fellow craftsmen and van line professionals.

My brother and I started our training in the ‘60s; we were both in our early teens. I remember my first per-fect burn-in, level without any knife marks…what a feeling. Today, I still get excited by new techniques, Abralon pad technology, Blendal sticks for large fin-ish touch-ups, water-based glazing and finishing, and new mold materials. How fortunate we are to have a profession that rewards us with positive feedback ev-ery day. Let us hear from you if you would like to see these demonstrations and hands-on opportunities at future workshops and conventions. These opportuni-ties are a gold mine; one just has to dig it out. v

Now that sentence could bring a lot of different things to your mind. But the “Whom you Know”, that I am referring to is the CPPC membership. I am still amazed by some of the calls or emails that I receive at the office and situations that our members are ask-ing for assistance with. Please don’t get me wrong, I am very happy to get the calls and also very happy to assist them in anyway that I can. But the fact that many of our members do not realize the shear volume of knowledge that is amongst our membership con-tinues to amaze me. I remain that together, there is little that we as a membership can not accomplish. But also, who you know can often be of great importance in getting some information at larger organizations. If you have established a working relationship and met key individuals in person, it can open doors that might otherwise not be open. That is a key element of networking 101.

Our repair members show through their repair demon-strations the knowledge and skill they have obtained and are willing to share. We also see at our various Workshops and Conventions that there are few top-ics that together can not be resolved by the sharing and discussion of topics. Al Thompson with LITCO is moderating a panel at the upcoming Convention to try and identify and find possible prevention op-tions for repetitive claims. He is seeking input from many of our membership leaders. If you have ideas or suggestions, I know Al would welcome them. We find a view of our members sharing on a monthly ba-sis through their continuing articles in the Newsletter, such as “Ask The Computer Guy” by Guy Endsley and “The Other Side of the Desk by Dan Manning. And I commend Gene Shontere and Jana Daily for their lat-est in Point-Counter-Point for trying to discuss day to day issues in our business. I guess we even have to give the infamous Mrs. Sweet and Mr. Cynical credit for giving us a little slighted version to many various topics posed by our membership. What a very small element of our business and an even smaller percent-

age of our membership. But together, the amount of information that could be shared is endless. Unfortu-nately that takes involvement from even more of our membership. So here I am asking for more of you to step up and share of yourself so that more can learn and together we can continue to grow. That sharing does not have to be in the form or an article. There are many other ways to initiate that sharing. It could come in the form of a question to the CPPC Question Box. It could come in the form of you contributing a Member Interview that lets other members know about you, your skills and your services. It could be as simple as putting a topic on the table that the CPPC of-fice can pass along to yet another member to address. We all have ideas, questions, concerns and potential solutions to many elements in our industry. Keeping them to oneself, does no one else any benefit; so speak up and share what is on your mind through one of the many venues we offer.

I recently spoke to “The Computer Guy” about “Fa-cebook” and “LinkedIn”, both popular internet com-munity associations; one more personal, the other more professional. They both claim to be a great way to meet others of like interest and to share informa-tion or “Networking”. Personally, I have not jumped on that band wagon, yet; as I am not sure it fits my needs. But I am continuing to believe I am the only one left that hasn’t joined. Hopefully the Computer Guy will share some further insight on these elements in the future. Sometimes it is a matter of us just not understanding that new gadget, so we avoid it for the wrong reasons. Thank you to those that have shared of themselves and continue to do so. Hopefully others will find that they have much to share and will do so in the near future as well. Together as a membership, we can make a difference, by both “What We Know” and “Who We Know”. And you never know when “Who You Know” just might open an otherwise closed door, so that they can find out “What You Know”. The time is now to get involved and invested. v

Sweet and CynicalSweet and Cynical’s column is here to answer your ques-tions. Mr. Cynical and Mrs. Sweet thank those that have taken the time to send in questions in the past and welcome new ones. If you have a question for Sweet and Cynical, please email them to the CPPC office at [email protected]. Simply place “Sweet and Cynical” in the Subject Line and the office will route it direct to us for review and re-sponse. Sources of all questions are kept confidential, so you do not have to worry.

Dear Sweet and Cynical,

I've been patiently waiting for the economy to get better but I don't see it. Can you look into your crystal ball and tell me what you see? Do you see a recovery or any Obama dollars coming our way?

Wishful Thinking in Dire Straits Dear Wishful Thinking,

You really are on your last dollar if you think either Mr. Cynical or I have the all knowing word on this matter or the true direction of the bailout funds. All of us do have to realize that things started getting bad long before they actually hit most of us personally. It is that old proverbial trickle down effect. Most of us just kept going along our merry way, with that proud assumption, that it was not going to affect us. Well, guess what. I am confident it has affected all of us, in some way or another; and of course, some, more than others. There are just too many factors in-volved to predict what the true effect was going to be on each of us or to what extent it would hurt. I personally have talked with fellow members that have been lightly affected and some that have been hurt to the point of closing their door. I personally just cry to see that happen to dear people I know. But Mr. Cynical and I both have said many a time that you have to prepare for that rainy day and diversify if at all possible. And many of our members have shared ideas for doing just that either in articles in the Newsletter or at past gatherings. These members have the experience to share and it is incredible to see just how much they do share for the benefit of their fellow members. I am proud to be amongst them. But let’s move along, Mrs. Cynical just doesn't like to whaler in the pity too long. It can have a re-ally bad effect on the overall presentation of one’s self that I try to uphold. Oh girl, you are on it today. Hey the girl has to keep up her appearances at all times. One never knows when the next prospective boyfriend, I mean business op-portunity might come along.

Latest financial predictions I have seen do look promising. News just this last weekend reported that used housing sells were up for the past 3 months counting and that the number of available houses were down. Those are markers they are

watching to predict if we hit the bottom and are rebound-ing. By those figures, we are rebounding. Wish someone would tell my financial institution that. But as the position we are in did not happen overnight, the re-bound will not happen overnight either. Earlier in the year, the prediction was that we would hold our own through most of 2009 and then things should start to truly re-bound. Well it is Au-gust, so that prediction of re-bound is less that 6 months away. We can truly hope that the foreseers are correct. I know my personal nest egg is dwindling, much like a lot of other things of mine; but that is not for print here. Oh girl, that was funny.

In the mean time, keep pushing along, be positive, do a 110% forward thinking and work, continue to diversify to have more options to prosper and keep involved with the CPPC where you can be informed on those things that mat-ter to you and your business. And don't forget the upcom-ing Fall Convention. Yet another opportunity to step up, gain knowledge, meet or re-aquaint with business prospec-tives and focus forward on future opportunities within our industry. I just saw on the CPPC website that the President of AMSA is speaking at the Fall Convention. I cannot think of anyone better to shed proper light on our current and fu-ture industry. Way to go planners of the Fall Convention. I will be there with my usual bells on, waiting to hear what the status of our industry is and where I am in that status block. Hope to see you there.

Sincerely, Mrs. Sweet

Wishful thinking,

Now that Mrs. Sweet is done nurturing you and petting your head bald, I guess I can try to answer your question.

Let's see......oh yes. Crystal Ball. I would be looking into mine had it not been destroyed in my last move. Since I didn't claim it on my high value list, the carrier gave me 15.00 for it!!! As a good gesture, on Mrs. Sweet’s last birth-day; I used the crystal ball money to purchase a broom for Mrs. Sweet, so she always has a ride to the post office to pick up her alimony checks. Which reminds me, don't forget Mrs. Sweet’s birthday is the week before Groundhog Day. Mark it on your calendars. Maybe if we can get Mrs. Sweet to come out of Tiffany's and Bloomingdales long enough to look for the shadow of her last 3 husband’s billfold pockets...we might be able to predict the national recovery.

Anyhow... all seriousness. There are some SBA loans out there every small business should look into to restore their cash flow. Finally part of the Obama Nation recovery proj-ect has finally reached us. But once the money is gone, it is gone. Do not hesitate putting in your application!

They are giving away a max of 35K at zero per cent interest and no payments for one year, and then giving you 5 years

to pay it back at Zero interest. You can't beat it!!! So anyone who has had a successful business before all this started may want to take advantage of this loan. The application process is a pain, but who can't use 35K right now to help pay off higher interest loans?

The Program is called: America's Recovery Capital (ARC) the website is www.sba.gov

Good luck! I went out last night to celebrate the fact they changed trash day from Tues to Mon, and started charg-ing us more for it! Gotta love the city municipalities...they sensed the need, and engaged the greed. Anyhow, get to work before Ms. Sweet starts singing us lullabies...

Mr. Cynical v

Sweet and Cynical July revision:Dear Readers:You may have noticed that Mr. Cynical did not have a response to last month’s question. Well, if Mrs. Sweet could be vain as usual and have her way, she would have advised you that Mr. Cynical was late with his response and he missed the deadline. Of course, we can not allow Mrs. Sweet to be that vain, now can we? Unfortunately it was an oversight during the proofing of the Newsletter. We apologize to our readers that fol-low that column. For your convenience, please see the Mr Cynical’s response to the question. The complete response as it should have appeared can be viewed in the July Newsletter on-line.

Well Sweet and Cynical,I am still a little unsure of the some of the advice that you two have given out. But I must admit, I am a fan of your column. Please keep the zingers coming. We all need that option of humor in these financially stressful times. Speak-ing of which; like many others, I am finding it hard at times to deal with what appears to be some slow payments for the assignments I have been bleassed to have received. I even received an assignment of late from a party that stiffed me for quite a long time in the past. I really hate to turn work away in these times, but how do you determine if the risk is worth it when accepting an assignment these days; es-pecially from a party that has a bad past history. It is very difficult to face getting burned. Is it appropriate to ask for a down payment on a claim if it exceeds a risky amount? Signed, A Little Gun Shy. Gun Shy,

Looking down the barrel of a potentially catastrophic loss of money from a deadbeat carrier can be somewhat tough.

My opinion is much like Mrs. Sweet's, shoot me now!!!

Start out slow with what you don't know, jump fast on the ride that will last!!! Don't say a word Mrs. Sweet about your last Vegas trip. We do NOT want to know. Besides I just ate breakfast, and since its the most important meal of the day.........stop in the name health!!!

Don't cut off your nose to spite your face. There is a flip side to every coin. Carriers don't always like paying for services they have not received. So don't get too cocky with your carefulness. There are companies that as sure as the sun comes up tomorrow after the sunset today, the check will come after the release. These are your closest clients. Don't destroy the trust you have being paranoid over everyone.

Get r' dun repair firms!!!! Get r' paid carriers!!!!

Mrs. Sweet, we are going to have to keep you out of the yellow pages in you have way too much insight on prepay services!!! Cynical v

You can’t just make this stuff up – Part 2I did something 2 weeks ago that I have NEVER done before – I lost my wallet. I went on a job out in Morristown, NJ (approx. 35 miles northwest) then onto another 2 stops. At one of those 3 stops I lost my wal-let. At the first stop the shipper was Russian and when I phoned them back to inquire about leaving my wallet at their residence they, sort of, understood what I was asking. They said they couldn’t find it. The 2nd stop I was just delivering some things. I did go back to their residence, we looked through the house – couldn’t find it. 3rd stop of the day – same scenario.

So, I had to go through the entire process of re-invent-ing my identity. I had to get a new driver license, new credit cards, new everything.

Unfortunately for me, the next day I had an appoint-ment at the West Point Military Academy in New York State, New York. Needless to say, this military facil-ity is very security conscious. You just can’t walk into West Point, you need forms of identification.

I did go to my local police station the day I lost my wal-let to report it lost – wanted to make sure that if it was found the person who found it wouldn’t be able to start using my credit cards (that don’t work anyway) and assume my identity (not that anyone would want to assume MY identity). Having that police report in hand, I figured that would be good enough to secure my admission on base so that I could keep my appoint-ment. with the Army Captain. I made sure my helper had his ID in order and asked him to do the driving onto the base.

When we got to the security gate, in the van, the mili-tary police stopped us and asked to see my helper’s ID (he was driving). The MP walked over to the passenger side of the truck and asked to see my ID. I responded with an apology and the explanation that we had a slight problem - told him that I had lost my wallet yes-terday and just don’t have any form of ID on me. I assured the MP that I was, indeed, Dan Manning – the owner of this business. I also showed the MP the copy of the police report I had filed regarding my wallet loss. I also showed the MP a business card with my name on it and pointed out to him that the side of the trucks reads “Manning Claim Services”. The MP looked at me and said “I’m sorry Sir but all of this doesn’t matter. You can’t get into West Point without the proper iden-tification”. He went on to say “I have to know that you are actually Dan Manning. Is there any way you can prove to me that YOU are Dan Manning”?

I thought and thought for about 30 seconds about how I could actually prove that I am Dan Manning - the things I had and showed the MP were not adequately identifying me to this MP.

A light bulb went off in my head – it dawned on me how I could ID myself.

I told the MP “No problem sir, I can show you right away that my name is Dan”. The MP responded, “Go ahead, show me and you’re in”.

I rolled up my sleeve. Unfortunate for me, when I was 16 years old on one stupid night I got a tattoo with my name on it and it is still on my left arm. I said “See, my name is Dan” and showed the MP my tattoo, I showed him my business card again, I reminded him my name “Manning” was on the side of the truck.

The MP proceeded to start laughing hysterically. He told us in all of his time in security that he has never seen this form of identification in trying to get into West Point. He then called ahead to the Army Captain I had the appointment with and he did verify that he had an appointment. with Dan Manning. The MP let me in and was still laughing as we drove through the gate.

I guess there is a lesson here – I guess, either, don’t loose your wallet OR make sure your name is tattooed onto your arm.

Until next month, Dan v

Widgets The choice product for every marketing and manu-facturing class is the illusive widget. Much like the monster in the lake and the hairy fella in the woods, no one really knew what it really was. Finally, geeks everywhere have come to the rescue and gave the widget a home.

So what is it? A widget is an applet (small applica-tion) that lives on your desktop. They generally don’t take up too much room or memory to affect your computer’s performance. These little wonders can do just about anything you can imagine and many things you can not. Widgets include RSS readers, games, tuners for listening to Sirius radio (subscrip-tion needed for Sirius), and weather.

Why a need? The internet is full of these little pro-grams; however there is never a guarantee the ones you use will play nice with one another or safe for your computer. In comes Yahoo, they have the Yahoo Widget Engine (formerly Kongabulator). Yahoo has thousands of widgets available so you’re sure to find something you can use. Among the most popular is the Sticky Deluxe giving you stickies for your desk-top, Informer which monitors your computer’s sys-tems, Lost the TV show, and for those who just have to blow off steam is Shootit. Shootit is a fun widget that allows you to shoot holes in your desktop. Pick your ammo and let ‘r rip!

Alright, some of those may not seem to have much productive value, but there are just too many to list. You may watch the weather, market, or loved ones all in a little window on your desktop. Before you in-stall the program, go to yahoo.com and search yahoo widgets. Search some to see if there is anything you just can’t live without.

Thank each of you once again for your feedback and support. Please contact me with any questions or suggestions at [email protected].

2009 CPPC Fall ConventionDoubletree Hotel – Nashville Downtown

October 4th - 6th, 2009

InformationLOCATIONDoubletree Hotel – Nashville Downtown is the sight for the 2009 CPPC Convention. The hotel is only 10 minutes from the airport and is within walking dis-tance of many attractions downtown, including “The District”, which houses many Honky Tonks, BB Kings, The Wildhorse Saloon and the Country Music Hall of Fame. All events of the Convention will take place in the hotel itself, with the exception of an optional Mon-day Night Outing or the Sunday Golf Scramble. It is a recently remodeled property with all the latest ameni-ties. The Hotel does have dining on the property and a Starbucks in their lobby for added convenience.

HIGHLIGHTSOur goal continues with this event to provide edu-cational opportunities to all our members, while still allowing them sufficient time to network amongst themselves. We will continue again with this event having a strong focus on the military sector of our in-dustry. Recent and continuing changes make it a vi-able factor for us to follow. This time we will split the membership during this section of the session to allow for more specialized topic agenda within this subject matter. We have re-dedicated our focus on any New Members in attendance to make sure they feel wel-come and have guidance in meeting other members and understanding the value our organization can provide them. And as always, there will be plenty of time to ask questions throughout the event either in an open session or one-on-one to our Board or other members. This event does start off with an opening reception on Sunday night. We have included an op-tional Monday night outing again this year as they have proved very popular in the past.

Non-Registered Guests can attend the Sunday Night Welcome Reception for a small additional charge with-out actually attending the meetings. This information is available on the registration form.

REGISTRATIONLook for the “Registration Form” in the back of this

Newsletter or on-line at our web site, www.claimsnet.org . A new feature for this event is the ability to “Register” on-line as well. You can find the link on the CPPC website for this added feature. Remember to register early, as the date your registration is received, can affect the amount you pay. Your registration fee does include the welcome reception on Sunday night, continental breakfast and full lunch on Monday and a buffet breakfast on Tuesday.

If you need sleeping accommodations for the event, they can be made direct with the hotel at 615-244-8200. Their address is 315 4th Ave N., Nashville, TN 37219. Don’t forget to identify yourself as part of the CPPC 2009 Convention, using reservation code “CPP”, to obtain the special room rate of $124.00. You can also make reservations on-line at http://doubletree.hil-ton.com/en/dt/groups/personalized/BNADUDT-CPP-20091002/index.jhtml Please note that the CPPC room block expires Sept. 11th, 2009. There are a lim-ited number of rooms within this block, so register early to ensure a room at this rate. Note: This special rate can not be guaranteed after this date or once the room block has been met.

DONORS/SPONSORSHIPSDonors/Sponsorships help us to insure the success of this event by allowing us to keep rates low, so more people can attend. With any level of Donor/Sponsor-ship you can gain valuable exposure through your name being listed in the monthly newsletters and on the CPPC website, prior to the event, and on various listings throughout the Convention itself. Contribu-tions of $50 - $250 are directly tied to designated lev-els this time, but any and all contributions will be ap-preciated and acknowledged. Check the registration form for further details.

TRANSPORTATIONAll major air carriers serve Nashville. Make your res-ervations early to get your best fares. Transportation from the airport to the property is not provided by the hotel; but again, the Hotel is only a short 10 minute ride away.

The Monday Night Outing during the 2009 Convention is an optional event for those in attendance at the CPPC Fall Convention. It is not part of your Registration fee. This year we have chosen Nashville’s infamous “Wildhorse Saloon”. Reservations must be made in advance to be included in the special group rate of $40.00 per

person. This pricing does provide you with entrance into the Wildhorse, designated VIP group seating for the evening’s entertainment and a buffet dinner with non-alcoholic beverages as presented below.

Put your favorite pair of cowboy boots or dancing shoes on and get ready to dance. The “Wildhorse” does offer line dance lessons before the entertainment starts. So brush up on some of those old steps you vaguely remember or learn a few new ones, and join us for what should prove to be fun for all that participate. Note: Last month’s Newsletter reflected a 2

nd option for BB Kings; but schedule conflict

required us to alter our plans. We apologize for the change or any inconvenience.
