Community Day DazzlesEveryone at the borough encour-

ages you to attend Community Day onSaturday, August 16. I am most excitedabout the fireworks show. This year’sZambelli display will be twice as largeas the show in 2007.

Comprehensive Plan Draft Available

The draft joint comprehensive planwill be available for review at the borough building and the C.C. MellorLibrary for at least 45 days (or untilmid-September). The final plan willhave to go to borough council forfinal approval. We welcome your comments.

Street Paving Coming SoonWhile we do not have a start date

yet, the paving project will likely occureither the week before or the weekafter Community Day. We have begunthe process of planning for paving in2009. We will be able to finish the

paving of Edgewood Avenue in 2011.This year’s paving on EdgewoodAvenue will fill in the area betweenElm Street and the Edgewood AvenueBridge. In all likelihood we will beable to pave Edgewood Avenue toGordon Street in 2009. We then will gofrom Gordon to Lloyd in 2010 andfrom Lloyd to Lacrosse in 2011.

Road RepairsThe Public Works Department will

be out for the next month doing roadrepairs. We will be pouring hot asphaltin damaged roadways around the bor-ough. This maintenance does extendthe life of the road and saves our tax-payers money.

Budget TimeI believe you will be seeing munici-

palities in our region having a very dif-ficult time with their 2009 budgets. Iam hearing about several towns thatare looking to begin budget discus-sions very soon, including the elimina-tion of spending decisions that were totake place later in 2008. The Boroughof Edgewood continually analyzes cur-rent year spending and revenues andtheir potential impact on the subse-quent year’s budget.

Hope to see you at Community Day.By Kurt Ferguson

New Superintendent AppointedThe Woodland Hills School Board

approved the appointment of Dr.Walter M. Calinger as the next superin-tendent of the Woodland Hills SchoolDistrict. Calinger, the current superin-tendent of the Richmond HeightsSchool District in Ohio, has beeninvolved in the field of education forover 39 years; many of those yearshave been in administration in rural, urban and suburban school districts.Calinger has a Ph.D in Research,Evaluation and Counseling from OhioState University and also has a lawdegree from the Creighton UniversityLaw School.

One of Calinger’s goals is to makethe schools of the WHSD “the schoolsof choice” for the residents of thetwelve boroughs that comprise the dis-trict. “We need to ensure that eachschool in our district offers every childthat walks through its door an educa-tion of the highest quality,” saidCalinger.

The Richmond Heights SchoolDistrict is a public school district ofabout 1200 students with a racially and

ethnically mixed population. It is locat-ed in the Cleveland, Ohio metropolitanarea and has earned an “effective” rat-ing on its state report card. As thesuperintendent of a diverse studentpopulation, Calinger is known as afierce advocate for children and he haswritten and spoken nationally aboutthe essential role of public educationin our country’s success.

Several goals that were achievedduring Calinger’s tenure at RichmondHeights were dramatic improvementon state tests; closing of achievementgaps; successfully preparing andenrolling more students in college; andthe revival of the district football pro-gram.

In addition to his career as a profes-sional educator, he has also held elect-ed office, serving as the mayor of alarge midwestern city, Omaha,Nebraska. He has also served on citycouncil, and as a member and presi-dent of the Omaha Board ofEducation. His experience as a teacher, principal, superintendent, board mem-ber and president, and being a parentand taxpayer himself, has givenCalinger the opportunity to assess pub-lic education from every vantage point.

Board President Marilyn Messinaremarked on the board’s decision, “It isapparent from Dr. Calinger’s vast andwell-rounded experience and his truecommitment to public education thathe is a good fit for our district. Hecomes to us uniquely prepared to han-dle the challenges that confront manypublic school districts today. Theboard and I look forward to forming apartnership with Dr. Calinger to ensurethat every student in our districtreceives the very best education possi-ble and leaves Woodland Hills pre-pared to succeed in the world.”

Edgewood ChampsIn the swirling dust of Koenig Field,

Edgewood’s Green Monster wrestedvictory from the knights sent to slay it.The Green Monster, comprised of the9-10 year old Little League baseballplayers, won the season championshipby defeating the worthy contendersfrom Swissvale’s Map Room team witha score of 9-8. The three game seriesproved to be as exciting as baseball canbe since both teams scored 16 runs. However, baseball is a game of details, most importantly the consideration ofwhen the runs are scored. Edgewoodsandwiched its two key victoriesaround Map Room’s one: 5-4, 2-4, 9-8.Despite the high tension and volatileemotions, Manager John Bilyak wasstalwart: “I was confident we wouldwin... whenever I wasn’t wavering.”

The path to the championship serieswas Glory Road. The five weeks ofMay found all opponents wanting asthe Green Monster devoured an unde-feated 15-0 season. The half-dozenten-year-old veterans were joined bythe nine year olds from last year’sundefeated seven-eight-year-old team.Perhaps the boys didn’t know how tolose. The list of contenders was signif-icant: Forest Hills’ Grey, Gold, andFEDCO; Chalfont’s Nacho’s CleaningService; Turtle Creek’s VFW and TCFD,Wilkins’ Shop & Save, and Swissvale’sR.S. Gulf and Map Room.

Coaches Jeff Mattson and GeorgePomper joined Manager John Bilyak toreceive both the Regular Season

Trophy and the Championship SeriesTrophy, presented by Woodland HillsLittle League President Joe Esposto, onbehalf of the players, the parents, andthe Edgewood community. All threecoaches expressed their joy of workingwith this group of talented ball players. For Coach Mattson, attitude was key –“These boys have combined attitudeand team with talent and the effects

are evident.”The team’s roster is Matthew Bilyak,

Andrew Derda, Aaron Fischer, ThomasFoglia, Max Fortna, George Freedline,John Freedline, Darius Irani, CalebMattson, Christopher Olander, EricPomper, Josh Pryor, Coleman Richards,Gabe Sunderman, and Paul Watt-Morse.

Saturday, August 16 is Edgewood’sCommunity Day. Kicking off the day’s activi-ties will be the annual 5K Race and Walk. Therace will follow its traditional course throughthe streets of Edgewood. Once again,Edgewood Public Works Department, theVolunteer Fire Department, Police Departmentand Eastern Area EMS will be providing sup-port.

Entry forms have been mailed to past par-ticipants. If you did not receive one and wish to race or walk, please stop by theborough building for the form. Entry forms can also be downloaded on theEdgewood borough web site. Residents who live along the course should bewarned: streets will be closed from approximately 7 a.m. until the last runner pass-es by, usually by 10 a.m., with parade route streets closed until after the 11 a.m.parade. For both routes, it is important to move your car away from the course ifyou need to leave during the event. (See page 7 for more information on streetclosings.)

The Edgewood 5K is in its 24th year and has a reputation as a challengingcourse. The race originators laid the route out to fall entirely within Edgewood, and it features some of its most beautiful (and hilly) streets.

Runners and walkers are encouraged to come and see the borough in a newlight, and possibly a higher temperature, on Community Day.

If you have any questions, please call Rick Gusic at (412) 271-8888 (days) or(412) 657-3944 (evenings).
