cheque and a certain pride in beingamong the company's first hourly-ratedfemales in the current program. Pre-viously a typist, her reasons for joiningInternational Nickel were "change,improvement, money, and benefits".Just like that. She admits to being'really tired and stiff" for the first three

weeks, but definitely plans to hang inthere and hopes for some sort ofapprenticeship. She's already "one ofthe gang", and joins in for shift leaguebeer and ball-games.

After shift, she's an excellent cook,enjoys swimming, and keeps herselfconstantly in stitches . at the sewingmachine!

they'll swing westward through the SierraMadre mountains and then down thePacific coastline. According to Olga,this stretch of the trip presents miles andmiles of breath-taking scenery. She'shoping Luis will agree to a slight detourso that she can christen her new bikinion the beaches at Acapulco.

Personnel at Inco's CIa rabelle open pitmay remember Luis. He worked thereafter he joined the company in 67,then the same year, joined the numbertwo research station team at the PortColborne nickel refinery, where he's

worked since.There's an odd twist to the Ponce's

Guatemalan trip.They'll leave here in mid-summer and

arrive there in mid-winter. That's rightfolks and all in ten days.

"It's a fact," Luis confirmed, "but it'sa very mild winter. We certainly won't bethrowing snowballs. The temperaturestays around the 70-degree mark." A biggrin spread across his face. "Whoknows - mid-winter temperature therecould be higher than mid-summertemperatures here - we'll see."

PredictWord has it that lncos environmentalcontrol department is up to something.'Twould appear that certain personnel arenow engaged in the fine art of weatherforecasting. And with very good reason.This weather study group is an integralpart of the relatively new voluntaryinterru ptive emission program.

Despite the super stack's fineperformance and the maintenance of anemission level that more than meetsOntario's requirements, certain atmos-pheric conditions have a varied effecton the stack's "plume". Ideally, theplume travels straight up, four to fivethousand feet, then disperses in the upperlevels and is rendered impotent. Unfor-tunately, these ideal conditions do notalways prevail: this is where our weatherforecasters come in.

PREDICT:And they know just what to look for.

To hear superintendent of environmentalcontrol, Charlie Ferguson, tell it, you'dalmost think the procedure bordered onsimplicity,

Pertinent information is extracted froma weather mapping machine linkeddirectly with the Department of Trans-portation 's Toronto weather office.Wind direction and velocity must beconsidered; if there's little or no wind,stagnation occurs. Temperature profilesmust be taken; if higher rather than lowertemperatures are recorded at increasingaltitudes, a limited mixing height occurswhich puts a ceiling on the plume'sability to rise normally. Changing

weather patterns are watched constantly,for they affect the stack's plume.

By interpreting the forecast and com-bining it with knowledge of the plume'sbehaviour, the study group can predictwhen and where the possibility of anundesirable concentration of sulphurdioxide will occur. In such cases, thesmelter is advised and cutback proce-dures instituted.

PREVENT:

The prediction is then immediatelysubstantiated by a visit to the actual area

in question. A specially-equippedfour-wheel drive mobile monitor is usedto double-check the prediction, and theresults are radioed back to home base.After further analysis, additional decisionsare made regarding the cutback.

PROTECT:

The high standard used by the com-pany's environmental control section isaimed at protecting vegetation, thus ournew voluntary interruptive emissionprogramme ensures a high level of airquality in the Sudbury area.

RiggersRigger - "a person whose work isfitting the rigging of ships or one whoworks with hoisting tackle and the like."That's one dictionary definition of thatoccupation. And while mine riggersgenerally may not be too adept at fittingthe rigging on a ship, just turn them looseon any of the heavy equipment in use atthe mines and they II fit it or move it withdeceptive ease.

Load-haul-dump machines, ore cars,locomotives, pumps, transformers,crushers, tipples and conveyors aremoved and installed as required byriggers at the various mines. Suchtasks take considerable skill andknow- how.

Moving heavy equipment on surface isone thing; slinging it down a mine shaftand snaking it through drifts underground

is another matter entirely: one at whichthe mine riggers excel.

At Creighton mine number nine shaftrecently, the riggers moved a partlydisassembled load-haul-dump machine,weighing about six tons, from surfaceto 6600 level.

In that operation the cage was firstraised above surface in the shaft andthen, from a safe platform in the shaft,the riggers attached special wire ropeslings to the bottom of the cage. Thesein turn were hooked to the U-ID and,operating on a 'slow bell", the cage wasraised until the scooptram was pulled intothe shaft beneath the cage. Thus suspended, it was slowly lowered to the6600 level and, in order to ensure safepassage, was lowered at a maximum rate

of 100 feet per minute. Normal cagespeed is 2,450 feet per minute.

At the 6600 level, after a trip of morethan one hour, the job of pulling themachine from the shaft into the stationis a tricky one, with a restricted workarea. However, using the station tuggerhoist and a fine sense of timing, theriggers made that task look easy.

On the level, the LHD machine wasorded onto a flat truck, taken to the

stope. and hoisted to the working area,where it was assembled and readied formuck moving. Rigger boss Bob Nelsonwas in command throughout the wholeopera! on

Of course, all rigging jobs are not asspectacular. One of the routine rigger

tasks is the inspection, servicing andtesting of all hoisting ropes, safetydevices, head sheaves, skip dumps andall shaft conveyances.

Hoisting ropes and cage safety devicesare inspected daily. A weekly ropeinspection is made in more detail and,monthly, the rope size is measured bymicrometer.

Every three months all cages equippedwith safety devices are "drop-tested" atlocation, and on drum hoists, the hoistingropes are recapped every six months.Recapping consists of cutting thatsection of the rope around the thimbleand within the clamps, plus an 8-footlength which is sent to the Ministry ofNatural Resources for testing. A smallersection is kept at the mine. A fresh

section of rope is then bent around thethimble and clamped.

The section retained at the mine iscarefully examined and a 'bend test" iscarried out. This consists of taking asingle strand of wire from the rope,placing it in the vise in a special tool,and manually bending the wire back andforth until it breaks. A new strand willstand in excess of 12 bends beforebreaking but this decreases to eight ornine bends with wear. Each wire in asingle strand is tested in this manner.

When the riggers are not movingequipment or inspecting hoisting ropesand conveyances, there is always work inthe shop: slings to splice and a myriadof block-and-tackle equipment to keepin first class shape.

As the cage is raised the machine is slowly drawn into the shaft.Bob Nelson signals to the tugger hoist operator to ease therestraining cable which prevents the load from swinging freely intothe shaft causing damage.

The radio receiver crackles withinformation and XM46-804 is on his wayto fight a fire.

A local fire hall scene? No,Emergency Radio Service, Sudbury, hasreceived information about a fire, andLynn Mitchell has answered the call.

Lynn, a diesel loaderman at Froodmine, is XM46-804 and an ERSS memberThe two-way radio in his car has justinformed him of the fire.

ERSS is a 35-member organization, ofwhich more than half are Inco employees.The group operates on the citizens bandradio frequency, and is divided into fivegeographical areas, with each areaconsisting of a base monitor plusassigned mobile units.

The 30 radio-equipped mobile units

and the 25 base stations of ERSS aid andassist police and fire departments in theSudbury region, as well as privatecitizens and the Emergency MeasuresOrganization.

One example of the group's service tothe community was the recent blooddonor clinc held by the United Steel-workers of America Local 6500 at theirhall on Frood Rd. On that occasion,members of ERSS provided donors withtransportation to and from the clinic. Thecalls were monitored by Dave Smith, astationary engineer at the Copper Cliffnumber one sub-station, and, from hishome in Sudbury, mobile units were dis-patched to the donors' homes. The groupalso collected donations for a recent GirlGuide telethon and provided SudburyCancer Society canvassers with trans-

portation during their canvass of theSudbury area.

During the past three years, ERSSmembers have assisted citizens on some380 separate occasions. Two hundredof these calls were to Regional Policeheadquarters, usually concerning trafficaccidents.

The ERSS is the largest amateur radiogroup in the Sudbury area and recentlyplaced its 25 base stations on 24 houraday service.

"Our plan for Emergency RadioService," says Bill Smith, public relationsofficer for the group, "is to expand andbecome a more effective organization inorder to aid the citizens of the Sudburyarea, and to work closely with otherorganizations to provide emergencyservice through radio communciation."

Sob Cha/oux confirms information about the Al Fraser awaits further instructions on the location of a blood donor who requireslocation of a grass fire. Sob is a/so a member transportation to the Steelworkers Union building. Many of Al's friends at the Emergencyof the Sudbury volunteer tire brigaoe. Radio Service and those who talk to him on the air simply refer to him as XM46686.

In April '73, lnco presented plans toWalden representatives, together witha promise to make that town's swimminghole - located at the west end ofMeatbird Lake, just off highway 536mid-way between Lively and Creighton- one of the finest in Ontario.

That promise has been kept. Therejuvenated two-acre pool and parkarea was officially opened and turnedover to Walden council last month.

How does Inco's agriculturaldepartment rejuvenate a swimminghole? Very carefully Here's therecipe:

Remove water and 12,000 tons of"ooze" etc. Add 4,000 tons of beachsand, 500 tons of river stone, 5,000tons of fill. Then top with 200 trees,half an acre of sod, and one acre ofseeding.

Blend with tender loving care, thenfill with drinking water from theCreighton water treatment plant.

Because the intersection was so uniqueit would naturally take a similar trafficsignal system to control it. Wilf Ripley,Sudburys city traffic engineer andformer Copper Cliff mines mechanicaldepartment employee, was responsiblefor a majority of the systems design,notably his first in this particular field.He recalled quite vividly the challengeand frustration, the problems andtriumphs, which resulted in the ultimatesuccess.

Of prime concern were the proposedsIgna' head arrangement (which did notconform to the standards then requiredby the Department of Highways) and theactual controHer itself (which would notonly handle twe've lanes of traffic, but

would also have to be compatible withtrain signals,)

After much planning and great effort,the system was fully operational inDecember of 59, and functioned withonly minor adjustments till December of'72, at which time a more elaboratecontroller was installed, Speaking ofwhich . the controller features a fixedtime control which switches on auto-matically during rush hours, providing foran increased traffic flow to and fromCopper Cliff, In all, an extremely capableand sophisticated system that expeditestmfflc while minimizing accidentfrequency.

Det3ils were provided by Wilf Ripleyregarding an accident tabulation covering'st year thirty-five accidents

with nine injuries. Its interesting to notethat no trains were involved, and, despiteits nickname, the crossing was respon-sible for no fatalities. Ripleys believeit or not . , the peak projected figurefor mid-July traffic was 35000 vehiclesdaily, with a maximum of 3,900 between4:15 and 5:15 p.m.

However, no matter how efficient thesystem. there will always be accidents.In April of this year. a single-car collisionvery nearly demoUshed the systemscontroUer. In the two-month interim,while the controller was being rebuilt,traffic was handled surprisingly effectivelyby simp'e stop-caution lights.

Tomorrow? The future, says Wilf,ho'ds substantial changes. Perhaps as

soon as 1975 or 1976. The entirecrossing is expected to be simplified asthe result of a million-dollar transitimprovement project. However, regard-less of ultimate re-location plans, therailway track will remain. Actual track-traffic will probably be reduced, perhapsre-routed, particularly during rush hours'.

Value of this unique traffic signalsystem, to replace, is estimated at$20000. Small price to pay for one ofCanada's most comp'ex traffic signa'systems.

Festival Folk. 4 A rare guest made a most mpressive

appearance at this years third annualNorthern Lights Folk Arts Festival. Theoccasion was appropriately marked by adisplay of the incomparable auroraborealis, otherwise known as.northern lights! And a good omen it was,for hot sunshine and cool moonshineprevailed throughout the three-day affair.

Purpose of the festival is to createand further local interest in arts, crafts,and folk music. To this end, special

display booths were scattered throughoutSudburys Bell Park grounds, andintermingling strains of guitar and fiddlecould be heard from the three concurrentstage areas.

As a charitable, non-profit organization, the festivals existence is entirelydependent upon grants and donations.Incos $1000 contribution, according

to festival co-ordinator Fred Pawluk,was one of the big factors that made it

all possible.

Festival offered many oppor-tunities for leisurely strolls.

Attendance high for third annualNorthern Lights Folk Arts Festival.

Bell Park provided an excellent setting for the three-day folk arts festival. After browsingthrough the arts and crafts displays, spectators en/oyed sounds from three stage areas.

If you're a bird watcher - you're inluck. The Lake Laurentian ConservationArea is one of the best places n thedistrict for observing birds in their naturalsurroundings. There's even a specialbirdwatchers trail.

For picnic overs, there are tables andbarbeoue facilities, a chorus of bullfrogsproviding "chugarum" music and ananthill not far awiiy - f you want toguess whos coming to dinner.

Suggestionawards

The company's employee suggestionplan programme continues to produce agreat variety of economical and practicalideas for improvements in operations,maintenance, safety, and workingconditions. It's also a good source of someextra "found" dollars for the award winners

Last month produced 32 awards rangingfrom $435 to $10, for a total of $1,645. Thewinners are listed here in descending orderof the amount awarded.

Vince Guidoccio, a blacksmith at thecopper refinery, was top money winner at$435. Vince proposed changing the designof the heading tool, or die, for fabricatinganode push-up pins. His idea of a tapereddie block eliminated the forging formerlyrequired.

Ringing the cash register for the first time,to the tune of $260, Richard Poulin, aninstrumentman at the smelter, devised asolenoid and timer which automaticallyintroduces plant air into the supply line tothe OIL acid plant at regular intervals. Thisacts as a purge and prevents the line fromplugging.

Another sizeable award, $190, went toDon Austin, of the copper refinery. Amaintenance mechanic for many years, Don

suggested using a set of steel blocks onoverhead crane rails to preventmisalignment. Don has been home-boundfor some time, recovering from surgery, andwas happy to earn of his award.

Also at the copper refinery, Allen Neeleywas awarded $145 for his idea of installingone-inch pipes when rebricking dutchovens.

Jean Gagnon of the iron ore plant, won a$75 for his suggestion of a bin and screwconveyor for returns to the decomposer.Jim Jerome, from the copper refinery,proposed redirecting solution lines to thenumber one circulating tank, an idea worth$50.

For suggesting the installation of an angleiron post on number 12 conveyor, ClaudeCayen of the copper refinery was awarded$35. Picking up $30 awards were HarryLych of the smelter, for suggesting slots indrying hearth drophole coverlifters, resultingin easier installation, and GeraldCharbonneau, of the iron ore plant, for hisidea to place a chute and disposal containeroutside door 53.

There were four $25 award winners:Alme Chartler of the transportationdepartment, who devised a solid plate over-deck for hot metal cars; Yolland Blals fromthe smelter, for warning lights and a horn at

the sand bins; Earl Johnston, also from thesmelter, who saw a need for clamps on highpressure hoses for the Gaspe puncher; andHarold Darcy, of the iron ore plant, whosuggested valves on an acid line from theOIL acid plant.

Receiving $20 awards were: BernardPlcher, for a rubber pad idea at the bottomof welding stub containers, and GerardGeurin, for his thoughts on the relocation ofshop welding cable. Both men are withcentral shops. Robert Miller and WilfredCollins of the copper refinery also hadaward winning ideas. Robert proposedcertain door numbering and other signs.Wilfred suggested fencing off the areabeneath the number two vertical furnacelaunder. The other five $20 winners were allfrom the iron ore plant: Alphonse Pllon, fora platform addition at the discharge end ofthree conveyors; Leland Blols andJohannes Goehard, who togethersuggested a rack to hold plug valvewrenches; Harold Darcy won two of theawards; one for suggesting an exhaust inthe demineralization area, and one forproposing a level alarm on acid storagetanks; and Alcide Carriere, who rang thebell with his idea for bright coloured keytags for safety rooms.

Ronald Broulllette, of the transportationdepartment, picked up $1 5 for seeing theneed for additional control lights at theCopper Cliff South mine loading tracks. Alsocashing in for $15 were Keith Morning,copper refinery, for a backstop on thecasting office roof ladder, and VincentLynds, iron ore plant, who figured a light onthe tailings line would improve visibilitythere.

Eight $10 awards went to: Albert Naultand Dixon Maclntyre of utilities, forproposing a guardrail at the number twooxygen plant cooling tower; MitchellPlexman, also of utilities, for working Out animproved valve position change on thewalkway behind the oxygen compressor;Leo Bouffard, matte processing, fordevising a safer valve operation at numberfour roaster; Jean-Guy Quevillon, smelter,who suggested adding a window in the doorof the nickel converter fitters' shack;Leveme Pltzei, smelter, for proposing paintstripes on low beams; Benson Mullen, ironore plant, for a window in the powerhouselaboratory door; and James Barclay, ironore plant, who saw a need to identify controlbuttons for overhead crane operation.

Congratulations to all, for their awardwinning efforts.

General engineering....GDuffers and divot devotees of all typeswere on hand for general engineering'svery popular annual golf tournament.With "Sandy" Sandiford as organizer,drawmaster and indefatigable toiler, itwould have been difficult to go wrongand even last year's highly successfultournament was topped.

Helping to ensure a perfect day wasLively Golf Club's Walter Chornenky,who supervised all clubhouse activities2nd was the master chef in the prepara-tion of about 200 juicy steaks that wereenioyed at the windup.

With shotgun starts at 8 am, and1 p.m., a total of 112 golfing addictswere accommodated, and when the lastputt had been holed out, and scores tal-lied. the low gross winner proved to beHarold Martin of the Construction Equip-ment Company, a guest who carded arespectable 72 on the sporty par 66

course. Last year's low gross winner,Neil Smith, was runner-up this year witha 73.

Moe Keany won low net followed bySam Martin, son of Harold. The topInco scorer, and winner of the ExcelsiorPainters' trophy, was Gary Miller of thesurvey crew, with an 18-hole score of 78.

In a "closest to the hole" contest, RayWard was best at 17 feet; must have beenlate in the day when that competitionwas on 17 feet ???

And from the design section, a winnerin a category that not all consider anhonour, that of most honest golfer, orbetter still, "man with the mostest", TerryMyers earned that title with a nifty 154Strokes.

Great tournament, good fun, superbfood, and everyone already anticipatingnext year's meet. "It'll be a good one,I'll guarantee that," smiled "Sandy".

L F .... Idyiwylde InvitationalThe 27th annual Idylwylde InvitationalGolf Tournament saw the biggest field todate, a whopping 204 golfers. Many ofthe province's better amateur golfersmatched shots with district and host clubplayers for a bevy of prizes. Weather andplaying conditions were good, and a largegallery followed Sunday's final matches.

Former Idylwylde top player, FredSilver, was top qualifier with a record-breaking round of 66 on the par 72,6,600-yard course.

Qualifying rounds were played onFriday; with matches on Saturday andSunday. Championship and first threeflights were match play (head-to-headcompetition), and the other eight flightswere medal (total score) play.

Winner of the championship flight andthe lnco trophy was Ken Doig, fromSeaforth, Ontario, who edged out hisfriend Bob Bradley by one stroke.

Inco pensioner Bill Regan was lowIdylwylde qualifier for the second straightyear, and again won the traditional greenjacket. Bill beat Paul Brunelle for thehonour, but Paul went on to win the firstflight.

Young Tim Silver won the second flightby beating veteran Tommy Woodal, andanother youngster with a golfing tradi-tion, Bill Morland, Jr., of North Bay, wonthe third flight. His dad was a consola-tion prize winner in the second flight.

Rick Noble of the host club won fourthflight, with John Green, formerly of Idyl-wylde, winning the fifth.

Among the Inco players was DonLowney, formerly of purchasing and nowa resident of Pittsburgh, who managed aconsolation win in a late flight.

Vern Johnston and his wife Edna wereagain key figures on Don Brown's com-petent tournament committee.

A quick trip around the local shift softballcircuit indicates the situation is much asit was last year with one very notableexception: there is no active league inCopper Cliff! That veritable bastion ofbaseball found itself unable to promotea league. Former league convener ofmany years, Ray Frattini. said rathersadly, It's really too bad and I don't likeit. But what can you do? Most of ourpast players said they couldnt getorganized because of guys off onvacation, on shift, or transferring. And,too, the fellows seem to have otherinterests now," he added, "I think it waseasier last year with the vacationshutdown."

At the copper refinery, nickel refinery,and iron ore plant, a similar situationprevails. Although efforts were made toget some action, none of the locationswas able to produce organized leagues.

The situation is not unique, and thehistory of every local sport, whethersoccer, baseball, hockey, or fastball, youname it, they all indicate great peaks andvalleys of popularity. Softball currentlyappears to be "down in the valley".

At Creighton, there is no shift league,

but a number of Creighton players areon some of the six teams in the WaldenSoftball League, as they were last year.

Levack faces a similar situation with noactive league of its own, but Levackplayers are on several of the teams inthe Onaping Falls Softball League.

And over at Garson, they too have nomine shift league, but, as last year theyhave entries in several classes in theGarson Community Softball League,which includes teams from lnco, Falcon-bridge, and the town.

One bright spot in the picture is therecent interest shown in 'blooper" ballby the general engineering department.Played the same as softball, but withoutthe flashy, fastball pitchers with their oneor no-hitters, the ball is more or less"lobbed" over the plate so there's plentyof hitting and running action. Umpireshaven't been required as yet, an honoursystem being adequate.

There are six teams in this "blooper"ball league, including one all-girl entry.The teams are: Environmental, coachedby Brian Bell; Design, with Hans Schmidtat the helm; Specialists and Maintenance,led by Dick Mclvor; Engineering Services,

in the charge of Chuck Mossey; Utilities,coached by Gary Miller, and thestriking" Secretary's entry headed by

Kirsty Cummins. Each team plays once aweek at the Copper Cliff high schoolgrounds with Hans Schmidt and ChuckMossey keeping the league functioning.

Frood-Stobie remains the only miningarea with an action-packed shift leagueof its own. There are eight teams fightingfor a playoff spot. In order of standing early in July, theteams are: Mechanical; Frood 600 level;Little Stobie; Electrical; Office; Stobie 7shaft; Frood 2200 level, and StobieEngineering. "It's a pretty well-balancedleague," observed Bob Kerr. "We'replaying a 16-game schedule and the finalleague standings should be close."
