Sta te Representa t ive Helen Giddings deserves to be applauded again. She has served in the state legislature for more than two decades, was the first female to head the Dallas Black Chamber of Commerce, and she helped to lead the fight against the evil system of apartheid in South Africa which led to the destruction of the souls of whites, Blacks and people of mixed race in that African country. In other words, Representative Giddings has been a force of good in our community. Her most recent contribution comes in the form of an awards program saluting unsung heroes in District 109 which she serves. She is hosting a golf tournament on September 5th that will be held at the Texas Star Golf Course in Euless. Numerous celebrities, including Skip Murphy, Chris Arnold and other members of their team are expected to participate in the event that Representative Giddings intends to hold annually.“There are some wonderful people who do great things in my district and throughout our city,” Representative Giddings said during a recent interview. “My staff and I wanted to do something

to recognize these people and to say thank you for the contributions that they are making on a daily basis. They are selfless individuals who always put the needs of others first.”The proceeds from the tournament are going towards scholarship programs for deserving people and for various chari table organizat ions in our community, Representative Giddings said. “We are hoping to have a tremendous event and will set a

precedent for what we intend to do in years to come.”There is still room for golfers and sponsors for the events. Those who want to participate as players or sponsors should call Rongel Johnson, one of the coordinators for the event, at 504-251-6402. The event is going to sponsor various contests for golfers, a silent auction will be conducted and gift bags and other items will be given to participants.“This is an event for people who want to help students, who want to improve our communities and who want to enjoy themselves,” said Rep. Giddings. “You don’t have to be a golfer to participate. You may be the executive of a company that wants to be a sponsor. We welcome your participation.”

Hats off to Helen

Our new school s u p e r i n t e n d e n t Mike Miles is a m u c h n e e d e d breath of fresh air. He has come into his position, one of the most important in our city, with new ideas and a p a s s i o n f o r

excellence. He is pushing the people who work for him and demanding that they commit themselves to standards of excellence. Nothing else is acceptable, he says.

It is refreshing to see the approach to education that the new superintendent is taking. After all, he heads the institution that is responsible for the growth and our school children, one of most significant resources. It is clear from the various moves that he has made that the school system will not be a place where you hold a job because you know someone or because you share the same bed with a person of influence. It appears that the determining factor in promotion in the system will be performance. And that is as it should be.

Mr. Miles is a graduate of West Point who served in the military. During the course of his career, no doubt, he had to make decisions that determined whether people lived or died. He, himself, has been an educator, working with school children. Having a person of his caliber and experience in the seat that he occupies has been long overdue in Dallas.

In the past it was easy to get a well-paying job in the Dallas Independent School System. You survived because of who you knew and not what you knew. You had to be someone’s friend, in someone’s club or be a member of someone’s fraternity to succeed. Now, those days are apparently over and finished.

While heading a school system in Colorado, Superintendent Miles earned a reputation for integrity and fairness. Working long hours, he got the desired results from the people who worked for him and from the children who attended the schools he ran. We are hopeful that he will produce similar results in Dallas.

We welcome his leadership and stand ready to work with him, to ease his introduction into the community and to communicate with him as he seeks to lead a system that trains the minds of our young; a system that desperately needs his commitment, his experience and his passion.

"No matter how carefully you plan your goals they will never be more than pipe dreams unless you pursue them with gusto."

MINISTER OF THE WEEK

STUDENT OF THE WEEK

William Blair, Jr.

Not only is prayer a priority, but prayer is also a ministry unto the Lord. God calls us a priest unto Him. This thought in mind suggest to us that we are to minister to God. I suggest that we are to minister to God before we minister to people. As children of God we minister to Him through prayer, meditation, praise and worship. This priestly duty is bestowed upon us because of the blood of Jesus. His blood has made us righteous so that we may enter into the Holy of Holies. Thanks be to God when we enter into our prayer closet, there are no restrictions nor reservations.

This week I found myself in Arlington. Every since Gloria’s opened in the Arlington Highlands I have so been looking forward to having a bite to eat. As with this visit it is always busy around dinner time so I just knew I was in for a treat especially since I have had wonderful meals at their other locations. Well, not so… Oh my!! Service was slow but I thought that is due to the heavy volume of clients to be served. I had a simple order of beef fajita Chimichanga with Spanish rice and refried beans. As with all orders I was brought chips, salsa and their black bean dip while I waited for my order to be prepared. The salsa is made with canned tomatoes that have a metallic taste but the black bean dip is simply superb. The pairing of the two makes the salsa all the more disappointing. My Chimichanga was served warm not hot making the homemade tortilla tough. The best I could do is pick at the dish to find the beef tough. The rice was surprisingly tasty albeit dry. My server tried to make good and have

the kitchen remake my dish but the only thing that changed was it was hot and tough. This is a dish best left off of the menu lukewarm or hot the tortilla is not something you can digest. I requested their desert menu but after a 30- minute wait I had enough. If the meal I was served was any

indication of what desert would be it too would be a disappointment. Now, the table next to me chose a shrimp dish. It’s aromatic fragrance and the patron’s eagerness to consume it gives me hope that there are items that are worthy of Gloria’s reputation. As I was leaving I saw a chocolate desert being served that had the eye appeal that said that although my experience wasn’t what it should have been there is hope. Remember it only takes a bite to make a good or bad impression. Gloria’s Restaurants & Bar / 3901 Arlington Highlands # 137 Arlington, TX 76018 www.gloriasrestaurants.com

Dear Dr. Hollie,My husband works with a group of women, and he gets a lot of their “girl talk”. I’ve met a few of them, and they seem nice enough. I mean, I don’t have any problems with any of them. But I have started disliking some of the things that they are telling him. One in particular, I’ve noticed by what he’s telling me, shares very graphic details of her love life. She is a single woman and has had various partners since knowing my husband. She tells him all her practices and likes and dislikes. I’m not really sure why it makes me uncomfortable, but it does. Am I being petty?

Uncomfortable Wife

Dear Uncomfortable,

I agree with you that this conversation should not be going on. The woman should not be sharing her experiences, I think with anyone, but most especially your husband. Suggest to your husband that he removes himself from the conversations if the woman continues. It is very much inappropriate and not something that he should want or need to hear.

Back in June of this year a wonderful Event for Cancer survivors began with clear blue skies, perfect for the first Carrington Cares Cancer Survivor Walk. Over 100 Carrington College® Mesquite students, faculty, family members, and volunteers set out to raise awareness for two causes close to the community’s heart: the Cancer Survivors Student Scholarship Fund and Mesquite Social Services. “With the help of 20 local businesses, we were able to raise over $500 for the charities through donation buckets placed along the one and two mile walk routes. Additionally, we provided the community with an event that welcomed all age groups by offering everything from a car wash and games to a bouncy castle and face painting for kids,” said Melody Rider, executive director of the campus. “The walk was such a wonderful success that the students have already begun planning for next year!”

The Carrington Cares Cancer Survivor walk r e c o g n i z e d e i g h t participating cancer survivors; three of which were Carrington students. In addition to recognizing the strength and perseverance in the community, the walk provided attendees with medical screenings such as free mammogram sign-ups, physicals, vision screenings, and conducted a blood drive. “Because Carrington College is new to the Mesquite area, we wanted to show that our campus is more than just a school; it is a support system for the broader community,” said Rider. “We have a wonderful group of students whose skills will make such a positive difference in the community.” The event also helped to raise awareness for a complimentary GED prep class that Carrington College Mesquite staff offers to clients of the Mesquite Social Services, in order to help escalate lives through education.

The London Olympics were the best I've seen so far in my lifetime. I'm not surprised that the 2012 Summer Olympics were full of world record performances. The London Olympics was the platform for the world's best athletes to come together for two weeks of non-stop action, and when you are a world class athlete competing under these conditions, it somtimes requires a world- record performance to win! There were 25 world records set in the

London games, and a lot of those records were in the same sport .There were world records set in the sport of Archery,2

world records South Korea. There were 3 records set in Track and Field, David Rudisha of Kenya set a record in the 800 meter run and the USA women's 4x100 meter relay. The team of Jamaica Mens 4x 100 meter relay, Elena Lashmanova, of Russia set a world record in the womens 20-kilometer race walk.

There were 5 world records in the sport of cycling. Alexei Klimov of Russia set a world record in the sport of Shooting. There were 8 records set in swimming, and 6 in weight lifting. There are some many different sports and so many great performances its hard to list everything. But there were some unforgettable moments in London that really made my eyes widen with surprise. Here are a few of those moments:Allyson Felix was great in the 200 meter final. Ashton Eaton proved he was the Worlds Greatest Athlete. Tony McQuay' ran a 43.4 split on the third leg of the 4x400 meter relay and gave Angelo Taylor a 2 step lead.Chasing him for the Bahamas was the unheralded Ramon Miller, who has a personal best 44.87 steadily gained on Taylor with some fearless running. With 100 meters left Miller was a step behind Taylor's shoulder. With 60 meters to go Miller roared past Taylor and took his island nation a gold medal! The USA women destroyed the world record with one of

histories greatest relay performances. And the 5 fab,( no not Chris Webber and the boys) this is Gabby Douglass and crew USA Gymnastics. These games were everything they were built up to be. The best Athletes in the world do what they do best, compete at a world c lass level , and that ' s good spor ts entertainment!

May God bless you and Help Us Change the World!!!

Welcome to the weekend, Baaaby! Thank goodness for the rain this week..Even though I woke up Wednesday Morning with no electricity, talk about being in a happy zone, lol! My next thought was, "What would I do with the 305 Million Dollars, or the cash option 213 Million in Powerball lottery money that might be coming my way Wednesday evening. Well, after much contemplation, I figured 22 million in tithes right off of the top, but how to do it? I don't believe it's as simple as giving your home church all that cash. Just like people who win are not prepared to handle that kinda cash, often opening a Pandora's Box of troubles, so might your local church. So I've decided to give 1 Million to the 3 churches that have made a difference in my life. That's Sunset Missionary Baptist in

Texarkana, Lighthouse MBC in Chicago and BibleWay Community Baptist in Irving! That leaves almost 19 Million, which I'd use to set up a Christian foundation, whose goals would be to bless "worthy" individuals, churches and initiatives based on 500,000 dollars total each year. That means this 19 Million, earning 2.5 percent yearly would bless until Jesus comes to rapture us, whether 20 years from now or a thousand! Now that leaves me with, hmmm, lets see, abooooout 190 Million in cash, lol! I'd do the same for my family with the next 22

Million, insuring an education for every member and opportunities to create better lives for themselves...Jeez, I've still got 170 Million left....After the prerequisite shopping sprees for those I care about and blessing the same folks with cash, buying 3 homes, 1 in Jamaica, One in Dallas and one in Chicago, 2 cars at each of the 3 , a jet, small yacht, S-E-C-U-R-I-T-Y, lol, etc. I'd have about 125 Million left! What would I invest in? Nothing comes to mind as the purpose of investing is to make money...At this point I'd set up an allowance....50 Million in a foundation insures about a Million a year to live on, even if my wife and I reach 150.It now becomes prudent to preserve the money that's left...75 Million left? At this point, I'd sit down with Warren Buffet, Richard Branson, Jay Z and Dirk and Tony Romo and just vibe. Man, this is harder than I thought,lol... I'd busy myself with the 3 foundations I'd set up, because everybody needs something to do and see where God leads me! Certainly I would have Heaven as my goal, remembering what the Bible

says about the rich man, camel and the eye of a needle, lol! Finally, after sharing my adventures with you, our loyal readers for the 5 years in which the above things are estimated to happen, I'd turn this column over to someone else, figuring 15 years of volunteer writing would be enough! It would be time to gather what I've written about and share the adventure in an E-Book! They also must think about educating their congregation about retirement planning. H o w d o e s r e t i r e m e n t planning effect the church?

When it comes to saving for retirement, the advice is to start early. But for those in the ministry, saving for retirement is often one of the first things to be set aside for another day. Retirement savings will enable the pastor and his congregation to continue to provide for themselves and their family in future years. This will also assist in strong support in continuing God’s work. I believe in educating and helping pastors and their congregation in properly planning for retirement as "a blessing beyond measure" and encourage churches and other ministries to make it a priority. Many (especially pastors) are ‘wired’ to concentrate on other things besides their own retirement planning. It is important to start thinking about planning your retirement early-on in order to provide the opportunity for long term financial growth."

When thinking of ways to show your appreciation for your pastors, church staffs, and the congregation, why not think of helping them save for retirement? When a church decides to contribute to retirement for its pastors and staff, it is helping them plan for the future and encouraging them in their ministry today. As a community we turn to our churches for guidance. The church can also help their members with retirement planning by showing them ways to save and budget their money. When the congregation begins to see their financial growth it will also increase the church members tithing status. How does retirement planning affect the church?

The church is the foundation in our lives, and we as a people believe in our leadership. Our pastors are a very strong pillars and we lean on them. The church not only saves souls, but the church can also save

finances. Because we hold our pastors in a special place in our lives, it is also important to make sure they can and will be able to retire and enjoy the fruits of their labor.

When Mike Miles, the Superintendent of the Dallas ISD, was a second grade student at an elementary school in Colorado Springs, Colorado he suffered from a severe speech impediment that kept him from communicating properly with his fellow students, his teachers and his playmates. It was embarrassing, painful and confusing for the youngster, the son of an Army Sargent whose travels took his family to distant parts of the world. In class teachers waited patiently for words to roll from his tongue. At times some students chuckled as he struggled to speak, something that seemed to come quite easily for others. “Two of my teachers took me by the hand and told me that they were going to help me with my problem,” said Miles, a West Point graduate who is the twenty-fifth superintendent of the Dallas school

system. “They worked with me tirelessly and my speech improved,” he said, as he recalled one of richest experiences of his elementary school years. “They helped me and gave me a chance.” Miles, a former State Department employee, who headed a school system in Colorado prior to coming to Dallas, said that his father, Floyd, a non-commissioned officer and his mother, Watanabe, a native of Japan who spoke little English, struggled while raising a family of eight children on a single military salary. “Even though we were poor our parents instilled in us a duty to assist other people,” Miles said. “My father insisted that we have a concern for others. I remember a time when I was in the 8th grade and my father managed to save enough money to take food to a family that was poorer than we were. What he did, and what my teachers did became a central part of my development.”

Miles excelled as a middle and senior high school student. He had decided years earlier where he wanted to attend college and worked towards that goal. Each step along the way a teacher played an integral role in his development. “In high school I had an experience with students from other schools and I discovered that I was not as smart as I thought I was,” said Miles, who was baptized at the Fountain Baptist Church in Fountain, Colorado located near Colorado Springs. Uncertain if he was good enough to get into West Point, he reached out to his teachers, seeking their support and guidance. One teacher, Mary Lou Shearn, began to press him and insisted on excellent grades and conduct. She had him read literature written by renown authors and recruited other teachers to assist her in preparing Miles for his future. “She helped me because she saw that I had potential,” said Miles, who has three children with his wife, Karen. “And I

want to see what occurred in my life occur in the life of every student in our school system,. I do not intend to sell any kid short. I want to give each of them the best education possible.” Those who know Miles well said that they believe he will be successful in leading the Dallas school system, just as he was while serving in the army’s elite ranger battalion where he commanded an infantry rifle company. After leaving the military, he studied Slavic languages at the University of California at Berkeley and the University of Leningrad in Russia. “I do not think that Dallas has ever had a superintendent with the capabilities that Mike Miles has,” said a long-time Dallas educator who asked that her name not be used. “He will confront the challenges that he faces directly and will see to it that our children receive the educations that they deserve. He is not about nonsense. What he brings to the table is what we need at this moment in our history,” she said.

Water Your Own

GardenBy Geraldine Davidson- Hooker

It has occurred to me that many spouses do not water their garden adequately. "What is she talking about," you say, "I don't even have a garden!" You may not have a garden in the traditional sense, but do you know your marriage can be likened unto a garden as well?

Within the institution of marriage is a sacred foundation that should be carefully nurtured so that it may beautifully thrive. Within this proverbial small plot of land, we must till the soil so plants may breathe and spread their roots, yanking out weeds that may choke

them and prevent the seedlings from growing.

Within this same godly terrain, it is often necessary to built up a small fence around the garden, to prevent hungry animals from stealing what we have carefully planted and nurtured.

I've spoken to many discontented spouses, hearing such comments as, "She doesn't care about my needs," "He doesn't listen anymore," "What happened to the romance?" Each one of these concerns is a seed that has the potential of becoming a f l o w e r o r a w e e d . W h a t determines the future of each seed

is if we will take the time, energy and care to dig down deep in the soil, and to offer each seed the gift of ourselves.

Are there un-addressed issues? Then address them! Are their hurts and neglects? Then feed and heal them!

Just as it is wise to water our own gardens, we must also regard our r e l a t i o n s h i p w i t h G o d j u s t as tenderly; taking care to water our faith with the word of God, and pulling out weeds that may threaten our walk.

How does YOUR garden grow?

August 10th the Detroit Tigers made a clear and strong statement in the three game series against the Texas Rangers wining the first game 6 to 2. Tiger player Austin Jackson achieved his career first, in the park home run in the seventh inning driving in 3 runs.

Ranger right fielder Nelson Cruz made a diving attempt to catch the ball which bounced right in front of him and then over his glove and the wall.

Mike Olt who was just called up from the Ranger Double A team on August the 1str to prove he is the rookie that is worth watching. Saturday, August 11 he turned the tables against the Tigers and in the bottom of the ninth pinch hit drives in Cruz. This RBI broke the tie so that the Rangers won 2 to 1 over Detroit.

Sunday afternoon in 100 degree weather the Ranges regained their stride as they ended the series with a sound 8 to 3 win.

It appears that Josh Hamilton has regained his focus as he hit his 32nd home run that drove in 3 runs. Pitcher Yu Darvish did his part as he struck out 8.

By Dr. Lew BlackburnDallas ISD Trustee, District 5 School begins Aug. 27 and there is rising anticipation of the new year in Dallas ISD as we prepare to welcome almost 160,000 s tudents for the 2012-2013 school year. Getting to school on time every day—including the first day—is crucial for student success because learning begins on the first day of school. This year, good attendance is even more important for high school students because of the Optional Flexible Year Plan, which the Texas Education Agency is allowing the district to offer as an incentive to students in grades 9-12. The additional days of the OFYP will be June 3-12 for high school students. High schoolers who meet high attendance, performance, and behavior requirements will earn the incentive to end their school

year on May 30 while others will be required to attend until June 12. The plan was adopted to encourage better attendance among high school students. If the high school incentive plan works, a similar incentive for middle school students may be offered in the future. For this school year, elementary and middle school students are required to attend class through June 11. The goal of the longer school year is to increase the number of days students are engaged in instruction, thus increasing learning. Regular school attendance is vital to the success of district improvement plan, Destination 2020. The new initiative spearheaded by Superintendent Miles aims to increase student graduation rates, raise scores on college entrance exams, improve workplace readiness and better prepare our graduates to enter college, the military or the workforce. Already Mr. Miles has c o n d u c t e d a m a j o r reorgan iza t ion o f schoo l leadership that is intended to bring district leaders into closer contact with schools. He has held extensive training sessions for principals spelling out his v i s i o n f o r i n c r e a s e d

accountability for principals and teachers. As part of his vision for Destination 2020, the new superintendent has established five Core Beliefs that he believes can transform our school district. You will hear much more about these beliefs in the coming weeks. A s a k e y e l e m e n t o f Destination 2020, we are asking all parents to do three things to help their children succeed in school: 1) make sure students get to school on time every day, 2 ) en s u r e t h ey d o t h e i r homework, and 3) read to them or listen to them read every night. In preparation for the start of the school year, we also want to remind parents to avoid the last minute rush to update children’s immunizations. Students in prekindergarten through 12th grade must have the required immunizations against vaccine-preventable diseases prior to the start of classes Monday, August 27. Parents of students with private health insurance should c o n t a c t t h e i r h e a l t h c a r e providers to arrange for these services. Be aware that Dallas ISD school cafeterias are meeting c h a l l e n g i n g n e w f e d e r a l

nutrition standards for school meals this year. The new standards are designed to ensure that meals are healthy, well-balanced and provide students all the nutrition they need to succeed in school. Although the price of school meals will increase to $1.25 for breakfast and $1.75 for lunch, school cafeterias still provide the most economical and nutritious meals around, making school lunch a great option for kids. Parents may apply online for free or reduced-price meals for their chi ld at ht tp: / /www.dallasisd.org/Page/929. I look forward to meeting the parents of District 5 students at parent conference nights, PTA meetings, community meetings and on my visits to the schools. Please keep in mind that it takes everyone getting involved in supporting education to make our students successful. My best wishes go out to you for a p r o d u c t i v e a n d e x c i t i n g 2012-2013 school year. I am available to meet with your group or organization to discuss Dallas ISD in general, and District 5 specifically. Contact me at 972-925-3718 or at [email protected].
