Challenges: Students spent much more time on the

Free Internet Information through public search engines than using a physical library.

Students spent much more time on non-University’s search engines/databases than the University search engines/databases.

August 17-19, 2006 15SHANGHAI INTERNATIONAL

LIBRARY FORUM

Challenges: they used electronic resources more than

print resources. Google has become the most often used

search engine among these respondents. In sum, the results are consistent with a

continuing trend toward greater Internet use and greater use of publicly available search engines.

August 17-19, 2006 16SHANGHAI INTERNATIONAL

LIBRARY FORUM

Root of the Challenges: Conflict between the print age and its

technology vs. electronic age and its technology.

It is a fundamental and infrastructural challenge to the traditional academic library.

August 17-19, 2006 17SHANGHAI INTERNATIONAL

LIBRARY FORUM

Will the Free Internet Information (FII) replace the library? Why not?

The library’s unique human resources, especially professionals, are the main reasons why FII cannot replace the current library system.

A lot of information is not available from the free Internet.

There is a major difference on quality control.

August 17-19, 2006 18SHANGHAI INTERNATIONAL

LIBRARY FORUM

Why not? More reasons: Information on free Internet is not

reliable. The print materials have some unique

features. Physical libraries provide alternative and

ideal environments for study and reading.

August 17-19, 2006 19SHANGHAI INTERNATIONAL

LIBRARY FORUM

The survey provided support : Individual study is ranked No. 1 for first

and third purposes in using the library, No. 2 for second purpose in using the library, cited by a total of 91.7/300 (30.6%) of respondents.

Using a group study room is ranked No. 3 for first and third purposes in using the library, No. 1 for second purpose in using the library, cited by a total of 56.3/300 (18.8%).

August 17-19, 2006 20SHANGHAI INTERNATIONAL

LIBRARY FORUM

Taking Advantage of the Internet: Internet can deliver information

worldwide in seconds, can provide remote and convenient access to the library information, and can provide 24/7 services for reference and electronic information. It could thereby strongly enhance the traditional library’s role and function in new directions, environments and shapes.

August 17-19, 2006 21SHANGHAI INTERNATIONAL

LIBRARY FORUM

The Future of Library: the hybrid library will be the main trend in

the library world. The complete digital library with the

Internet access only will coexist with hybrid library in the electronic age.
