Kegan Belina has always been one to leave a lasting im-pression. But these days it’s on account of his business

acumen, rather than his brawn.

Kegan, who stands 6-foot-5 and weighs 270 pounds, en-tered the sales force at age 17. He subsequently tried hishand at construction and retail, but nothing stuck until he gothired on as a security guard in Vancouver. Kegan quicklyclimbed the ranks until he was protecting the likes of TomCruise and Wayne Gretzky on tours of the city.

But after nine years in security, and a few injuries to showfor it, Kegan decided he wanted out. “This was not somethingI could grow old doing,” he says. “So I decided to go back andfinish my high school education.”

Kegan did not stop there. After completing his require-ments for Grade 12, he decided to pursue a diploma in busi-ness information technology management at the B.C.Institute of Technology. At age 27, school held a new appeal. He was enrolled by choice and motivated to make the grades.

“Age and experience are my biggest assets as an adultpost-secondary learner,” says Kegan. “I’m there because I

want to be there, and I show up ready to work every day be-cause that’s what I’m used to as a professional.”

Kegan has excelled at BCIT. “I’m a very competitive personand BCIT can be a pressure cooker. I thrive in that environ-ment,” he says. Now 29 years old, Kegan is seven monthsaway from graduating from BCIT’s Bachelor of Business Ad-ministration program. A high-level internship at SAP has givenhim a taste of business analytics. He plans to land a job inthe same field following graduation. “Long term, I will reachhigher for a faster-paced industry,” he says.

Kegan is confident his maturity will pay off when it comestime to find work. “A lot of what I have on my resume isn’treally applicable to what I want to do now,” he admits. “Thechange in career path is significant, but most of the skills aretransferable, and my focus gives me a competitive advantage.”

With a B.B.A. on the horizon, Kegan says going back toschool was the best decision he’s ever made. He encouragesothers who want to advance professionally to do the same –after carefully weighing the sacrifices. “It’s short term painfor long term gain,” he says. With the help of several scholar-ships, Kegan was able to step out of the labour force for fouryears and willing to set aside his social life. “It’s not possiblefor everyone, but if it’s viable, do it,” he says.

As of last week, employers in the U.S. state of Massa-chusetts can no longer ask job seekers what their sal-

ary history is during an interview. On the surface, questionsabout pay history might seem innocuous and benign, but em-ployers often use this tactic to gather info to be used in latersalary negations (or to screen out applicants who might seemtoo expensive). Massachusetts lawmakers correctly identifiedthat the question also makes it easier for employers to inad-vertently perpetuate pay inequity between men and women.

It has been well documented that when compared to men, women have historically received far less than equal pay forequal work. If employers base an initial salary offer on aworker’s past earnings, then the earnings gap may never beclosed. Furthermore, the new state law requires employersto disclose the compensation structure up front. It’s all veryenlightened, progressive and badly needed.

The gender pay gap is of course, not solely an Americanproblem; women in Canada earn about 72% of men’s wagesfor similar work. A 2015 study found that Canadian women

make $8,000 less per year than men who held similar employ-ment — double the global average. In Canada, awareness ofthis issue is high, but progress has been slight as one recentreport highlighted that the gender gap was widening.

For now, however, salary history is not an illegal interviewquestion in British Columbia. BC human rights legislation fo-cuses on discrimination when it comes to the hiring processso employers are not allowed to ask about age, gender, mari-tal status, etc. If you are asked about your salary history in ajob interview, the negotiation process may already be under-way. You will need to steer the discussion towards the futureand not your past by communicating to the employer whatyou are hoping to earn now.

Having a grasp of typical wages in your field and your fi-nancial needs and expectations will allow you to skillfullyhandle this situation. Deflecting questions about salary histo-ry will encourage the employer to determine the value thatyou will bring to their business going forward, irrespective ofthe past.

This is a complex issue and there are historical and societalbiases that have brought us to where we are today. Legisla-tion in Massachusetts is not going to magically fix the prob-lem, but it may lodge the idea in the minds of politicalleaders that they can swing a legislative hammer to helpbring about change. After decades of encouraging businessleaders to be proactive when it comes to women’s salarieswith little result, governments are called to take action.

Topics include the rewards and risks of entrepreneurship,Aboriginal cultural issues and opportunities, and, most impor-tantly, business survival and success skills. The third session istitled: “The Business Plan, What It Is, Why You Need It, Howto Effectively Package It.” Packaging your idea, as it turnsout, is no small task. “Often people have a grandiose businessidea and get stuck when it comes to executing it,” explainsJay. “We help them with the funnelling down process, gettingrid of superfluous stuff — down to meat and potatoes.”

In addition to the classroom material, there is also a fullEntrepreneurial Resource Library available for review ordownloading at helloiamanentrepreneur.com. It contains in-formation on everything from how to identify opportunitiesand “guerilla” marketing, to how to run a business.

Jay says one of the greatest obstacles faced by entrepre-neurs is the fear factor; fear of failure, but also of success.Questions surface like: “If this thing gets too big, will it tieup all of my time?” “What toll will it take on my family andfriends?” The best approach is to start out small and build areputation around one or two projects, according to Jay.“Hello I am an Entrepreneur” has helped to create dozens ofnew businesses in areas like videography, jewellery, crafting, retail, cosmetics, and massage therapy.

Participants can also receive one-on-one mentoring fo-cused on their businesses or ideas. As lead facilitator, Jayfinds the mentoring component to be one of the most re-warding aspects of the program. “I’m still mentoring on anon-and-off basis people who were in the program two yearsago,” he says. “The fact that they are still seeking advicereally demonstrates the program’s success.”

Enrollment in the program is limited strictly to Indigenousentrepreneurs or would-be entrepreneurs. Workshops will beheld at the Victoria Native Friendship Centre, 231 ReginaAve., starting Sept. 8. The series will deliver 12 workshops, 1per week, on Thursday evenings from 6-8 p.m. The centreexpects to offer the program annually.

Space is limited, so early registrations are recommended.Light refreshments will be served. Personal mentoring (viaSkype or email or phone) will also be delivered to any inter-ested participant who cannot attend in person.

Interested parties can contact Jay [email protected] or 1-250-619-3450, orsimply request a Registration Form at the Victoria NativeFriendship Centre. Learn more on Page 10.
