Reflections & Preparation for WorshipO God, by Your power may we, together with all the saints, comprehend the breadth and length andheight and depth of the love of Christ that surpasses knowledge, so that we may be filled with Your

fullness. Amen. ~ based on Ephesians 3:18-19

The Christian practice of hospitality wasin the New Testament

the concrete expression of Christian love.

~ Abraham J. Malherbe, Yale Classical & New Testament Scholar

Hospitality involves welcoming, creating space, listening, paying attention, and providing. Meals slow

things down. Some of us dont like that. We like to get things done. But meals force you to be peopleoriented instead of task oriented. Sharing a meal is not the only way to build relationships, but it is

    number one on the list.

    Tim Chester,A Meal with Jesus

I dont think most Christians today understand how essential hospitality is to fanning the flames of loveand strengthening the Christian family. Hospitality fleshes out love in a uniquely personal and sacrificial

way. Through the ministry of hospitality, we share our most prized possessions. We share our family,

home, finances, food, privacy, and time. Indeed, we share our very lives. So, hospitality is always costly.

Through the ministry of hospitality, we provide friendship, acceptance, fellowship, refreshment, comfort, and love in one of the richest and deepest ways possible for humans to understand. Unless we

open the doors of our homes to one another, the reality of the local church as a close-knit family ofloving brothers and sisters is only a theory.

~ Alexander Strauch, The Hospitality Commands

This is the generation most afraid of community because it inevitablylimits freedom and choice. Get over your fear.

Tim Keller, author & pastor of Redeemer Presbyterian Church NYC

Todays Scripture Lesson: Show Hospitality to One AnotherJohn Ferguson, Pastor

    ROMANS 12

1 I appeal to you therefore, brothers, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies as a livingsacrifice, holy and acceptable to God, which is your spiritual worship. 2 Do not be conformed to this

world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the willof God, what is good and acceptable and perfect.

10 Love one another with brotherly affection. Outdo one another in showing honor.

13 Contribute to the needs of the saints and seek to show hospitality.

    1 PETER 4

8 Above all, keep loving one another, earnestly, since love covers a multitude of sins.

9 Show hospitality to one another without grumbling.

God Feeds Us His Covenant MealFrom the east and the west, from the north and the south, people will come

and take their places at the banquet in the Kingdom of God. ~ based on Luke 13:29

A Word About Participating in The Sacrament of The Lords Supper

The Lords Supper is a special family meal that Christ gave to His Bride, the Church. ForChristians, this meal is a time to receive these signs and seals of the New Covenant which Christhas established with them. Believers come to this Table to meet with their Lord and Saviour byfaith, to be renewed by Him and strengthened in their callings and mission as they eat the breadand drink the wine.

Therefore, all baptized Christians who trust in Christ alone as their Lord and Saviour, who areconnected to a church that proclaims His Gospel, and who are at peace with their fellow believers, are invited to come to the Table.

If you are not yet a Christian, or if for whatever reason you are not prepared to share in this meal,

we would encourage you to spend this time in prayer (perhaps using one of the prayers listedbelow). Consider the invitation of Jesus, I am the bread of life; whoever comes to me shall nothunger, and whoever believes in me shall never thirstfor my Fathers will is that everyone wholooks to the Son and believes in Him shall have eternal life, and I will raise him up at the last day(John 6:35, 40).

We would ask that childrenwho have not yet professed beliefin the Lord Jesus also refrain frompartaking until doing so. The pastor would be delighted to speak to families about what it means toparticipate in the Lords Supper.

    The Words of Institution

The Lord Jesus, on the nighthe was betrayed took bread, and when he had given thanks, he broke

it, and said, This is my body which is for you. Do this in remembrance of me. In the same wayalso he took the cup, after supper, saying, This cup is the new covenant in my blood, do this as often

as you drink it, in remembrance of me. Foras often as you eat this bread and drink the cup, you

proclaim the Lords death until he comes. ~ 1 Corinthians 11:23-26

The Sacrament of The Lords Supper

Please come forward by rows to the center aisle and form a semi-circle in front of the Table toreceive the bread and the wine. When finished, place your cup at the side tables and proceed to

your seat via the outer isles. If you are unable to come forward, we would be delighted to serve youat your seat.

New City Church uses wine in serving the Lords Supper. We would encourage you to take ofthe wine since it is a symbol of joy and celebration in Scripture. However, juice is also provided ifyou cannot drink wine due to health reasons or issues of conscience.

    Prayers for Those Not Communing

A Prayer Searching for the Truth: Jesus, You claim to be the way, the truth, and the life, and thatno one comes to the Father except by You. If what you claim is true, please guide me and teachme. Open to me the reality of who You are. Grant that I might be undaunted in following You as Iconsider the reasons for doing so. Give me an understanding of You that is coherent, convincing, and leads to the eternal life that You promise. Amen.

A Prayer of Trust in the Lord Jesus: Jesus, I confess that I am more broken, flawed, and sinfulthan I had ever before dared to admit. Yet You tell me that I am more loved than I ever dared tohope, and that You accept all who turn to You in simple faith. I am doing that right now. I thankYou for taking the justice that my sins deserved when You died on the Cross. I eagerly trust Youfor the forgiveness for my sins, and I receive from You now the eternal life that You promise to allwho come to You. Amen.

A Prayer for Those Struggling with Sin: Lord Jesus, You know the battle that rages within myheart. Grant that in my battles with sin, I may see in You the fulfillment of all my needs. Give mestrength to turn from every false satisfaction to find my ultimate joy in You. Enable me to lay asidethe sin that clings so closely to me, and fill me with your Spirit to run with perseverance the race you

have set before me, looking to You, the pioneer and champion of my faith. Amen.

A Prayer for Children (who have yet to profess faith): Jesus, the Bible tells me that You blessedkids like me. Help me to know who You are and to understand what You have done for me. Amen.

    Hymn of Praise & Worship

    In Christ Alone

In Christ alone my hope is foundHe is my light, my strength, my songThis cornerstone, this solid ground

Firm through the fiercest drought and stormWhat heights of love, what depths of peaceWhen fears are stilled, when strivings cease

My comforter, my All in allHere in the love of Christ I stand

In Christ alone who took on flesh

Fullness of God in helpless babeThis gift of love and righteousnessScorned by the ones He came to save

Til on that cross as Jesus diedThe wrath of God was satisfiedFor every sin on Him was laid

Here in the death of Christ I live

There in the ground His body layLight of the world by darkness slainThen bursting forth in glorious dayUp from the grave He rose again

And as He stands in victorySins curse has lost its grip on meFor I am His and He is mine

Bought with the precious blood of Christ

No guilt in life, no fear in death

The language of debt/debtor is not to be understood primarily in a financial sense but in the moral/ theological sense of our

indebtedness due to our sins against God and others, or the sins others may have committed against us.

Our Confession of Faith ~ The Apostles Creed1

Leader: Christians, in whom do you believe?

Unison: We believe in God the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth.

And we believe in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lordwho was conceived by the Holy Spiritborn of the virgin Mary.He suffered under Pontius Pilate,

was crucified, dead, and buried; He descended into hell.2the third day he rose again from the dead.He ascended to heaven and is seatedat the right hand of God the Father Almighty. From there He will come to judge the living and the dead.

And we believe in the Holy SpiritThe holy catholic church,3 the communion of saints,The forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body,And the life everlasting. Amen.

God Sends Us Out Into The World With His Blessing God has shown you what is good. And what does the Lord require of you?

To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God. ~ from Micah 6:8

Leader: The Lord bless you and keep you; the Lord make his face to shine upon you and begracious to you; the Lord lift up his countenance upon you and give you peace(Numbers 6:24-26).

    People: Amen!

1The Apostles Creed is an ancient creed (that is, statement of faith) of the Church and historically has been widely used and cherished bybelievers. Although it was not written by the Apostles, we believe it to be a concise summary of their teachings. It may have originated as

a baptismal formula around the 2nd century, and developed into its present form by the 6 th or 7th century.2Jesus descent into hell consisted in His priestly act of offering Himself up as a sacrifice for sins, undergoing the judicial wrath of God onthe Cross, and remaining under the power of death for three days before being vindicated in His resurrection.3 The term catholic means universaland hence does not refer to any one particular church, but to Christs universal Church, wherever

she may be found gathering in Christs name.

    Current Sermon Series: Life Together

Life in Calgary can be busy. Toobusy. And if we are honest, it canbe a little depersonalizing. Sur-rounded by nearly 1.2 millionpeople, many Calgarians are alltoo familiar with what sociologistscall, crowded loneliness. Are wereally meant to be surrounded byso many people and still besounconnected?Sounknown? The short answeris no. This is simply just anotherway life is broken. And it is

    supposed to be so different.

We are told that the early followers of Jesus devoted themselves to fellowship (Acts 2:42), that is, theydevoted themselves to a new way of being human that they learned from Jesus a new way of doing lifetogether. During the months of July & August, well be looking into the New Testament teaching about oneanother-ing, and well see that maybe, just maybe, we have been missing out on something vital to ourhumanity, to our Christianity, and to the mission that weve been sent on to this city.
