Why Corner

The Storm of Life Jesus, am I with you in the storms of life? First, the disciples proceeded on the boat to the other side, accord-ing to Jesus' instructions, and without Him. Why would they leave Jesus behind? For the disciples, they have spent all their lives on the lake and for them it was like walking on land. For them, they were overconfident and cocky. Like the disciples, when everything is good, calm, settled and content, there is a ten-dency in all of us to leave God and Jesus behind. Should we be more thoughtful of Jesus without the storms of life? Second, at Peter's request and Jesus' invitation, Peter walked on the water. Peter was doing so well, but he let fear and the storm take control of his life and made the ultimate mistake by taking his eyes from Jesus. Is not life harder and more challenging when we keep our eyes from Jesus and let us dictate our life? Third, even in our doubt, Jesus still comes to our assistance and rescues us like He reached out for Peter. How often do we doubt God and Jesus in our prayers and requests? Fr. Young

PRESENCE It is difficult to be truly present to another. We speak of putting in an appearance or showing up. Even when we arrive, we are often distracted. We think ahead, or we review an unsettled past. Nonetheless, we are at our best when we truly show up. We are most fully ourselves when we are absorbed in something worthy of us: creative work, good conversation, prayer. In these in-stances we are wholly ourselves and wholly outside ourselves. Elijah knew this kind of engagement. He was one of God’s great prophets. In today’s first reading, he follows God’s com-mand to journey to that most holy place, Mount Horeb. And there in great silence, Elijah encounters God. As for Peter and the apostles, they discover the presence of God after the storm at sea. They and the sea and the winds are stunned into silent reverence.
